• "Tradition" St. Magdalener Alto Adige DOC 2020

“Tradition” St. Magdalener Alto Adige DOC 2020

"Once upon a time, St. Magdalener, a traditional cuvée of the two autochthonous grape varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein, not only played a very important role in South Tyrolean viticulture but was also one of the most famous Italian red wines. But even today, this finely fruity and characteristically stylish red wine, named after the growing area around the wine village of St. Magdalena, has many lovers and is currently being rediscovered by many a connoisseur." Rudi Kofler (Cellar Master Cantina Terlano)

Strong ruby red, with a clear, superficial fruit of black elderberries and cherries on the nose, rounded off by a bitter almond aroma and hints of violets. Fruity on the palate, soft and elegant with a balanced acidity structure and a low tannin content for the Vernatsch variety. SUPERIORE.DE

Impeccable Pinot Bianco in brilliant clear light yellow with clean fruit aromas and lively minerality. Pear, quince and floral memories on the palate, plus a brilliant, creamy texture. The fine-bodied Pinot Blanc is one of the winery's trademarks. SUPERIORE.DE

"Snappy acidity frames this lively, light-bodied white, which features a creamy range of ripe pear and pineapple, blood orange zest and grated ginger flavors all underscored by a streak of stony mineral." Wine Spectator

"A very striking pinot bianco that combines concentration and elegance with stony minerality. Hints of exotic fruit, flowers and spices make this a fascinating expression of this still underrated grape." James Suckling

"This is lovely in its streamlined purity and simplicity. The entry-level 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Bianco Tradition is redolent of citrus, crushed stone and tangy grapefruit. Fresh and lively, this Pinot Bianco shows lots of life and energy. It's very pretty. Drink it young with a buttery linguine and shrimp scampi." Robert Parker

“Tradition” Lagrein Rosé Alto Adige DOC 2020

The Lagrein Kretzer is a brilliant light red - a typical South Tyrolean rosé. The fresh, fruity taste with memories of blueberries harmonises with the light rose bouquet. A full-bodied, stimulating drop. SUPERIORE.DE

"This bone-dry, full-bodied rosé has a very interesting interplay of tart nectarines and strawberries with leafy and savory character that might not appeal to everyone. But we find it fascinating and very distinctive. Long, very crisp berry and herb finish." James Suckling

"The Cantina Terlano 2020 Alto Adige Lagrein Rosé Tradition shows a medium ruby color with faint purple hues. This nicely saturated color is characteristic of the Lagrein grape that is otherwise known as the protagonist of inky dark red wines. However, this wine is bright and tart with cranberry, wild plum and sweet almond, and it's just the trick for a chicken salad with walnuts and raisins." Robert Parker

straw yellow, fruity and delicate on the nose of mountain blossoms, peach and apple. Precise and dry on the palate, taut and with a fine acid structure that gives it freshness and lightness. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is such a sophisticated and subtle pinot grigio that lies well outside the mainstream for this popular grape, the melon, peach and wild-herb aromas filling out the medium-bodied palate neatly, the long, supple finish tingling with mineral freshness." James Suckling

“Tradition” Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2020

Light golden yellow, intense, multi-layered aroma, clearly of lychee and grapefruit. On the palate beautiful juicy fruit, first playful, then full of spices. Very fine, fresh and not too heavy Gewürztraminer. SUPERIORE.DE

"In spite of the ripeness of this generous gewurztraminer, the yellow-rose and fruit aromas (apricot to lychee) are so very precise. Just a touch of curry leaves. Spot-on balance with mineral freshness that lifts the full body in a way that must be experienced to be believed. The perfect introduction to this category!" James Suckling

"The 2020 Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Tradition (packaged in its elegantly tall and slender bottle) is floral and fragrant for sure, but this expression from Cantina Terlano deliberately takes the grape's rather Rococo personality down a notch. The alternative offered here prizes linearity and elegance, and those distinctive aromas of jasmine and lemon blossom are contrasted against some wild sage and spicy acidity. You taste the cool altitude in this proudly mountain wine." Robert Parker

    • Terlaner Cuvée (Classico) Alto Adige DOC 2020

Terlaner Cuvée (Classico) Alto Adige DOC 2020

Terlaner Cuvée (formerly Terlaner Classico) is the wine that best embodies the identity and personality of this iconic agricultural cooperative in South Tyrol. It has been closely associated with the history of the winery like no other wine since its founding year in 1893. Since the 2013 vintage, its grapes have come from selected vineyards in the Vorberg, Kreuth and Winkl sites. Aromas of tropical fruit and passion fruit, peach, pear and sweet almonds are surrounded by a salty, mineral vein, giving this beautiful white wine finesse and the typical Terlan character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling yellow-green. Smells delicately of beeswax on the nose, then fresh notes of yellow fruits. Pulls through nicely, salty notes, has good pressure at the back, fresh Sauvignon notes on the final, fine melting." Falstaff

"A sleek white driven by racy acidity, with orange blossom and Mandarin orange peel notes imparting a fragrant, zesty overtone to the flavors of Jonagold apple, slivered almond and a hint of dried mint. Minerally smoke- and stone-accented finish." Wine Spectator

"The flinty minerality and intense wild-herb aromas set the ripe-citrus aromas of this concentrated, racy Alpine dry white alight! So much mountain freshness and minerality at the long, high-energy finish." James Suckling

"Representing excellent value, this release of about a quarter-million bottles is not at all what you would expect from a production of this scale. A blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, this vintage is the latest in a storied line that has been in production since 1893. The Pinot Bianco is grown at high altitudes, while the other two grapes come from lower elevations. The 2020 Alto Adige Terlaner Cuvée is smooth and is a veritable sounding board of stone fruit aromas, plus honey and some raw ginger or turmeric. You might serve it with a plate of smoked salmon." “Winkl” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2020

Wonderfully accentuated wine. Sauvignon Winkl smells of lime, tangerines and mint with a hint of apricot, the bouquet also reminds of crushed rock. Full of character on the palate with a fine acid wire, complex, aroma-rich and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"An effusively aromatic and expressive sauvignon blanc with notes of nettles, fresh mint and chamomile and wonderful raciness that accentuates all of this on the sleek, energetic palate. The ripeness is nicely underplayed, in a way that gives this enormously refreshing vibrancy. Very long, crisp, mineral finish." James Suckling

"This is a delightful wine that I happily paired with skinless chicken marinated in cumin, olive oil and lemon juice. The 2020 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl is fresh and tonic with lots of varietal purity and zesty energy. I suggest serving this bottle a few degrees colder than usual. “Gries” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

Deep dark purple. On the nose, tart black cherry and notes of violet candy, graphite and spicy herbs. On the palate, a wonderfully velvety texture, yet punchy, salty and with grippy tannins. Perfectly integrated wood, good structure and a justified hope for a long, ripe life. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich radiant purple with a black core. Opens with ripe dark berry nuances, blackberries, cassis and elderberries, in addition fine malt coffee and juniper. Pleasant attack with broad-shouldered body, lots of fine, harmonious tannin, sturdy structure, seems somewhat warming, long lasting finish." Falstaff

"Very dense blackberry and forest-berry nose, but somehow it manages to be delicate too, black-tea and licorice notes developing with aeration. Concentrated and plush, the tannins are really fine for this often hard-edged grape variety, gently leading you into the warm and supple crescendo finish." James Suckling

"This is a classic expression of Lagrein with all the softness and exuberant fruit weight that you should expect of this grape. The Cantina Terlano 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Gries exhibits an inky dark appearance with purple and blackish hues. To the finish, this vintage offers dustings of earth and spice; however, the core of the wine is packed tight with fruity richness. Impressively structured Chardonnay from the Kreuth estate. The western site produces a very elegant wine that convinces with its fine acidity, creamy structure and an elegant play of aromas. Complex and balanced, with an abundance of tropical fruits, underpinned by a sensual, salty minerality. Long and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, radiant straw yellow. Precise on the nose, with elegant use of wood, of cold smoke and cool yellow fruit, delicate of wet stone and wax. On the palate with rich yellow fruit, spans elegantly, mineral undertone, finesse and good length." Falstaff

"A graceful chardonnay, whose clarity and originality make it stand out from the crowded Alto Adige and global fields of ambitious wines made from this grape. Just a hint of smoke, but not in an obviously oaky way, the dominant force being the tart-pear character that gives the wine both depth and vitality. Long, clean finish." James Suckling

"Here once again is a Cantina Terlano white that punches above its price in this edition of 65,000 bottles. Showing lots of rich, ripe apricot and melon fruit, the 2019 Alto Adige Terlano Chardonnay Kreuth gives you a solid 10-year drinking window. It shows a bright yellow-gold color with rich fruit tones and a medium-weight approach that leaves ample room for the finer mineral nuances and a very light touch of oak spice. • "Vorberg" Weißburgunder Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

“Vorberg” Weißburgunder Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

The rare Riserva Vorberg from Pinot Bianco is open, elegant and expressive. Brilliant straw yellow with light green tones. Generous bouquet with delicately nuanced aromas of peach, apricot and spices. Cool, deep and with all the advantages of the grape variety on the palate. A noble Pinot Blanc with a lot of reverberation and potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling yellow-green. Opens with smoky mineral notes, then lots of juicy fruit, melon, apple and some nuts. Lush and dense on the palate, smooth, lots of ripe fruit, sparkles mineral, very long finish." Falstaff

"Enticing aromatics of dried apricot, bay leaf and spiced pineapple lead to a palate laced with exotic mango and spice." Decanter

"Deep and complex, yet delicate, this is an exceptionally concentrated and ripe pinot bianco. But it has a cool side, too, and that helps balance the toast and dried-pear character on the mid-palate before the dramatic, mineral freshness kicks in at the intense, long finish. Just beginning a long life." James Suckling

"If I were stranded on a deserted island with just one bottle of wine of my choosing, it very well might be Cantina Terlano's Vorberg. The 2018 Alto Adige Terlano Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is a case study in creaminess and texture, although the bouquet holds back just a tad, with a bit of stone fruit. That subtle shyness is a known characteristic of the grape. The wine is as steady and clear-minded as one of those high-wire daredevils, navigating a tightrope between two Dolomite mountain peaks. This expression is salty and firm and with so much energy, and yet it is also relaxed with a touch of softness to the finish." Robert Parker

    • "Nova Domus" Bianco Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

“Nova Domus” Bianco Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

A noble cuvée of Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon, as majestic as the Terlan castle ruins of the same name. Powerful and complex, multifaceted and mineral, this classic Terlaner shows off the advantages of the growing region to its best advantage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling rich straw yellow. Open, beautifully matured nose, nutty components, behind it intense tropical fruit notes. Wide on the palate, lots of sweet fruit melting, fresh, also salty depth, still has a long development perspective." Falstaff

"Hints of lime blossom and spice play on flavors of apricot, grilled nut and blood orange sorbet in this finely-meshed white. Crisp acidity firms the expressive palate, layered with a lightly chalky sensation that defines the finish. This should unfurl nicely with some short term cellaring." Wine Spectator

"Beautifully aromatic nose of honey, Spring flower, stone fruit and herbaceous fern, plush palate is graced with lush orchard fruit and refreshing gooseberry." Decanter

"The complex, toasty, fresh-herb and beeswax nose gently leads you into the generous and silky palate that has great textural complexity and spot-on balance through the very long, supple and mineral finish. A cuvée of pinot bianco, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc that dates back to this producer's foundation in 1893." James Suckling

"Just like the previous vintage, the Cantina Terlano 2018 Alto Adige Terlano Riserva Nova Domus is a blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, and again it is beautiful. Released in about 33,000 slightly heavy bottles, it flaunts an elaborate embroidery of aromas and shows what real texture can be in a white wine. Peach, mineral, toasted almond and dried cumin seed all make appearances in this gorgeous blend. The wine has an enormous sense of fiber or textural richness, with creamy and supple overtones, that helps it to glide clear over the palate. Its persistence and length can be counted in many long minutes." Robert Parker

    • "Lunare" Gewürztraminer Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

“Lunare” Gewürztraminer Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

Lunare Traminer Aromatico has a straw-yellow colour, its bouquet consists of complex aromas of roses, cloves and lychee. Its taste is very full-bodied with a slightly bitter finish typical of Traminer. This successful Gewürztraminer is excellent with liver pâté, white meat dishes and refined pasta dishes with sauces and creams. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, intense straw yellow with a green touch. Very intense and at the same time cool nose, opens with notes of cloves and thyme, then a lot of mango, nectarine, in the background of smoked meat. On the palate very complex aromas, a firework of taste impressions, has firm pressure, in the final very long and bone dry, stays on the palate for minutes." Falstaff

"Love the aromas of dried pineapple with candle-wax and beeswax undertones. Full-bodied with plenty of ripe fruit, as well as almonds and dried spices, such as cloves. Really spicy at the end." James Suckling

"Great varietal expression with blossom and turkish delight undertones. Unctuous with nutty flavours and a perfumed finish; opulent richness and length." Decanter

"The 2018 Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Lunare opens to a luminous off-gold color and substantial aromatic intensity. The bouquet is redolent of sweet peach, honey, candied almond, star jasmine and preserved lemon. This is a generous, full-bodied expression with lots of glycerin, richness and texture that is especially well played in this vintage. There is a subtle note of peachy-sweetness on the finish." • Terlaner Cuvée (Classico) Alto Adige DOC 2020
MAGNUM

Terlaner Cuvée (Classico) Alto Adige DOC 2020 · MAGNUM

You might serve it with a plate of smoked salmon." “Porphyr” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018

Dark, aromatic, full-bodied Lagrein Riserva. Scents of dark fruits, herbs, liquorice, toasted oak and minerals. Expansive and very generous on the palate, deep and endowed with wonderful minerality. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich ruby violet with black core. Intense and dense nose, lots of ripe elderberries and blackberries, dark chocolate. Grippy, firm tannin on the palate, gripping like an iron fist, herbaceous-spicy notes in the back." Falstaff

"Incredibly intense yet subtle damson-plum and forest-berry nose with delicate, spicy overtones. Then, a densely concentrated but very precise palate that's powerful, crisp and mineral all at once, the acidity lifting the super long finish beautifully. Great aging potential!" James Suckling

"Pouring from the bottle with an inky black and impenetrable appearance, the 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Porphyr paints a classic portrait of this indigenous northern Italian grape with its characteristic chiaroscuro delivery, with rich black fruit contrasted against raw primary intensity with tangy cherry and blackberry." “Winkl” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2020 · MAGNUM

Subtle tones of crushed mineral and sour grapefruit appear on the close." Robert Parker

“Gries” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018 · MAGNUM

Lagrein is normally not a very age-worthy grape, but this bottle will likely sail through to the 10-year mark." Robert Parker

    • "Quarz" Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2019

“Quarz” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2019

Named after the quartz inclusions in the volcanic porphyry rock of Terlan, the probably most famous Sauvignon Bianco in Italy lives up to its name. Filigree, delicately scented with grapefruit, peach, honey and green papaya. Quartz is taut and precise, with a fleshy, creamy texture, great depth and a wonderful mineral-salty finish. Must have and must taste! SUPERIORE.DE

"One of the great white wines of Italy. Grows at 300 to 550 m.a.s.l. on volcanic porphyry rock. Powerful, attractively exotic bouquet with bright gooseberries, mango, pink grapefruit, behind it the compelling mineral spiciness. In addition, lemongrass and herbaceous-ethereal notes. In the mouth juicy-substantial, but not overloaded, but deeply spicy, smoky, mineral-salty structure, again green-herbal hints in the mineral final. Can still improve." Weinwisser

"Sparkling light straw yellow with slight green nuances. A little reserved at the beginning, then opens up with notes of lemon balm and sage, in the background of elderflower. Very good fullness on the palate, creamy, tropical fruit notes in the back, very long finish." Falstaff

"Pretty nose of restrained grapefruit, citrus, sweet apple and vanilla. Chalky mineral and citrus on the spiced palate." Decanter

"Tons of wet-stone minerality and wild-herb character, plus black and white currants, make this a very complex sauvignon blanc. Somehow, it manages to be simultaneously highly structured and lively in an uncomplicated way. Very long, totally focused and fresh finish." James Suckling

"With fruit from high mountain vineyards, this is a brilliant wine, and I mean that both literally and figuratively. Luminous and bright, the 2019 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Quarz sparkles and shines with passion fruit, jasmine, tropical tones, wild sage and curry leaf. There's even a touch of freshly milled white pepper. This is Italian Sauvignon Blanc in all its glory, and, as always, Cantina Terlano shows a deft winemaking hand to guide the grape's natural aromas but also to render a most elegant interpretation. 2019 was an interesting growing season there, with cold, heavy rains in March, a very sunny and warmer May followed by a relatively cool June, and then a hotter summer, but it all turned out great for this vintage." The rare Riserva Vorberg from Pinot Bianco is open, elegant and expressive.

• "Nova Domus" Bianco Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018
MAGNUM

“Nova Domus” Bianco Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018 · MAGNUM

    • "Porphyr" Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018
MAGNUM

“Porphyr” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige Terlano DOC 2018 · MAGNUM

"Pouring from the bottle with an inky black and impenetrable appearance, the 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Porphyr paints a classic portrait of this indigenous northern Italian grape with its characteristic chiaroscuro delivery, with rich black fruit contrasted against raw primary intensity with tangy cherry and blackberry." About the winemakersCantina TerlanTrentino-Alto Adige
    Cantina Terlan

The South Tyrolean municipality of Terlan, about halfway between Merano and Bolzano, combines the advantages of an alpine and Mediterranean climate. The combination of basic microclimatic conditions and the particularities of the soil promotes complex, highly personal and extremely long-lasting wines with a typical regional character, which are well preserved in the Terlan winery. As early as 1893, 24 winegrowers founded the production, sales and marketing association in this small village in the Etsch Valley, thus laying the foundation stone for one of the first winegrowers' cooperatives in South Tyrol. Today, the cooperative already has 143 members who cultivate a total of 162 hectares of vineyards in a committed and environmentally friendly manner.

The south- and south-west-facing, sun-drenched vineyards of the comrades, which begin at the foot of the Tschöggelberg mountain range, extend from gentle hilly areas in the valley floor reaching up to 250 metres to steep and 900-metre-high mountain slopes. The soils are sandy, stony and permeable. The lower sites are particularly suitable for Lagrein, Cabernet and other heavy red wines. Pinot blanc and white varieties, on the other hand, can be found in the higher geographical areas. During the ripening period, warm days and cool nights guarantee a balance of sugar, acidity and aromas. Every single vine of the winegrowers belonging to the Verbund is carefully classified in order to be able to meticulously determine the production quantity.

As one of the four managing directors of the Terlan winery, cellarmaster Rudi Kofler has a keen sense for developing autochthonous and internationally significant, strong, well-structured white and red wines with DOC status, which have a rich and ripe fruit component, in the sanctum of the house. The development and marketing of the - around 70 percent white - drops takes place in three quality lines.

Unique in Italy is the Cantina Terlano Wine Archive, with more than 20,000 bottles, the oldest of which dates back to the year of its foundation and each year a special tranche as "rarità" in small editions of approx. 3,500 bottles. The cooperative, which was published in 2015 by the journal "wine industry" was named Italy's number one for the third time in a row in a cooperative test and its chairman Georg Höller also works in the same function for the Association of South Tyrolean Wine Cooperatives. In 2008, he merged with Andrian Winery, which, however, retains its own brand. SUPERIORE.DE

"The meticulous classification of the vineyards of the individual winegrowers reflects the intimate relationship of this cooperative to its production area. The perfect interpretation of the various terroirs is the result of the stable and sustained success of these mineral, progressive wines, which glide calmly through the years, as shown by the stocks of old bottles that Sebastian Stocker has put back since time immemorial.“Gambero Rosso
