    • Barbaresco DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

Typical Barbaresco: bright ruby red, fine bouquet of berries, undergrowth and coffee. On the palate it is powerful with fine, yet noticeable tannin, soft middle structure with a full-bodied substance and a long, fruity finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Fragrant and full cherry nose with a layer of spice underneath and hints of iron. Medium weight and elegant, if with quite a bit of demanding, bitter-sweet tannins. Long and focused but still a little unsettled for the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Pretty aromas of perfumed berry, fragrant blue flowers and vineyard dust shape the nose. The vibrant, linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and a hint of white pepper alongside bright acidity and taut but refined tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Ripe fruit aromas of summer cherry and plum rise from the bouquet of the 2016 Barbaresco. This is an easygoing expression of Nebbiolo that plays its winning cards with an expert hand-especially in this balanced vintage. You get lots of small-fruit detailing with spice, leather and tar at the back. Dusty notes of crushed mineral appear on the finish." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

Cognos Barbaresco from the top Bordini vineyard is a centred and firm Nebbiolo, which is rather one of the more powerful representatives of the appellation. However, it reveals its great aroma potential only at second glance: Cherry, blackberry, hints of spices and a little freshly chopped mint. Then some Spekulatius, walnut, salty tones and tobacco. Acidity and tannin form a perfect symbiosis and at the same time the backbone of this impressive Barbaresco, which will give pleasure for many years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Even at a relatively spritely age, the 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is showing some carefully evolved notes and a subdued style. The wine feels well contoured and shaped with softened layers of bramble and wild berry. There is bright elegance and grace here. Pair it with some mild goat or sheep milk cheeses, such as robiola." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a classy, polished wine. This is an especially gracious wine from Bordini, where the Barbarescos are often bigger. Sweet spice, tobacco, menthol, licorice and cloves add lovely shades of nuance. Dark in its expression and also tightly wound, the 2016 is very nicely done." Vinous

"Rose, cherry and licorice aromas and flavors are accented by leather, tobacco and spice in this focused and complex red. Balanced, but the dusty tannins will need a year or two to integrate." Wine Spectator

"A ripe but balanced and very impressive Barbaresco. The first indications of this are the intense strawberry essence, leather, dried red plums and pretty, lifted orange rind. Beautifully mouth-filling and complex in the palate, drawing together strands of ripe tannin and flavorful fruit. Powerful on the robust but well articulated finish." James Suckling

"Camphor, dark spice, wild herbs and woodland berry aromas shape the nose. On the focused palate, bright acidity and taut, refined tannins accompany crushed raspberry, juicy Marasca cherry and star anise. Mint and orange zest notes give depth to the finish." Wine Enthusiast

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2017

      Barbaresco DOCG 2017

In a deep, vivid ruby to garnet red, Barbaresco shows itself with the extensive bouquet of red fruits and pastries and a mineral touch. On the palate it convinces with a rich, solid structure and a continuous development, which ends in a long, fragrant final. Every year, the leading winegrowers' cooperative in Italy shows what they and their members are capable of with their basic Barbaresco. Complimenti! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. Lifted sour-cherry and raspberry nose. Elegant raspberry fruit palate which has a medium-weight feel to it and coating tannins. Long and still youthful. Promising." Jancis Robinson

"The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!" Vinous

    • Barbaresco "Spezie" Riserva DOCG 2010

      Barbaresco “Spezie” Riserva DOCG 2010

The Nebbiolo grapes for this archetypal Barbaresco from the dream year 2010 come from marl soils at an altitude of about 250 metres. After two years of maturation in large wood and another 8 (!) years in the bottle, 10 years after the harvest, a wine comes here on the market which, with its perfectly matured tannins and fine sweet melt, already gives much pleasure even to the impatient Nebbiolo fan.

Ruby red with garnet reflections, convincing, spicy bouquet of violets, moss, rose petals and small red fruits. On the palate beautiful pressure, yet open-hearted, fresh and full-bodied, with well-dosed extract sweet notes of maraschino cherry and a beautiful fruit, which in combination with the fine-meshed tannin promises another great future. SUPERIORE.DE

"This Barbaresco, just like the Barolo, follows the traditional style of long maceration and ageing in large wooden barrels (two years), followed by over eight years of bottle ageing before being released. At the moment the Barbaresco Riserva is almost more delicate than the Barolo. Perhaps this is because a Barbaresco is generally not quite as strongly structured as a Barolo and therefore matures a little faster. This Barbaresco is also powerful on the palate and has the same fire as the Barolo, but is a bit lighter and more transparent in colour. It exudes the scent of violets and wild strawberries, a touch of clove spice, glides silky over the palate and develops a delicate Mon Cheri sweetness". Dr. Jens Priewe (weinkenner.de)

"Dark plums, cherry liqueur and lots of cinnamon and spices, but also a fresher, herbal thread with heather and bracken. Full-bodied and dense on the palate, which frames layers of plush red fruit against very muscular tannins. Long and very chewy on the finish. This flavorful, old release still needs time." James Suckling

"Once in a while fate (or a far-sighted proprietor) delivers a wine to our judges in mature style, so that we can suddenly appreciate in the glass before us all of those qualities which normally we only sketch out in excited anticipation. So it is with this richly constituted Barbaresco Riserva from the very fine 2010 vintage. It's still dark and sombre in colour, though its hues are now beginning to brick a little. The aromas are resonant, expansive, lusciously ripe and now melting down into an almost truffley harmony. On the palate, meanwhile, the wine remains sturdily built and lushly fruited, but yet again time has brought an inner softness; all the flavoury threads are now gathered and woven together. No need to hurry, either, but if you want the pleasures of age, find them here." Decanter

    • Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

Medium deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Complex and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruits, framed by a fine-grained tannin. Well structured, it leads into an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby with orange tinges. Closed and not showing much on the nose except for faint, sweet hints. Youthful and tightly built palate but with plenty of fruit on the finish. Gripping tannins that then melt on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Underbrush, balsamic notes, new leather and rose aromas lead the nose. Tight and assertive, the linear, full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, licorice and espresso framed in firm acidity and youthfully austere, close-grained tannins that leave a tight, rather austere finish. Give this time to fully unwind and open up." Wine Enthusiast

"The Fontanabianca 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a very soft and accessible expression of Nebbiolo that shows some ripe fruit softness with bold cherry notes followed by spice, tobacco and tar. The wine delivers a very tightly knit texture, yet it is surprisingly forthcoming and generous at the same time. It's another great Barbaresco for grilled meats." Robert Parker

"Packaged in the bottle with the black label, the Fontanabianca 2017 Barbaresco Bordini shows us a beautiful expression from Neive, one of the three principal comuni, or villages, that make up the appellation. The results here are tightly knit and firm, with lifted aromas of forest fruit, iron ore, cola and balsam herb. The tannins show some dryness, probably a consequence of the hot vintage, but the wine offers plenty of extra fruit padding and cushioning in order to hit the right balance. The final results are yielding and pliable." Robert Parker

"A firm, fresh red with raspberry, lemon-peel and light cedar undertones. It’s medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are long and very intense. Just a baby. Give it time to come around. Better after 2022." James Suckling

The bouquet shows dark fruits, nuanced with spices, tar, liquorice and wild berries. The mouthfeel is soft and supple with a lasting and silky texture. Here comes a Nebbiolo that exudes character and personality. Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a precise interpretation of the grape that easily draws a fine line between elegance and power. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is a supple, easygoing wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet raspberry fruit, crushed rose petal, sweet spice and a kick of new French oak give this mid-weight Barbaresco tons of sheer allure. In 2017, the Bordini is terrific." Vinous

"Drawing its fruit from the comune of Neive, the 2017 Barbaresco Vigneto Bordini is made from youngish vines, aged about 30 years on average. Bright, tonic and fresh, Bordini offers an accessible and approachable expression of aged Nebbiolo that could work well in a restaurant setting or for near-term consumption. The wine opens to a vibrant bouquet with cherry, licorice, tar and campfire ash. The tannins are noticeable and firm, reflecting the heat of the vintage but forging forward to shape a long and polished finish." Robert Parker

Even with all of its lush fruit, the Pora has plenty of structural underpinnings beneath. Succulent dark cherry, plum, espresso, menthol and licorice notes flesh out in this forward, wonderfully inviting Riserva from the Produttori. In 2015, the Pora is a real overachiever. Best of all, it should drink well with minimal cellaring." Vinous

"Following the suggestion of Produttori del Barbaresco General Manager Renato Vacca, I am starting off this series of nine Riservas with the 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Pora. This wine is usually the most delicate, slender and ephemeral of this set. However, I can immediately confirm that this is not necessarily the case with this exuberant 2015 vintage. The sunny heat of the growing season has successfully drawn out more fruit weight and intensity in this edition of Pora. The wine overdelivers in terms of aromas, but its streamlined and polished personality follows through to the palate. Those divergent intensity levels will smooth out with more bottle age." Robert Parker

"Underbrush, wild herb and dark-skinned-berry aromas form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. On the firm, structured palate, tightly knit but noble tannins offset dried Marasca cherry, cranberry, orange zest and star anise. Tense and youthfully austere, it needs a few years to unwind." Things to know aboutBarbaresco
    Barbaresco

First mentioned in writing in 1799, it quickly attracted the attention of international wine connoisseurs: the great garnet red Barbaresco. The vineyards of the DOCG of the same name in Piedmont - more precisely in the Langhe in the province of Cuneo - begin at the north-eastern foothills of the truffle town of Alba and extend over the territory of the three municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. It is a small, manageable cultivation area: hardly more than three million bottles are produced here every year. The Barbaresco cannot be explained without referring to the Barolo, because the latter has the longer tradition, the larger cultivation area and the somewhat stricter rules. Another special feature is that the Langhe 2014 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a land of milk and honey for connoisseurs.

The Barbaresco is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The vineyards of wine producers such as Angelo Gaja, Bruno Giacosa, Elvio Cogno, La Spinetta, Pelissero or the Produttori di Barbaresco winegrowers' cooperative are generally a little lower than those around Barolo and have slightly lighter, sandier soils which also contain more copper and zinc. The climate in the Barbaresco DOCG is somewhat warmer and drier than in the neighbouring Denomination, so that the plants reach their full maturity a little earlier.

The Nebbiolo grape is one of the greatest native grapes of Italy and is characterized by a distinctive acidity. Their shells release many tannins, which are initially hard and angular. Nevertheless, Barbaresco's long-lived wines, which are somewhat earlier to drink than Barolo's, are on average less lavish, but are generally finer, more delicate, more elegant and more supple. Most drops have more charm because they are more characterized by a soft fruit than by tannin. However, those who wanted to deduce from this that Barbaresco, often mentioned in the same breath as Barolo and Brunello, is of lesser importance would be subject to a great error, especially since some producers also produce wines in a powerful style that can stand up to the two competitors in opulence and heaviness.

The festive wine from the Langhe can be very well combined with food. Barbaresco is a very good accompaniment to strong cheeses, roasts and game dishes. The growths are traditionally aged in large old oak and chestnut barrels in which they must mature for at least one year before being bottled after at least two years - often four years - of ageing. Then the plants, which originate mainly from good years, often continue to develop in the bottle for another decade before they show all their strength, volume and elegance. The generally milder nature of Barbaresco made considerations about how to make wines drinkable earlier less compelling than in Barolo. But Barbaresco has also experimented with shorter fermentation times and shorter maturation in new oak, achieving amazing results.

A visit to Barbaresco must begin with Angelo Gaja. Italy's best-known winemaker helped the wine, which has had DOCG status since 1980, to its international breakthrough when in 1961 he decided to press his drops exclusively with his own grapes and no longer buy any fruit from other producers. After that he caused a sensation when some of his wines "downgraded" and only as Langhe put Nebbiolo in the bottle. However, this has not affected the fame and also the price development of his wines - quite the contrary. In the past 30 years, many small quality-conscious wineries have been established. The winegrowers have remained conservative to this day. Although absolute peak levels around the 700-people village of Barbaresco are reached by fewer drops than in Barolo, the best can certainly compete with the products of the neighbouring region, so that the often-heard designation "Barbaresco" is often used. "little brother of Barolo" is actually only based on the price difference that still exists. SUPERIORE.DE
