“Mongrana” Bianco Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)
The vineyards for this likeable Vermentino lie on gentle hills with the typical ferruginous soils of the Maremma, a mixture of silt and alluvial sand with gravel and gravel components. Mongrana Bianco reflects the characteristic features of its red sibling and beautifully illustrates the quality that Querciabella has been bringing to the bottle in Maremma for years: restrained power, freshness and saltiness from the coast and a purity of fruit that is the winery's trademark. Just 5,000 bottles of the debut 2020 vintage were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)
Querciabella's Riserva is a great blend of the three best Chianti sites in Greve, Radda and Gaiole. Pure elegance on all levels: Rich ruby garnet, subtle aromas of cherry, anise and tobacco, joined by notes of jasmine and violets. Pleasantly medium-bodied on the palate, ripe black cherries and herbs, very typical of this terroir. Balanced fruit, the structure is dominated by obvious, superbly integrated tannins and remarkably perfect acidity. Intense and persistent with enough extract for exciting storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby red. Slightly fleshy on the nose, lots of rich red berries, rose petal. On the palate red berries, juicy and clear, spreads fresh, slightly drying in the finish." Falstaff
"Lustrous crimson. Pure raspberry with the polish of oak, but barely noticeable. Beautiful precision on the palate with raspberry, jewel-like acidity and fine polished tannins. Gorgeous length and style." Jancis Robinson
"The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is a wonderfully polished and expressive wine. Dark cherry, spice, tobacco, cedar, dark cherry, leather and tobacco. Darker, virile and intense the Riserva retains the classic Querciabella mid-weight style. I imagine the 2018 will give readers two decades of very fine drinking." Vinous
"Plenty of generous Black Forest gateau richness with charming dark chocolate, cold coffee, and mocha complexity. Intense yet elegant." Decanter
"Fleeting hints of lavender and lemon verbena aromas give way to a beam of pure cherry in this sleek, intense and harmonious red. Taut, yet vibrant, with a long, lingering aftertaste of fruit, wild herbs and stony mineral elements. Excellent length." Wine Spectator
"Complex aromas of dark cherries, vanilla, flowers and lavender. It’s full-bodied with polished and very fine tannins. Very racy and intense with gorgeous length and intensity. This is really structured. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. It needs a year or two to soften, but very serious. Try after 2023." James Suckling

“Turpino” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)
The elegant blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot surprises with its fragrance full of purity and the intensely aromatic fruit flavour. Elegance and finesse trump muscle in Turpino, a wine that is always beautifully light on its feet. Fermentation in wooden barrels and ageing in barrique give the spicy, balsamic notes of the grape blend a smoothness, a fine frame and a beguilingly long finish on the palate. With its tangy acidity balancing the ripe fruit, Turpino manages to be generous and restrained at the same time, making it a great accompaniment to Mediterranean meat dishes. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lustrous deep crimson. Deep red- and dark-fruit nose with hints of dark spice. Savoury rather than sweet or ripe on the nose, notwithstanding this is from the hot and torrid 2017 vintage. Hint of earth and dried moss. Lush red and dark fruit with a muscular structure that is completely integrated with the fruit. Hedonistic, long, and with loads of (international) appeal. Great fun to drink." Jancis Robinson
"Clean sweet spices, earthy and cherry notes combined with a bit of sweet tobacco. Mouth-filling, round and smooth with firm tannins." Decanter
"A full-bodied, structured red with lots of blackcurrants, wild blackberries and cloves. Black olives, dried violets and raw cacao, too. Firm, slightly leafy tannins. Drink after 2023." James Suckling
"The 2017 Turpino is quite reticent, which is surprising given the style and personality of the year. Black cherry, pine, menthol, licorice and chocolate develop nicely over time. Readers should give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle, as it is not at all ready to drink now. The 2017 embodies the house style at Querciabella these days nicely. The wine is rich and deep, but not at all overdone." Vinous

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2019 (BIO)
Batàr is undoubtedly reminiscent of Burgundy, but with unmistakable Tuscan authenticity. Vintage after vintage, Querciabella's forward-thinking winemaking has moved beyond the hedonistic idea of growing foreign, albeit noble, white grapes in a stronghold of red wines to focus on expressing a particular sense of place. The Batàr's inherent vitality and classic minerality clearly come from the high altitude vineyards of Ruffoli and the Galestro soils typical of the best Chianti Classico sites.
Batàr's legendary ability to defy age and improve over time requires a careful combination of hand-picked Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco grapes, timely micro-vinification and patient ageing in barrel. “Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 (BIO)
Elegance is the strength: 100% Merlot from Central Tuscany, which already offers great drinking pleasure today, but whose complexity of taste will increase enormously as it matures. Brilliant colour, a varied bouquet and a firm body with balanced proportions as well as a hearty taste with a long, elegant aftertaste are its unmistakable characteristics and enable it to compete with the very large Merlots of Tuscany. SUPERIORE.DE
"A balanced and easy wine with dried berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Full body, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Made from organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"The 2012 Palafreno, 100% Merlot from the Ruffoli sub-zone of Greve, is superb. High-altitude, hillside vineyards confer grace and nuance to a Merlot built on exquisite finesse. Sweet plum, mocha, rose petal and white pepper add gorgeous aromatic lift on the silky, sensual finish. Readers should expect an understated Merlot that emphasizes elegance over power." Antonio Galloni
"100% Merlot from a cooler, high-altitude north to north-west facing site in Greve. Its pure, pristine, clearly delineated aromatics and flavours of black raspberry, plum, blackberry and spice are simply gorgeous - a lovely sappy, vibrant style of Merlot with a rich but taut feel. In some ways, this is more like Cabernet Franc than Merlot. It was picked at just the right level of ripeness: not too ripe and not too green, and therefore has beautiful poise and balance." Decanter

Energetic, incredibly multi-layered Merlot of the extra class. Ethereal bouquet of plum, black cherry, menthol and spices. Almost unbeatable in complexity, depth and richness of finesse, in the next years he will reveal more and more of his repertoire. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, intense ruby red. Clear and fragrant nose of blackberry, cherry and mulberry, with spicy components (quendel, tyhmian). On the palate it shows dense, firm tannin, clear fruit, in the final again emphasized spicy notes, firm pressure." Falstaff
"This is a beautiful merlot showing blackberry, black-olive and fresh-herb character. Full-bodied with very chewy yet polished tannins and a long and flavorful finish." James Suckling
"The 2015 Palafreno is one of the more understated Tuscan Merlots readers will come across. This site, in the Ruffoli district of Greve, at 400 meters above sea level, yields a distinctly savory, nuanced Merlot that emphasizes energy and nuance over power, all of which make it a truly special and distinctive wine. Even in this warm year, Palafreno needs time in bottle to soften the tannins." Vinous

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
The long time on the lees in high-quality French barriques allows the individual lots to develop their best expression. Only when the optimal maturation is complete is the final assemblage put together through extensive sampling. Further maturation in the bottle before release seals the multi-layered texture that is the proverbial mouthfeel of Batàr.
Exudes elegant aromas of jasmine, peach and sweet tropical fruits and a lively minerality. Batàr secures its many admirers with great finesse and opulent diversity and has undoubtedly been one of Italy's best white wines for decades! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Batàr is perfumed and gracious, with lovely orchard fruit, chamomile and floral notes that lift effortlessly from the glass. A wine of total precision and nuance, the 2018 is simply exquisite today. Stylistically it is a bit more perfumed and lighter than is the norm." Vinous
"Cooked apple, honey and light vanilla with some stone and praline undertones. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and a flavorful finish. White peaches, too. Fantastic white." James Suckling
"Bright green-gold, it's lightly fragrant with orange blossom and neroli notes leading to a very juicy palate. The flavours are full of salty juiciness with exotic fruit, cream and orange rind notes. This is still very young and tightly wound, not yet expressing its full potential - but that potential is great." Decanter

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2015 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Batar exudes elegant aromas of jasmine, peach and sweet tropical fruits and a lively minerality. With great finesse and opulence, Batar secures its numerous admirers and is undoubtedly one of the best white wines in Italy! SUPERIORE.DE
"Creamy in texture, with well-integrated oak, this shows off buttery peach, apple, honey and floral aromas and flavors. Fine length." Jancis Robinson
"The nose is very involved showing green apples, preserved lemons, almond granita and vanilla. Full body, medium acidity and a creamy finish." James Suckling
"Creamy in texture, with well-integrated oak, this shows off buttery peach, apple, honey and floral aromas and flavors. Fine length." Wine Spectator
"Querciabella's 2015 Batàr (Chardonnay/Pinot Bianco) is very delicate and restrained, especially within the context of the year. Lemon confit, white flowers, orange peel and mint all develop nicely in the glass, but it is the wine's persistence that stands out most. The 2015 is one of the most polished, gracious Batàrs I can remember tasting." Antonio Galloni

“Batàr” Bianco Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Batar exudes elegant aromas of jasmine, peach and sweet tropical fruits and a lively minerality. Batar secures its many admirers with great finesse and opulent diversity and is undoubtedly one of the best white wines in Italy! SUPERIORE.DE
"The dried-pear and toasty-oak aromas make this a very distinctive white. Ripe and generous, but with more than enough freshness. Polished, long finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling
"The 2016 Batàr is superb. Candied lemon peel, mint, chamomile and lightly tropical notes are all laced together. In the glass, the 2016 has a real sense of phenolic intensity that offers a striking counter to the floral aromatics and expressive, layered fruit. The 2016 is 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Blanc, much of that younger plantings of the Gouges clones of Pinot Blanc sourced in Burgundy. Today, the Batàr is tightly wound and piercing in its brightness. Another few years in bottle should do the trick." VINOUS
"This 2016 is just so complete and balanced. The key was a not-too-hot summer and large diurnal differences at night which led to a longer, slower ripening season. Bright green-gold in colour, it has plenty of richness and concentration but in a focused, pure and precise framework. It has a wonderful seamless flow across the palate, so harmonious with a softly melting texture. Ing comments, 'There's an energy to the 2016.' I agree!" Decanter

“Camartina” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC
Camartina 2016 has exceptional finesse and elegance. Elegant, deep ruby red. Rich aromas of black and red berries such as black cherry and blueberry, joined by notes of ripe plum and tamarind. With further aeration then multi-layered notes of ivy, forest floor and freshly cut bark with hints of leather, sweet tobacco and liquorice. The full and silky body is framed by firm but well-integrated tannins supported by excellent acidity. Then, just before the long finish, ripe black fruits enriched by nutmeg and sweet spices. Great its Tuscan identity full of energy and liveliness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, dense ruby. Opens on the nose with fine spicy notes, cinnamon blossom and clove, followed by cassis and plum. Substantial and powerful on the attack, opens with many layers of present tannin, lots of juicy berry fruit." Falstaff
"Very pretty and precise with tight tannins and polish. It's linear and compact with blackberry, blackcurrant and cherry character. Racy and polished." James Suckling
"Ripe, sweet black currant, black cherry, iron, leather and tobacco flavors mingle in this tightly-wound red. Balanced, dense and remains focused and persistent on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Camartina is superb. As always, Camartina is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese, all from Greve's Ruffoli district, where Querciabella is located. At this stage in its development, the Camartina is driven by Sangiovese in its red-toned fruit, aromatics and acid profile. The 2016 is vibrant, saline and full of energy. I am so intrigued to see how it develops in bottle." Vinous

“Palafreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2012 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC

“Camartina” Rosso Toscana IGT 2010 (BIO) · Double-MAGNUM in OWC
Camartina 2010 presents itself sparkling ruby, with opulent fragrant bouquet of cloves, lots of blackberry fruit, some chocolate. On the palate very much juicy fruit, spicy notes, underlaid by grippy tannin, very clear and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2010 Camartina is one of the most beautiful versions of this wine I have tasted in some time. Layered and vibrant on the palate, the 2010 impresses for its finesse and nuance. Freshly cut flowers, mint, dark red berries and graphite all meld together in a wine of exceptional refinement. Today, the aromas and flavors are naturally not fully expressive, but another few years should work wonders. The cool, late-ripening season yielded a Camartina of understated class and pedigree. This is a fabulous showing." Antonio Galloni
"A powerful red wine with an abundance of berry, dried fruits and hints of vanilla on the nose and palate. Full body, with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Needs at least two or three years of bottle age to come together. Made from biodynamically grown grapes." James Suckling
"A vivid, fresh style, whose berry and cherry flavors are focused and augmented by tobacco, underbrush and iron notes. Tight and intense, presenting a long, mineral-inflected finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese." Wine Spectator
"The 2010 Camartina offers many beautiful surprises. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Sangiovese is a structured and powerful wine, but it offers elegance and balance as well. This classic vintage has done its part to shape a wine that offers bright fruit intensity, delineated aromas of blueberry and spice, and a richly velvety sensation in the mouth. You can hold this wine for the next ten years." Robert Parker

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016 (BIO) · METHUSALEM 6 Liters in OWC
Querciabella's Riserva is a great blend from the three best Chianti locations in Greve, Radda and Gaiole. Pure elegance on all levels: Rich ruby, subtle aromas of cherry, aniseed and tobacco, followed by notes of jasmine and violet. On the palate pleasantly medium-weight, ripe black cherries and herbs, very typical for this terroir. Well-balanced fruit, the structure is dominated by obvious, well integrated tannins and a remarkably perfect acidity. Intense and persistent with sufficient extract for safe storage potential. Chapeau! SUPERIORE.DE
"Fleshy, dark ruby. Very appealing and open nose, lots of ripe raspberry and blackberry, behind this fine spicy notes. Juicy and clear at the beginning and the end, beautifully worked out fruit, unfolds in the rear with dense tannin, very long finish." Falstaff
"Beautiful, concentrated ruby. Quite closed and backward, but subtle and complex on the nose. Bags of concentrated fruit and yet super-elegant palate. Vibrant with perfectly built, long, fine tannins. Refreshing and complex." Jancis Robinson
"Energy and firmness showing in a medium-bodied package of currants and cherries, as well as cedar and flowers. Lightly chewy tannins and a linear, tight finish. Needs some time to soften, but already a beauty. From biodynamically grown grapes." James Suckling
"A big Chianti Classico, with vanilla and resin notes from new oak wrapped around cherry, strawberry, iron and earth flavors. This verges on racy despite the breadth, with a dense swath of tannins providing grip on the finish. The oak is up front and should be absorbed well over time. Best from 2022." Wine Spectator
"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is an attractive wine built on aromatics and structure, with the fruit more in the background. It will be interesting to see if it fleshes out with more time in bottle. Sweet red cherry, lavender, rose petal, mint and spice gradually develop in the glass, but the 2016 remains quite reticent. It will be interesting to see if time in bottle brings out more depth. Today, the 2016 is decidedly shy. I very much like the energy here." Vinous
"Querciabella's 10,000 bottle annual production Riserva is a selection of superior lots. It blends fruit from Greve where their vineyards range from 350 to 550 metres, with grapes from Radda's high altitude stony sites and Gaiole's limestone rich soils. The 2016 is restrained but precise. Intriguing scents of spring blossoms, cranberry bush and potting soil are subtly laced with vanilla and smoke. Very polished and pure on palate with mouth-watering, tangy acidity and sinewy tannins. This sophisticated, buttoned-up Riserva could do with another year in the bottle." Decanter

Only one hectare of vines and a few old farm buildings belonged to the Agricola Querciabella when the Milanese family Cossia Castiglioni bought the farm in 1972. It then took just two years for the company, which comes from the steel sector "quality fanatics" Giuseppe Cossia Castiglioni had the first bottles bottled. Today the estate, located on the Ruffoli hill near Greve in Chianti Classico, is one of the most prestigious wine producers in Tuscany.
The farm, now managed by Sebastiano Cossa Castiglioni, son of the founder, covers 74 hectares of vineyards in Chianti Classico and 32 hectares in a farm acquired in 1997 in the Maremma. The partly newly planted areas are planted with Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot and Syrah. Since 1988 with organic viticulture and since the turn of the millennium with biodynamic viticulture, the Querciabella estate has been combining sustainable agriculture with the highest level of wine enjoyment. The makers even do without the use of blue copper and sulphur permitted in organic viticulture. The vineyards in the upper region of the Ruffoli Hill are already reacting to the impulses given to the soil by consistent, near-natural cultivation.
Sebastiano not only purchased stainless steel fermenters and numerous new barriques, but also engaged Guido de Santi, one of Italy's best oenologists. The Chianti Classico team, in particular, has for some time been using more careful vinification methods in order to pay even greater tribute to the individual characteristics of the grapes.
The ambition of the Querciabella winery is still very high: Chianti Classico, Palafreno (pure Merlot) and the Cuvée Camartina are particularly good. But also the white Batar is every year so good (and durable) that it is probably the best white wine of Central Tuscany for some wine connoisseurs. We can all be sure that the special characteristics of all labels will continue to be carefully worked out in the Tuscan top winery in the future. (superiore.de)
