“Vette di San Leonardo” Sauvignon Bianco Dolomiti IGT 2022
The 100% Sauvignon Blanc of Tenuta San Leonardo is a fragrant and lively white wine that always remains true to the varietal character of the grape. The vineyards lie beneath snow-capped mountains and rock formations carved by glaciers. Vette impressively reflects the sharpness and brilliant intensity of the panoramic terrain that has noticeably shaped it. On the nose, it is reminiscent of exotic fruits and passion fruit; on the palate, there is well-integrated acidity and a subtle mineral component. A fresh, juicy finish rounds off the wonderful drinking experience. SUPERIORE.DE
"A light white wine with notes of chive blossom, grapefruit zest and white pepper that underlines the crisp fruit of white peach and melon. Crackles with racy acidity that drives the lacy, petrol-tinged finish." Wine Spectator
"This Sauvignon Blanc opens with aromas of yellow peach, fresh herbs and lemon zest. The palate shows strong acidity followed by tropical fruits, savoury spices and a hint of toasted honey, all supported by a structured palate that evolves as the wine opens." Wine Enthusiast
"Good intensity of fresh, ripe gooseberries with hints of sour cream, green mangoes, grapefruit and seeds. Fresh and chalky on the palate with zesty acidity that extends to an elegant finish." James Suckling
"Bright straw yellow with silver reflections. Beguiling, intense nose, elderflower and white peach, some nettle. Lots of gooseberry on the palate, tangy, gripping acidity, discreetly mouthwatering on the final." Falstaff

San Leonardo's single-varietal Lagrein Rosé displays a seductive pink melon colour and a captivating blend of crushed stones, forest herbs, wild berries and freshly cut pear. "The 2022 Rosato Gemma lifts from the glass with a captivating blend of dusty rose, wild strawberries and dried citrus peels. This is racy and full of tension, teeming with minerality and brisk acidity, enhancing its crisp orchard fruits. It leaves a pretty inner sweetness and the mouth watering for more as nectarine traces slowly fade. That is the beauty of Lagrein Rosato. Nicely done." Vinous

“Villa Gresti di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2017
Villa Gresti is an exciting cuvée of Merlot and Carménère that is a very nice balance between fruit intensity, spice, ripe cherry and sweet tobacco. Medium-bodied on the palate, with a softness and a very attractive, drinkystyle and a rich, fruit-driven finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Rosso Villa Gresti di San Leonardo wafts up with a woodsy character, blending crushed violets, balsam and lavender with wild berries and crushed chalk. Its textures are like pure silk, ushering in a dense wave of ripe red and blue fruits offset by brisk acidity as savory herbal tones form toward the close. This leaves wild blueberries and citrus hints lingering while finishing only lightly structured and surprisingly fresh. Of note is that production was drastically reduced by over 50% due to the warm and dry conditions of the vintage." Vinous
"The Tenuta San Leonardo 2017 Villa Gresti is a blend of Merlot and Carmenère. A beautiful wine with bright intensity and dark fruit, with lovely layers of blackberries, soft cherries and spice. This warm vintage is particularly focused on the lush primary fruit delivered over an elegant, medium weight finish." Wine Advocate
"For its age, this wine is so lively and has so many herbal aromas, it almost has an herbal liqueur nose! Very cool and elegant, just like a good old Bordeaux is, but with youthful vitality and a core of blackberries and ripe elderberries. Confidently dry finish." James Suckling

"Intense ruby red. Notes of red fruits, strawberry, fresh cherry and slightly floral notes. Juicy, fruity and slightly tannic on the palate. Good persistence and pleasant aftertaste." Falstaff
"Darkly floral and brooding in the glass, the 2018 Rosso Villa Gresti di San Leonardo grumbles up with musky black currants and smokey grilled herbs. This is soft-textured, round and savory in style with depths of mineral-inflected dark red fruits. It finishes fresh and potent with only a subtle tug of fine tannin. “Carménère di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2018
The Carménère grape, which is hardly ever found in Italy and is normally found in the Médoc, is reinterpreted in a masterly way at Tenuta San Leonardo. Deep, dark ruby red, with a broad-shouldered bouquet of dark fruit and very harmonious spice. The barely noticeable acidity makes it round on the palate, silky smooth and extremely long and elegant. With this single-varietal red, too, the winery impressively demonstrates its lone class in the region. SUPERIORE.DE
"This medium- to full-bodied red feels almost effortlessly integrated, with fine-grained tannins and an underlying tar-tinged minerality framing woven flavors of ripe black currant, herbed black olive, ground coffee and loamy earth. Long, creamy finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Carménère is darkly floral and intense, displaying mentholated herbs, peppery florals, blackberries and mint. This is pure elegance on the palate, soothingly soft and expressive, with ripe red and black fruits underscored by savory mineral tones and vibrant acidity that maintains a lovely energy throughout. It finishes remarkably fresh with a gentle tug of tannins, leaving licorice and violet inner florals to fade. The 2018 is a darling, impressing on its elegance and grace. There was no 2017 produced due to the low quantities of the vintage." Vinous
"This unique and delicious 100% Carmenère from the mountains of Alto Adige opens with aromas of dark cherry, black plum and cassis. As the wine opens it offers notes of black tea, dried mountain herbs and tobacco. The palate showcases the structure of the grape with opulent fruit that is hemmed in by ripe tannins, finishing with notes of baking spice and bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"Black cherries, cigar box, haw fruit, oriental herbs, black pepper, roasted red chili pepper and tapenade on the nose. A hint of savory cocoa powder, too. Juicy and very fresh on the medium-bodied palate with firm, fresh tannins and a long, peppery finish. Racy, cool and energetic. Very drinkable." James Suckling

“San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2018
San Leonardo is the flagship of the eponymous winery and one of the best red wines of Trentino every year. Opulent bouquet with nuances of dark fruits such as blackberry and sour cherry. Delicate spicy, leather and tobacco notes give it a terrific complexity, which is then extended on the palate by a harmonious play of dark berries, plums, the whole then flanked by clearly contoured tannin. A masterful red with a strong personality that will rise to its true greatness after a few more years of bottle ageing and live up to its reputation. SUPERIORE.DE
"A graceful red wine that starts quietly with a pure note of ripe blackcurrant and slowly expands on the palate to weave flavours of bay leaf and smoked tobacco, bitter cherry, minerals, graphite and cigar box spices. The finely woven spectrum of flavours reveals supple tannins that define the elegant finish." Wine Spectator
"A mentholated freshness introduces the 2018 San Leonardo as it slowly blossoms in the glass. As the glass swirls, a depth of dusty sage and violets unfolds, merging into white pepper and blackcurrant. This wine is elegant, full-bodied and powerful. Sour citrus fruits highlight ripe wild berries and savoury spices. The 2018 leaves nothing out and finishes long and lightly textured, with a framework of fine tannins that gently tug at the senses as blackberry and rose notes slowly fade. The 2018 is an understated and youthful beauty that should be left in the cellar for a few more years. That means hands off, because the best is yet to come." Vinous
"The latest release of this outstanding northern Italian red wine offers complex scents of tobacco, spices, earth and rich, wood-soaked black berries. In the mouth, it combines intense concentration with freshness in a vertical sense of balance and spice. Dark, plummy, spicy hedgerow berries are perfectly balanced by bright, savoury acidity and ripe, grainy tannins, with spicy cedar, dried currants and a hint of balsamic depth. It still has so much to offer." Decanter
"Perhaps the only Trentino Bordeaux capable of evolving to arrive with personality to this day, in a vintage of grace. Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Merlot. Jammy cherries, underbrush, juniper and rhubarb, dense-salty, crisp and compact mouthfeel, splendidly persistent finish." Luca Gardini

"Dark shining ruby garnet. Noble-scented, spicy nose of ripe green pepper, violet and cassis, distinctly of freshly ground peppercorn, reverberating with ivy. Juicy and clear on the palate, tightens up precisely, with well-balanced fruit and acidity, will age superbly." Falstaff
"An exciting, energetic wine that finally gives the carmenere grape (from Bordeaux) a positive profile in Northeastern Italy, where it arrived in the late 19th century. Complex mushroom, soy–sauce and spicy character. The racy tannins and acidity are married to the juicy and vibrant palate, which breaks the mold for this region decisively!" James Suckling
"From the moment I tilt the glass, the 2016 Carmenere makes itself known with an intensely spicy and pungently floral bouquet that mixes crushed stone and smoke with dried flowers, white pepper and red currant. It’s undeniably silky and refined, yet medium in body, as tart wild berries mix with savory spices and hints of sour citrus, all enlivened by juicy acidity. While long and saturating with primary concentration, the 2016 comes across as only lightly structured yet harmonious, with a subtle coating of sweet tannin and sour citrus that lingers, along with hints of tart raspberry and minerals. There's an open–knit feel to this today, but it also has the balance for a long evolution. Very nice." Vinous
"The Tenuta San Leonardo 2016 Carmenère is less immediately expressive compared to the warm 2015 vintage that I tasted at the same time. However, my money is on this bottle for longer aging potential, and I'm sure the wine's aromas will prove fluid and complex with additional bottle age. Even now, it shows enormous precision with dark fruit, spice and a good dose of crushed white pepper." Wine Advocate

"Bright, rich ruby red. In the nose floral aromas of lavender, geranium, then fresh cassis and elderberry, in addition some liquorice, in the background fine spice of mint and sage. Opens radiantly and with a juicy core on the palate, clear fruit accompanies the course, in addition noble spice, still youthful, currently with almost hardly perceptible wide-meshedness in the finish." Falstaff
"The 2017 San Leonardo is dark, inward and intense with masses of crushed black currants, mint, sage, and balsamic spice. This pulls you close, as further depths of clove and tobacco form in the glass. It coasts along the palate with dense and polished textural fruits, mineral to the core, yet also elevated by brisk acids, while slowly drenching the senses in concentration. This leaves a web of fine tannins and a salty flourish, while tapering off with remarkable length. It's poised with savory herbs that linger long. In 2017, production was down by over 50% due to multiple hail events and a cask that was damaged during maturation." Vinous
"You could easily mistake the stunningly deep and subtle nose of this Sub–Alpine red for a high–end Medoc wine from the same vintage (which was on the restrained side). A super–elegant, mid–weight cabernet sauvignon–dominated blend with plenty of fine tannin married to blackcurrant and forest–berry fruit, plus touches of licorice, savory notes and bitter chocolate at the very long finish." James Suckling
"The Tenuta San Leonardo 2017 San Leonardo shows subtle but unmistakable generosity and exuberance that is absolutely in line with this hot vintage. In this regard, the 2017 stands apart from past vintages from this estate that is celebrated for its elegant, undertone and long–term approach. This wine is slightly more accessible too, with plush, dark fruit, balanced oak spice and perfumed rose over a polished, silky mouthfeel." Wine Advocate

"Powerful, bright ruby with a slight violet shimmer. Opens with fine spicy notes of bay leaf and white pepper, then lots of dark currant. Emphasises spicy notes on the palate as well, opens with fine-meshed tannin, flows quietly along, long and juicy." Falstaff
"A very elegant, classic Bordeaux blend in the Italian context, but this is actually a special wine in any context, thanks to its subtlety and aromatic complexity. Blackcurrant, black–cherry and mint notes with just a hint of red bell pepper. Finely etched, medium–bodied palate with crisp tannins and lively acidity. The elegant tannins carry the long, cool finish." James Suckling
"Another year in bottle has added unexpected depths and dimension to the 2016 San Leonardo. It wafts up with an alluring bouquet of smoky black currant and plum skins, complicated by savory herbs, hints of white pepper and fresh tobacco. It's hard chiseled edges have formed into smooth contours now, velvety yet youthfully dense, washing mineral encased dark red and black berries across a core of brisk acidity as a combination of saline–minerals and grippy tannins add tension toward the close. This finishes incredibly long yet also structured, begging for time in the cellar, as hints of licorice and earth tones grumble under an air of inner violet florals. The potential within the 2016 San Leonardo is off the charts, yet it will require a good amount of time to come fully into focus. Bury your bottles deep." Vinous
"A wine to drink at least 10 years from now, the 2016 San Leonardo is positioned to be enjoyed in the far long term. Like its Tuscan cousin from Bolgheri, Sassicaia, San Leonardo from the mountainous north of Italy is always a wine that starts off quietly but that grows in intensity and complexity as it completes its bottle evolution. This elegant vintage reveals beautiful tones of dark berry fruit, spice and freshly milled white pepper. The wine is exceptionally balanced, fresh and long." Wine Advocate

The 300-year-old Tenuta San Leonardo is undisputedly one of the top vineyards in Trentino and has long been producing one of the best wines in the region, the red wine of the same name. Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga's wines were inspired by none other than Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Tenuta San Guido/Sassicaia). The close friendship of the Marchesi is marked by a fascination for outstanding Grand Crus and as a result, top Italian wines from Bordeaux-typical grape varieties are now produced not only in Western Tuscany but also in Trento.
Before Carlo planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, he trained his knowledge in numerous French wineries and on the Tenuta San Guido, where he finally met the Bordeaux-crazy Marchese. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta became his "oenological godfather", and the subsequent collaboration with the famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis shaped the style of the magnificent Tenuta San Leonardo from then on.
In 1982 Carlo published his first vintage of the Bordeaux blend San Leonardo, inspired by the example of Sassicaia. The result exceeded all expectations: Aromatic complexity and unique elegance immediately made the wine the flagship of the winery of the same name. The cuvée of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère and 10% Merlot is awarded the highest accolades of the Italian wine guides every year and is only released on the market if it meets the high standards of the Marchesi. For several years now, the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been responsible for the vinification.
In 2001 Carlo's son Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga took over the management of the family business and has remained true to his father's high quality standards. Tenuta San Leonardo has now been owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga for over three decades and is located in the beautiful Lagarina Valley, right on the border with Veneto. The organic cultivation of the 30 hectares of vineyards is a matter of course here and reflects the enormous respect for the territory and its conservation.
The mountainous scenery of Monti Lessini protects the vineyards in the south of Trento from cold north winds and the Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda, together with the optimum temperature differences between day and night, create the basic conditions for the best possible growth and ripening of the grapes. In the carefully tended vineyards, other French grape varieties also thrive, which are processed into expressive wines through no less dedication.
In addition to the numerous award-winning symbol wine San Leonardo, the winery also produces its younger, primary fruity brother Terre di San Leonardo as well as a varietal Carmenère from old vines and the Merlot-based cuvée Villa Gresti. The renowned white wine tradition of the region, on the other hand, is impressively expressed in the pure Sauvignon Blanc Vette.
Trentino's wine industry is characterised by numerous cooperative wineries and is home to only a few private wineries, including the Tenuta San Leonardo. Thanks to the driving passion for the enjoyment of great Bordeaux wines and the ambition to produce equally great wines in Italy, the San Leonardo winery has become an unparalleled success story in the region.
