“Vette di San Leonardo” Sauvignon Bianco Dolomiti IGT 2018

The 100% Sauvignon Blanc of the Tenuta San Leonardo is a fragrant and lively white wine, which always remains true to the varietal character of the grape variety. The vineyards are located below snow-capped mountains and rock formations rugged by glaciers. Vette impressively reflects the sharpness and brilliant intensity of the panoramic area that has marked it. On the nose it reminds us of exotic fruits and passion fruits, on the palate the well-integrated acidity and a subtle mineral component are added. A fresh, juicy finish rounds off this wonderful drinking experience. SUPERIORE.DE

"A subtly perfumed, floral nose of jasmine and chive blossom draws you into the glass of this creamy, light- to medium-bodied white, where mouthwatering acidity and finely knit flavors of nectarine, lemon curd and stone await." Wine Spectator

"Lots of sliced green apples and mouthwatering gooseberries on this one, and not, thankfully, much in the way of pyrazine character. Good body and oiliness on the palate, but it’s also taut and quite vivacious." James Suckling

“Villa Gresti di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2014

Villa Gresti is an exciting cuvée of Merlot and Carmenère, which represents a very nice balance between fruit intensity, spice, ripe cherry and sweet tobacco. On the palate, it is medium-strong, with a softness and a very attractive drinking style and a rich, fruity finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"An elegant red, fresh and medium- to full-bodied, with sculpted tannins and a concentrated range of cassis, dusty sage, loamy mineral and graphite notes that linger on the finish. Merlot and Carmenère." Wine Spectator

    • "Carmenère di San Leonardo" Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2015

“Carmenère di San Leonardo” Rosso Dolomiti IGT 2015

The Carmenère grape, which is hardly represented in Italy and is usually more located in the Médoc, is masterfully reinterpreted by the Tenuta San Leonardo. Deep, dark ruby red, in the bouquet broad shouldered to dark fruit and with very harmonious spice. The barely noticeable acidity makes it round on the palate, silky smooth and extremely long and elegant. Also with this pure red, the winery impressively shows its lonely class in the region. SUPERIORE.DE

"Carmenère in the north of Italy has a long history despite sometimes being confused with other grape varieties. Very few are producing it 100% as is this top selection of San Leonardo. Coming from the oldest vineyards of the estate, this wine is made with the same style of the blend: spontaneous 15/18 days of fermentation in small concrete vats with periodic pumpovers and délestage, than 24 months of maturation of partly new French oak. Full of spice aromas, such as black pepper, almost curry, clove and mostly coffee powder, it shows an amazing grace of silky tannins and delicate acidity." Decanter

San Leonardo is the flagship of the winery of the same name and every year it is one of the best red wines of Trentino. Opulent bouquet with nuances of dark fruits like blackberry and sour cherry. Delicate notes of spices, leather and tobacco give it a terrific complexity, which is then extended on the palate by a harmonious play of dark berries, plums, all flanked by clearly contoured tannins. A masterful red wine with a strong personality, which after a few years of further bottle ripening rises to its true greatness and lives up to its reputation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby. Ripe berry fruit, with thyme, oregano and fine chocolate. In the beginning spicy herbs, some cardamom, salty, unfolds with firm, substantial tannin, rich power, but also elegant and long." Falstaff

"This is very youthful and clearly has the structure underneath to go quite a distance. Great freshness and bite but not at all skinny. Much more aérienne than the average red bordeaux – on which it was originally modelled. Very long indeed." Jancis Robinson

"Notes of wet tobacco, dried earth, cumin, cedar and dried red plums form the basis of the nose. Structured and serious on the palate with just the right amount of fruit to balance out the backbone of firm, austere tannins." James Suckling

"I am reluctant to draw too many conclusions from this sample because it has not yet finished its bottle evolution. San Leonardo is notorious for its long aging requirements, even in a warm and accessible vintage such as this. From what we can determine now, this is shaping up to be a beautiful wine with deep inner fruit richness and exuberance. In its current state, the wine is lavish and extremely radiant. I am faithful that great results will follow. Stay tuned..." Robert Parker

"San Leonardo is the iconic wine of the estate, and one of the most celebrated Bordeaux blends of Italy with its cool climate profile. The warm 2015 vintage doesn’t differ from the leaner style of the wine (compared to other Bordeaux blends), which is a good benchmark to understand the sense of elegance here. The nose sees purity of fruit (cassis) typical of Trentino Alto Adige, finely melted with leather and green pepper aromas. If you dislike wines with a slightly herbal aroma is understandable but here this touch adds another layer and the wine on the palate shines with silky, super elegant tannins. Refreshing and amazingly savoury, it plays well even with brasato or other powerful dishes of red meat." Decanter

    Tenuta San Leonardo

The 300-year-old Tenuta San Leonardo is undisputedly one of the top vineyards in Trentino and has long been producing one of the best wines in the region, the red wine of the same name. Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga's wines were inspired by none other than Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (Tenuta San Guido/Sassicaia). The close friendship of the Marchesi is marked by a fascination for outstanding Grand Crus and as a result, top Italian wines from Bordeaux-typical grape varieties are now produced not only in Western Tuscany but also in Trento.

Before Carlo planted his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, he trained his knowledge in numerous French wineries and on the Tenuta San Guido, where he finally met the Bordeaux-crazy Marchese. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta became his "oenological godfather", and the subsequent collaboration with the famous oenologist Giacomo Tachis shaped the style of the magnificent Tenuta San Leonardo from then on.

In 1982 Carlo published his first vintage of the Bordeaux blend San Leonardo, inspired by the example of Sassicaia. The result exceeded all expectations: Aromatic complexity and unique elegance immediately made the wine the flagship of the winery of the same name. The cuvée of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère and 10% Merlot is awarded the highest accolades of the Italian wine guides every year and is only released on the market if it meets the high standards of the Marchesi. For several years now, the star oenologist Carlo Ferrini has been responsible for the vinification.

In 2001 Carlo's son Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga took over the management of the family business and has remained true to his father's high quality standards. Tenuta San Leonardo has now been owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga for over three decades and is located in the beautiful Lagarina Valley, right on the border with Veneto. The organic cultivation of the 30 hectares of vineyards is a matter of course here and reflects the enormous respect for the territory and its conservation.

The mountainous scenery of Monti Lessini protects the vineyards in the south of Trento from cold north winds and the Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda, together with the optimum temperature differences between day and night, create the basic conditions for the best possible growth and ripening of the grapes. In the carefully tended vineyards, other French grape varieties also thrive, which are processed into expressive wines through no less dedication.

In addition to the numerous award-winning symbol wine San Leonardo, the winery also produces its younger, primary fruity brother Terre di San Leonardo as well as a varietal Carmenère from old vines and the Merlot-based cuvée Villa Gresti. The renowned white wine tradition of the region, on the other hand, is impressively expressed in the pure Sauvignon Blanc Vette.

Trentino's wine industry is characterised by numerous cooperative wineries and is home to only a few private wineries, including the Tenuta San Leonardo. Thanks to the driving passion for the enjoyment of great Bordeaux wines and the ambition to produce equally great wines in Italy, the San Leonardo winery has become an unparalleled success story in the region. SUPERIORE.DE
