“Nipozzano” Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2023
Nipozzano Riserva is the most famous wine from the Frescobaldi estate of the same name in Chianti Rufina, high above the Arno Valley to the north-east of Florence. Sangiovese, blended with selected partner grape varieties, is destemmed and fermented spontaneously in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks; malolactic fermentation also takes place in steel. At the end of the year, the wine is transferred to barriques for several months, after which it continues to mature in the bottle.

“Nipozzano Vecchie Viti” Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2023
It is not just any wine that is set aside for the Frescobaldi family's newborns: Nipozzano Vecchie Viti is part of a small, family-exclusive selection traditionally set aside for the youngest members of the family, made from the estate's oldest vines, whose roots dig deep into the soil of Nipozzano. These old vineyards, planted with Sangiovese and traditional companion varieties, are situated high above the Arno Valley in Chianti Rufina, where the altitude and the contrast between day and night lend the grapes exceptional concentration and freshness. Fermented naturally in concrete tanks, the wine is then aged for 24 months in wooden barrels before being bottled, allowing its flavours to come together.

!["Vigna Montesodi" Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2022]()
“Vigna Montesodi” Chianti Rufina Riserva DOCG 2022
In 1974, the Frescobaldi family at Nipozzano produced a wine for the first time from a single, clearly defined plot: Montesodi, named after the stony, hard soil that gives this site its character – a single-varietal Sangiovese, bottled separately vintage by vintage. It was the estate's first cru. The vines are situated at 400 metres, in south-west-facing schist soils, at an altitude that lends the Sangiovese here structure and an almost alpine coolness during the nights. Harvested by hand into 15-kilo crates and sorted on the selection table, the wine undergoes fermentation and maceration before malolactic fermentation takes place. It is aged for 18 months in 30-hectolitre barrels made of Austrian and French oak, followed by a further period of ageing in the bottle.

!["Mormoreto" Rosso Toscana IGT 2022]()
“Mormoreto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2022
In 1855, a far-sighted Frescobaldi ancestor planted on the hill of Nipozzano varieties that were virtually unknown in Tuscany at the time: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This experiment matured for almost 130 years until, in 1983, the Mormoreto emerged as a distinct cru, which the family has since bottled only in vintages that do it justice. To date, they have skipped six vintages. The backbone is formed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, rounded off by a hint of Petit Verdot, and since 2013 a small proportion of Sangiovese has brought additional elegance to the cuvée.

Castello Nipozzano lies northeast of Florence at the foot of the Apennines and is one of the most historic estates of Frescobaldi. The ancient fortress dates back to around the year 1000; the cellars hold Nipozzano wines whose history is documented as far back as 1864. Yet the estate's real strength lies not in age alone, but in how clearly landscape, climate and grape varieties are reflected in its wines.
Even the name tells part of the story. According to tradition, Nipozzano means "without a well" – a reference to the scarcity of water in the area and thus to conditions in which vines must root deeply and cope with limited resources. Even more important, however, is the location between hills and mountains: the Apennines protect the vineyards from cold currents from the north, while fresh winds from the higher elevations create pronounced differences between day and night temperatures.
Chianti Rufina – Sangiovese with the Apennines at its back
Sangiovese is the central grape variety at Castello Nipozzano. In Chianti Rufina in particular, it can reveal a highly distinctive character: freshness, elegance and structure are just as important as ripe fruit and the ability to develop over many years.
The climatic tension of the site plays an important role. Warm, bright days encourage ripening, while cooler nights preserve aromatic freshness. Nipozzano Riserva expresses this classical side of the estate particularly directly. Vecchie Viti focuses more closely on older vines and a more traditional interpretation of the same origin.
Both wines therefore lead back to the heart of Nipozzano: Sangiovese and the question of how differently a single landscape can be interpreted.
Montesodi – when Nipozzano becomes pure Sangiovese
This idea becomes even more precise with Montesodi. Within the estate, the wine represents the most concentrated connection between Sangiovese and origin and, as Chianti Rufina Riserva Terraelectae, now ranks among the appellation's most clearly defined top wines.
Montesodi is therefore more than simply the next step up in the range. It demonstrates how closely Nipozzano can focus on a single expression of Sangiovese. While classic Chianti Rufina paints a broader picture of the estate, here the origin is condensed into a considerably narrower perspective.
That is precisely where its appeal lies: elegance, freshness and structure are created not through maximum power, but through concentration on grape variety and place.
Mormoreto – Nipozzano's other idea
Mormoreto demonstrates that Castello Nipozzano has never been conceived in only one direction. Alongside Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot have also been cultivated on the estate for many years. These varieties offer a second perspective on the same landscape and have become just as natural a part of the Castello's identity.
Mormoreto therefore does not stand in opposition to the tradition of Chianti Rufina. Rather, the wine shows that Nipozzano can develop two different ideas side by side: on the one hand, an increasingly precise interpretation of Sangiovese; on the other, an independent Tuscan interpretation of international grape varieties.
It is precisely this contrast that makes the estate so fascinating. Nipozzano Riserva and Vecchie Viti tell the classical story of the origin, Montesodi concentrates it on Sangiovese, while Mormoreto deliberately opens the perspective further. The result is not a simple quality pyramid, but a small world of wines offering different viewpoints.
Between hills and mountains
Frescobaldi sums up the character of Nipozzano in four words: longevity, elegance, freshness and complexity. In fact, these qualities can be readily explained by the place itself. Its position by the Apennines, the pronounced temperature differences and the diversity of cultivated grape varieties create enough tension for each wine to follow its own direction.
Castello Nipozzano therefore does not need to be reduced to a single stylistic formula. Its strength lies precisely in placing Sangiovese and international grape varieties, tradition and openness, Chianti Rufina and Toscana IGT naturally alongside one another – all connected by the same place.
