• "Sedàra" Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017

      “Sedàra” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017

Wonderful cuvée based on Nero d'Avola. Ruby red with vivid garnet reflections. In the intense fragrance hints of tobacco, spices and mineral notes. The balanced taste, characterized by red fruits, impresses on the palate with blackberry and sour notes and ends in a finale of good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark, bright ruby red. In the nose ripe cherries, plums, underlaid with fine spicy peppery tones, compact and inviting. Tight and juicy on the palate, opening on spicy elements, gripping." Falstaff

"A ripe and juicy wine with sour-cherry and berry character. Hints of almonds. Medium body. Flavorful finish." James Suckling

"Deep red. Ripe aromas of red cherry and Oriental spices. Then fresh and juicy, but with a luscious quality to the super-ripe red and black cherry flavors that turn more austere in the middle. Finishes long and suave. This smells and tastes a lot like the 2018 Sherazade, only made from riper grapes." Vinous

“Sherazade” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2018

Sherazade - beautiful protagonist from thousand and one night and wonderful Nero d'Avola. Concentrated ruby red colour, fruity, balsamic scent with mineral tones, followed by a sweet hint of cocoa. Gentle on the palate with memories of sour cherries and blackberries. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright deep red. Very perfumed and precise nose of violets, black cherry and delicate herbs. Then juicy and fresh, with outstanding sugar-acid-tannin balance on the crisp, long and lively finish. Delicious, lovely medium-bodied, very fresh red that can take a little chilling. Maybe the best Sherazade ever." Vinous

"A nero d’avola with a light, fresh edge, revealing sour cherries and raspberry cheesecake with a touch of citrus. Very taut and edgy, almost tart, on the palate, but there’s undeniable transparency and depth. Medium-bodied and medium-chewy." James Suckling

    • "Sur Sur" Grillo Sicilia DOC 2018

“Sur Sur” Grillo Sicilia DOC 2018

A spicy white wine with energetic, maritime aromas of citrus, lime and oyster shell. Focused and long on the palate. The Grillo grape is a cross between Moscato and Catarratto, which explains the variety of aromatic sweetness and mineral finesse. SUPERIORE.DE

"Some reductive notes at first, but give this some air and these move over to allow sliced pears and lemons to take center stage. Medium-to full-bodied with medium acidity and a fruity finish." James Suckling

"Loaded with fragrance, flavor and finesse, this savory white pushes all the right buttons, starting with inviting aromas of tropical fruit, citrus and white spring flowers. The fresh, medium-bodied palate doles out honeydew, Meyer lemon and Mediterranean herb alongside crisp acidity and a hint of saline." (Platz 86 - "TOP 100" 2019) Wine Enthusiast

    About the winemakers
    Donnafugata
    Sicily
    Donnafugata

The name Donnafugata - the "Woman on the run" from the famous novel "The Leopard" of the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa - Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo did not choose Rallo until the 1980s. But the wineries have belonged to the family since the 19th century. The Sicilian model enterprise has long been run by the children Antonio and José with the enthusiastic involvement of culture, charity, sustainability and environmental awareness. Their roles in the oldest winery of the Mediterranean island are clearly distributed: While Antonio is in charge of production, his sister is responsible for controlling and marketing. The next generation with Gabriella and Fernando is also ready to go. In addition to all tradition, innovation is the focus of the Donnafugata wine company. A special feature: the grapes are harvested at night. This saves energy and prevents unwanted fermentation during transport.

The brilliant entry of the Rallo family into a market still standing still in the eighties and dominated only by one single brand gave Sicily's winegrowing a groundbreaking impulse. Giacomo Rallo's decision to invest not only in the Contessa Entellina headquarters in Marsala but also in Pantelleria was almost revolutionary. But the much-praised natural sweet wines crowned the adventure on the small island with its salty and calcareous soils with great success.

The impressive, well-structured range, produced in three extremely modern winemaking facilities, of the winery located in western Sicily ranges from fine fruity white wines from indigenous and international varieties, to fruity red wines, fine sweet wines, a Spumante Brut and the red, almost entirely from the local Nero d'Avola prepared Mille e Una Notte. The Zibibbo grapes, which come from a recultivated vineyard more than one hundred years old with rare vines that are true to their roots on Pantelleria, are the raw material for the world-famous sweet wine Ben Ryè.

On the path of the heroic viticulture for some years now Donnafugata, under the guidance of Antonio, winemaker of the family and custodian of craftsmanship, has also been present with its own vineyards at Etna. Nerello Mascalese is mainly cultivated here. The first vintages of wines from the volcano captivate with elegance and finesse and mark another milestone in the history of the traditional Sicilian winery.

The decision to equip the winery with a photovoltaic system shortly after the turn of the millennium was important as. Donnafugata today covers most of its energy needs with solar power. The artistic labels for the wines often inspired by literary masterpieces are part of a convincing marketing strategy: the story telling. A universal language that recounts wine and Sicily through an extraordinarily identifying fantastic and feminine language. The idea to combine music with noble drops came from José. The trained singer, who could already be heard and seen in New York, likes to combine a song with a delicious wine of the house during her performances. SUPERIORE.DE

"One year after another, the Sicilian wine landscape produced plants with plenty of structure and alcohol. In 1983 Giacomo Rallo burst into this monotony with drops that were modern, well made and pleasant to drink, heralding a new oenological age on the island. To date, the labels have lost none of their initial elegance and accommodating nature."Gambero Rosso
