“Mongrana” Bianco Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
The vineyards for this likeable Vermentino lie on gentle hills with the typical ferruginous soils of the Maremma, a mixture of silt and alluvial sand with gravel and gravel components. Mongrana Bianco reflects the characteristic features of its red sibling and beautifully illustrates the quality that Querciabella has been bringing to the bottle in Maremma for years: restrained power, freshness and saltiness from the coast and a purity of fruit that is the winery's trademark. Just 5,000 bottles of the debut 2020 vintage were produced. SUPERIORE.DE
"A saline, lightly waxy white with aromas of green apples, lemons, seashells and yoghurt. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a briny edge. Very drinkable." James Suckling

This fabulous cuvée of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet comes from Querciabella's Maremma vineyard. Charming bouquet with notes of tobacco and leather, which then give way to ripe fruit. The harmonious taste is finely fruity, intense and fresh. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright and intense ruby red. Aromas of sour cherry and blackberry on the nose, with a final tends towards tobacco and leather. Full-bodied and intense on the palate, with lovely freshness and softness, rich bouquet and beautiful, spicy finish." Falstaff
"A certified organic wine, the Querciabella 2020 Maremma Toscana Mongrana is 50% Sangiovese with the rest of the blend consisting of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These are good amounts of each variety, as the wine shows the breezy freshness of Sangiovese next to the richness and voluptuous flavors of the other two grapes. Refined in cement and stainless steel, this is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with lots of bright fruit and cherry." Wine Advocate
"Raspberries, currants, mulberries, orange zest and lemon leaves on the nose. Medium-bodied with lightly chewy tannins and bright acidity. Wild and savory with a delicious, crunchy finish." James Suckling

Chianti Classico DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Sparkling ruby red. Fragrance of sweet raspberries, notes of tobacco and violets. Enormous density, firm fruit body, with great youthful-fresh temperament, paired with a certain finesse and elegance. Finishes long with notes of juicy red berries. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. Fresh notes of beetroot, cherry, cranberries and blackberries on the nose. Lively and juicy on the palate, well integrated and fine tannins. Good finish, very exciting." Falstaff
"Just mid ruby. Perfumed but shy nose with hints of stones. Supple, suave and elegant and with a full aromatic spread on the palate. Great polish and shine. Fantastic crunchy tannins. A real beauty." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Chianti Classico (100% Sangiovese) is laced with the essence of red/purplish berry fruit, spice, cedar and floral notes. Readers will find a classic expression of both the vintage and the house style in this super-appealing mid-weight Classico." Vinous
"Bringing together fruit from Greve, Radda and Gaiole, Querciabella’s annata provides a wide-angle panorama of the diverse Chianti Classico zone. The 2019 is a portrait of clarity and depth. It starts discreetly then doles out aromas of cinnamon, mint, incense, liquorice and black raspberry. Sophisticated and polished, the palate unfolds confidently and gracefully. The wood is well-integrated, as are the powdery, suede-like tannins. There's lovely intensity of violet and a brightness to the whole." Decanter
"Plenty of sweet berry and cherry character with hints of stone and fresh mushrooms. Chocolate, too. It’s medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a chewy yet refined texture. Flavorful finish. Solid and very integrated." James Suckling
"Solid, as usual, interpretation of Classico by Querciabella, result of a strong work both in the countryside and in the cellar, and from raw material of beautiful fragrance. Nose with marked dark characteristics, black currant, then licorice and juniper. Salty-sapid sip, return of fruit and undergrowth." Luca Gardini

Chianti Classico DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Vineyards in Gaiole and Greve form the core of the blend, with a touch of fruit from Radda. On the nose, floral aromas and red fruits in the super-classic, mid-weight style that is so typical of the Querciabella style today. Rose petals, lavender, mint and sweet raspberry fruit are in the foreground. In the drink enormous density, firm fruit body, with great youthful-fresh temperament, paired with a certain finesse and elegance. Ends long with notes of juicy red berries, great! SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous mid ruby. Perfumed and concentrated on the nose and finely balanced on the palate. Lots of polished tannins and vibrant red fruit. Suave and long." Jancis Robinson
"Bright, sparkling ruby red. On the nose ripe wild berries, juicy cherries and pickled cranberries, plus fine mint. On the palate with a clear fruit core, taut tannin and crisp acidity." Falstaff
"This is Querciabella’s calling card – and an impressive one at that. It also gives an incisive panoramic shot of the Chianti Classico region as it's a blend of estate vineyards in three different subzones. Bright and fresh, the 2020 annata emerges energetically out of the glass with exuberant and pure red cherry and currants. It gains intrigue with stylish touches of mocha, tarragon and truffles. It's full and vigorous yet light on its feet thanks to radiant acidity, while well-formed tannins lend just the right amount of chew. As suave as it is characterful." Decanter
"The 2020 Chianti Classico is bright, fresh and nicely lifted, with terrific precision and energy lending quite a bit of character. Bright red Sangiovese fruit, spice and a touch of blood orange are front and center. Even so, the 2020 appears to still be recovering from its bottling. That should not be an issue in another 6-12 months' time. This is the first vintage that includes fruit from parcel in Greve's Lamole district." Vinous
"Pure fruit on the nose, with rose hips, cherries, blueberries, lemon leaves and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with tangy acidity and firm tannins. Vibrant and elegant, with such purity of fruit." James Suckling

“Turpino” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)
The elegant blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot surprises with its fragrance full of purity and the intensely aromatic fruit flavour. Elegance and finesse trump muscle in Turpino, a wine that is always beautifully light on its feet. Fermentation in wooden barrels and ageing in barrique give the spicy, balsamic notes of the grape blend a smoothness, a fine frame and a beguilingly long finish on the palate. With its tangy acidity balancing the ripe fruit, Turpino manages to be generous and restrained at the same time, making it a great accompaniment to Mediterranean meat dishes. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose, notwithstanding this is from the hot and torrid 2017 vintage. Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of (international) appeal. Great fun to drink." Jancis Robinson
"Clean sweet spices, earthy and cherry notes combined with a bit of sweet tobacco. Mouth-filling, round and smooth with firm tannins." Decanter
"A full-bodied, structured red with lots of blackcurrants, wild blackberries and cloves. Black olives, dried violets and raw cacao, too. Firm, slightly leafy tannins. Drink after 2023." James Suckling
"The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone." Vinous

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)
Querciabella's Riserva is a great blend of the three best Chianti sites in Greve, Radda and Gaiole. Pure elegance on all levels: Rich ruby garnet, subtle aromas of cherry, anise and tobacco, joined by notes of jasmine and violets. Pleasantly medium-bodied on the palate, ripe black cherries and herbs, very typical of this terroir. Balanced fruit, the structure is dominated by obvious, superbly integrated tannins and remarkably perfect acidity. Intense and persistent with enough extract for exciting storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby red. Slightly fleshy on the nose, lots of rich red berries, rose petal. On the palate red berries, juicy and clear, spreads fresh, slightly drying in the finish." Falstaff
"Lustrous crimson. Pure raspberry with the polish of oak, but barely noticeable. Beautiful precision on the palate with raspberry, jewel-like acidity and fine polished tannins. Gorgeous length and style." Jancis Robinson
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is a wonderfully polished and expressive wine. Dark cherry, spice, tobacco, cedar, dark cherry, leather and tobacco. Darker, virile and intense the Riserva retains the classic Querciabella mid-weight style. I imagine the 2018 will give readers two decades of very fine drinking." Vinous
"Plenty of generous Black Forest gateau richness with charming dark chocolate, cold coffee, and mocha complexity. Intense yet elegant." Decanter
"Fleeting hints of lavender and lemon verbena aromas give way to a beam of pure cherry in this sleek, intense and harmonious red. Taut, yet vibrant, with a long, lingering aftertaste of fruit, wild herbs and stony mineral elements. Excellent length." Wine Spectator
"Complex aromas of dark cherries, vanilla, flowers and lavender. It’s full-bodied with polished and very fine tannins. Very racy and intense with gorgeous length and intensity. This is really structured. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. It needs a year or two to soften, but very serious. Try after 2023." James Suckling
"Carefully low yields, mix of vineyards located between Greve, Radda and Gaiole, halfway up the hill, cultivated in biodynamic regime, here is the recipe of the always valuable Querciabella Riserva. Wild plum on the nose, with notes of chinotto and undergrowth, salty-sapid at the drink, with fruitycitrus return and persistence." Luca Gardini

"Dark, almost impenetrable ruby red. Discreet on the nose, with fine spice, dark fruit and earthy notes. Expands quickly and purposefully on the palate, restrained but precise fruit, with firm, tightly meshed tannin, still young but with plenty of pressure and development potential." Falstaff
"Fresh aromas of cherries and orange peel follow through to a medium body with firm tannins and a bright finish. The tannins are a little firm now. Citrusy acidity." James Suckling
"The 2019 Turpino, Querciabella's top wine from Maremma, is understated and yet quite expressive. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice and licorice are nicely lifted by a good dose of Cabernet Franc in the blend. This aromatic, layered red holds quite a bit of appeal. Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Querciabella's Riserva, with an annual production of 10,000 bottles, is a selection of the best lots. It blends fruit from Greve, where the vineyards lie between 350 and 550 metres, with grapes from the stony uplands of Radda and the chalky soils of Gaiole. The 2019 vintage presents itself restrained but very precise. Enticing scents of spring flowers, cranberries and potting soil are underpinned by vanilla and smoke. The palate is polished and pure, with delicious, tangy acidity and sinewy tannins. As every year, one of the most refined wines of the appellation. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep, shiny ruby red. Captivating, deep sour cherry and raspberry nose that is still quite youthful. Nice intensity of fruit and with a hint of oak. Pleasant, tangy, deep raspberry fruit with lovely chewy tannins clinging to the fruit. Long lasting. Amazing balance between gripping, ripe tannins and deep, tangy fruit." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva is a great wine that comes from vineyards in Greve, Radda and Gaiole. Dark and powerful in the glass, the 2019 offers dark fruits, spices, leather, savoury herbs, tobacco and earthy notes. I would give it a few years to mature." Vinous
"At first, coffee and mocha permeate the dark red cherry, while with a little coaxing, rosemary and sage hints emerge. The palate is confident yet agile, with a lovely, pure fruit of black raspberry ringing out. Pleasant tannins expand leisurely, and the fine-grained framework will provide balanced support over the next 10 years." Decanter
"Supple and intense, this red wine is saturated with aromas and flavours of black cherries, blackberries, flowers, wild herbs and minerals. On the long finish, the solid structure is well covered by flesh. It offers fine harmony and expression." Wine Spectator
"A fragrant and lively red wine with aromas of sour cherries, lemons, cloves, cracked pepper and dried flowers on the nose. Medium-bodied with silky tannins and bright acidity. Juicy and delicious with lots of energy." James Suckling

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)
Batàr is undoubtedly reminiscent of Burgundy, but with unmistakable Tuscan authenticity. Vintage after vintage, Querciabella's forward-thinking winemaking has moved beyond the hedonistic idea of growing foreign, albeit noble, white grapes in a stronghold of red wines to focus on expressing a particular sense of place. The Batàr's inherent vitality and classic minerality clearly come from the high altitude vineyards of Ruffoli and the Galestro soils typical of the best Chianti Classico sites.
Batàr's legendary ability to defy age and improve over time requires a careful combination of hand-picked Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco grapes, timely micro-vinification and patient ageing in barrel. The long time on the lees in high-quality French barriques allows the individual lots to develop their best expression. Only when the optimal maturation is complete is the final assemblage put together through extensive sampling. Further maturation in the bottle before release seals the multi-layered texture that is the proverbial mouthfeel of Batàr.
Exudes elegant aromas of jasmine, peach and sweet tropical fruits and a lively minerality. Batàr secures its many admirers with great finesse and opulent diversity and has undoubtedly been one of Italy's best white wines for decades! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright light gold. In the nose peppermint, cream, some hazelnut, in the reverberation fine fumé and ripe stone fruit. Smooth and round on the palate, spreads creamy and pleasantly over the tongue, balanced, a little set in the final, still needs time." Falstaff
"The 2020 Batàr, Querciabella's white Chardonnay/White Burgundy, is infused with notes of tangerine oil, jasmine, spices and pear. Later, light tropical accents are added, giving the whole wine a wonderful nuance. The switch to high altitude vineyards and the earlier harvest result in a Batàr that has great freshness and style." Vinous
"The organic Batàr 2020 offers fresh, citrusy notes with lemon curd and candied peach. This barrel-aged white wine also offers medium density and lots of fruit, saffron and light spices. It finishes with fresh acidity." Wine Advocate
"Intense nose of cedar, smoked almonds, mango puree, papaya and lemon pie. Full-bodied, dense and creamy with delicious praline and pie crust character, balanced by just the right amount of lemony acidity." James Suckling
"The 2020 vintage is more herbal than usual, with sage, thyme and a citrussy character, then its typical peach kernel core. The attack is full, silky, concentrated and textured, yet vibrant on the finish. One of the most sought after white wines of Italy, with proven ability to age, Batàr originates from vineyards in Ruffoli, in Greve in Chianti, some of which reach 600m. The Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco grapes are fermented and aged for nine months in French oak. It's a very classic white SuperTuscan (first vintage was 1988) with a stylish Corton-Charlemagne attitude." Decanter

“Camartina” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)
Rich aromas of black and red berries such as black cherry and blueberry, joined by notes of ripe plum and tamarind. With further aeration then multi-layered notes of ivy, forest floor and freshly cut bark with hints of leather, sweet tobacco and liquorice. The full and silky body is framed by firm but well-integrated tannins supported by excellent acidity. Then, just before the long finish, ripe black fruits enriched by nutmeg and sweet spices. Great its Tuscan identity full of energy and liveliness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ruby red. In the nose notes of small ripe red fruits, cassis, elderberries, violets with a hint of mint and liquorice. On the palate rich, juicy, fruity and with a hint of sweet spice. Persistent finish with well integrated tannins." Falstaff
"This supple red wine features aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, plums, Mediterranean herbs and leather. It shows fine intensity and a lively structure that makes it clear and long on the earthy finish." Wine Spectator
"Currant and floral aromas with some cement and violets. Medium bodied, firm tannins and tangy acidity with lots of citrus peel. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two when it has mellowed." James Suckling
"The organic Camartina 2018 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese. A consistent performer year after year, this Tuscan blend shows an exotic quality, with barbecue spice or steak sauce framing a core of smooth dark fruit. But the flavours don't stop there. They unfold in the form of balsamic herbs, blue flowers and grilled rosemary." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Camartina is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Dark, brooding and quite closed, the 2018 is going to require cellaring and a good bit of patience, too. Dark-fleshed fruit, leather, spice, menthol and grilled herbs emerge with some coaxing. The Cabernet is quite evident in both the flavor profile and overall structure, which likely explains the wine's general feel today." Vinous

“Camartina” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO)
Camartina has always been the winery's flagship, and by now Palafreno has also taken the position on par. Compared to Palafreno (100% Merlot), Camartina consists of a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon, which gives it a robust fruit profile and more freshness and straightforwardness. Sweet floral notes, red berry fruit, mint and chalky notes give the 2019 soaring top notes, energy and an intriguing vibrancy. It is always elegant and even rather restrained at first. Camartina has a firm place in Querciabella's noble portfolio, and this is due in no small part to its impressive finesse and intensity. Everything done right! SUPERIORE.DE

“Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015 (BIO)
Energetic, incredibly multi-layered Merlot of the extra class. Ethereal bouquet of plum, black cherry, menthol and spices. Very rich in nuances on the palate, opulent to expressive, at second glance then smooth, almost elegant. Almost unbeatable in complexity, depth and richness of finesse, in the next years he will reveal more and more of his repertoire. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, intense ruby red. Clear and fragrant nose of blackberry, cherry and mulberry, with spicy components (quendel, tyhmian). On the palate it shows dense, firm tannin, clear fruit, in the final again emphasized spicy notes, firm pressure." Falstaff
"This is a beautiful merlot showing blackberry, black-olive and fresh-herb character. Full-bodied with very chewy yet polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish." James Suckling
"The 2015 Palafreno is one of the more understated Tuscan Merlots readers will come across. This site, in the Ruffoli district of Greve, at 400 meters above sea level, yields a distinctly savory, nuanced Merlot that emphasizes energy and nuance over power, all of which make it a truly special and distinctive wine. Even in this warm year, Palafreno needs time in bottle to soften the tannins." Vinous

“Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO)
Palafreno 2019 is wonderfully polished and lively. Firm but well-integrated tannins form the backbone for a Merlot that is endowed with considerable energy. Spicy herbs, tobacco and wild flowers add complexity. Very nuanced on the palate, opulent to expressive, then at second glance supple, downright elegant. Almost unbeatable in complexity, depth and richness of finesse, it will reveal more and more of its first-class repertoire in the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red with purple and opaque core. Very spicy on the nose, with dark berry fruit, cherries, blackberries, a hint of sealing wax, cassis and a fine fleshy component. On the palate hearty, compact and balanced, spans the palate with great dark berry fruit, shows noble resinous notes in addition, very exciting and juicy, great length, put away." Falstaff
"This is very polished and structured with a finesse to the tannins which spread across the palate. It’s full-bodied with fine fruit and a driven finish. It needs three or four years to soften and open." James Suckling
"The 2019 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from Greve's Ruffoli district, is stunning, not to mention one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted here. Silky, plush and exceptionally vivid in the glass, the Palafreno possesses breathtaking beauty that captivates all the senses. At this early stage, the 2019 is all primary dark fruit, but the layers will start to open with cellaring. Readers who can find it should not hesitate. It's a real head turner." Vinous

Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2018 (BIO)
After much anticipation, we present to you today the second vintage of an exceptional Sangiovese from Querciabella's Ruffoli single vineyard.
Back in 2007, the winery embarked on the Cru project with the aim of highlighting the natural elegance and vitality of Sangiovese and the essential value of what the Latin call "genius loci". What began as an experiment and a challenge evolved into years of constant but calculated work to identify the best vineyards in Chianti Classico. The best winemaking and ageing methods were then applied to enhance the special influence of the origin on the wine's texture, taste and character.
The altitude of over 500 m a.s.l., identified in this way, gives the wine great depth, balance and brilliant acidity. This great Sangiovese acidity combined with well-matured tannins, excellent structure and just as much flavour make 2018 one of the most balanced vintages of the last decade. Slow ageing in wood for about 18 months enhances the varietal identity and brings a Chianti Classico to the glass that deserves the designation Gran Selezione like no other. SUPERIORE.DE
"This is my first sample of a Gran Selezione by Querciabella. The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Querciabella draws its fruit from the Ruffoli Vineyard in Greve in Chianti with vines planted in schistous galestro and sandstone soils at a cool 500 meters in elevation. This vintage comes off as open and accessible with warm-vintage fruit, tobacco, crushed stone and dried rose. There is a hint of soft cherry ripeness." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a powerful, dense wine. Frost in 2017 affected the next vintage's potential yield, which likely explains the sheer intensity here. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, leather and sage all saturate the palate. There's tremendous creaminess and depth here. I can't wait to see how the 2018 ages, as it is a pretty big wine by Querciabella standards." Vinous
"This has aromas of dark plum, peach, bay leaf, spearmint and vanilla. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a deliciously layered palate. Lovely interplay of stone fruit, herbs and spices. Long and elegant, with very fine and focused tannins. Fantastic purity." James Suckling

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
"Sparkling, light golden yellow. Very appealing and exciting note, first of flint, then mango, pineapple and some sage. Juicy in the attack and course, fine tropical fruit, shows good tension, creamy and long in the finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Batàr, 50% Chardonnay/50% Pinot Blanc, offers up an exotic mélange of tangerine peel, pineapple, spice and passionfruit. The move towards a more refined style here has paid off big-time." Vinous
"Sliced apples, peaches, peach blossom, cedar and smoked almonds on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with a creamy texture. Layered and delicious with subtle spice notes and ripe stone fruit, balanced by bright acidity." James Suckling

"Querciabella's 2015 Batàr (Chardonnay/Pinot Bianco) is very delicate and restrained, especially within the context of the year. Lemon confit, white flowers, orange peel and mint all develop nicely in the glass, but it is the wine's persistence that stands out most. The 2015 is one of the most polished, gracious Batàrs I can remember tasting." Antonio Galloni

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Batar exudes elegant aromas of jasmine, peach and sweet tropical fruits and a lively minerality. Batar secures its many admirers with great finesse and opulent diversity and is undoubtedly one of the best white wines in Italy! SUPERIORE.DE
"The dried-pear and toasty-oak aromas make this a very distinctive white. Ripe and generous, but with more than enough freshness. Polished, long finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"The 2016 Batàr is superb. Candied lemon peel, mint, chamomile and lightly tropical notes are all laced together. In the glass, the 2016 has a real sense of phenolic intensity that offers a striking counter to the floral aromatics and expressive, layered fruit. The 2016 is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Blanc, much of that younger plantings of the Gouges clones of Pinot Blanc sourced in Burgundy. Today, the Batàr is tightly wound and piercing in its brightness. Another few years in bottle should do the trick." VINOUS
"This 2016 is just so complete and balanced. The key was a not-too-hot summer and large diurnal differences at night which led to a longer, slower ripening season. Bright green-gold in colour, it has plenty of richness and concentration but in a focused, pure and precise framework. It has a wonderful seamless flow across the palate, so harmonious with a softly melting texture. Ing comments, 'There's an energy to the 2016.' I agree!" Decanter

"The 2020 Batàr, Querciabella's white Chardonnay/White Burgundy, is infused with notes of tangerine oil, jasmine, spices and pear. Later, light tropical accents are added, giving the whole wine a wonderful nuance. The switch to high altitude vineyards and the earlier harvest result in a Batàr that has great freshness and style." "The organic Batàr 2020 offers fresh, citrusy notes with lemon curd and candied peach. This barrel-aged white wine also offers medium density and lots of fruit, saffron and light spice.
"Very pretty and precise with tight tannins and polish. It's linear and compact with blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry character. Racy and polished." James Suckling
"Ripe, sweet black currant, black cherry, iron, leather and tobacco flavors mingle in this tightly-wound red. Balanced, dense and remains focused and persistent on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

“Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Elegance is the strength: 100% Merlot from Central Tuscany, which already offers great drinking pleasure today, but whose complexity of taste will increase enormously as it matures. Brilliant colour, a varied bouquet and a firm body with balanced proportions as well as a hearty taste with a long, elegant aftertaste are its unmistakable characteristics and enable it to compete with the very large Merlots of Tuscany. SUPERIORE.DE
"A balanced and easy wine with dried berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Full body, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Made from organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"The 2012 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from the Ruffoli sub-zone of Greve, is superb. High-altitude, hillside vineyards confer grace and nuance to a Merlot built on exquisite finesse. Sweet plum, mocha, rose petal and white pepper add gorgeous aromatic lift on the silky, sensual finish. Readers should expect an understated Merlot that emphasizes elegance over power." Antonio Galloni
"100% Merlot from a cooler, high-altitude north to north-west facing site in Greve. Its pure, pristine, clearly delineated aromatics and flavours of black raspberry, plum, blackberry and spice are simply gorgeous - a lovely sappy, vibrant style of Merlot with a rich but taut feel. In some ways, this is more like Cabernet Franc than Merlot. It was picked at just the right level of ripeness: not too ripe and not too green, and therefore has beautiful poise and balance." Decanter

Only one hectare of vines and a few old farm buildings belonged to the Agricola Querciabella when the Milanese family Cossia Castiglioni bought the farm in 1972. It then took just two years for the company, which comes from the steel sector "quality fanatics" Giuseppe Cossia Castiglioni had the first bottles bottled. Today the estate, located on the Ruffoli hill near Greve in Chianti Classico, is one of the most prestigious wine producers in Tuscany.
The farm, now managed by Sebastiano Cossa Castiglioni, son of the founder, covers 51 hectares of vineyards in Chianti Classico and 32 hectares in a farm acquired in 1997 in the Maremma. The partly newly planted areas are planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot and Syrah. Since 1988 with organic viticulture and since the turn of the millennium with biodynamic viticulture, the Querciabella estate has been combining sustainable agriculture with the highest level of wine enjoyment. In the vineyard and in the cellar, Manfred Ing, who was born and raised in South Africa, is responsible alongside Sebastiano. The makers even do without the use of blue copper and sulphur permitted in organic viticulture. The vineyards in the upper region of the Ruffoli Hill are already reacting to the impulses given to the soil by consistent, near-natural cultivation.
Sebastiano not only purchased stainless steel fermenters and numerous new barriques, but also engaged Guido de Santi, one of Italy's best oenologists. The Chianti Classico team, in particular, has for some time been using more careful vinification methods in order to pay even greater tribute to the individual characteristics of the grapes.
The ambition of the Querciabella winery is still very high: Chianti Classico, Palafreno (pure Merlot) and the Cuvée Camartina are particularly good. But also the white Batar is every year so good (and durable) that it is probably the best white wine of Central Tuscany for some wine connoisseurs. We can all be sure that the special characteristics of all labels will continue to be carefully worked out in the Tuscan top winery in the future. SUPERIORE.DE
