    • Barbaresco DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

Typical Barbaresco: bright ruby red, fine bouquet of berries, undergrowth and coffee. On the palate it is powerful with fine, yet noticeable tannin, soft middle structure with a full-bodied substance and a long, fruity finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Fragrant and full cherry nose with a layer of spice underneath and hints of iron. Medium weight and elegant, if with quite a bit of demanding, bitter-sweet tannins. Long and focused but still a little unsettled for the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Pretty aromas of perfumed berry, fragrant blue flowers and vineyard dust shape the nose. The vibrant, linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and a hint of white pepper alongside bright acidity and taut but refined tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Ripe fruit aromas of summer cherry and plum rise from the bouquet of the 2016 Barbaresco. This is an easygoing expression of Nebbiolo that plays its winning cards with an expert hand-especially in this balanced vintage. You get lots of small-fruit detailing with spice, leather and tar at the back. Dusty notes of crushed mineral appear on the finish." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

In a deep, vivid ruby to garnet red, Barbaresco shows itself with the extensive bouquet of red fruits and pastries and a mineral touch. On the palate it convinces with a rich, solid structure and a continuous development, which ends in a long, fragrant final. Every year, the leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy shows what they and their members are capable of with their basic Barbaresco. Complimenti! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Youthful looking mid ruby. Iron, oats and lifted sweet, rich fruit. Bags of ripe cherry on the palate but nothing out of kilter or overdone. Tannic layer under generous sweet-sour cherry fruit. Embryonic and with plenty of stuffing." Jancis Robinson

"Produttori's 2016 Barbaresco is delicious now and is only going to get better. It's a deliciously fresh wine, its structure tucked away behind clean acidity and earthy layers of dark, ripe fruit. This is a sculpted wine, with fine, powdery tannins that are currently a bit drying on the finish but should resolve." Decanter

"Cherry, tar and menthol flavors mark this rich, silky red. Even more expansive on the palate, building to a long, complex aftertaste. Beautifully balanced, this picks up a minerally accent on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can't remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol licorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine!" Vinous

"Enticing aromas of violet, woodland berry, loose vineyard soil, wild mint and a hint of spearmint shape the intensely fragrant nose. The tense, young palate is still nervous but already boasts finesse, showing wild raspberry, crunchy red cherry, white pepper and star anise. Firm, refined tannins and racy acidity give it a linear, almost austere elegance, while bright acidity keeps it focused and balanced." (Cellar Selection) Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco "Nubiola" DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco “Nubiola” DOCG 2016

Sparkling ruby. Expressive, very fragrant bouquet of red stone fruit, mint and leather. Juicy, clear approach with smooth tannins. Wonderfully long finish with ripe berries and spices. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby with slight garnet edge. Appealing nose with fine notes of raspberry, plum and pomegranate. On the palate it shows handy tannin, a lot of sweet melt, in the final then clear wood notes." Falstaff

"Tasted blind. Dark and almost impenetrable ruby – oak? Oh, yes: sweetly oaked, deep, crushed dark-fruit nose. Lots of luscious, sweet oak, while the succulent fruit has already begun to integrate. Gripping yet ripe tannins. It is a lot of oak and although the fruit handles it more than well, I wonder if this will limit its ageing capacity. Right now it is super-hedonistic while the gripping structure truly adds pizzazz." Jancis Robinson

"The charming and dynamic Giorgio Pelissero produces this wine from six small sites throughout the Barbaresco region. It's aged mostly in large casks but also in some older barriques. The nose is lush and smoky, with very ripe cherry aromas. Suave and broad, it shows ample flesh and ripe tannins. It's a touch extracted and not very nuanced but it packs a punch and has good weight and length." Decanter

"Marked by spicy oak, this red is rich and laced with cherry, plum, menthol and tobacco flavors. Balanced and densely structured, showing length on the gripping finish." Wine Spectator

    • Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

Medium deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Complex and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by a fine-grained tannin. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby with orange tinges. Closed and not showing much on the nose except for faint, sweet hints. Youthful and tightly built palate but with plenty of fruit on the finish. Gripping tannins that then melt on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Underbrush, balsamic notes, new leather and rose aromas lead the nose. Tight and assertive, the linear, full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, licorice and espresso framed in firm acidity and youthfully austere, close-grained tannins that leave a tight, rather austere finish. Give this time to fully unwind and open up." Wine Enthusiast

"The Fontanabianca 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a very soft and accessible expression of Nebbiolo that shows some ripe fruit softness with bold cherry notes followed by spice, tobacco and tar. The wine delivers a very tightly knit texture, yet it is surprisingly forthcoming and generous at the same time. It's another great Barbaresco for grilled meats." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco Montestefano Riserva DOCG 2015

Montestefano Riserva 2015 is exquisite and harmonious from start to finish. Among the 2015s of the Produttori, it is the one that best hides its tannins, as the fruit is intensely fragrant, rich and seductive. For us it is a synthesis of Montefico, Ovello and Rabajà. Today, Montestefano gives the sensation of being relatively accessible, but it will almost certainly go through a few closing phases until it opens up completely. On the nose it surprises us with an almost endless complexity and depth. Its silky, polished tannins give an impression of sensual elegance. Crushed meadow flowers, mint, liquorice and dark red cherries are just some of the notes that envelop the deep, long finish. Fabulous! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano rounds out this series of wines from Produttori del Barbaresco. Ample and resonant on the palate, the Montestefano shows all the natural breadth that is so typical of this site. On the palate, the Montestefano is rich and explosive, with tremendous depth and fabulous overall balance. Dark cherry, plum, espresso, licorice and spice build into the dark, sumptuous finish." Vinous

"Balsamic aromas of camphor mingle with mature dark-skinned berry, leather, licorice and vanilla on this structured red. The full-bodied palate reflects the nose, delivering raspberry compote, star anise, crushed mint and hazelnut alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink after 2023." Wine Enthusiast

"This small cooperative goes from strength to strength under the dynamic management of Aldo Vacca. Montestefano is one of the top sites in the commune of Barbaresco. The nose is still reserved, but there are rich red fruits lurking. Very concentrated on the palate, this is lush and approachable, although one senses there is much in reserve, with excellent ageing potential. It's taut and imposing, with a finish that's tangy and persistent." Decanter

Barbaresco Rio Sordo Riserva DOCG 2015

Rio Sordo Riserva is particularly dense, rich and balanced. In the bouquet roses, spices and raspberries. On the palate it is very complex and of wonderful depth. The floral notes right up to the final make this feminine Barbaresco Riserva irresistible even at a young age. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo comes across as quite powerful and dense today. A few months ago it was more refined, but today I get the impression of a wine that is growing in bottle. As always, the Rio Sordo is a Barbaresco of textural suaveness and early appeal, relative to the more structured wines in this range. Spice, new leather, tobacco and cedar meld into the supple, resonant finish." Vinous

"Dark-skinned berry, camphor, rose and crushed stone aromas shape the nose along with a whiff of pipe tobacco. The aromas carry on to the structured, full-bodied palate along with juicy Marasca cherry and licorice. Firm, fine-grained tannins provide support." Wine Enthusiast

      Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2015

Pora overwhelms with incredible complexity and a variety of aromas ranging from stone fruit, raspberries and liquorice to dried flowers, spices and white truffles. On the palate, the Pora offers nobility and a certain seriousness before opening with bite and juiciness and ending with a velvety wide finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is just as radiant and seductive as it was a few months ago. Plush and sumptuous in the glass, the 2015 Pora captures all of the natural intensity of the year. Even with all of its lush fruit, the Pora has plenty of structural underpinnings beneath. Succulent dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol and licorice notes flesh out in this forward, wonderfully inviting Riserva from the Produttori. In 2015, the Pora is a real overachiever. Best of all, it should drink well with minimal cellaring." Vinous

"Underbrush, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. On the firm, structured palate, tightly knit but noble tannins offset dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, orange zest and star anise. Tense and youthfully austere, it needs a few years to unwind." • Barbaresco Asili Riserva DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco Asili Riserva DOCG 2015

There is a successful separation of powers between extract, tannin and alcohol. The spicy fruit aroma with seductive leather and tobacco notes and the power and elegance of the taste guarantee a splendid bite and high pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Asili shows a bit more aromatic lift and freshness than it did a few months ago, which is a very good sign for its future. Sweet spice and floral notes play off a core of sweet red Asili fruit. Medium in body, silky and inviting, the Asili is another highlight in this range. Like all of these wines, it shows the riper fruit and softer contours of a warm year." Vinous

"Wild berry, violet, new leather, forest floor and eucalyptus aromas lift out of the glass. The elegant, full-bodied palate delivers dried black cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and dried mint alongside taut, polished tannins. Barbaresco

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.

The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.

The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.

The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.

A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
