In 1855, a far-sighted Frescobaldi ancestor planted on the hill of Nipozzano varieties that were virtually unknown in Tuscany at the time: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This experiment matured for almost 130 years until, in 1983, the Mormoreto emerged as a distinct cru, which the family has since bottled only in vintages that do it justice. To date, they have skipped six vintages. The backbone is formed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, rounded off by a hint of Petit Verdot, and since 2013 a small proportion of Sangiovese has brought additional elegance to the cuvée.
The Mormoreto vineyard, planted in 1976, rises from 250 to 300 metres on south-west-facing sandy soils, less than half an hour from Florence. The grapes are harvested by hand into 15-kilo crates and sorted twice – once in the vineyard and once in the cellar. After the first racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged for two years in French barriques.
An intense, brilliant ruby red with violet highlights. The bouquet unfolds in layers of fruit, floral notes and spice, with clearly defined blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by liquorice and a hint of white pepper. Soft and full-bodied on the palate, with velvety tannins and an exceptionally long finish. A bold venture from 1855 that continues to pay off to this day. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Mormoreto is an intoxicating, explosive wine. Notes of blackberry, espresso, dark chocolate and cloves really come into their own here. Although it isn't exactly subtle, the 2022 is flawlessly crafted. Brace yourself for a wine that really packs a punch." Vinous
"Appealing aromas of blackcurrants, tar, damp earth, white pepper, heather and orange peel. Medium-bodied and spicy, with creamy, well-integrated tannins and a subtle juiciness. Drink now or lay down." James Suckling
