“Tre Vigne” Barbera d’Alba DOC 2017

The grapes for the Barbera d'Alba Tre Vigne, which is impressive every year, come mainly from vineyards in Castiglione Falletto, a small part of the fruit comes from Ravera. SUPERIORE.DE

"After its malolactic fermentation in small wood casks and a year in botte grande, the totally unfiltered 2017 Barbera d'Alba Tre Vigne shows up as soft, immediate and rich, with nice little chocolate notes around the borders. Impressively, the various parcels of vines for this wine are all in the middle of the prestigious Barolo appellation." Robert Parker

Barbera d'Asti Superiore Nizza La Crena smells of ripe red fruits, hay and pastries, the full-bodied taste with a wonderful alcoholic warmth sounds long with fine cocoa tones. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Barbera d'Asti La Crena is dense, powerful and packed with fruit. An intense, dark wine, the 2015 has layers of mineral and floral notes in the background that need time to emerge. It would be a shame to open the 2015 anytime soon. I always find La Crena only truly blossoms with time in bottle. Here, too, the style seems a bit laid back relative to the recent past." VINOUS

"The 2015 Barbera d'Asti La Crena shows an evolved and sophisticated personality. Indeed, this wine is released one year later compared to a Barbera from Alba because fruit from neighboring Asti requires extra time to open. The nose is redolent of black fruit with background notes of wet earth and crushed mineral. These mineral tones give the wine an almost salty quality that would pair perfectly next to ham or grilled sausage." Robert Parker

"Intense and polished, this version is saturated with blackberry, plum and vanilla flavors, all matched to a dense, refined structure. A chocolate thread graces the aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Barbera d'Asti La Crena is going to need many years to be at its most expressive. Then again, that is La Crena. Today, the 2016 is rich, dense and super-concentrated, with huge layers of fruit that cover the subtler notes that come through after several years in bottle. The energy and tension that are typical of Asti come through on the finish." Vinous

"A juicy and fruity barbera with blackberry and walnut character. Medium body, slightly firm tannins and a juicy finish." James Suckling

"This is a gorgeous wine, so creamy and rich. Luca Currado has hit the magic button here with the 2016 Barbera d'Asti La Crena. Beautifully ripe and succulent, and teeming with generous layers of bright fruit, this expression is opulent and complete. The vines used here in the so-called Vigna del Nove parcel are from the 1930s, with the first edition of La Crena produced by Vietti in 1996. This is a particularly elegant vintage, spreading vibrantly over the entire mouthfeel. I'd preserve the texture by serving it only with some light crackers and aromatic cheeses." Robert Parker

    • Barolo "Castiglione" DOCG 2013

      Barolo “Castiglione” DOCG 2013

Barolo Castiglione comes from 11 different vineyards and has been the inexpensive entry into the world of fine Barolo from Vietti for years. With great care in the vineyard and cellar, a drop is produced here that inspires us every year with its opulence and wonderful elegance. With its dominant fruit it stands full and round in the glass, shows a fine leather and menthol note and gives in its overall appearance a perfect foretaste of the large individual vineyards of the winery. Like every year, you should give him a few years before you discover all his strength and finesse. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a very fruit-forward Barolo with lots of dried-berry and rose-petal character. Full-bodied, round and soft-textured. Generous." James Suckling

"The 2013 Barolo Castiglione is a terrific success story. This is the estate's bread and butter Barolo. Fruit is sourced throughout the Castiglione Falletto township. The wine is consistent and steady, offering amazing value and quality with each new release. The nose is generous and full. It imparts fresh fruit and dark cherry aromas with tar, smoke and licorice at the back. Evident structure gives the wine a firm backbone and will carry it through the next decade of cellar aging." Robert Parker

"The 2013 Barolo Castiglione is rich, powerful and intense, especially for what is the estate's entry-level Barolo. Dark cherry, plum, spice, new leather and menthol are all used together. Intense and voluptuous, the Castiglione shows the richer, more intense side of the vintage. Time in the glass helps release the aromatics and the brighter side of Nebbiolo. Quite simply, the 2013 is a super Barolo Castiglione that is starting to close the qualitative gap with the single vineyard Barolos." Antonio Galloni

"Vietti has produced a Castiglione bottling since 1971. Though the name suggests provenance solely from the commune of Castiglione Falletto, parcels in Monforte d'Alba, Barolo and Novello also contribute to this complex, masculine expression. Deep wild forest berries, iron and tar are evident on the nose. Though still tightly wound, the palate offers raspberry, redcurrant and baking spice alongside appetising acidity and a stony grip. An impressive stepping stone to Vietti's fantastic crus." Decanter

    • "Perbacco" Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2016 <br>MAGNUM

“Perbacco” Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2016 · MAGNUM

Perbacco shows in the fresh Bouquet first slightly leafy notes, then much cherry. On the palate nicely round, much ripe fruit, after cherries and red berries, underlaid by fine-grained tannin, long reverberation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Luca Currado likes to remind me that this wine could qualify as a full-fledged Barolo. Barrels not used in the final Barolo Castiglione blend are used to make the 2016 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco. In fact, its very name “Perbacco” translates into a somewhat corny “golly gosh” because that was the reaction Luca’s mom had when she first tasted the wine and was told it was not a Barolo. “Perbacco, it tastes like Barolo,” was her comment—and a legend was born. The Vietti family, along with Bartolo Mascarello and Dott G Cappellano back in the day, had battled for some variation of a Rosso di Barolo in the appellation laws. That never happened, but Langhe Nebbiolo is a concept that follows that same idea: you get great Nebbiolo quality at a fraction of the price. Today, Langhe Nebbiolo is one of the fastest-growing categories in the entire wine region. This beautiful vintage, with its balanced fruit and freshness, is a perfect example." Robert Parker

    • Barolo "Castiglione" DOCG 2014

      Barolo “Castiglione” DOCG 2014

Barolo Castiglione is the cheapest of the five Barolo of the house and demonstrates impressively the high level of Viettis. He begins his great appearance with dense aromas of dried cherries, plums and tar and then adds notes of white flowers and spices. Mineral shades and memories of smoked meat follow. On the palate just as complex and multi-layered, the silky tannins have a good grip. Already in his younger years he possesses a fine fruit and finesse, which identifies him as one of the outstanding representatives of the appellation. SUPERIORE.DE

"An array of berries and cherries with a floral sheen. Bright and attractive. The palate has a layer more than most, offering sour cherries and tangy, cherry-pip flavors in a supple, balanced style." James Suckling

"This is a terrific and flexible expression of Nebbiolo that can adopt to almost any dinner party setting. The 2014 Barolo Castiglione was designed for people who want to enjoy Barolo in an easy and direct manner. This Barolo is offered at higher production numbers, although this vintage is comparatively smaller. On average they make anywhere from 44,000 to 53,000 bottles, but in 2014 only 35,000 bottles were produced. The bouquet here is generous and broad with dark fruit, spice and tar. You even get a touch of citrus or dried orange peel. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner and more delicate in this vintage. Yet the tannins leave a firm footprint and promise a good aging future ahead." Robert Parker

"The 2014 Barolo Castiglione is superb. Nuanced, layered and sculpted in the glass, the Castiglione is a wine of real precision and class. In 2014, the Castiglione is medium in body and gracious, with perhaps a bit less stuffing than in some previous editions, but tons of persistence. Hints of lavender, rose petal and red berry fruit lead into the crystalline, translucent finish. Time in the glass brings out this gorgeous Barolo's more refined side. Once again, the Castiglione is a real overachiever. The Castiglione is built on a core of Ravera, with a complement of fruit from other sites that are often vineyard-designated by other producers." "Vietti's 2015 Barolo Castiglione is soft, silky and pliant, all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Floral and nicely lifted, the 2015 is very pretty, if not quite the overachiever it can be. I expect the 2015 will be even more expressive once the tannins soften a bit further. In this tasting, the Castiglione stands out for its freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out an extra layer of textural breadth and resonance that is not immediately apparent." Vinous

"Plenty of perfume here with abundant roses and violets, as well as spice-dusted red cherries and hints of orange rind. The palate has depth and density with a sense of power and detail to the tannins. Long, dense and fresh." James Suckling

"The 2015 Barolo Castiglione is a soft and elegant expression with marked freshness and delineated fruit. Indeed, Luca Currado maintains that 2015 was not a hot vintage per se, and any jammy notes that might appear in the vintage may have to do with an overzealous approach to leaf pulling during the summer season. Old habits die hard, he says, and leaving the leaves intact contributes to the color stabilization of the wine and the successful management of its acidity. From an analytical point of view, this wine does flaunt that much-needed inner crispness. It adds focus and sharpness to the layers of dark, succulent fruit that appear on first nose." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Vietti
    Piedmont
    Vietti

In medieval Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti family has been producing wines for four generations. The estate was founded at the end of the 19th century by Carlo Vietti and sold in 2016 to the Krause family (USA), which is already owned by the Barolo caller Enrico Serafino. The first wines were marketed in 1919 by Vietti's son Mario. The winery can pride itself on being the only producer in the Langhe to have the very best vineyards, such as Rocche and Villero, Brunate and Lazzarito. The vineyards were acquired by Alfredo Currado in the sixties. As one of the first oenologists in Piedmont, the winemaker, who died in 2010, had started to prepare single vineyard wines in the very place where traditional rules of conduct almost always prescribed Barolo and Barbaresco cuvées.

After Mario Cordero joined the company in 1960 and the vineyard work was handed over to Alfredos son Luca Currado, the actual triumph of the winery began. The traditional methods of winemaking have been combined with the use of modern technology, intelligent work in the vineyard and, above all, strict grape selection. On this basis, the Vietti Winery meticulously and meticulously produces extraordinarily characteristic, fruity wines with a firm body and great finesse.

Among the grape varieties, it is not only the Nebbiolo that stands out for the Barolos pressed from a balanced mixture of old and new style. The Barbera plants, which are also planted in the best locations and are just as long-lived, are also regularly found among the best wines in the house. Ob "Tre Vigne" or "Scarrone" - Besides the great Barolo wines, Luca Currados Barberas also set standards in their respective price ranges. But also Dolcetto and the white varieties Arneis and Moscato do not lag behind the high demands of the wine world. The meanwhile famous white grape Arneis owes it by the way not least to Alfredo Currado that she enjoys her present-day reputation and has not fallen into oblivion. SUPERIORE.DE

"'Nothing at Vietti will change, if only for the better,' said Luca Currado, oenologist and chief executive of Vietti. Both he and Mario Cordero, director of marketing and sales, will stay in their posts. 'Our family has the utmost respect for what they and their families have built over five generations and do not plan to change anything,' said new owner Kyle Krause, who emphasised his Italian-American roots and love for Barolo wines."Decanter

"Vietti's 2015 Barolos are good examples of the strengths and weaknesses of the vintage as a whole. All of the wines are fresh and medium in body, with good energy and plenty of drive. At the same time, the differences between the vineyard are not quite as marked as they are in truly outstanding years. Even so, the 2015s here are brilliant. I won't be surprised if they show even better with a few more years in bottle, as they are among the most reticent 2015s I tasted." Vinous
