!["Botro dei Fichi" Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2024 (BIO)]()
“Botro dei Fichi” Vermentino Bolgheri DOC 2024 (BIO)
In the Tuscan dialect, "Botro" means a ditch, a natural channel that carries water away. "Dei Fichi" refers to the fig trees. The Botro dei Fichi is already mentioned in the cadastral records of the 18th-century Leopoldine Land Survey – a small depression on the estate that gave its name to a wine long before Vermentino was grown here. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 50 metres, facing west, on volcanic soil with a high proportion of scree. No sand dunes, no alluvial deposits – volcanic rock that lends the grape variety structure and minerality. Fermentation for 30 days in unglazed, raw concrete vats at a controlled temperature of 18°C, using indigenous yeasts. At least three months sur lies. No oak.

Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2023 (BIO)
The cellar at Tenuta Meraviglia is situated in a former quarry. This is not a metaphor, but an architectural choice: the architectural practice Studio Tori has created a winery here that is carved into the rock, thereby restoring the landscape rather than detracting from it. Form follows function follows conviction. This philosophy is carried through into the vineyard: 34 hectares in Bolgheri, planted almost exclusively with Cabernet Franc, on volcanic soils.

The name says it all: Meraviglia means nothing less than "miracle" or "remarkable". So it is no wonder that the Bulgheroni family has embarked on this project, as it fits seamlessly into a series of successful and renowned wineries, including Dievole in Chianti Classico, Le Colonne in Bolgheri and the two Montalcino gems Poggio Landi and Podere Brizio.
In the immediate vicinity of the Tuscan archipelago, in Bolgheri, the vineyards stretch picturesquely towards the sea. The 34 hectares of vineyards are planted exclusively with Cabernet Franc, supplemented by a few parcels of Vermentino, which benefits from both the sandy soil and the lava rock typical of the region, the so-called volcanic rocks of San Vincenzo. The different plots are harvested and vinified separately in order to emphasise the uniqueness of each individual site. The result is wines with an intense character that mature under picturesque conditions: cooled by the nearby sea, warmed by the sun and protected by the vineyards.
The perfect home for Cabernet Franc.
Cabernet Franc is the main grape variety grown on the estate. The conditions for this sensitive grape variety are picture-perfect here: the red sandy soils of the Val di Gori alternate with volcanic rock, the high proportion of stone and the south-west exposure are elements that allow the Cabernet Franc to mature into a fine and highly complex wine. The red wine is perfected in large 60-hectolitre barrels. The ideal choice, which Tenuta Meraviglia explains as follows: "For us, wooden barrels are tools for the micro-oxygenation of the wine, we don't want them to be the protagonists. The wine cellar merely accompanies the wine in its development and gives it time to find its own way, which is simply that of the territorial expression of the grape variety."
The future? Plan prudently & act sustainably!
This respectful approach is also reflected in the organic cultivation and so it is not surprising that Meraviglia pays particular attention to the topic of sustainability, and not just through the "Equalitas" sustainability process. The winery's new building, which is being constructed in the former Cariola quarry and will open in 2025, also remains ambitious. This disused quarry, where the stone rhyolite was originally mined, will be the new home of Meraviglia. This fantastic conversion fits in perfectly with the Bulgheroni family's credo, which has always been committed to regenerative and sustainable business practices. SUPERIORE.DE
