“Riff” Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC 2021 (BIO)
The RIFF project is a cooperation between Alois Lageder and local winegrowers in the Veneto region, where the grapes also thrive in selected vineyards. Since the 2018 vintage, the popular RIFF Pinot Grigio delle Venezie is not only certified organic, but has also been given a new look by Austrian artist Nanna Prieler. On the label, segments of stylised ammonites tell the story of the formation of the mountain landscape on which the vines for the Pinot Grigio RIFF now stand: From the ocean with its coral reefs to the unique terroir in which many fossils of former ocean dwellers can still be discovered today.
Bright light yellow with greenish shimmer. The aroma is finely fruity, floral-mineral with delicate notes of tropical fruits. On the palate, RIFF Pinot Gris is precise, lively and fresh, with a medium body and a harmonious finish. A perfect companion to light Mediterranean dishes or simply solo on the balcony or terrace. “Versalto” Pinot Bianco Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 (BIO)
Since the 2020 vintage, Haberle has been called Versalto and is now Demeter-certified. Diversity as a focus: Versalto is characterised by geological, microclimatic and cultural contrasts. Its grapes come, on the one hand, from the Haberlehof in Buchholz on the eastern side of the Etsch Valley and, on the other, from the opposite sites in Penon above Margreid. Both vineyards are located at about 500 metres and ensure optimal conditions for the variety.

"The 2020 Pinot Bianco Versalto keeps me coming back to the glass with its spicy bouquet of hot peppers and curry leaves, offset by cooling notes of cracked slate and freshly sliced Granny Smith apples. This is round and soothing, with a core of salty minerals and tart orchard fruits that balance the expression quite well. The interplay of sweet and sour really excites the senses, as this tapers off long with lemony concentration. This zesty Pinot Bianco is packed full of energetic tension. "The 2020 Chardonnay Gaun needs some time to unwind in the glass. A burst of savory herbs, crushed stone and underbrush first greets the senses. With swirling, a prettier mix of ripe apple, nectarine and hints of mace can be found. It’s silky with medium-bodied weight and a liquid rock-like minerality that balances it all out, while cascading white pit fruits and savory spices across the palate. This finishes a bit short yet crisp and with a salty flair. Don’t be in a rush, the 2020 needs a little time to freshen up. After spontaneous fermentation, the Gaun matures for nine months on the lees in a combination of neutral barrels and stainless steel tanks." Vinous

The name "Mimuèt" (to my taste) comes from Ladin. Convinced that South Tyrol offers the best conditions for the Pinot Noir grape variety, Alois Lageder paid particular attention to it at a very early stage. His goal is to produce wines with precision, lightness and filigree structure. Garnet red with ruby reflexes. Pinot Noir Mimuèt smells of ripe black cherries, flowers and spices. “Surmont” Riesling Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020 (BIO)
Here comes Surmont, the successor to Rain Riesling. As in the past, part of the grapes come from the South Tyrolean lowlands, while the other part now comes from the Valle Isarco from high and cool sites on soils of volcanic origin, which give the wine a fresher, almost alpine style.
Bright, straw-yellow colour with a slight greenish tinge. Clean, distinct, fragrant varietal aroma with fine fruity notes (peach, pear). Balanced, medium-bodied. Fresh, juicy finish. Fórra, an elegant small-batch white, is made purely from Manzoni Bianco, has an interesting history and an exciting development. Lageder's project with this grape variety began several years ago and resulted in the crossing of Rhine Riesling and Pinot Bianco. In the cellar, very traditional methods were used - for a lot of freshness and liveliness. Contact with the skins over several days sharpens the wine's profile. After spontaneous fermentation, Fórra remains on the lees for several months in wooden barrels. Fresh wind in the probably most famous winery of South Tyrol. With Alois Clemens Lageder as managing director, the sixth generation is entering the almost two hundred year old family winery. He is supported by his two sisters Anna and Helena, who are responsible for events, marketing and sales. Alois Clemens Lageder studied sociology and economics. After various stations in Germany and abroad, where he deepened his education in viticulture and oenology, he joined the family business in 2015. Here he now continues what his father Alois - who is considered a pioneer in the field of biodynamics - started: He is gradually converting the farm to biodynamic farming methods. Nothing will change in terms of quality; on the contrary, there is probably no biodynamically working winery far and wide that is more successful.
In practice, this means dispensing with chemical-synthetic plant protection and using preparations and homeopathic teas as remedies. This also means that the winery works closely with local farmers who bring their cows, cattle and sheep to graze in the vineyards of Alois Lageder during the autumn and winter months. This revives the old tradition of transhumance. It helps to increase the vitality of the vines and the biodiversity in the vineyard. The family now cultivates a good 55 hectares biodynamically, and the express goal is to motivate all of the approximately 80 winegrowing partners from all over South Tyrol to switch to biodynamic cultivation by 2024.
The historical roots go back six generations to Johann Lageder, who in 1823 laid the foundation stone for today's company in Bolzano. His successors began to press wine themselves and bought the first vineyards. The most successful was Alois III, who in 1934 acquired the Löwengang estate in Margreid, the southernmost tip of the South Tyrolean Wine Road, and motivated numerous winegrowers to deliver the grapes to him. In the mid-1970s, Alois Lageder, together with his sister and brother-in-law Luis v. Dellemann, took over the estate, and led it to success with his strict focus on quality. He always relied on collaboration with winegrowers who were friends of his.
In 1995, the new cellar building was constructed according to the most modern building biology methods and with renewable energy from water, geothermal energy and solar power and became a showpiece. The cooperation with artists became inspiration and the winery became an event location.
The range is as varied as the locations in the Adige Valley, which was once a huge glacier that dug its way south from the Alps and Dolomites, bringing with it all kinds of rock. From volcanic porphyry, granite and quartz, petrified corals of a primeval sea to gravel, loam and clay, you can find everything here. "If you plant the right grape varieties in the right locations, not much can go wrong," said Alois Lageder with a smile. Cold winds from the mountains alternate with warm breezes from the south, and the ventilation and temperature differences are ideal. Warm days, cool nights and moderate rainfall are the secret of success throughout South Tyrol. Here in the southernmost part of course even more so. And even though Lageder's portfolio includes about 80% white wines, two red wines, in addition to the Chardonnay "Löwengang", are responsible for the worldwide fame of this wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon "Cor Römigberg" and the Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) "Krafuss" have become cult wines and part of the success story of South Tyrol, even part of the wine story of Italy.
Since 2017 Alois Clemens takes another, very creative step with the birth of COMETS. It is the designation for wines from mostly very rare or in South Tyrol not at all or no longer native grape varieties in the smallest edition, which embody the joy of experimentation, innovation and the play with components. He describes the exciting project as follows: "Some COMETS burn up and are discarded again, while others can become fixed stars and independent wines of the range. Each of the COMETS is unique, quasi like a fingerprint, and the labels of each bottle are individually designed: A comet's tail, painted on with a finger.
The Alois Lageder Winery is one of the 24 wineries worldwide to be awarded the "Robert Parker Green Emblem" in 2021. This certification is awarded by one of the most important international wine critics' media: Robert Parker's "Wine Advocate". This rare distinction is only awarded to producers who are committed to sustainability, long-term environmental protection and biodiversity.
