Tenuta Il Poggione is located on the south-west side of the Montalcino hill, in Sant'Angelo in Colle – one of the most historically significant areas of the appellation. Lavinio Franceschi laid the foundations here at the end of the 19th century as a founding member of the Brunello consortium and one of the first to market this wine under its current name. Today, his descendants Leopoldo and Livia cultivate 140 hectares of vines, with vines up to 60 years old and a cellar philosophy of classic rigour: natural yeasts, large French oak barrels, time.
100% Sangiovese from the estate's oldest parcels. 15 to 20 days of maceration in steel, BSA in steel, then 36 months in 30 to 50 hectolitre French oak barrels. A wine that is never optimised for accessibility – but for decades. Alongside 2019, the 2021 vintage is one of the most important Montalcinos in years. An April frost reduced the yields by around 15 per cent. What remained was concentrated and precise. A warm summer with two saving rains at the end of August, an ideal September with cool nights – phenolic ripeness, lively acidity, structural tension. The grapes needed their time and they got it.
Dark, dense ruby red in the glass. The nose opens slowly and with dignity: black plum, blackberry, nutmeg, cinnamon, dry herbs, a veil of dark cherry that only fully unfolds after long decanting. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, with a tannin of phenolic precision – fine-grained, tense, not yet ready. The Sangiovese acidity is exceptionally lively. The finish is long, mineral, deep. Great potential! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby colour with a sparkling garnet rim. Intense, inviting nose, opens with notes of cherries and pickled peaches, some cranberry, fresh and finely characterised. Juicy on the palate, with crisp fruit and grippy, gripping tannins." Falstaff
"Aromas of berries dominate the nose, with a subliminal hint of spices and rose petals; compact texture, tightly woven tannins, persistent final." Vinum
"Smoky, sweet spices combine with tarry plums, black cherries and a hint of blackberries. Fine, dusty tannins run throughout the palate, with compact dark fruit and a long, flattering finish. Quite lush and plush, yet well balanced." James Suckling
"Appealing scents of leather, nutmeg and star anise permeate strawberry compote. It carries its weight with aplomb, unfolding with lush, ripe plums enveloped in soft, confident tannins. It is quite full-bodied, but never tiring thanks to a steady, contrasting acidity. Further nuances of cigar and black tea are teased out. It is so comforting in its recognisable and generous style that it should be enjoyed in front of the fire on a cool evening." Decanter
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is full-bodied and rich, with a velvety texture that is characteristic of this estate. The added richness and volume of the wine provide a strong sounding board for ripe dark plum and blackcurrant flavours. The tannins have a phenolic bite that I detected in this vintage, suggesting that a few more years of bottle age is desirable. Il Poggione comes from vineyards on the warmer south side of Montalcino and has long been known for producing a generous, powerful and structured Brunello." Wine Advocate
"Dark depths of grated sage, brown spice, chestnut and spiced blood orange give way to nuances of dried black cherry as the youthfully brooding 2021 Brunello di Montalcino slowly evolves in the glass. It feels good, soft and round, with beautiful red berry fruit and cooling acidity, while a lively, gravelly minerality permeates the senses. An invigorating citrus flavour balances the fine-grained tannins and a hint of spice runs through the long and surprisingly fresh finish. Bury this unbridled beast in the cellar." Vinous
"This wine is rich and even creamy, showing flavours of blackberries, blackcurrants and plums. Supported by stiff, dusty tannins and moderate acidity. There is a balance on the finish, in which fruity and spicy elements mingle. Fine length." Wine Spectator
