Barbaresco “La Casa in Collina” DOCG 2017

Terre da Vino's colourful Barbaresco La Casa in Collina smells interestingly of wilted flowers, sour cherries and tobacco. Highly balanced taste with its excellent persistence. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby. Tomato paste, raspberry, a hint of dried rose petal on the nose, cranberry on the finish. On the palate with clear fruit, juicy course, light salt and medium weight." Falstaff

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

Typical Barbaresco: bright ruby red, fine bouquet of berries, undergrowth and coffee. On the palate it is powerful with fine, yet noticeable tannin, soft middle structure with a full-bodied substance and a long, fruity finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Fragrant and full cherry nose with a layer of spice underneath and hints of iron. Medium weight and elegant, if with quite a bit of demanding, bitter-sweet tannins. Long and focused but still a little unsettled for the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Pretty aromas of perfumed berry, fragrant blue flowers and vineyard dust shape the nose. The vibrant, linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and a hint of white pepper alongside bright acidity and taut but refined tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Ripe fruit aromas of summer cherry and plum rise from the bouquet of the 2016 Barbaresco. This is an easygoing expression of Nebbiolo that plays its winning cards with an expert hand-especially in this balanced vintage. You get lots of small-fruit detailing with spice, leather and tar at the back. Dusty notes of crushed mineral appear on the finish." Robert Parker

Bright ruby red with orange reflections. Fine bouquet of violets, forest floor and a balsamic camphor note. On the palate Marasca cherry, some raspberry, liquorice and a mint note. Fresh acidity and the right amount of elegant tannins round off the lively and long final. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2017

      Barbaresco DOCG 2017

In a deep, vivid ruby to garnet red, Barbaresco shows itself with the extensive bouquet of red fruits and pastries and a mineral touch. On the palate it convinces with a rich, solid structure and a continuous development, which ends in a long, fragrant final. Every year, the leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy shows what they and their members are capable of with their basic Barbaresco. Complimenti! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Lifted sour-cherry and raspberry nose. Elegant raspberry fruit palate which has a medium-weight feel to it and coating tannins. Long and still youthful. Promising." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!" Vinous

    • Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

Cognos Barbaresco from the top Bordini vineyard is a centred and firm Nebbiolo, which is rather one of the more powerful representatives of the appellation. However, it reveals its great aroma potential only at second glance: Cherry, blackberry, hints of spices and a little freshly chopped mint. Then some Spekulatius, walnut, salty tones and tobacco. Acidity and tannin form a perfect symbiosis and at the same time the backbone of this impressive Barbaresco, which will give pleasure for many years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Even at a relatively spritely age, the 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is showing some carefully evolved notes and a subdued style. The wine feels well contoured and shaped with softened layers of bramble and wild berry. There is bright elegance and grace here. Pair it with some mild goat or sheep milk cheeses, such as robiola." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a classy, polished wine. This is an especially gracious wine from Bordini, where the Barbarescos are often bigger. Sweet spice, tobacco, menthol, licorice and cloves add lovely shades of nuance. Dark in its expression and also tightly wound, the 2016 is very nicely done." Vinous

"Rose, cherry and licorice aromas and flavors are accented by leather, tobacco and spice in this focused and complex red. Balanced, but the dusty tannins will need a year or two to integrate." Wine Spectator

"A ripe but balanced and very impressive Barbaresco. The first indications of this are the intense strawberry essence, leather, dried red plums and pretty, lifted orange rind. Beautifully mouth-filling and complex in the palate, drawing together strands of ripe tannin and flavorful fruit. Powerful on the robust but well articulated finish." James Suckling

"Camphor, dark spice, wild herbs and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. On the focused palate, bright acidity and taut, refined tannins accompany crushed raspberry, juicy Marasca cherry and star anise. Mint and orange zest notes give depth to the finish." Wine Enthusiast

      Barbaresco “Nubiola” DOCG 2016

Sparkling ruby. Expressive, very fragrant bouquet of red stone fruit, wild berries, mint and leather. Juicy, clear approach with well-proportioned tannins. Wonderfully long finish with ripe berries and spices. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby with a light garnet rim. Appealing nose with fine notes of raspberry, plum and pomegranate. Shows grippy tannin on the palate, lots of sweet melting, then distinct wood notes in the final." Falstaff

"Tasted blind. Dark and almost impenetrable ruby - oak? Oh, yes: sweetly oaked, deep, crushed dark-fruit nose. Lots of luscious, sweet oak, while the succulent fruit has already begun to integrate. Gripping yet ripe tannins. It is a lot of oak and although the fruit handles it more than well, I wonder if this will limit its ageing capacity. Right now it is super-hedonistic while the gripping structure truly adds pizzazz." Jancis Robinson

"The charming and dynamic Giorgio Pelissero produces this wine from six small sites throughout the Barbaresco region. It's aged mostly in large casks but also in some older barriques. The nose is lush and smoky, with very ripe cherry aromas. Suave and broad, it shows ample flesh and ripe tannins. It's a touch extracted and not very nuanced but it packs a punch and has good weight and length." Decanter

"Marked by spicy oak, this red is rich and laced with cherry, plum, menthol and tobacco flavors. Balanced and densely structured, showing length on the gripping finish." Wine Spectator

      Barbaresco “Spezie” Riserva DOCG 2012

The Nebbiolo grapes for this archetypal Barbaresco come from marl soils at about 250 m above sea level. After two years of aging in large wood and another 6-7 (!) years of bottle aging, here comes a wine on the market that, with its perfectly ripened tannins and fine sweet melting, already gives a lot of pleasure even to the impatient Nebbiolo fan.

Ruby red with garnet reflections, convincing, spicy bouquet of violets, moss, rose petals and small red fruits. At the palate beautiful pressure, thereby open-hearted, fresh and full-bodied, with well-dosed extract-sweet notes of maraschino cherry and a beautiful fruit, which promises a further great future in connection with the fine-meshed tannin. SUPERIORE.DE

"Still an elegant, fresh Barbaresco with strawberry, tar and hazelnut aromas and flavors, in a subtle, polished package. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. This is showing really well and drinking beautiful. Racy. Really well done, especially for the vintage." James Suckling

    • Barbaresco "Spezie" Riserva DOCG 2010

      Barbaresco “Spezie” Riserva DOCG 2010

The Nebbiolo grapes for this archetypal Barbaresco from the dream year 2010 come from marl soils at an altitude of about 250 metres. After two years of maturation in large wood and another 8 (!) years in the bottle, 10 years after the harvest, a wine comes here on the market which, with its perfectly matured tannins and fine sweet melt, already gives much pleasure even to the impatient Nebbiolo fan.

Ruby red with garnet reflections, convincing, spicy bouquet of violets, moss, rose petals and small red fruits. On the palate beautiful pressure, yet open-hearted, fresh and full-bodied, with well-dosed extract sweet notes of maraschino cherry and a beautiful fruit, which in combination with the fine-meshed tannin promises another great future. SUPERIORE.DE

"This Barbaresco, just like the Barolo, follows the traditional style of long maceration and ageing in large wooden barrels (two years), followed by over eight years of bottle ageing before being released. At the moment the Barbaresco Riserva is almost more delicate than the Barolo. Perhaps this is because a Barbaresco is generally not quite as strongly structured as a Barolo and therefore matures a little faster. This Barbaresco is also powerful on the palate and has the same fire as the Barolo, but is a bit lighter and more transparent in colour. It exudes the scent of violets and wild strawberries, a touch of clove spice, glides silky over the palate and develops a delicate Mon Cheri sweetness". Dr. Jens Priewe (weinkenner.de)

"Dark plums, cherry liqueur and lots of cinnamon and spices, but also a fresher, herbal thread with heather and bracken. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, which frames layers of plush red fruit against very muscular tannins. Long and very chewy on the finish. This flavorful, old release still needs time." James Suckling

"Once in a while fate (or a far-sighted proprietor) delivers a wine to our judges in mature style, so that we can suddenly appreciate in the glass before us all of those qualities which normally we only sketch out in excited anticipation. So it is with this richly constituted Barbaresco Riserva from the very fine 2010 vintage. It's still dark and sombre in colour, though its hues are now beginning to brick a little. The aromas are resonant, expansive, lusciously ripe and now melting down into an almost truffley harmony. On the palate, meanwhile, the wine remains sturdily built and lushly fruited, but yet again time has brought an inner softness; all the flavoury threads are now gathered and woven together. No need to hurry, either, but if you want the pleasures of age, find them here." Decanter

Medium deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Complex and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by a fine-grained tannin. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby with orange tinges. Closed and not showing much on the nose except for faint, sweet hints. Youthful and tightly built palate but with plenty of fruit on the finish. Gripping tannins that then melt on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Underbrush, balsamic notes, new leather and rose aromas lead the nose. Tight and assertive, the linear, full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, licorice and espresso framed in firm acidity and youthfully austere, close-grained tannins that leave a tight, rather austere finish. Give this time to fully unwind and open up." Wine Enthusiast

"The Fontanabianca 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a very soft and accessible expression of Nebbiolo that shows some ripe fruit softness with bold cherry notes followed by spice, tobacco and tar. The results here are tightly knit and firm, with lifted aromas of forest fruit, iron ore, cola and balsam herb. The tannins show some dryness, probably a consequence of the hot vintage, but the wine offers plenty of extra fruit padding and cushioning in order to hit the right balance. The final results are yielding and pliable." Robert Parker

"A firm, fresh red with raspberry, lemon-peel and light cedar undertones. It’s medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are long and very intense. Just a baby. Give it time to come around. Better after 2022." James Suckling

    • Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2015

Pora overwhelms with incredible complexity and a variety of aromas ranging from stone fruit, raspberries and liquorice to dried flowers, spices and white truffles. On the palate, the Pora offers noblesse and a certain seriousness before opening with bite and juiciness and ending with a velvety wide finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is just as radiant and seductive as it was a few months ago. Plush and sumptuous in the glass, the 2015 Pora captures all of the natural intensity of the year. Even with all of its lush fruit, the Pora has plenty of structural underpinnings beneath. Succulent dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol and licorice notes flesh out in this forward, wonderfully inviting Riserva from the Produttori. In 2015, the Pora is a real overachiever. Best of all, it should drink well with minimal cellaring." Vinous

"Following the suggestion of Produttori del Barbaresco General Manager Renato Vacca, I am starting off this series of nine Riservas with the 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora. This wine is usually the most delicate, slender and ephemeral of this set. However, I can immediately confirm that this is not necessarily the case with this exuberant 2015 vintage. The sunny heat of the growing season has successfully drawn out more fruit weight and intensity in this edition of Pora. The wine overdelivers in terms of aromas, but its streamlined and polished personality follows through to the palate. Those divergent intensity levels will smooth out with more bottle age." Robert Parker

"Underbrush, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. On the firm, structured palate, tightly knit but noble tannins offset dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, orange zest and star anise. Tense and youthfully austere, it needs a few years to unwind." • Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco Pora Riserva DOCG 2014

Pora overwhelms with incredible complexity and a variety of aromas ranging from raspberries and liquorice to dried flowers, spices and white truffles. On the palate, Pora Noblesse offers a certain noblesse and seriousness before it opens with bite and juiciness and ends velvety wide. SUPERIORE.DE

"Promising scent of stone fruit, leather and tobacco; juicy in the mouth, the acidity perceptible, the tannin well integrated, racy and powerful, yet rich in finesse. To saddle of venison." Vinum

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Sweet, peppery raspberry nose with hints of strawberry jam. Clean-cut raspberry palate with plenty of acidity, but the fragrant fruit follows through. Fine layer of sandy tannins that become more prominent on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul." Robert Parker

"Although Pora is a relatively low-elevation site and can produce broad wines, Produttori's growers own almost half the cru, so they can select the best grapes for this Riserva. It's beautifully perfumed, with pure raspberry fruit. The palate is streamlined and poised, with a sleek texture and a remarkable purity of flavour, yet it doesn't lack structure and its fine acidity gives it drive and persistence." Decanter

"Round and supple, exuding cherry, berry, licorice, eucalyptus and tar flavors. Harmonious and well-built, with a long aftertaste of menthol." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can't remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won't be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests." Antonio Galloni

    • Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco Muncagota Riserva DOCG 2014

Muncagota, with a complex scent of cherries and raspberries, smoke, tobacco and spices, offers a remarkable fullness, sweetness and length to the palate from a young age. A well-structured, classic Barbaresco, which already gives us pleasure today and certainly for many years to come. Undoubtedly also its first-class price-performance ratio. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby and the most youthful looking of all the 2014 Riserva crus. Cool raspberry nose that is slow to open up. Intense yet not sweet raspberry palate that is fresh and concentrated and with a firm structure. Very complete, but needs time. A little vibrant and mouth-watering on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Lean and taut, this reveals mint, menthol, licorice, orange peel and subtle cherry flavors, all underscored by assertive tannins and lively acidity. An austere style, this will need time to come around." Wine Spectator

"The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is another of the overachievers in this range. White pepper, bright red cherry, floral notes and mint cut through the fruit in this beautifully vivid, crystalline Barbaresco. There is a level of energy, drive and overall nuance in the 2014 I don't recall having seen in the past. The 2014 is a terrific Muncagota." Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is beautifully polished and bright, with dark berry fruit, ripe cherry, crushed stone and pressed flowers. The wine is compact and firm, and you feel the tannins and power in the mouth. The Muncagota remains slightly more closed in terms of the bouquet, but this will open up with some time." • Barbaresco DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco DOCG 2015

Pios Barbaresco 2015 is a beautiful wine. Bright and radiant, with a lot of Nebbiolo character, it is a successful interpretation of the balanced vintage. In the bouquet sweet red cherries, tobacco, mint, aniseed and white pepper. On the palate medium heavy and graceful with a good balance of perfume, acidity and structure. With further bottle ripeness he is looking forward to a great development. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, brilliant ruby red with a delicate brightening rim. Floreal fragrant nose of young pink roses, strawberries and fresh mint. Smooth and fine on the palate, extremely elegant, with a beautiful dress, finest tannin with delicate pressure, balanced, slightly salty final." Falstaff

"The Pio Cesare 2015 Barbaresco offers a mid-weight approach and a solid core of fruit. That dark fruit center is surrounded by supple but delicate tones of exotic spice, smoke, tar, licorice and crushed stone. This is a fragrant and elegant expression that drinks beautifully straight out of the gate. This is a classic Barbaresco with an easy and approachable personality." Robert Parker

"A dense and layered red with plums, dried orange and lemon peel and a long and flavorful finish. Beautiful. Such impressive layers and a fantastic finish. Very exciting. Love the length. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful." James Suckling

Medium-bodied and graceful on the palate with a good balance of perfume, acidity and structure. With further bottle age it looks forward to a great evolution. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, brightening ruby garnet. Opens on the nose with notes of pomegranate and roses, some pickled cherry, plus truffle. Shows fine-meshed, quite grippy tannin on the palate, deep structure, builds in layers, final long with firm pressure, has bite." Falstaff

"The Pio Cesare 2016 Barbaresco offers a subtle approach to Nebbiolo with a silky and graceful presence. The bouquet shows a nice and fanciful embroidery of wild berries, blue flowers and white licorice. Yes, these are the standard Nebbiolo traits, and this classic wine strives to deliver nothing more and nothing less than varietal purity. Any signs of the oak have been neatly folded into the delicate fiber of this Barbaresco. The wine represents a blend of fruit from Cascina Il Bricco, San Stefanetto, Bongiovanni and Rocche di Massalupo." Robert Parker

"Yum. Very fine tannins with a dusty texture. Plenty of subtle ripe strawberries, orange peel and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with a fresh, fruity finish. Tight and beautiful. Give it a year or two to open, but already a beauty." James Suckling

"Pio Cesare’s 2016 Barbaresco is, quite simply, everything Barbaresco should be. Medium in body and translucent, with a firm backbone of youthful Nebbiolo tannin, the 2016 is captivating from the very first taste. Rose petal, lavender, mint, blood orange and red berry fruit open effortlessly. This is textbook Barbaresco. I loved it." Vinous

    • Barbaresco "Vanotu" DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco “Vanotu” DOCG 2016

Vanotu is the top plant of Pelissero and every year very convincing. Attractive garnet red, concentrated, hearty bouquet with fine tobacco and leather notes. Generous also on the palate, with overripe sour cherries and with densely woven tannins. A spectacular and masculine wine with great storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense bright ruby red with fine garnet edge. Very present and dense nose, shows a lot of intense fruit, after blackberry, dark cherry and plum, in the background after truffle. Dense and powerful at the base, spreads well, in the rear the wood is clearly visible, drying tannin." Falstaff

"The flagship 2016 Barbaresco Vanotu is dense, plush and explosive. Black cherry, chocolate, licorice, spice, leather, menthol and dried flowers all run through this rich, sumptuous Barbaresco. Even with all of its obvious richness and muscle, the 2016 retains a good bit of freshness. Readers need to give the 2016 time to settle down post bottling." Vinous

"A supple, elegant style, this offers cherry, floral, iron, tar, toasty and spice aromas and flavors. Fleshy midpalate, this stands up to the tannins that emerge on the finish. Best from 2023 through 2042." Wine Spectator

      Barbaresco “Fausoni” DOCG 2015

Translucent purple with a fresh, garnet red edge. The bouquet is a potpourri of dried fruits, dark chocolate and a delicate nougat note. Opened on the palate, it is fruity and velvety and with its straight lines and wonderfully integrated acidity it will be a pleasure for many years to come. SUPERIORE.DE

"Broad-shouldered, with cherry, loam and licorice notes, this red boasts well-appointed tannins and bright acidity. Complex and chewy on the long finish." Wine Spectator

"Showing elegance and grace starting with the first sip, the 2015 Barbaresco Fausoni also reveals power and integration. You get both sides of the spectrum with this wine: silk and muscle. The bouquet emits aromas of pressed blue flower, rose hip, dried red currant, spice and fine licorice. The finish is compact and long in persistence." Robert Parker

"Deep, plum and floral nose, then a ripe and generous palate with considerable tannic power, but also very good balance. The dry, quite minerally finish is long and intense." James Suckling

"Just bottled, the 2015 Barbaresco Fausoni possesses a level of volume and intensity to a degree I have not seen in this wine before. Sweet, perfumed and super-inviting, the 2015 is going to be nearly impossible to resist in its youth. Virtually seamless in the glass, but with considerable supporting structure, the 2015 captures all the sexiness of the year. The interplay between the radiance of the vintage and the more energetic, vibrant qualities that are typical of this site is compelling. Hard candy, rose petal, orange zest, mint and spice infuse the creamy, resonant finish." Antonio Galloni

      Barbaresco “Cottá" DOCG 2015

Bright garnet red with copper edge. Fine cinema smell of red fruits and sea buckthorn. In addition forest soil paired with a breath of tobacco and bitter almond. In the glass then still young, at first loud tannins, with some air then softer tones and a powerful, lasting finale. An elegant, aristocratic wine that leaves a lasting impression not only at the first glass. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Maturing mid ruby with narrow bricky rim. Cloves, cinnamon bark and cherry palate with lots of coating tannins. Great balance, length and concentration. Hedonistic but needs more time." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barbaresco Cottá comes across as a bit heavy, which is something that can happen in warmer vintages, where the natural heft of this site is amplified. There is no shortage of intensity and power, but the Cottà feels blowsy today. On the more positive side, the 2015 does offer a good bit of freshness. It will be interesting to see where things ultimately shake out here." Antonio Galloni

"Very attractive red-cherry, redcurrant, plum and floral nose with discreet oak, then a sleek yet powerful and tannic palate with a lot of structure and some real elegance. Enough fruit for immediate drinking, but this is made for aging." James Suckling

"From a celebrated cru in Neive, the 2015 Barbaresco Cottá is a shapely, soft and accessible interpretation of Nebbiolo from a warm vintage. This mid-weight wine boasts a bright bouquet with ruby highlights. Those aromas are alert, tonic and straightforward in delivery. In terms of mouthfeel, this wine is firm and structured. However, the astringency is safely within bounds (for a young Nebbiolo). Some 10,000 bottles were made. Only 10% of the wine goes into new oak and the rest goes into neutral barrique." Robert Parker

"Cherry, strawberry, chicory and woodsy notes mark this solidly structured, tightly wound Barbaresco. The sweet fruit offsets the dense tannins for balance, and this stays long and vibrant." Wine Spectator

    • Barbaresco "Pajoré" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2015

Bright garnet red with copper edge. Here comes the most opulent and friendly Barbaresco of the highly impressive squad of Sottimano's individual vineyards. Lavish scent of black fruits, orange peel, rounded off with a fine nut note. Fine-grained tannin already at an early age envelops the firm structure and reinforces the highly distinctive character - and this is only the beginning: with the years of maturity, Pajoré will have convinced even the last doubter of his monumental charisma and cast a spell over him! SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby garnet with luminous core. Elegant nose of rose petals, plums and some rum pot, in the aftertaste of blackberries. Plucking and salty on the palate, balanced and harmonious from start to finish, especially in the middle very strong, ends long and fruity". Falstaff

"Tasted blind. Dark ruby with narrow bricky rim. Ripe, dark cherry that is a little ethereal but certainly complex. Full, ripe-fruit palate that is not yet as complex as the nose has it, but certainly generous and mouth-filling. Long and tactile finish with bags of grainy tannins matching the rich fruit." Jancis Robinson

"Sleek and linear, with cherry, strawberry, menthol and chalky, stony flavors fused to the muscular tannins. Finishes lean and dry, with a kernel of sweet fruit bound up in the structure. This seems to have already shut down, so forget about it for five years." Wine Spectator

"Intense aroma of cloves, but also rose and earth notes. This rather sophisticated, medium-to full-bodied Barbaresco has bold, dry tannins that are well integrated and a long, dry finish." James Suckling

"Of these various single-vintage releases by Sottimano (including Basarin, Cottá and Fausoni), the 2015 Barbaresco Pajorè is very well integrated and smooth. The tannin management shows an excellent approach, and you don't get the astringency that comes forward in the Basarin. Instead, this expression offers increased focus on the ripe, round and plump fruit of the vintage. Only 5,000 bottles (including magnums) were produced." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Barbaresco Pajoré is the most potent and brooding of the 2015s. The heft, weight and structure of Pajoré comes through in the 2015, but the flavor profile is similar to that of the other wines. Racy, silky and generous, the 2015 is very much the product of a warm, sunny growing season. The Pajoré will need at least a few years to shed some tannin, but it is very showy, even at this early stage." Antonio Galloni

    • Barbaresco "Pajoré" DOCG 2017

      Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2017

Here comes the most opulent and friendly Barbaresco of Sottimano's overall highly impressive squad of single vineyards. Bright garnet red with copper rim. Lavish scent of black fruits, orange peel, rounded off with a fine nut note. Fine-grained tannin already at a young age coats the firm structure and reinforces the well recognizable highly independent character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brightening, medium dense garnet red. Very finely marked nose with rich notes of fresh dark cherries, clear and bright, some anchovy and caper leaf behind. Gripping and grippy on the palate, opens with present, dense tannin, builds nicely, juicy on the final." Falstaff

"With fruit from Treiso, this wine is often recognized by its immediate and accessible personality, with silky tannins and delicate floral aromas. The Sottimano family farms five separate vineyard sites in the appellation. The 2017 Barbaresco Pajoré is a little more subdued in this vintage with a wide assortment of earthy, wild fruit and licorice aromas. This expression offers a lower threshold on the aromatic high points. However, the palate is more elaborate and constructed in this vintage with firm, free-standing tannins that give lift and buoyancy." Robert Parker

"Violet, new leather, truffle and spiced plum are just some of the aromas you'll find on this captivating red. Full bodied and boasting youthful tension, the linear palate delivers mature Morello cherry, spiced cranberry, star anise and tobacco framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2023–2030." Things to know aboutBarbaresco
    Barbaresco

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.

The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.

The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.

The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.

A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
