After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality.       "Mid ruby with orange tinges. Ripe, cool raspberry with quite a bit of concentration underneath, but still quite closed. Concentrated raspberry and strawberry palate with a linear, precise vein of acidity running all the way through. It gets more perfumed by the second while sitting in the glass. Bags of powdery tannins lining the concentrated, fresh raspberry fruit." Jancis Robinson

      Though the summer was cool and wet, the last rainfall in Barbaresco was on 12 August. Harvest started exactly two months later, allowing the grapes to ripen under much improved conditions. Quantities were down 30%, but quality was high enough for Produttori to craft their cru Riservas. Bottled 20 days prior to tasting, the 2014 is uncharacteristically forward with a veritable explosion of red cherry. Enchanting notes of rose petal, violet, blood orange peel and pepper follow. Bright acidity accentuates the tannins, but they are fine and dissolve effortlessly. While this comes across as approachable now, it might shut down in bottle and I'd give it some time following its release next spring. I suspect it will be a mid-term rather than a long ager."       "Balsamic aromas of menthol, wild thyme and juniper complement the black cherry core of this muscular red, with dense tannins lending support. Though a bit more severe now than its peers, this is balanced overall and will age well." Wine Spectator
      "Always one of my favorite wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello lays out a broad and soft mouthfeel, with tannins that have already been polished and integrated thanks to ample time in the bottle already. It's safe to say that this Ovello cru loyally demonstrates the level of richness and textural softness that this site is known for. The bouquet is redolent of bright berry fruit with cherry, blackberry and plum. So, the 2014 vintage was a warm one at the end of the growing season, and you taste a little bit of that ripeness here too." Robert Parker

    Today it is not only one of the best cooperative wineries in Europe, but also offers its wines at very customer-friendly prices: The Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative, newly created in 1958 by the local priest Don Fiorino Marengo and now managed with a steady hand by Aldo Vacca and Gianni Testa.

    Originally, the Cantina Sociale was founded by Domizio Cavazza in 1894 and brought the first wines on the market, which were officially called Barbaresco. From 1913, the year of Cavazza's death, economically difficult times followed. The First World War, a new outbreak of the phylloxera plague, a strong infestation of the vines with downy mildew and the fascist rule, which encouraged winegrowers to cultivate cereals instead of wine, led to the closure of the winery in the mid-twenties. Today, more than fifty affiliated winegrowers cultivate almost one-sixth of the total area under cultivation in the Barbaresco region.

    The winegrowing families manage their 200 to 400 metre high plots autonomously, but follow strict guidelines of the Board of Directors regarding soil and vine care. Since the plants grow in nine of the best locations in the denomination, the wine guide Gambero Rossodescribes the cooperative's range of wines, consisting of almost a dozen precious drops and supplemented by the Riserva line in good wine-growing years, as one of the best in the world.     From the very beginning, the declared aim of the Piedmontese was to produce high-quality wines and to limit themselves to the Nebbiolo grape variety. To this day, only Barbaresco and Nebbiolo base wines are produced in the traditional style. The grapes for Barbaresco come from the premium vineyards of Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajé, Montefico, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Since 1967, some of the cooperative's top-quality wines have been marketed as Auslesen - always under the vineyard name and as Riserva. The classic preparation with extended maceration periods and large barrels form the basis for extremely long-lived drops that clearly distance themselves from fashion trends.

    The cooperative Cantina Sociale dei Produttori del Barbaresco was the first producer in the region to produce wines from cru sites, with the wineries of Angelo Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, which are still important today. This approach was a first step in the direction of today's official location cartography of the fascinating denomination. In good years the cooperative produces Barbaresco from about half of the harvested grapes. About 30 percent of the wines are labelled as Barbaresco individual sites (Riserva) and about 20 percent as Nebbiolo Langhe. SUPERIORE.DE
