“Merì" Vermentino di Sardegna DOC 2019
The pure Vermentino Meri presents itself stylish and crisp. In the fragrance wonderful notes of lemon, honey, orange and apple. Fresh and lively, but at the same time full and intense. The grapes are cooled in the vineyard immediately after harvest and are protected from oxidation - this way they retain their best possible aroma and the wine acquires a richer, more complex bouquet. SUPERIORE.DE
"Fresh nectarines, white peach, flower meadow, reminiscent of sugar melon in the reverberation. Crunchy, juicy, elegant fruit melts, lingers clearly on the tongue, salty aftertaste." Falstaff
"A medium-bodied white with sliced apple, pear skin and grapefruit zest. Fresh herbs, too. Bright acidity and a fresh finish." James Suckling

Wines from the Vermentino grape repeatedly achieve extremely high ratings at international blind tastings. And although the area under cultivation is steadily increasing worldwide, it is still relatively unknown. In 2010 there were a total of only 8,600 hectares, of which 5,000 hectares were in Italy.
Vermentino is the grape known in Tuscany, especially in the Maremma and Bolgheri, in Sardinia and in the south of Italy. In Liguria it trades as Pigato, in Piedmont as Favorita. Vermentino is registered in some white DOC wines. The only DOCG wine produced in Sardinia is Vermentino di Gallura.
Altogether more than thirty synonyms are known. In France, with about 3,000 hectares the second largest cultivation area, they are called Rolle, on Corsica Malvoisie de Corse or Vermentinu. Small areas are cultivated in Madeira, Portugal, Malta, Lebanon, the USA, Australia and Brazil.
The white grape variety comes from the Mediterranean region, probably from Italy. The fact that Favorita, Pigato and Vermentino are identical was established in DNA analyses in the 1990s. The exact origin is unclear, it has been mentioned in Italy since the 16th century. The presumption that the grape came from Madeira via Portugal, France and Corsica to Italy could not be proven any more than a descent from Greece.
The rather late ripening, high-yielding variety thrives particularly well near the sea and loves clayey or calcareous soils. The name Pigato derives from the dialect expression "piga" or "pigau" for spotted berry shells. Vermentino is sensitive to early frost, susceptible to downy mildew and the grape moth.
The wines are quite differently developed in the different cultivation areas. They are usually quite intense golden-coloured, aromatic after stone fruit and herb spicy. Sometimes in the finish with a touch of dark almonds. Vermentino is a good accompaniment, especially with seafood, mussels, scampi and of course spaghetti Vongole. SUPERIORE.DE
