“Critone” Bianco Calabria IGT 2024
Critone is one of the best-known white wine cuvées in southern Italy and combines the elegance of Chardonnay with the aromatic freshness of Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes come from well-ventilated vineyards around Cirò Marina, on calcareous flysch soils with a clay subsoil – ideal conditions for clarity and structure. The colour in the glass is pale straw yellow with a greenish tinge. The nose reveals green apple skin, citrus, some peach and fine vegetal notes. The palate is dry, clear and lively, with crisp acidity and a fine mineral vein. Maturation in stainless steel tanks emphasises the fresh, fruity character.

Classic rosato with character: Terre Lontane is made from Gaglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon – an unusual but extremely successful combination that creates depth and tension. The vines grow on chalky and clayey soils near the Ionian coast, whose proximity to the sea favours ripeness while retaining freshness. Brilliant raspberry pink with salmon-coloured shimmer. The bouquet is inviting and fragrant, with notes of redcurrants, pink grapefruit, wild roses and a hint of Mediterranean herbs. Lively, dry and precise on the palate, with a delicate tannic grip, good juiciness and a fine fruity finish.

!["Megonio" Rosso Calabria IGT 2022]()
“Megonio” Rosso Calabria IGT 2022
With "Megonio", the Librandi family presents one of the oldest grape varieties in southern Italy in its purest form: Magliocco – deeply rooted in the Calabrian wine tradition, today a rare speciality. The grapes come from the single vineyard of the same name near Rocca di Neto, named after a Roman centurion. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures for around twelve months in barriques, revealing the elegant side of a variety that is otherwise often considered rustic.

!["Megonio" Rosso Calabria IGT 2023]()
“Megonio” Rosso Calabria IGT 2023
Calabria showed its sunniest side in the warm, dry year of 2023. The single-varietal Magliocco from the "Megonio" vineyard benefited from this constellation with deeply ripe grapes, concentrated fruit and healthy berry skins. The vinification process was classic: temperature-controlled mash fermentation, followed by ageing in barriques for around a year – enough to create structure without masking the authenticity of the variety.

!["Efeso" Bianco Calabria IGT 2023]()
“Efeso” Bianco Calabria IGT 2023
Efeso is probably Librandi's most elegant white wine – a single-varietal Mantonico, an old Calabrian grape variety with a long history and great potential. The grapes come from high-altitude, well-ventilated vineyards around Strongoli, where the warmth of the south meets night-time freshness and ripening is slow and controlled. The 2023 vintage was warm but balanced, with healthy grapes and precise flavours. The ageing takes place in barriques with regular bâtonnage – a deliberately Burgundian approach for an indigenous wine.

!["Gravello" Rosso Calabria IGT 2022]()
“Gravello” Rosso Calabria IGT 2022
Gravello is the great red classic of the Librandi house – and has been a pioneering wine for the region since the 1980s. The cuvée of Gaglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon is a symbol of modern Calabria: powerful, structured and of international calibre, without denying its origins. The 2022 vintage was characterised by a warm, dry summer with cool nights, resulting in ripe, healthy grapes with dense fruit and good freshness. The wine is aged for twelve months in French barriques, giving it depth and elegance.

For a long time, talking about Calabria's viticulture meant talking mainly about a single winery: Librandi. But in the meantime, there are more and more thoroughly working wineries that produce high-quality wines typical of the region, relying above all on ancient indigenous grape varieties. That this is the case is thanks to Nicodemo Librandi (who sadly passed away in 2023). He revived the most important of these grape varieties - such as Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Mantonica - and, as a pioneer, showed other winegrowers the high quality of these grapes. The beautiful Librandi winery, located in Ciró Marina near the Punta Alice resort on the Ionian coast, has been in the family for four generations and is now run by Teresa and Francesco and the two cousins Paolo and Raffaele, following the early death of the founder Tonino Librandi. The combination of mild Mediterranean temperatures and a strong breeze from the mountains creates a microclimate that gives the wines of the winemaking quartet unique notes, flavours and aromas.
In the wine house, which has been developed into a large modern agricultural enterprise with a great deal of money and time, great value is placed on a harmonious balance between tradition and innovation. Numerous awards attest to the success achieved with this philosophy by the pearl of Calabrian viticulture, which has become a fixed reference point for the winegrowers of southern Italy. In the municipalities of Cirò and the neighbouring villages of Strongoli, Casabona and Rocca di Neto, as well as in Cirò Marina, but also in the vineyards of Crucoli and Melissa in the province of Messina, many almost extinct autochthonous varieties thrive under the careful care of agronomist Davide De Santis. The grapes are vinified in the cellar under the expert supervision of Donato Lanati, professor of oenology in Turin and Florence, to produce reliably original and elegant creations. The main wines of the wide range continue to be made from the local Gaglioppo grape.
Librandi runs several experimental vineyards in which ancient Calabrian grape varieties are cultivated. In order to be able to produce noble drops with the authentic character of their terroir, the best clones have been carefully selected by the Librandi family. In addition, the wine enthusiasts carried out microvinifications with great patience and evaluated them meticulously. In contrast, they completely disregarded fashion trends and methods that led to quick successes in their research work. SUPERIORE.DE
