“Sul Vulcano” Bianco Etna DOC 2021
Donnafugata's impressive declaration of love for Etna, currently the hottest wine hotspot, began with the Sul Vulcano line. Carricante is one of southern Italy's most exciting grape varieties, capable of complexity and terroir-driven expression in the right soils. The vines for Donnafugata's only white wine from Etna grow on volcanic soils rich in minerals at 700-750 metres above sea level. The wine is fermented in steel tanks before being aged partly in concrete tanks and partly in second and third choice barriques for 10 months and then in bottle for a further nine months.
Straw yellow with golden reflections. Bouquet of white flowers and wild herb and citrus notes. On the palate it is full, fresh and spicy and closes with impressive freshness, elegance and an exciting mineral vein. SUPERIORE.DE

“Ben Ryé" Passito di Pantelleria DOP 2021 dolce · 0,375l
Ben Ryé - the great naturally sweet and world-famous white wine from Donnafugata. The grapes are harvested in mid-August and left to dry naturally for 20 to 30 days. In September, the later ripening grapes are harvested and freshly processed. During fermentation, the hand-picked raisined berries are added to the must in several passes. Bright orange yellow. Overwhelming aromas of apricot, peach and orange peel. Creamy notes of passion fruit and peach on the palate with impressive elegance and length. For us, one of the best sweet wines in Italy every year! SUPERIORE.DE
"Complex aromas of sultanas, caramel, honey, iced tea, peaches and vanilla. Creamy on the palate, with a zesty acidity." Decanter
"The 2021 Ben Ryé is a total pleasure, seducing with a bouquet that mixes sweet smoke with tangerine, mint leaf and clove. Like pure nectar on the palate, this envelopes all it touches in texturally ripe orchard fruits and tropical melon. Sweet spices and sour citrus add contrast toward the close. It finishes spicy and long, leaving a dusty inner floral sensation and hints of candied ginger and lime. Ben Ryé is always a total pleasure and, in my opinion, one of the top dessert wines produced in Italy. This varietal Zibibbo finishes at 197 grams of residual sugar per liter." Vinous
"Shiny orange with golden reflections, noble. Enormous scent of peaches and peach tea, honey, honeycomb, plus fine nutmeg notes, dried apricots, bergamots, oranges. Wonderfully balanced on the palate, creamy oily texture, with clear bright peach fruit, well balanced play between sugar and acidity, comes in many layers endlessly, on dried figs in the final." “Contrada Marchesa” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Besides Fragore, the Etna Cru, named after the Contrada Marchesa single vineyard of the same name, is Donnafugata's second top wine from the volcano. Its label is adorned by a volcano goddess decorated with flowers and fruits, beside her, the medieval village Castiglione di Sicilia appears. The Nerello vines grow on a lava soil rich in minerals, the location in the north of the volcano ensures moderate summers with strong temperature fluctuations between day and night.
This single-varietal Nerello presents itself in bright ruby red and reveals a generous bouquet of small red berries, spicy notes (cinnamon and black pepper) and undergrowth, followed by balsamic nuances and a delicate mineral vein. On the palate, besides its structure, the indescribable balance, the convincing freshness and an ultra-fine tannin delight. This great wine glides aristrocratically and full of elegance into a deep finish. SUPERIORE.DE

“Contrada Marchesa” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Alongside Fragore, Etna-Cru Donnafugata, named after the Contrada Marchesa vineyard of the same name, is Donnafugata's second top wine from the volcano. Its label is adorned with a volcano goddess decorated with flowers and fruit, next to which is the medieval village of Castiglione di Sicilia. The Nerello vines grow on a lava soil rich in minerals, and the location to the north of the volcano ensures temperate summers with strong temperature fluctuations between day and night.
This single-varietal Nerello presents itself in a light ruby red colour and reveals a generous bouquet of small red berries, spicy notes (cinnamon and black pepper) and undergrowth, followed by balsamic nuances and a delicate mineral vein. On the palate, in addition to its structure, the indescribable balance, convincing freshness and ultra-fine tannins are a delight. This great wine glides aristocratically and full of elegance into a deep finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Exudes a sensual aroma of forest fruits with notes of smoke and sandalwood; pithy on the palate, robust tannins, juicy, compact texture, balanced and long final. Combines character and length." Vinum
"A wine that expresses ripe cherries and raspberries with intense, dusty tannins, earthy depth and a very vertical, mineral palate." Decanter
"The Donnafugata 2019 Etna Rosso Contrada Marchesa offers obvious oak spice, especially at this early stage, and the wine will certainly need more time in bottle, even just another year, to develop. There is dark fruit and blackcurrant, but also cinnamon and sweet nutmeg. The finish is dense and structured." Wine Advocate

“Fragore” Rosso Contrada Montelaguardia Etna DOC 2020
Fragore by Donnafugata from the Etna region of Montelaguardia in Randazzo joins the collection of wine icons Mille e una Notte and Ben Ryè. With only 15,000 bottles, Donnafugata has produced a limited edition treasure. Fragore means thunder in Italian: it refers to the volcanic thunder of Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano. Grapes of the autochthonous grape variety Nerello Mascalese from selected vineyards were used.
Bright, radiant ruby red. Spicy-floral bouquet of redcurrants, tobacco, nutmeg and violets, plus a delicate flint note. Beautifully complex and elegant on the palate, the finely composed tannins lead each sip into a persistent final. SUPERIORE.DE

The name Donnafugata - the "Woman on the run" from the famous novel "The Leopard" of the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa - Giacomo and Gabriella Rallo did not choose Rallo until the 1980s. But the wineries have belonged to the family since the 19th century. The Sicilian model enterprise has long been run by the children Antonio and José with the enthusiastic involvement of culture, charity, sustainability and environmental awareness. Their roles in the oldest winery of the Mediterranean island are clearly distributed: While Antonio is in charge of production, his sister is responsible for controlling and marketing. The next generation with Gabriella and Fernando is also ready to go. In addition to all tradition, innovation is the focus of the Donnafugata wine company. A special feature: the grapes are harvested at night. This saves energy and prevents unwanted fermentation during transport.
The brilliant entry of the Rallo family into a market still standing still in the eighties and dominated only by one single brand gave Sicily's winegrowing a groundbreaking impulse. Giacomo Rallo's decision to invest not only in the Contessa Entellina headquarters in Marsala but also in Pantelleria was almost revolutionary. But the much-praised natural sweet wines crowned the adventure on the small island with its salty and calcareous soils with great success.
The impressive, well-structured range, produced in three extremely modern winemaking facilities, of the winery located in western Sicily ranges from fine fruity white wines from indigenous and international varieties, to fruity red wines, fine sweet wines, a Spumante Brut and the red, almost entirely from the local Nero d'Avola prepared Mille e Una Notte. The Zibibbo grapes, which come from a recultivated vineyard more than one hundred years old with rare vines that are true to their roots on Pantelleria, are the raw material for the world-famous sweet wine Ben Ryè.
On the path of the heroic viticulture for some years now Donnafugata, under the guidance of Antonio, winemaker of the family and custodian of craftsmanship, has also been present with its own vineyards at Etna. Nerello Mascalese is mainly cultivated here. The first vintages of wines from the volcano captivate with elegance and finesse and mark another milestone in the history of the traditional Sicilian winery.
The decision to equip the winery with a photovoltaic system shortly after the turn of the millennium was important as. Donnafugata today covers most of its energy needs with solar power. The artistic labels for the wines often inspired by literary masterpieces are part of a convincing marketing strategy: the story telling. A universal language that recounts wine and Sicily through an extraordinarily identifying fantastic and feminine language. The idea to combine music with noble drops came from José. The trained singer, who could already be heard and seen in New York, likes to combine a song with a delicious wine of the house during her performances. SUPERIORE.DE
"One year after another, the Sicilian wine landscape produced plants with plenty of structure and alcohol. In 1983 Giacomo Rallo burst into this monotony with drops that were modern, well made and pleasant to drink, heralding a new oenological age on the island. To date, the labels have lost none of their initial elegance and accommodating nature."Gambero Rosso
