“Lianti” Rosso Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2023
Where the first rays of sunlight wander over Gallura's granite hills and the ancient tomb of Coddu 'Ecchju has looked eastwards for thousands of years, the young vines for Capicheras Lianti grow. The name itself tells of this mystical connection – liànti means "Levant", the East, where light is born every day. Just as the Nuragic builders once orientated their sacred sites towards this heavenly gate, this wine also turns its face towards the rising sun. From the youngest vineyards of the estate, where five to ten-year-old Carignano and Syrah vines thrive on weathered granite soils, an authentic Sardinian red wine is produced in its most original form. The hand-picked grapes macerate for three weeks in stainless steel tanks before the wine then matures for around six months in steel and cement.

!["Vign'Angena" Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG 2024]()
“Vign’Angena” Vermentino di Gallura Superiore DOCG 2024
It is a story of transformation, written in the granite slopes of Gallura. Vign'Angena – the "foreign vineyard" in the Sardinian dialect – bears a name full of poetic irony. What once began as rented land, whose grapes Capichera used in the early years of her Vermentino revolution, became the quintessence of her own excellence. Since the first vinification in 1994, this DOCG wine has embodied the purest soul of the Gallurese terroir. Where the rows of vines between Olbia and Palau breathe the salty winds of the Tyrrhenian Sea, Vermentino thrives on the same soils that once harboured Nuragic giants. The nearby tomb of Coddu 'Ecchju silently tells of thousands of years of Sardinian history – here, where Fabrizio and Mario Ragnedda realised their vision of a new Vermentino era. No wood touches these grapes; only cool stainless steel preserves the crystalline purity of the harvest, which does not begin until mid-August each year.

“Assajé" Rosso Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2022
It was 1997 when a dream began to take shape in the cellars of Capichera. After two decades in which the Ragnedda family had enchanted the wine world with their revolutionary Vermentino creations, they dared to take on a new challenge: could Gallura's ancient soil also produce red wines on a par with the greatness of their white siblings? The experiment was so convincing that it dictated its own name – assajé, Sardinian for "that's something". A legend was born out of modest hope. What began as pure Carignano developed into a masterful symbiosis of Sardinian originality and international elegance. Today, this pioneer among Gallurese red wines combines the island's finest indigenous grapes with a subtle hint of Syrah – a blend that unites twenty-year-old vines from Olbia and Palau to create a harmonious narrative. On the weathered granite sands, where salty sea breezes ripen the grapes for months, a wine of remarkable depth is created.

“Amistai” Rosato Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2024
In the quiet morning hours of Gallura, when the first light dances over the granite hills and the Sardinian Mediterranean scrub begins to awaken, something extraordinary emerges. Amistai – a name that means friendship and solidarity in the ancient language of Gallura – is Capichera's bold answer to the question: can a rosé achieve the same depth and complexity as the estate's legendary white wines? With the 2024 vintage, the traditional winery took a revolutionary step. Where the classic També epitomises the light elegance of Sardinian rosés, Amistai breaks all conventions. Made from the finest autochthonous grapes from selected vineyards, prolonged maceration and a vinification process that redefines boundaries – this rosé is Capichera's manifesto for a new era in Sardinian viticulture.

“Capichera” Vermentino Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2023
In 1980, a quiet revolution began in the granite hills of Gallura. What began as the bold vision of two young brothers was to change the Sardinian wine world forever: The first Vermentino in the world to undergo partial ageing in French barriques. Fabrizio and Mario Ragnedda dared to do the unthinkable – they believed that their beloved Vermentino could be on a par with the great international white wines. The name Capichera itself tells of ancient greatness: Caput erat – "it was the capital" – the Latin reminder of the historical importance of these lands belonging to the Ragnedda family. Here, where granite soils write Sardinian history and the sea breezes aerate the vines, the white flagship of a winery that made history has been produced for over four decades. The Vermentino ferments for four weeks in cool stainless steel before finding its way into new and used barriques.

!["VT vendemmia tardiva" Bianco Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2023]()
“VT vendemmia tardiva” Bianco Isola dei Nuraghi IGT 2023
When the macchia mediterranea is immersed in autumnal stillness and the first dew wets the Sardinian hills, one of the boldest stories of modern viticulture begins. At the end of September, when all other harvests had long since finished, the Ragnedda brothers waited for a few more precious weeks. Their vision at the time: to complete the first Sardinian white wine in history in French barriques. A venture that changed Sardinia's wine landscape forever. The VT – vendemmia tardiva – is both Capichera's greatest challenge and proudest achievement. Each grape waits until it is saturated with sugar and flavour components that only late October can give. What begins as a simple Vermentino is transformed into pure magic through this patient maturation and four months in fine barriques. This wine only finds its way into the world two years after the harvest – the time it needs to reveal its unmistakable, powerful character.

Between the barren granite cliffs of Gallura, surrounded by the salty breath of the Tyrrhenian Sea, lies Capichera – a winery that has given Sardinia's viticulture a new face. Here, in the rugged north of the island, the light sets the pace: glistening during the day, golden in the evening. In this landscape, where myrtle, rosemary and broom flavour the air, the vines are deeply rooted in mineral soils. Cool nights, hot days and constant winds create a climate that gives the grapes a distinctive flavour, strength and yet elegant finesse.
Vermentino? Rethought!
In the 1970s, the Ragnedda family began to redefine the potential of Vermentino. Until then, the variety was primarily known as an uncomplicated white wine. Capichera was the first winery to age it as a single variety in barriques, proving that Vermentino can have depth, structure and ageing potential. This innovation made Capichera a pioneer in the region and opened the doors to an international audience for Sardinian white wine.
Tradition & Future
Today, the winery is run by Fabrizio and Mario Ragnedda, who are continuing their family's legacy with passion and vision. Their ancestors were already cultivating vineyards in the north of Sardinia in the 1920s. In the 1970s, Fabrizio and Mario recognised the untapped potential of Vermentino and took the step that would make the Capichera name world-famous. Fabrizio is still largely responsible for oenology today, while Mario is in charge of the vineyards, strategic direction and international positioning. Together, they developed the family estate from ten hectares to around sixty hectares of vineyards, always with an uncompromising focus on impressive quality.
Where granite meets light
The vineyards of Capichera are as characteristic as they are rare. They are located in the hills of Gallura, surrounded by granite formations that store heat and at the same time provide minerality. The subsoil consists almost exclusively of weathered granite, interspersed with sand and clay. A soil that gives the wines their distinctive freshness, saltiness and longevity. The vines benefit from excellent exposure and constant breezes, which keep the grapes healthy and prolong the ripening process. Sustainability, low yields and hand-picking are self-evident principles that bring quality to the glass.
A concise portfolio
At the centre of the range is Vermentino in various expressions: from clear, mineral entry-level wines to the great icons aged in wood, which achieve the highest international ratings and are among the most expensive white wines in Italy. The portfolio is complemented by elegant interpretations of Carignano, Syrah and other varieties that always breathe Sardinian identity. Each wine bears Capichera's signature: precision, depth, an unmistakable Mediterranean elegance and the ambition to constantly set new standards.
When Capichera presented the first barrique-aged Vermentino in the 1980s, the wine scene initially reacted with astonishment and sometimes scepticism. Today, this step is considered a milestone. "We wanted to show that Vermentino can do more than anyone ever thought it could," say the Ragnedda brothers. They have undoubtedly succeeded, as their wines prove this claim with every new vintage.
