• "Al Passo" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

“Al Passo” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

Al Passo is named after the small wood on the highest hill of Tolaini - a magical place with a breathtaking panorama of the landscape and the sunsets over the towers of Siena. As unique as the forest is the wine, which presents the natural affinity of Sangiovese and Merlot. Intense and enticing bouquet of ripe fruit and spicy oak notes, on the palate with ripe fruit and fresh acidity, balanced, medium body, long final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich garnet with ruby. Compact fruit, slightly candied, orange zest and pickled cherries, fine green spice. On the palate very drinkable, after elderberries, juicy, crisp, of medium weight, long salty aftertaste." Falstaff

"The 2016 Al Passo is bold and juicy, not to mention absolutely delicious. Fresh, vibrant and full of character, the 2016 hits all the right notes. Sangiovese red fruits are nicely pushed forward. Al Passo is such a pretty and inviting wine. I very much like the energy here. Bright aromatic top notes add a kick of energy on the finish." Vinous

"You'll find sturdy notes of tilled earth in the 2016 Al Passo, with lots of intensity and ripe fruit. It would make a nice pairing with a good old spaghetti al ragù. The wine is balanced and bright without too much concentration or heft. It feels very Tuscan. This is Tolaini's base wine and you get excellent value." Robert Parker

"Black currant fruit signals this supple red, focused by refined tannins and bright acidity. Cedar, iron and tobacco notes add depth as this winds down on the long finish." Wine Spectator

"A really endearing red that shows dried herbs, fresh blueberries, tobacco and cedar. Lithe and very tangy on the palate, which is medium-to full-bodied, elegant and dialed-in. The fine tannins add to a delicate but muscular impression on the medium-chewy finish." James Suckling

    • "Vallenuova" Chianti Classico DOCG 2018

      “Vallenuova” Chianti Classico DOCG 2018

Chianti Classico Vallenuova has the potential to become a favourite wine. It is the archetypal expression of Sangiovese from a single vineyard, which could not be more typical and authentic. Lively, sparkling ruby, in the fragrance some cedar wood and small forest berries, in addition spices, beetroot and white pepper. On the palate leather, tobacco and a hint of citrus fruit, in the final it presents itself pleasantly slender with a convincing drinking freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous deep ruby. Beguiling nose of concentrated sweet and spicy strawberry and cherry fruit with notes of cooked rhubarb and a hint of iron. Succulent and tangy strawberry and cherry on the palate with velvety tannins. An elegant, truly satisfying wine, and a much better deal than entry-level burgundy, for sure." Jancis Robinson

"Aromas of plums, cherries and hints of balsamic and citrus fruit follow through to a medium body, light tannins and a fresh finish with lively acidity." James Suckling

    • "Vigna Montebello Sette" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015

“Vigna Montebello Sette” Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2015

Stylistically well-balanced, very finesse-rich Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from a small single vineyard (vineyard no. 7) in the Castelnuovo-Berardenga area, where temperatures are always somewhat higher than in the rest of Chianti Classico. Elegant bouquet of pure Sangiovese, fine red berries, very delicate tobacco notes. Salty on the palate, shows a lot of pressure, builds up with gripping, hearty tannin. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark glowing ruby. Elegant and delicate nose of ripe cherries and strawberries, fine rose. Juicy and clear on the palate, shows clear fruit with tightly woven tannin, slightly salty, long finish." Falstaff

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Montebello Sette shows the darker side of Sangiovese. Black cherry, cedar, licorice and chocolate are some of the many notes that develop in the glass. Readers will find a sumptuous, extroverted Chianti Classico built on texture and depth more than anything else. Here, too, the style is that of the previous era, and yet there is no denying the wine's beauty." Vinous

"A spicy and decadent Chianti Classico that shows plenty of dried cherries, vanilla, mahogany and bark. Full-bodied with integrated but drying tannins, some good acidity and a round, fruit-driven finish. Drink from 2023." James Suckling

"The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette feels just as important as it sounds. It offers big, mature and dense fruit that you can chew on. This pure Sangiovese carries itself with great fullness, generous fruit and nicely integrated tannins, and it begs for a steak au poivre. You can't overstate the thickness and softness here." Robert Parker

"This is tightly wound, fresh and austere now, its cherry, almond, mineral and tobacco flavors compressed. Hard to see where this is going, yet no one element sticks out, so the potential is fine." Wine Spectator

    • "Valdisanti" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Valdisanti” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

The grapes of this Supertuscan come from the San Giovanni vineyard near San Giovanni a Cerreto. In the church next to the vineyard there is a painting by Rutilo Manetti showing Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni). Deep ruby red, youthful, rich, dark fruit, berry and cassis aromas merge with the French oak. On the palate with deep, subtle fruit aromas and an excellent balance of fruit and tannin, along with some smoke, liquorice and tar. A rich, almost opulent red with excellent structure and great ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"This Tuscan blend is all about richness and fullness, with 18 months in French oak affording it expansive notes of spice and tobacco. The 2015 Valdisanti is a very nice red to enjoy with a nice plate of your favorite grilled meats." Robert Parker

"Beautiful aromas of blackberries and chocolate follow through to a full body with juicy tannins and a savory finish. Chewy now, but will soften out nicely with bottle age. Try after 2021." James Suckling

"The 2015 Valdisanti, Tolaini's Cabernet Sauvignon blend is a rich, full-bodied beauty. Dark cherry, plum, chocolate, cedar, menthol and tobacco all flesh out as this succulent, beautifully layered wine shows off its personality. Valdisanti is decidedly opulent and muscular, but all the elements fall into place so gracefully." Vinous

    • "Picconero" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Picconero” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

Deep dark, impenetrable ruby with violet reflections. Opulent, warm bouquet of fully ripe cherries, plum, liquorice, young leather with a touch of French oak spice. On the palate it is powerful and firm, with a brilliant structure and firm tannins. With increasing aeration it reveals its good structure and distinguished elegance. Picconero never seems wide or too heavy until the long finish, but convinces completely with a terrific energy and complexity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep dark, rich garnet. Delicate graphite in the nose, smoky, then after ripe cassis, dark chocolate, blackberries, salt. Very balanced palate, discreetly noticeable use of wood, yet elegant, powerful, with lots of juice, full-bodied, put it away and enjoy it in five years." Falstaff

"Aromas of violets, lavender and blackberries follow through to a full body with firm and chewy tannins. A lot of wood showing now, but will come together with age. Try after 2021." James Suckling

"Packed with sweet, ripe blackberry and blueberry fruit, this red is lush and polished, accented by rosemary, thyme, graphite and oak spice notes. Dusty tannins line the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Picconero Tenuta Montebello is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Franc that pours out lots of dark fruit and plum. This is a very nice, juicy and balanced wine with good thickness, a great match for iron steak and blue cheese butter sauce. In general, I've found these wines from Tolini to be top notch, with succulent tones of ripe fruit and pretty intensity. This one is at the top of the pyramid." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Tolaini
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Tolaini

The story sounds adventurous and almost invented: As a young man Pier Luigi Tolaini emigrated to Canada to earn the necessary money for the foundation of a winery in Tuscany. After having done many odd jobs at first, the emigrant in North America became a powerful forwarder with a large fleet of vehicles. In 1998 the successful entrepreneur returned to his homeland and acquired the two estates San Giovanni and Montebello, situated between Pianella and Vagliagli near Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico area. Only two years later the winery was finished. Another two years passed before Pier Luigi was able to enjoy the first bottled wine. After a few stylistic adjustments, the Tolaini Winery now produces five high-quality wines.

The fact that the Patriot, who did not fit into any scheme, was quickly successful, can play in the league of the Supertoskaner and regularly receives high ratings from wine experts is due to the fact that he leaves nothing to chance with his team in the 50 hectare and very densely planted vineyards. Only the best grapes should find their way into the avant-garde cellar. Although the winery favours native grape varieties in Tuscany - above all the Sangiovese grape - he can also warm up for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Tolaini does not overestimate the use of wood for vinification. They primarily uses small barrels. The head oenologist and winery manager Francesco Rosi is assisted by Luca D'Attoma, a top-class consultant, for production.

Picconero, a cuvée of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is one of Tolaini's top wines that has received many awards. The red wines Valdisanti and Al Passo also play in the upper wine league. For some years now, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from single vineyard and a beautiful "Entry chianti" the assortment. SUPERIORE.DE

"Meticulous care in the vineyard according to the Bordeaux model and little useless coercion in the cellar make Pier Luigi Tolaini's still rather young winery an important company in Chianti Classico."Gambero Rosso
