Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2017 (BIO)

Bright intense ruby, in the nose a lot of fresh, clear berry fruit, very elegant, on the palate accentuated acidity at the beginning, which then gives way to fine tannin, long and juicy in the aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shows style and punch. Concentrated fruit flavors of blackberry and black currant are well-defined due to the succulent acidity, while light tannins on the finish tie all the elements together." Wine Spectator

    • Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO)

Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2016 (BIO)

Bright intense ruby, in the nose very much fresh, clear berry fruit, very elegant, on the palate emphasized acidity in the approach, which then gives way to a fine tannin, long and juicy in the aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"A deep purple glow. In the nose light cherry, opens only tentatively. Fresh on the palate with a tight traction, lively, medium-bodied, drinks quickly." Falstaff

"Many vintners have affirmed that 2016 is not an ideal vintage for Barbera. Evidently, Chiara Boschis never got the memo. She has crafted a lovely expression that boasts varietal richness and softness. The 2016 Barbera d'Alba Superiore starts off with subtle and careful intensity. But as it takes on greater momentum in the glass, you begin to recognize dark fruit, etched mineral and black olive. The finish is polished and crisp. This Barbera reveals significant depth and lasting persistence." Robert Parker

"Vibrant and saturated with violet, black currant and blackberry aromas and flavors. Maintains a high level of intensity throughout, with well-integrated acidity and tannins. Still a bit gruff on the finish." Wine Spectator

Barolo “Via Nuova” DOCG 2014 (BIO)

In the bouquet violets, spices, menthol, mint and seductive berry aromas. Straight and compact on the palate, with fine minerality and great elegance. A very impressive Barolo, which perfectly manages the balancing act between tradition and modernity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very nice black fruits and some licorice on the nose, making this immediately appealing. There's an impressive tannin structure on the palate for this often wishy-washy vintage. With more elegance this would have been rated higher, but it certainly gives plenty of pleasure now. It will continue to do so through at least 2030." James Suckling

"Round and solidly built, offering plum, cherry, earth and graphite flavors. The lively acidity and well-groomed tannins lend finesse. Finishes with a mix of fruit, earth and mineral elements." Wine Spectator

"This is the mid-weight wine that exists on a continuum between the ethereal elegance of Cannubi and the muscular power of Mosconi. The 2014 Barolo Via Nuova represents a traditional assembly of fruit from various sites, including Barolo (Terlo and Liste), Monforte d'Alba (Ravera and Mosconi) and Serralunga d'Alba (Gabutti and Baudana). This beautiful wine offers volume and grit with beautiful mineral tones that stand proud above the dark fruit, cassis and wild rose. There is a note of mineral saltiness on the close that I really love." Robert Parker

      Barolo “Via Nuova” DOCG 2012

Barolo Via Nuova is fresh and lively. In the bouquet violets, spices, menthol, mint and seductive berry aromas. Straight and compact on the palate, with fine minerality and great elegance. A very impressive Barolo, which perfectly manages the balancing act between tradition and modernity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Elegance and harmony are two leading traits that can be attributed to the 2012 Barolo Via Nuova. This wine represents a balanced blend of Nebbiolo grapes from various sites. That blending flexibility adds to the overall balance of the wine, which is very important in a vintage like 2012 that was not always easy across the various townships of the Barolo appellation. Bright cherry and blackberry are followed by spice and grilled herb." Robert Parker

"A wine of extraordinary precision, the 2012 Barolo Via Nuova possesses stunning vibrancy and energy. Dark cherry, cherry pit, blood orange, orange peel, exotic spice and mint are all laced together in a chiseled Barolo that bristles with energy. Addictively beautiful and inviting, the Via Nuova is endowed with a super-classic, mid-weight feel, knock-out aromatics and fabulous overall balance." Antonio Galloni

"This shows such clarity and freshness with so much minerality. Blue fruits too. Medium to full body, linear tannins and acidity. Dark chocolate undertones." James Suckling

Barolo “Via Nuova” DOCG 2015 (BIO)

In the bouquet violets, spices, menthol, mint and seductive berry aromas. Straight and compact on the palate, with fine minerality and great elegance. A very impressive Barolo, which perfectly manages the balancing act between tradition and modernity. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of fruit from Barolo, Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba, and each site adds elegance, power and structure, respectively. The wine's taste profile in 2015 emerges as very minty and balsamic on first nose. Delicate notes of forest berry and wild cherry are followed by cooling medicinal herb. This warm vintage also adds a touch of cured meat or leather at the very back that hints at the heat of the vintage. Overall, this is the most accessible and near-term of Chiara Boschis's three Barolos reviewed this year." Robert Parker

"Once again, the 2015 Barolo Via Nuova shows why the blending of several sites was the approach favored by Barolo producers until the 1960s, when the fascination for single-vineyard wines started to take off. Maybe the old-times knew something after all. Silky and fragrant, with exceptional balance, the 2015 is positively striking. Medium in body and layered, the 2015 has a very bright future. What a gorgeous wine it is." Antonio Galloni

"This delivers a fresh and vibrant impression on the nose with ripe red cherries and a deep-set, rose perfume. The palate has impressive power and focus with chiseled, driving tannins that cut a straight line of pure, red and black-cherry flavor. Long and assertive in 2015." James Suckling

    • Barolo "Mosconi" DOCG 2014 (BIO)

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2014 (BIO)

Barolo Mosconi is beautifully aromatic. Elegant bouquet of mineral-rich limestone soils, powerful, rich and juicy on the palate, the tannins well interwoven, structure and length exemplary. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a slightly brightening edge. Compact and dense nose, full-bodied of blackberries and dark cherries, with some liquorice and truffle. Firm and gripping on the palate, shows a lot of grippy, dense tannin, dark berry fruit, in the finish salty and long, leathery." Falstaff

"The 2014 Barolo Mosconi is the most robust and structured of the three Barolos. Chiara Bochis believes in making her single-vineyard wines even in a difficult vintage such as this. She rejects the idea of blending all her fruit together to make a single wine. Indeed, her cru wines are very distinct. Each shows its individual characteristics with greater precision, I would argue, in this slender and more ethereal vintage. The 2014 vintage is a natural spring board for highlighting vineyard personalities. This is a cool vintage, but Mosconi surprises the senses for the plump ripeness of its dark fruit favors." Robert Parker

"Plenty of dried berries and herbs. Some meat, woody spices and a wealth of fresh red and pink roses, making this very fragrant. The palate has assertive acid cut and impressive depth. The elegant yet firm tannins hold the red-plum finish long. A great result with real tension." James Suckling

"A mix of cherry, eucalyptus, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors are gripped by dense, dusty tannins. On the darker side, with a kernel of sweet fruit on the finish. Fine intensity." Wine Spectator

"Chiara Boschis’ take on Monforte’s Wagnerian terroir translates it into a minerally, fruit-driven symphony with refined tannins and graceful flavour. This is a brilliant compromise between acidity and sweetness." Decanter

    • Barolo "Mosconi" DOCG 2011

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2011

The scent of Barolo Mosconi blends fruits with balsamic and minty notes. The rich, juicy taste stands on a solid tannin foundation, the enormously long finish shows a certain spiciness. An elegant and harmonious drop, destined for a long life. SUPERIORE.DE

"Ruby with a slight shimmer of garnet, but also a slight sediment. Nose is definitely wow! Opened with notes of anchovies, pickled peaches, then plenty of cherry and raspberry. On the palate fine-meshed tannin with sweet core, gripping and hearty, but also builds up in many layers, spans a wide arch, in the finale very long reverberation." Falstaff

"The 2011 Barolo Mosconi shows thick lines and dark density with well-defined notes of dried cherry, balsam herb, licorice and dark chocolate. Its consistency is plush and soft, although that characteristic tannic backbone does much to keep the wine tightly stitched together. Barolo Mosconi delivers warm vintage traits on the nose and the textural firmness of a cooler year. The results are unique and compelling. This Barolo ages in oak for two years." Robert Parker

"A gorgeous red with pure fruit, flowers and almonds. Full body, firm tannins and a silky and delicious finish. Very fine. Great wine." James Suckling

"Licorice and cherry notes combine for an appealing effect in this supple red. The dense tannins are in proportion. Finishes fresh, with traces of mineral and tobacco balanced by lingering fruit." Wine Spectator

"A dark, brooding wine, the 2011 Barolo Mosconi captures the sense of this Monforte site in its intense flavors and broad, ample frame. Black cherries, savory herbs, mint, tobacco, smoke and incense all flesh out in the glass as this opulent, virile Barolo shows off its personality. While the Cannubi is purely silk and sensuality, the Mosconi is all muscle. It will therefore hold more appeal to readers who like massive, powerful Barolos." Antonio Galloni

Barolo Mosconi, the first wine of the winery from this southern location in Monforte, is beautifully aromatic. Elegant bouquet of mineral-rich limestone floors, powerful, rich and juicy on the palate, the tannins well interwoven, structure and length exemplary. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Mosconi is one of the big surprises of this tasting. This is a gorgeous expression with a deep and enduring sense of balance. The wine offers excellent intensity with black fruit and spice, nicely contrasted against more subtle tones of licorice, red rose and polished river stone. The tannins are firm and tight." Barolo Mosconi is wonderfully aromatic. Elegant bouquet of mineral-rich limestone soils, powerful, rich and juicy on the palate, the tannins well interwoven, structure and length exemplary. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barolo Mosconi is striking in this vintage. The natural richness of the year seems especially well suited to this Monforte site, where the wines tend to be born with a natural sense of textural breadth and volume. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, new leather and menthol grow in the glass in a full-bodied, virile Barolo that speaks to power above all else." VINOUS

"Eucalyptus, wild rosemary, licorice, leather, plum, black cherry and iron aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of this muscular red. Light spice accents add depth as this cruises to a long finish." Wine Spectator

"All of the wines from Chiara Boschis are more vinous this year, more natural. They feel authentic, genuine and traditional. They show an extra degree of richness or texture, and the 2015 Barolo Mosconi is no exception. Its dark and spicy notes are very polished and graceful in this vintage but with considerable tightness to the tannins that will soften with time. This wine offers ample volume and girth, but it carries its weight with elegance. Once the bottle has reached maturity, it would be a great pairing match to rabbit." Robert Parker

"Aromatic depth here, drawing you in with cascading layers of flowers and leaves, fresh-tilled earth laced with woody spices, white pepper and fresh red fruit. The palate carries a very sturdy frame of fine, dense tannins. This is placed in the top league of 2015 Barolo wines. Long and succulent build through the finish." James Suckling

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2014 (BIO)

Chiara Boschis Cannubi enchants with feminine qualities. Floral scent, earthy notes of forest and mushrooms, raspberry on the palate and a hint of chocolate, with silky tannins without a hint of astringency. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2014 Barolo Cannubi perhaps shows less textural richness in this vintage. What it lacks in volume, it makes up for in beautiful aromatic intensity. The bouquet offers territory-driven tones of forest berry, wild rose and dried violets. The freshness and the brightness of those aromas are well intact. The mouthfeel is lean, but it does have ample structure at the back with bright acidity and polished tannins. This expression of Cannubi from Chiara Boschis can be described in a single word: elegant." Robert Parker

"Some chocolate aromas sitting across attractive spice-poached cherries. This has good aromatic clarity. The palate has a very neatly arranged, well-structured style, offering a nice tannin and acid interplay through the finish. This is in good form." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    E. Pira & Figli
    Piedmont
    E. Pira & Figli

After the death of Luigi Pira, good advice was expensive because his sisters could not continue the traditional family business in the middle of Barolo. But after about a year, the Piedmont winery was sold to Luigi's long-time friends, the Boschis family. The previous owner had already been a myth during his lifetime and the last winemaker in Barolo to mash his grapes with his feet. When Chiara Boschi, a very young and energetic woman, took over the business from her parents in the eighties, she quickly picked up on the achievements of the noble vineyard in the Langhe.

Chiara is passionate about her work, which is sometimes very hard, and accompanies all the phases between the vine and the bottling line with attention. In the course of time, the winemaker has refined her wine style and developed it into a balanced harmony. Their plants are smoother today and reach drinking maturity a little earlier. The wines are ageing capable and convince in the course of the years by an unusual complexity and depth. To the E. Pira Winery & Figli counting magnificent vineyards is worked in an extremely environmentally friendly way, chemical substances are taboo in all plots. The grapes are always of the highest quality.

The intelligent, technically very experienced and always friendly landowner has joined the Piedmontese group "Langa in" which, among other things, revolutionised Barolo through shorter maceration times and the use of barriques. When Chiara publicly presents her own labels, she always seems very distinguished and eloquent to her interlocutors. But their attention is not only focused on the excellent wines. Together with some other disciples, the winemaker also produces Castelmagno, the most famous cheese in Piedmont, which is coveted by gourmets. (superiore)

"The range of wines available from the vineyards is excellent, from the famous Cannubi to the interesting Via Nuova and the Mosconi, which comes from an important plot of land in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba was born."Gambero Rosso
