“Vette di San Leonardo” Sauvignon Bianco Dolomiti IGT 2019

The 100% Sauvignon Blanc of Tenuta San Leonardo is a fragrant and lively white wine that always remains true to the varietal character of the grape variety. The vineyards are located below snow-covered mountains and rock formations carved by glaciers. Vette impressively reflects the sharpness and brilliant intensity of the panoramic terrain that has markedly shaped it. On the nose, it is reminiscent of exotic fruit and passion fruit, while on the palate there is well-integrated acidity and a subtle mineral component. A fresh, juicy finish rounds off the wonderful drinking experience. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Vette di San Leonardo is a varietal Sauvignon Blanc that bursts from the glass with a gorgeous display of spiced lemon rinds, white spring florals and crushed stone minerality. This gains volume and depth over time, adding a sweetness that keeps you coming back for more. It’s remarkably pure and precise, with laser-like acidity and a tart citrus tension that offsets its pure and lifted character. Don’t expect to put this super-stimulating and energized Sauvignon in the cellar, because it’s firing on all cylinders already." Vinous

“Terre di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2016

The entry wine into the big world of Tenuta di San Leonardo gives us a taste of the fruit intensity and exuberance associated with the 2016 vintage. The grapes for this lovely red cuvee of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère come without exception from the winery's own vineyards. Terre offers present notes of black cherry, spice and blackberry. It is a whimsical, lively and very fruit-driven red that will provide much pleasure within the next few years! SUPERIORE.DE

"A lightly herbal red with impressions of dried hay, redcurrants and cranberry pie. Light to medium body, fine yet firm tannins and a medium finish." James Suckling

"The 2016 Terre di San Leonardo Rosso is an excellent introduction to the producer and their style. Crushed black cherries, wild, peppery herbs, crushed stone and hints of animal musk can be found in the glass. It trades power for tension, displaying a mix of tart woodland red and black berry fruits, complemented by zesty acids and minerals with just a hint of sweet spice. Its structure is present yet doesn’t overwhelm." Vinous

"The well-priced 2016 Terre di San Leonardo is a terrific sounding board not only for the vintage and its classic lines but also for the unique San Leonardo territory and microclimate at the Adige River bed between mountain peaks. The wine opens to a medium-light appearance with dark garnet highlights. The aromas are delicate and soft, with a lot of blue flower and wild rose. A refreshing layer of forest berry and cassis come next, and the bouquet finishes up with mulling spice and smoke. There is a point of sour cherry or cranberry on the finish." Robert Parker

    • "Carmenère di San Leonardo" Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2015

“Carmenère di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2015

The Carmenère grape, which is hardly represented in Italy and normally rather located in the Médoc, is reinterpreted in a masterly way at Tenuta San Leonardo. Deep, dark ruby red, in the bouquet broad-shouldered after dark fruit and with very harmonious spice. The barely perceptible acidity makes it round, silky smooth and extremely long and elegant on the palate. Also with this single-varietal red, the winery impressively shows its lonely class in the region. SUPERIORE.DE

"Carmenère in the north of Italy has a long history despite sometimes being confused with other grape varieties. Very few are producing it 100% as is this top selection of San Leonardo. Coming from the oldest vineyards of the estate, this wine is made with the same style of the blend: spontaneous 15/18 days of fermentation in small concrete vats with periodic pumpovers and délestage, than 24 months of maturation of partly new French oak. Full of spice aromas, such as black pepper, almost curry, clove and mostly coffee powder, it shows an amazing grace of silky tannins and delicate acidity." Decanter

"Savory, sweet, spicy and fresh, the 2015 Carmenère di San Leonardo is pulling me closer and closer to the glass with its seductive bouquet, mixing depths of cherry and young strawberry with cracked black pepper, rosemary and sage, as white smoke combines with the slightest hint of brown sugar to set off all of the pleasure sensors in the brain. This is elegant and refined, showing silky textures playing host to tart red and a hint of black fruit, with noble tannins, as inner florals and savory herbs resonate for up to a minute, leaving just a hint of blackberry in their wake. This is a selection from San Leonardo’s oldest vines of Carmenère, and it’s a stunner!" Vinous

San Leonardo is the flagship of the eponymous winery and every year one of the best red wines of Trentino. Opulent bouquet with nuances of dark fruits like blackberry and sour cherry. Delicate spicy, leather and tobacco notes give it a terrific complexity, which is then extended on the palate by a harmonious play of dark berries, plums, the whole then flanked by clearly contoured tannin. A masterful red with a strong personality, which will rise to its true greatness after a few more years of bottle ageing and will live up to its reputation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby. Ripe berry fruit, plus thyme, oregano and fine chocolate. Spicy herbs on the attack, some cardamom, salty, unfolds with firm, sturdy tannins, rich power, but also elegant and long." Falstaff

"This is very youthful and clearly has the structure underneath to go quite a distance. Great freshness and bite but not at all skinny. Much more aérienne than the average red bordeaux – on which it was originally modelled. Very long indeed." Jancis Robinson

"Notes of wet tobacco, dried earth, cumin, cedar and dried red plums form the basis of the nose. Structured and serious on the palate with just the right amount of fruit to balance out the backbone of firm, austere tannins." James Suckling

"San Leonardo is the iconic wine of the estate, and one of the most celebrated Bordeaux blends of Italy with its cool climate profile. The warm 2015 vintage doesn’t differ from the leaner style of the wine (compared to other Bordeaux blends), which is a good benchmark to understand the sense of elegance here. The nose sees purity of fruit (cassis) typical of Trentino Alto Adige, finely melted with leather and green pepper aromas. If you dislike wines with a slightly herbal aroma is understandable but here this touch adds another layer and the wine on the palate shines with silky, super elegant tannins. Refreshing and amazingly savoury, it plays well even with brasato or other powerful dishes of red meat." Decanter

"The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar." Vinous

"The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I'd still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution." Robert Parker

About the winemakersTenuta San LeonardoTrentino-South Tyrol
    Tenuta San Leonardo

The 300-year-old Tenuta San Leonardo is undisputedly one of the top vineyards in Trentino and has long been producing one of the best wines in the region, the red wine of the same name. Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga's wines were inspired by none other than Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Tenuta San Guido/Sassicaia). The close friendship of the Marchesi is marked by a fascination for outstanding Grand Crus and as a result, top Italian wines from Bordeaux-typical grape varieties are now produced not only in Western Tuscany but also in Trento.

Before Carlo planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, he trained his knowledge in numerous French wineries and on the Tenuta San Guido, where he finally met the Bordeaux-crazy Marchese. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta became his "oenological godfather", and the subsequent collaboration with the famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis shaped the style of the magnificent Tenuta San Leonardo from then on.

In 1982 Carlo published his first vintage of the Bordeaux blend San Leonardo, inspired by the example of Sassicaia. The result exceeded all expectations: Aromatic complexity and unique elegance immediately made the wine the flagship of the winery of the same name. The cuvée of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère and 10% Merlot is awarded the highest accolades of the Italian wine guides every year and is only released on the market if it meets the high standards of the Marchesi. For several years now, the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been responsible for the vinification.

In 2001 Carlo's son Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga took over the management of the family business and has remained true to his father's high quality standards. Tenuta San Leonardo has now been owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga for over three decades and is located in the beautiful Lagarina Valley, right on the border with Veneto. The organic cultivation of the 30 hectares of vineyards is a matter of course here and reflects the enormous respect for the territory and its conservation.

The mountainous scenery of Monti Lessini protects the vineyards in the south of Trento from cold north winds and the Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda, together with the optimum temperature differences between day and night, create the basic conditions for the best possible growth and ripening of the grapes. In the carefully tended vineyards, other French grape varieties also thrive, which are processed into expressive wines through no less dedication.

In addition to the numerous award-winning symbol wine San Leonardo, the winery also produces its younger, primary fruity brother Terre di San Leonardo as well as a varietal Carmenère from old vines and the Merlot-based cuvée Villa Gresti. The renowned white wine tradition of the region, on the other hand, is impressively expressed in the pure Sauvignon Blanc Vette.

Trentino's wine industry is characterised by numerous cooperative wineries and is home to only a few private wineries, including the Tenuta San Leonardo. Thanks to the driving passion for the enjoyment of great Bordeaux wines and the ambition to produce equally great wines in Italy, the San Leonardo winery has become an unparalleled success story in the region. SUPERIORE.DE
