Barbaresco “La Casa in Collina” DOCG 2016

Terre da Vino's colourful Barbaresco La Casa in Collina smells of withered flowers, sour cherries and tobacco. Highly balanced taste with excellent persistence. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Spice and stalks on the nose with ripe fruit shimmering underneath. Stalky, firm tannins and marasca cherry fruit. Plenty of substance but a little tough at the moment and with a slightly drying finish." Jancis Robinson

"A more floral, fresher Barbaresco that shows bright blueberries, fresh herbs and fruit tea. Medium-bodied and fruity with a lithe backbone of tannins and a soft finish." James Suckling

Bright ruby red with orange reflections. Fine bouquet of violets, forest soil and a balsamic camphor note. On the palate marasca cherry, some raspberry, liquorice and a mint note. Fresh acidity and the right amount of tannins round off the pleasant finale. SUPERIORE.DE

"Concentrated mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Alluring nose of raspberry and cherry with hints of exotic spice and leather. Juicy cherry-fruit palate marked by quite a bit of drying tannins. Huge length, though." Jancis Robinson

"A fresh and lively Barbaresco with citrus, wet earth, cedar and strawberries. Medium body, firm tannins and a tangy finish." James Suckling

"The 2015 Barbaresco (with 18,000 bottles made) shows perfumes of wild rose and lavender potpourri. This is an elegant wine that is laced with a delicate embroidery of wild berry, forest floor, balsam herb and autumnal or earthy aromas. It shows a lean, mid-weight approach with lots of firmness and freshness to encourage medium-term cellar aging." Robert Parker

"Tasted blind. Dark, deep ruby, concentrated, yet not without finesse and with hints of chalk on the nose. Ripe fruit bordering on the rich, but reined in by lively juicy acidity and a layer of grainy tannins. Intense and long and a little vibrant with bags of chewy tannins." Jancis Robinson

"Fontanabianca presents a rich and full-bodied expression of Nebbiolo here in this classic vintage. The 2016 Barbaresco is enhanced with black fruit, spice, leather and tar, all rolled into one harmonious wine. There is beautiful texture here, with balanced and silky intensity to the end." In a deep, lively ruby to garnet red the Barbaresco shows itself with the extensive Bouquet of red fruits and pastries and a mineral touch. Every year, the leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy shows with its basic Barbaresco what it and its members are capable of. Complimenti! SUPERIORE.DE

"Barbaresco. Tasted blind. Concentrated ruby. Lots of concentrated, sweet cherry fruit and grainy tannins and plenty of acidity, too. Generous, tannic and long with youthful vigour but can be approached now. Good ageing potential." Jancis Robinson

"Rose petal, dark spice and camphor aromas slowly take shape in the glass along with a whiff of tar. Juicy and delicious, the smooth full-bodied palate has a weightless elegance, delivering succulent Marasca cherry, ripe raspberry, licorice and tobacco while fine-grained tannins provide support." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2015 vintage opens to a visibly darker color and thicker concentration compared to recent past vintages. Next to the upcoming 2016 and 2017 editions, we can expect 2015 to be the most fruit-forward of the three. You get dark tones of plum and blackberry with dry tannins at the rear." Robert Parker

"Charming aromas of cherry, strawberry and rose are inviting in this red, with flavors to match, showing ripeness and focus. Earth and mineral elements chime in as this firms up, but the harmony is there and this should really sing in about five years." Wine Spectator

    • Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2015

Cognos Barbaresco from the top vineyard Bordini is a centred and firm Nebbiolo, which is rather one of the stronger representatives of the appellation. However, it only reveals its great aromatic potential at second glance: Cherry, blackberry, hints of spices and a little freshly chopped mint. Then some speculoos, walnuts, salty tones and tobacco. Acidity and tannin form a perfect symbiosis and at the same time the backbone of this impressive Barbaresco, which will be a pleasure for many years. SUPERIORE.DE

"A top note of mint augments the cherry, strawberry, eucalyptus and tar flavors in this austere red. Assertive tannins gird the finish, yet this remains long and finds equilibrium in the end." Wine Spectator

"Aromas of cherries, cream and roses follow through to a medium body with beautifully depth of fruit and a long, fine tannin structure. Hard to not drink now. Better in 2020, but it’s already beautiful." James Suckling

"Although Cogno are better known for their Barolos, they also produce a Barbaresco from 1ha in Neive. The nose is still muted, with discreet raspberry aromas. The palate is fresh, vibrant and concentrated, showing zest as well as weight. There's plenty of energy and drive here, followed by a long, forceful finish." Decanter

"Compelling aromas of fragrant blue flower, red berry, crushed herb, new leather and tilled earth shape the nose. On the savory, full-bodied palate, taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity frame flavors of ripe Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and tobacco. It's young but already boasts a fantastic combination of elegance and structure." Wine Enthusiast

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

In a deep, lively ruby to garnet red the Barbaresco shows itself with the extensive Bouquet of red fruits and pastries and a mineral touch. Its taste is convincing due to its rich, solid structure and continuous development, which ends in a long-winded, fragrant final. The leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy already shows every year with its basic Barbaresco what it and its members are capable of. Complimenti! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Youthful looking mid ruby. Iron, oats and lifted sweet, rich fruit. Bags of ripe cherry on the palate but nothing out of kilter or overdone. Tannic layer under generous sweet-sour cherry fruit. Embryonic and with plenty of stuffing." Jancis Robinson

"Cherry, tar and menthol flavors mark this rich, silky red. Even more expansive on the palate, building to a long, complex aftertaste. Beautifully balanced, this picks up a minerally accent on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Barbaresco is a stunning wine with tremendous richness for this bottling. Ample, deep and powerful, the 2016 exudes pedigree and class from start to finish. I can't remember a straight Barbaresco here with this much fruit density and unctuous richness, and yet there is more than enough tannin and overall structure to give the wine its classically leaning feel. A blast of sweet red cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol licorice and smoke hits the potent finish. What a wine!" Vinous

"Enticing aromas of violet, woodland berry, loose vineyard soil, wild mint and a hint of spearmint shape the intensely fragrant nose. The tense, young palate is still nervous but already boasts finesse, showing wild raspberry, crunchy red cherry, white pepper and star anise. Firm, refined tannins and racy acidity give it a linear, almost austere elegance, while bright acidity keeps it focused and balanced." (Cellar Selection) Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Barbaresco is a tight and beautiful wine that will require more time to unwind and soften. This beautifully balanced vintage is characterized by a tight inner core of fruit that underlines the graceful aging capacity of these wines. The 2016 is shaping up to be one destined for long cellar aging. Now in its youth, the wine offers wild berry, rose and licorice aromas." Robert Parker

"This is the estate's top-shelf expression. The 2014 Barbaresco Bordini is a subtle and silky expression that ushers forth a pretty stream of authentic Nebbiolo characteristics. You get red currant, dried berry, campfire ash, tar, licorice and subtle whiffs of white truffle. Barbaresco “Bordini” DOCG 2016

The bouquet shows dark fruits, nuanced with spices, tar, liquorice and wild berries. The mouthfeel is soft and supple with a lasting and silky texture. Here comes a Nebbiolo that radiates character and personality. Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a precise interpretation of the grape that easily draws a fine line between elegance and power. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid to deep ruby. Exotic, lifted nose with raspberry and passion fruit. Super-bright raspberry palate with bags of sweet, coating (oak?) tannins. Very unusual yet succulent and intriguing. This probably just needs more time in the bottle." Jancis Robinson

"This Barbaresco is of a thicker and darker concentration than the others within this set of new releases, with ripe cherry fruit and dark berries that lift immediately from the glass. But the 2016 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is thinner and less consequential in the mouth than I had expected from the appearance. This is a very linear and streamlined approach that could accompany a tenderloin carpaccio with arugula, shaved Parmesan and extra virgin olive oil." Robert Parker

    Things to know about
    Barbaresco

    Barbaresco

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.

The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.

The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.

The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.

A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
