The road to Sant'Angelo in Colle leads to the south-west side of the Montalcino hill. Here lies the Tenuta Il Poggione – one of the oldest and most reliable houses in the appellation. Lavinio Franceschi, a Florentine landowner, bought the estate at the end of the 19th century after, it is said, hearing about the beauty of these hills from a shepherd. He was one of the first to market Brunello under this name and one of the founders of the consortium. Today, the fourth generation – leopoldo and Livia Franceschi – run the estate with 140 hectares of vines, the oldest vines up to 60 years old and a philosophy that has not fundamentally changed in a century.
Brunello di Montalcino is made exclusively from hand-picked Sangiovese grapes from the oldest parcels. 15 to 20 days of maceration with the skins submerged in steel, natural yeasts, malolactic fermentation also in steel. Then 36 months in large French oak barrels of 30 to 50 hectolitres, followed by bottling. A Brunello with a classic character – not a modern concentration wine, but one that understands and needs time. 2020 was a hot, dry year for Montalcino. Sant'Angelo in Colle has an advantage in such vintages: the south-west exposure, the sea breeze from the distant Tyrrhenian Sea and the well-drained soils keep the heat in balance. Il Poggione has mastered this vintage with great aplomb.
Deep, bright ruby red in colour. The nose opens with energy and warmth: sour cherry, cranberry, dusty sage, blood orange, Tuscan undergrowth, plus a hint of liquorice root and exotic spice. Velvety and full-bodied on the palate – the soft, almost silky texture is the hallmark of the house – carried by a lively acidity, fine tannins and a long, salty-mineral finish. A generous Brunello with great accessibility and even greater Storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Densely coloured with ripe red and dark fruits, less blueberry than usual, significantly more sour cherry and red currant, wild strawberries and cassis. Behind this, cedar, tobacco, chocolate and dark spices as well as herbal flavours. Dense palate with a firm tannin structure. Very persistent and substantial on the final." Weinwisser
"A restrained blend of liquorice and graphite, bright red cherries and roasted notes. Firm tannins on the medium to full-bodied palate with refreshing acidity. Overall a plump style." James Suckling
"This red wine is rich and dense, interwoven with flavours of cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth, iron and tobacco. Combines power and grace with fine balance. The finish echoes the fruit and spice flavours." Wine Spectator
"The Il Poggione 2020 Brunello di Montalcino shows very nice results, with a better accessibility in this vintage. It has aromas of dark fruits with blackcurrant, followed by something spicy or herbal. I am reminded of liquorice root, exotic spices, pressed roses and fragrant tea leaves. The finish is supple with silky tannins and an open approach. This vintage is almost ready to drink, and you get an elegant complexity at the same time." Wine Advocate
"A sun-soaked nose of macerated cherries and nutmeg is balanced by porcini mushrooms and leather. This wine has all the generosity and lushness of the south, with dusty tannins giving it shape. The dense red fruits are punctuated by sweet, dried herbs, and the finish offers a salty tang. There's a lot of wine here, but it's impeccably balanced." Decanter
"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is initially explosive, bright and powerful, evolving from cranberry to cherry with dusty sage, spiced blood orange and Tuscan dust. The wine is pure elegance, with a deep, almost velvety texture and a core of tart forest fruits that contrast with the balsamic notes and fine-grained tannins on the finish. The finish is long, textured and colourful, leaving a sense of flint and a primary fruit core that floods the palate with purple flowers and a hint of lavender. The 2020 is seamless from start to finish and, while more approachable than a typical vintage of Il Poggione, is balanced for longer aging." Vinous
"On the nose, aromas of red raspberries, red oranges and gardenia, with mentholated nuances. The flavour has salty tannins, then notes of red and floral fruits." Luca Gardini
"The nose is both perfumed and spicy, with aromas of cloves, coffee, vanilla bean and black cherry. Flavors of tart blackberry, bergamot and flaky salt define the palate, before a touch of mocha creeps onto the finish. Tannins are polished, but grippy." Wine Enthusiast
