Barbaresco “La Casa in Collina” DOCG 2020
Terre da Vino's intensely coloured Barbaresco La Casa in Collina has an interesting aroma of flowers, sour cherries, cedar wood and mint chocolate. The juicy flavour is extremely balanced with excellent persistence. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, shiny ruby red colour. Inviting and clear on the nose, of raspberries, precious wood and fine wild strawberries, fragrant. Tightly woven on the palate, juicy, slightly salty, with pleasant pressure, elegant." Falstaff
"A fresh, medium-bodied nebbiolo with a tight and focused red-berry nose and palate, lightly firm tannins and good drive at the end. I like the racy character with lots of fruit pushing through." James Suckling

Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2018
Medium-bodied ruby red, fine rose bouquet with hints of tea and dried herbs. Beautiful black cherry aroma with well-integrated wood notes makes it a balanced and at no point intrusive wine. The 2016 climate also gave this Nebbiolo an impressive precision and straightness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium red; some fruit, tobacco; powerful, juicy, good tartness, very pleasant." Merum
"Developed-looking mid ruby with bricky rim. Brooding, complex, deep nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Generous but not yet fully open fruit, stitched together by gorgeous chewy tannins and ripe acidity. Good medium-term potential." Jancis Robinson

Barbaresco “Spezie” Riserva DOCG 2015
The Nebbiolo grapes for this archetypal Barbaresco come from marl soils at an altitude of about 250 metres. After two years of ageing in large wood and a further 6-7 (!) years of bottle maturity, here comes a wine on the market which, with its perfectly matured tannins and fine sweet melting, is already giving even the most impatient Nebbiolo fan a lot of pleasure.
Ruby red with garnet reflections, convincing, spicy bouquet of violets, moss, rose petals and small red fruits. Nice pressure on the palate, yet open-hearted, fresh and full-bodied, with well-dosed extract-sweet notes of maraschino cherry and a beautiful fruit that promises another great future in combination with the fine-meshed tannin. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich bright cherry red with dark reflections. Inviting bouquet of juicy wild raspberries, blackberries, also something of cardamom and delicate bourbon vanilla. Pleasant on the nose, winds gracefully through the palate, powerful in body with a sparse structure, yet clear, goes into the lingering final with good pressure." Falstaff
"Lustrous maturing ruby with orange tinges. Sweetly scented ripe cherry nose with the merest suggestion of fruit cake and hugely appealing. A succulent mouthful of marasca-cherry fruit with coating tannins. Long, concentrated and highly enjoyable and still not at its peak." Jancis Robinson
"Rich and broad with a fleshy opulence to the wine. Blackberries touched by truffle oil, smoked meats, and dried herb perfume." Decanter
"A solid 2015 Barbaresco with spice, cedar and plum character. Full body, lots of fruit and chewy tannins. This needs time to soften and come together." James Suckling

Barbaresco DOCG 2020
The grapes for the Barbaresco come mainly from the top vineyards Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo. Deep, lively ruby to garnet red. Extensive bouquet of red fruits and pastries with a mineral touch. On the palate, it convinces with a rich, solid structure as well as a continuous development, which ends in a long-smelling final. The leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy shows every year already with its basic Barbaresco what it and its members are capable of. SUPERIORE.DE
"Youthful mid ruby. A proper, concentrated fruit nose, which this vintage is woefully short of. Subtle marasca cherry palate with lots of finely ground tannins; head and shoulders above the rest." Jancis Robinson
"This is aromatic and attractive with notes of dried cherries, hibiscus, cocoa and bark, following through a medium body with polished and refined tannins with velvety texture, and a linear finish. Fresh and floral at the end with a bright red fruit backbone." James Suckling
"The 2020 Barbaresco is a lovely, harmonious wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Forward fruit and soft curves are perhaps a bit uncharacteristic for young Barbaresco but that also make the wine very enjoyable. Juicy red cherry/plum fruit, rose petal, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco all meld together in the glass. Classicists will probably prefer other vintages, but it's hard not to like the 2020 for its charming, effusive personality. At the same time, aeration brings out greater aromatic presence and a good deal of structure, too." Vinous
"Still vinous, with youthful strawberry notes, rosebud, violet, liquorice and a whiff of cinnamon. Savoury and floral on the palate which is dominated by firm, crisp, long acidity and velvety ripe tannins of an amazing quality; perhaps just a bit stern on the aftertaste. Amazing Barbaresco. Here we have the cooperative of Barbaresco and one known as producing some of the best-priced quality wines in all of Langhe." Decanter
"The 2020 Barbaresco boasts an ample set of aromas with wild cherry, blue flower, sweet spice and crushed limestone. As always, the wine paints an exciting and authentic portrait of Nebbiolo, albeit with a little more richness and texture in this vintage. This is especially true in terms of the palate, where the wine offers mid-weight intensity with melting tannins." Wine Advocate

Barbaresco “Nubiola” DOCG 2019
Sparkling ruby colour. Expressive, very fragrant bouquet of red stone fruit, wild berries, mint and leather. Juicy, clear attack with well-proportioned tannins. Wonderfully long finish with ripe berries and spices. SUPERIORE.DE
"A taut, lightly sinewy red informed by a mix of cherry, plum, eucalyptus and tobacco flavors. For now, the balance tips toward the grainy tannins, yet this offers a lasting impression of fruit and savoriness." Wine Spectator
"The Barbaresco Nubiola 2019 is quite a high-flyer in this year's Pelissero range. Aromatically intense and also quite deep, the Nubiola impresses with its balance. The blend of different vineyard sites was clearly an advantage. Bright red fruit, cedar wood, tobacco, orange peel and pomegranate give it a remarkable complexity. Give the tannins a few more years to soften." Vinous

Barbaresco DOCG 2020
Prunotto's Barbaresco shows a strong dose of Nebbiolo personality and opens with balanced notes of dried berries, liquorice, tar and blue flowers. The ensemble is delicate and fresh. What makes this wine so attractive is the fact that it offers such a clear and unadulterated view of the grape, which comes across particularly well in this very attractive drop. The finish is full of elegance and silk. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red colour; reductive red fruit; round attack, barrel-like, coffee, fine tannin, caramel, long, drinky, pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"Aromas of wild raspberries with floral undertones lift from the glass of this classic Barbaresco followed by present but subtle earthy tones. The juicy palate is loaded with tart red fruits balanced by medicinal herbs and sweet spices. Supple tannins are lifted on the finish by the vibrant acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"A dense red, with macerated cherry and berry flavours overshadowed by liquorice, hay, menthol and a hint of leather. Although light, it is intense and persistent, with ripe fruit on the finish. Excellent balance and length." Wine Spectator
"Full of restraint, liquorice, dill, blood orange, intensely floral, with vibrant fruit such as strawberry and orange. It has a lot of volume. Lively freshness to the finish and firm, muscular tannins that are youthful, dusty and yet ripe. A graceful classic for the long haul. Bric Turot is a single vineyard with south-east and south-west exposure in the Pertinace area." Decanterread more- Grape Variety: 100% Nebbiolo

Barbaresco Serraboella DOCG 2020
Medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Deep, concentrated bouquet with some lift and brooding intensity. Concentrated and long, but convincingly balanced by an integrated acidity and a rich layer of sandy tannins. Good potential, even if it can be enjoyed now. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very pale ruby in the glass, with mushroom earthiness, straw, strawberry, cinnamon and a meaty touch. This fierce character is supported by a very savoury attack, with delicate acid, polished and vibrant tannins: a large palate and a lot of details. There is great balance despite a bit of austerity on the finish. Super-classic for ageing." Decanter
"Fresh and crunchy with red fruit, dried herbs, potpourri and moist earth. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins, that are ripe and velvety. Dry and a little chewy at the end with attractive fruit coming through." James Suckling
"Packaged with a black label and eye-catching lettering in red, the Fontanabianca 2020 Barbaresco Serraboella reveals a very fine, almost dusty personality with wild berry, crushed rose and wet river stone. The wine is beautifully balanced, with dry tannins presented next to delicately sweet berry fruit. The Serraboella shows the careful winemaking practiced at this estate. Only 4,000 bottles were made." Wine Advocate
"Reserved yet somewhat haunting on the nose, this wine presents pristine dark-berried fruit aromas, dried rose and savory spices. Warmed and macerated black cherry shines on the palate, accompanied by mouthwatering acidity and a solid earthy bass note with firm, yet fine tannins. This wine is meant to be savored." Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Medium-deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Multi-layered and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by fine-grained tannins. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red wine is fleshy and shows notes of cherries, strawberries, mint and earth, accompanied by a firm, lively structure. Although this wine sounds rather austere now, it is fresh and has a lingering fruity and spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"This wine is lively and racy with ripe raspberries, blackcurrant leaves, rose petals and bergamot. Also dry earth. Medium to full body with crisp tannins and chalky texture. Structured and a little chewy, yet fresh and red-fruited with a mineral finish." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco Bordini 2020 (with fruit from the village of Neive) shows a medium-bodied density with more texture and structure in this vintage. The Bordini is a little more austere in character and savoury overall. This added richness is accompanied by an open approach that makes this wine approachable in the medium term. Or you can wait if you prefer." Wine Advocate
"Black raspberries, medicinal herbs and spiced tea dominate the aromatic profile. The firm palate reveals that the fruit is at the core, surrounded by sweet and savory spices, including notes of cigar box and worn leather. Mouthwatering acidity adds to its appeal." Wine Enthusiast

Barbaresco DOCG 2020
"For us, it is important that a good Barbaresco fully expresses its characteristics: elegance, finesse and harmony. The 2020 vintage has given us a complete wine that is very fascinating and has excellent ageing potential. Although it is drinkable now, we recommend storing a few bottles to observe its development. We are excited to see how it will develop over the coming years." Franco Massolino
The grapes for Massolino's Barbaresco come from the Starderi, Albesani and Serraboella vineyards. Medium garnet red in colour with rust-red highlights. A charming bouquet of bright red fruit, rose petals and violets. Rather delicate on the palate, with an elegance and finesse that is completely convincing even at a young age. As it progresses, it reveals a seductive fruit centre, fine tannins and a well-proportioned acidity structure that opens up a great future for it. Very well made! SUPERIORE.DE
"Neive. Brilliant medium ruby red colour. Quite closed on the nose with hints of dark spices and ripe cherries and a hint of cobbles. Supple, elegant, with mineral notes and powerful tannins. Style of the cool climate." Jancis Robinson
"The Massolino 2020 Barbaresco is somewhat closed at this young stage and still needs a little time in the bottle. You get soft cherries and wild cassis with gravel and blue flowers. It simply needs more time to develop." Wine Advocate
"An effusive style, this red boasts crunchy cherry, raspberry and mineral flavors, accented by flashes of white pepper and underbrush. Delicate, yet with the requisite structure to develop for a decade or more." Wine Spectator
"Fragrant nose with spiced cherries, dried strawberry bush, chocolate and dark spices. Also a hint of bark. Medium-bodied with a spicy character and firm tannin structure. Balanced and even with a velvety finish." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco 2020 is an excellent successor to the 2019. The 2020 is a wine with nerve and grace, bursting with energy. Finely modelled red/purple fruit, lavender, spice, crushed rock and orange peel adorn this expressive, medium-bodied Barbaresco. An explosion of sweet floral and spice notes lifts the gorgeous, wonderfully perfumed, vibrant finish. I love the classicism here." Vinous

Cognos Barbaresco from the top Bordini vineyard is a centred and firm Nebbiolo that is one of the more powerful representatives of the appellation. However, it only reveals its great aromatic potential at second glance: Cherry, blackberry, hints of spice and a little freshly chopped mint. Then some speculoos, walnut, salty tones and tobacco. Acidity and tannin form a perfect symbiosis and at the same time the backbone of this impressive Barbaresco, which will give pleasure for many years to come. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barbaresco Bordini is particularly powerful and powerful in terms of fruit. This expression of a hot vintage offers a medium fruit texture with a classic presentation of cherry, redcurrant, liquorice, blue flower and spice. It needs a few more years of bottle age, but we are not far from optimal drinking maturity." Wine Advocate
"A bright, well-defined red with aromas and flavours of cherries, strawberries, liquorice and wild herbs. Smooth in texture, it firms up nicely, with finely crafted tannins and a lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"Attractive raspberries and cherries with a hint of roselle and red spices. Also some blood orange. Medium to full-bodied, polished and refined with compact tannins and a velvety texture. It is ripe but fresh, with a pure and lively red fruit character and a long finish. Attractive now, but even better after 2025." James Suckling
"Dusty red berries and raspberry aromas intertwine with chalky notes, creating an electric and energetic aromatic profile. The wine showcases fine yet firm tannins, displaying excellent structure with a core of tart red fruits today that will give way over time to more of the wine's savory and mineral characteristics." Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2020
Dark fruits on the nose, nuanced with spices, tar, liquorice and wild berries. The mouthfeel is soft and supple with a lasting and silky texture. Here comes a Nebbiolo that exudes character and personality. Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a precise interpretation of the grape, drawing a fine line between elegance and power with ease. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is redolent of crushed flowers, red berry fruit, mint, white pepper. This mid-weight, nervy Barbaresco has much to offer, especially if the tannins soften a bit. This is the most floral and mid-weight of the Spinetta Barbarescos." Vinous
"Beautiful ripe fruit with citrus and baking spices on both the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that give the wine tension and structure." James Suckling
"The La Spinetta 2020 Barbaresco Bordini has a spicy note on the first nose, reminiscent of cinnamon and a hint of something darker like crushed cloves. This warm vintage Nebbiolo embraces rich fruit aromas of blackberries and dark currants, and there is an earthy side with rusty nails and potting soil. It finishes with high-toned accents of balsamic herbs or eucalyptus oil." Wine Advocate

Barbaresco “Tulin” DOCG 2019
The Barbaresco Tulin is a convincing middle ground in Giorgio Pelissero's range. It has the richness that one usually finds in his wines, but also a good portion of freshness. Floral and spicy nuances interweave with a core of red and purple berry fruits that give it a striking inner fragrance and energy. Tulin is an impressive wine that stands out for its balance. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Barbaresco Tulin is a dense, powerful wine that shows an abundance of dark red fruits, spices, mocha and blood orange. It has good depth, but the 2019 feels like it is still emerging. Present tannins give the Tulin a rather darker feel." Vinous
"An expressive Barbaresco, boasting cherry, raspberry, floral, licorice and menthol aromas and flavors. Rich and harmonious, with well-wrought tannins lending support throughout. Shows fine balance and a long aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"One of the historic wines of Prunotto, owned by Marchesi Antinor (with a vineyard outside Alba), this is a lean and streamlined expression with mild aromas of dried cherries and redcurrants. The bouquet is rather simple, although there are some spices and savoury notes that give it depth." Wine Advocate
"This red wine offers ample flavours of cherries, strawberries and hibiscus, complemented by eucalyptus and grassy notes. It becomes leaner and firmer on the finish, with toasted and iron accents providing detail. Graceful and multi-layered." Wine Spectator
"Crisp and fruity with very fine tannins and bright raspberry, cherry and spice aromas and flavours. You want to drink it immediately, but it should age well. Citrus notes on the finish." James Suckling
"Focused aromas of wild strawberry and raspberry combined with fresh bay leaf, wildflowers and sandalwood rise from the glass of this serious wine. Flavors of cranberry and tart cherry pop off the vibrant palate with notes of leather and tea finishing with supple tannins and a persistent minerality." Wine Enthusiast
"Full of restraint, liquorice, dill, blood orange, intensely floral, with lively fruit such as strawberry and orange. It has a lot of volume. Lively freshness to the finish and firm, muscular tannins that are youthful, dusty and yet ripe. A graceful classic for the long haul. Bric Turot is a single vineyard with south-east and south-west exposure in the Pertinace area." Decanter

Barbaresco DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Ceretto's entry-level Barbaresco comes from different sites, mostly younger vines from Asili (35%) and the lower part of Bernadot (65%). Bright, elegant ruby red. It has full energy and vivacity and offers excellent persistence and remarkable balance. On the nose, sweet red cherry, mint, pine, liquorice and candied orange peel. Taut and ferruginous on the palate, very juicy, salty, stretches precisely across the tongue, with some pressure, considerable juicy-long finish. After good aeration already impressively accessible when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright garnet red with ruby reflections. Intense nose of sour cherry and rosehip, then some leather, tobacco and forest floor, complex. On the palate filigree mouth entry, with soft tannin, harmonious and well balanced, elegant, juicy finish." Falstaff
"This has aromas of oak and toasted nut that come to the forefront while berry and spice stay in the background. Tightly wound and primary, the palate offers raspberry jam, vanilla and licorice alongside close-grained tannins that grip the close. Fresh acidity keeps it bright." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Barbaresco is bright and nicely focused. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, tobacco and spice are lifted. Veins of supporting tannin and acid give this mid-weight, nervy Barbaresco lovely energy. The 2019 is elegant and also quite promising." Vinous
"The 2019 Barbaresco displays high-toned aromas of sweet raspberries, rose petals and liquorice that anticipates an open-knit palate with clear-cut flavours of crunchy raspberries and redcurrants. Ripe acidity and well-extracted tannins extend the attractively floral and balsamic finish." Decanter
"This is a very firm young Barbaresco with dried strawberry, crunchy fruit and fresh flowers, such as roses. Bitter lemon and tar, too. Full-bodied, chewy and polished. Flavorful finish." James Suckling
"The Ceretto 2019 Barbaresco is an organic wine that paints a clear picture of a beautiful vintage. Tart cherry, white licorice and dusty earth lift from the bouquet and give this wine a sharp sense of focus and intensity. Ceretto has released a superb set of Barbarescos this year, starting with this classic expression." Wine Advocate

Barbaresco DOCG 2018
Bright and radiant, with lots of Nebbiolo character, it is a successful interpretation of the terroir and shows the great class of the winery. On the nose, sweet red cherries, tobacco, mint, anise and white pepper. Medium-bodied and graceful on the palate with a good balance of perfume, acidity and structure. With further bottle ageing, it looks forward to a great evolution. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-light red; fruity-smoky, also barrel, caramel, rubber, inviting; fruit, medium-bodied, powerful, lots of round tannin, length." Merum
"Sparkling, medium-dense ruby garnet. Inviting, very finely marked nose with pronounced notes of wild raspberry, rosehip and black tea. Substantial, with pithy tannin on the palate, showing lots of pressure, savoury, lingers long." Falstaff
"Straight medium ruby. Perfumed cherry fruit with subtle oak and a hint of cumin. Fresh, supple cherry fruit with a spicy note and firm but ripe and crisp tannins. Great length and juiciness." Jancis Robinson
"A rich, earthy style that evokes aromas of cherry, raspberry, iron and tobacco. Broad tannins announce the finish, but it remains balanced and long." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Barbaresco Pio is noble, elegant and wonderfully polished. Sweet spices, cedar, tobacco, leather and dried cherries open up effortlessly. This graceful, medium-bodied Barbaresco has a lot going for it and is very drinkable from the start. The silky, ethereal qualities of the Nebbiolo are evident." Vinous
"Pio Cesare stands out for its classics, and this wine is one of them. The 2018 Barbaresco (released a year later than its competitors) offers a light ripeness of candied raspberry with lilac, tarry smoke, cedar and spice. The mouthfeel is silky smooth with gently integrated tannins." Wine Advocate
"Strawberries with notes of walnuts, asphalt and bark. Also dried flowers. Full-bodied with fine, racy tannins and a very long, beautiful finish. Fine tannins. Shows excellent length for the vintage." James Suckling
"The Barbaresco of Pio Cesare, always a certainty, from the Treiso and San Rocco sub-areas. On the nose, red currants in jam, with nuances of star anise and rhubarb. The mouthfeel is crisp, dense, with spicy tannins and a fruity finish." Luca Gardini

Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva DOCG 2017
Rio Sordo Riserva is particularly dense, rich and balanced. On the nose we find roses, spices and raspberries. On the palate, it is very complex and has a wonderful depth and juiciness. Rio Sordo offers a taut and sharp fruit on the surface, which is rounded off with some tannin and crispness on the finish. The floral notes that develop with good aeration or further bottle ageing into the final make this Barbaresco Riserva irresistible even when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Maturing ruby with orange rim. A little dusty and brooding with hints of damson and cinnamon. Supple, tangy and full on the palate with plenty of chewy tannins. Very long and intense and accessible, but can age too." Jancis Robinson
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo shows the natural intensity of the year, and yet retains a good bit of the aromatic lift that is so typical of Nebbiolo at its best. Silky, perfumed and poised, the Rio Sordo is impressive in this tasting. Spice and floral notes lift a core of red-toned fruit in this mid-weight yet packed Barbaresco from the Produttori. This has very fine potential." Vinous
"Delivers depth and velvety texture, which are a perfect foil for the saturated cherry and raspberry fruit flavors. Underlined by mineral and spice notes, this is harmonious and long, with a mineral aftertaste. Feels approachable now, but this has structure and will age beautifully." Wine Spectator
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo has a mineral character and a sleek, firm approach that gives this wine its special identity. The wine is polished, almost glossy in texture with blackcurrant, plum and wild rose, and the tannins are gripping, although the Rio Sordo sports a lean to medium-rich density overall." Wine Advocate

Limitation of 3 articles per customerBarbaresco Muncagota Riserva DOCG 2017
Muncagota is rich, deep and super-expressive every year, hitting all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, spices, leather and liquorice all come out, but all very hesitantly and with a lot of aeration, better: with further bottle ageing. Muncagota is one of the examples from the famous series of nine Riserve that clearly needs time. And time should be given to it, and the patient will be richly rewarded. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous deep ruby. Brooding and a little rich with sweet cinnamon hints but still a little closed on the nose. Sour cherry and damson on the palate with a layer of fine, sandy tannins and succulent acidity. Can be approached now, the damson hints seems to suggest this won't age forever, so it will be at its peak in four to five years' time." Jancis Robinson
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is one of the lighter wines in this range. Floral and medium in body, the 2017 gives the impression of a wine that will open earlier than some of the others. It, too, has pretty imposing tannins though, so a few years in bottle are advisable. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry, mint and white pepper linger." Vinous
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota plays some of its best cards in terms of texture, offering silky tannins, firmness and a long-lasting veil of fruit flavors. Cassis, wild cherry, camphor ash, spice and iron ore are aromatic protagonists. This wine is lean and compact but very linear and focused." Wine Advocate
"Presents a bright, pure expression of cherry, strawberry, rose and grassy aromas and flavors underscored by a vein of minerality, with tannins that flex their muscles on the long finish. Intense but balanced, with tension that bodes well for future evolution." Wine Spectator

Pajé is a small vineyard near the village of Barbaresco, whose calcareous soils usually produce bright and floral wines, and this wine impressively fulfils that expectation, combined with an already remarkable density that it is only beginning to reveal. On the nose, it shows intensity and purity, with penetrating aromas of red fruits. On the attack, it is supple, luminous but weighty and very focused. The lively acidity adds tension and persistence to the finish. Already enticing, but with the unclouded prospect of further positive surprises! SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich cherry fruit with hints of mint and savoury salty hints. Great depth. Compact succulent red fruit that is much more embryonic than the nose has it. Fantastic length but truly slow, while at the same time you could approach it now." Jancis Robinson
"Leads with a whiff of freshly mown hay, which leads to cherry, currant, tar and eucalyptus flavors. Linear and chewy, with hints of underbrush and iron on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is a fine choice for readers who enjoy wines of freshness, verve and energy. Dark fruit, menthol, spice, pine and crushed rocks are beautifully delineated. This is an especially chiseled wine in the range of 2017 Riservas. I very much like the balance of richness and vibrancy. In a word: classic." Vinous
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè is impressive on all fronts, but especially in terms of aromas. There's so much brightness here with red and purple fruits, rust and a dark note of clove or exotic spice. No element is out of place, but together they help to build the intensity of this balanced wine. It shows a soft, velvety texture, and perhaps there is a little more ripeness overall in this warm vintage." Wine Advocate

The site Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is, as always, one of the outstanding wines of this series. It shows the energy and tension so typical of this site, but with a slightly riper profile than is the norm. Ovello dives straight into the volatile Nebbiolo aromas, focusing on liquorice, tar, blue flowers and campfire ash. The palate is full-bodied, with flavours of crushed raspberries, juicy Marasca cherries, liquorice and nutmeg, and firm, tight-knit tannins. The fresh acidity adds tension and balance. Looking at the timeline of Riserva wines, this wine reaches the magical threshold where Nebbiolo begins to unfold its unique aromatic appeal and mystique ... SUPERIORE.DE
"Open-hearted and with a beautiful play of fruit, cherry, red berries; animating drinking flow with an earthy and delicately balsamic note, plus good inner density and sturdy tannin, radiates the warmth of the year and is round to the end." Weinwisser
"Quite a tight nose but with plenty of minerals and, with aeration, a lift of ripe sour cherry. Juicy cherry on the palate with bags of chewy tannins underneath the fruit. Very long, juicy and animating. Has potential." Jancis Robinson
"A tight and pretty Barbaresco with a solid depth of fruit that shows ripe strawberry and terracotta character. Tannins spread across the palate in a chunky way like thick velvet. Juicy and thick at the end." James Suckling
"The 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is a heady, explosive wine. I don't think I have ever tasted an Ovello from the Produttori with this much heft. The strong mineral and saline accents typical of this site are present, but they are matched pound for pound by notable mid-palate richness and intensity in its fruit. The 2017 is a brooding powerhouse that needs time to unwind." Vinous
"Taut and sinewy, boasting cherry, black currant, grass, iron and tar notes. Powerful tannins drive the finish, which is compact for now. In the end, this is lightly astringent, but has plenty of drive and should find equilibrium with time." Wine Spectator
"One of the bigger production in the Produttori del Barbaresco's portfolio is the 2017 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello. All of the Riservas in this vintage are characterized by especially exuberant and bold aromas, and this bottle is a prime example. Cassis, wild cherry, tobacco, rusty nail and licorice build intensity. The wine is tapered and silky in texture, but it also offers a good amount of power to carry it through the aging process." First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.
The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.
The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.
The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.
A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
