“Il Nicchio” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021
Lodovico Antinori has always been the creative force behind Tenuta di Biserno in Bibbona. In 2018, however, he started a new project called Tenuta del Nicchio with his daughter Sophia Antinori. The winery has 12 hectares of vineyards near Bolgheri and two hectares near the village of Castagneto Carducci. Il Nicchio (debut vintage 2021) is by no means just Lodovico's "second wine". It is inspired by the magnificent St. Emilion Cheval Cheval Blanc and is mainly made from Cabernet Franc. This grape variety thrives on the complex soils of the region, which consist of silt and alluvial sand with a high clay content. Just a hint of estate Merlot is added to create a wine with a character all of its own.

After many years of identifying the best Merlot, Cabernet and Petit Verdot parcels within the boundaries of their Bolgheri vineyard, the Antinori family and then Lodovico Antinori, with the help of the famous OenologistMichel Rolland, discovered in the early 2000s that there was an even more special microclimate and terroir in the middle of this microclimate and terroir, the results of which surpassed those of the larger area. Everyone involved immediately realised that this unique character had to be vinified and highlighted separately - this was the birth of today's cult wine Lodovico and the Tenuta del Nicchio, which is now run by Lodovico and his daughter Sophia. Where Tuscan heritage meets personal vision: between Bolgheri and Bibbona, in a landscape of maritime coolness and chalky depths, Lodovico Antinori and his daughter Sophia have created the Tenuta del Nicchio – a place that lives not from the glamour of past prestige projects, but from a new stillness. Lodovico summarises his ambitions as follows: "The idea for the vineyard came about when I realised that rising temperatures made the classic southern exposure questionable – so I planted northwards.". A bold step that shows: Of course, Tuscany is also looking to the future.
Terroir & Climate – the stuff of great wines
The Tenuta's soils are interspersed with fossil sediments, ferruginous clay and limestone – a geological memory that lends the wines complexity and character. The vines benefit from the interplay of warm daytime heat and cool breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. Cabernet Franc in particular shows a precise, multi-layered side here – powerful, but never heavy.
Great wines – told with restraint
At the centre is the Lodovico, a broodingcuvée of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. It comes from the single vineyard Vigna Lodovico and is produced in a limited edition of just 10,000 bottles per year. Il Nicchio – another of the estate's references – emphasises the tension of Cabernet Franc in a purist manner, with a small proportion of Merlot for supple depth. With Le Due Ville del Nicchio, a fresh, modern line will be available from autumn 2025 – in tiny quantities and exclusively for selected markets.
People & Method
Sophia Antinori manages the project with aplomb and flair. At her side: Oenologist Helena Lindberg and Bordeaux consultant Michel Rolland. The wines are not vinified on site, but are matured in the winery of the neighbouring Tenuta di Biserno – a deliberate step that allows for maximum precision. This creates a silent connection between tradition and progress, between origin and signature. SUPERIORE.DE
