“Al Passo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019
Al Passo is named after the small forest on the highest hill of Tolaini - a magical place with breathtaking panoramic views of the countryside and sunsets over the towers of Siena. The wine is as unique as the forest, showcasing the natural affinity of Sangiovese and Merlot. Rich garnet with ruby. Intense and enticing bouquet of ripe fruit, orange zest and spicy oak notes, palate with ripe fruit and fresh acidity, balanced, medium body, long final with a fine salty vein. SUPERIORE.DE
"Strong ruby red with light rim. In the nose scent of sweet blackberries and some blackcurrant, slightly smoky aftertaste. On the palate marked by lively freshness." Falstaff
"An expressive, fruity style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum, floral and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and lively, with a lingering aftertaste of red fruit and herbs." Wine Spectator
"This entry-level blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot offers outstanding value. The 2019 Al Passo shows bright energy and vertical lift. There are aromas of sweet cherry, black pepper, cinnamon and crushed stone. You get a wide spectrum of aromas over a mid-weight body and soft texture." Wine Advocate
"A firm, polished red with subtle blackberry, blueberry and violet aromas, as well as some cedar, following through to a full body with fresh acidity, chewy tannins and a linear finish. Needs a couple of years to open. Try after 2024." James Suckling
"The 2019 Al Passo is rich, ample and generous. Healthy dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon turbocharge Sangiovese, adding depth and structure. Red-fleshed Sangiovese fruit emerges over time. The 2019 is deep and quite fleshy, but it also has a good deal of brightness to balance some of its more overt leanings." Vinous

“Vigna Montebello Sette” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2019
Stylistically balanced, very finesse-rich Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from a small single vineyard (vineyard no. 7) in the Castelnuovo-Berardenga area, where the temperatures are always somewhat higher than in the rest of the Chianti Classico. Dark shining ruby. Elegant bouquet of the single-varietal Sangiovese of red berries with very delicate notes of tobacco. Salty on the palate, shows a lot of pressure, very clear, compact fruit, builds up with tightly woven tannin, very intense and long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Montebello Sette is a potent, heady wine that also shows the previous style here. Macerated cherry, plum, mocha, new leather, licorice and a kiss of French oak all meld together. This potent, layered Gran Selezione offers plenty of impact in a dense, extracted style." Vinous
"A supple red wine with aromas of preserved cherries and plums that fade into eucalyptus and Tuscan scrub on the palate as it evolves. The tannins are rather firm and finish with a slightly astringent feel, so give it time." Wine Spectator
"It is still very youthful and slightly reductive, but clearly shows the dark fruit of Chianti Classico in the south. Blackcurrant and plum are plump and mouth-filling, while nuances of damp earth, smoke and vanilla add intrigue in the background. The tannins are strong but well pronounced, giving the wine an appropriate power. This wine needs another year to develop its complexity and site specificity." Decanter
"A concentrated and very polished Chianti Classico with aromas and flavours of black cherry, gravel and minerals. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a concentrated finish. Bark and berry character on the finish. Firm and racy. It will get better in a year or two, but I like the focus it has." James Suckling

The story sounds adventurous and almost invented: As a young man Pier Luigi Tolaini emigrated to Canada to earn the necessary money for the foundation of a winery in Tuscany. After having done many odd jobs at first, the emigrant in North America became a powerful forwarder with a large fleet of vehicles. In 1998 the successful entrepreneur returned to his homeland and acquired the two estates San Giovanni and Montebello, situated between Pianella and Vagliagli near Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico area. Only two years later the winery was finished. Another two years passed before Pier Luigi was able to enjoy the first bottled wine. After a few stylistic adjustments, the Tolaini Winery now produces five high-quality wines.
The fact that the Patriot, who did not fit into any scheme, was quickly successful, can play in the league of the Supertoskaner and regularly receives high ratings from wine experts is due to the fact that he leaves nothing to chance with his team in the 50 hectare and very densely planted vineyards. Only the best grapes should find their way into the avant-garde cellar. Although the winery favours native grape varieties in Tuscany - above all the Sangiovese grape - he can also warm up for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Tolaini does not overestimate the use of wood for vinification. They primarily uses small barrels. The head oenologist and winery manager Francesco Rosi is assisted by Luca D'Attoma, a top-class consultant, for production.
Picconero, a cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is one of Tolaini's top wines that has received many awards. The red wines Valdisanti and Al Passo also play in the upper wine league. For some years now, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from single vineyard and a beautiful "Entry chianti" the assortment. SUPERIORE.DE
"Meticulous care in the vineyard according to the Bordeaux model and little useless coercion in the cellar make Pier Luigi Tolaini's still rather young winery an important company in Chianti Classico."Gambero Rosso
