The Prunotto Winery, located on the outskirts of Alba, was founded in 1904 by Alfredo Prunotto - at that time still under the name Cantina Sociale Vini delle Langhe - and is thus one of the most traditional wineries in Piedmont. In 1923, after bankruptcy, Cavaliere Prunotto took over the company, which at that time was still a cooperative and had no vineyards of its own, and this helped it to achieve its breakthrough. After Beppe Colla had taken over the estate in 1956, he brought it to international fame with his determined quality thinking. Not only did he considerably reduce the maceration period and the duration of barrel ageing, but in 1961 he also indicated the individual vineyards on the label for the first time as a trend-setter for other Piedmontese winegrowers. Since 1994 Prunotto has been fully owned by Marchesi Antinori. The family, one of the great followers of the Barbera grape, leads the estate into the future with great passion and attention.
The winery is managed by Albiera Antinori, the oldest daughter of Marchese Piero Antinori. The Vice-President of the Italian wine dynasty is supported in her work by the top-class oenologist Gianluca Torrengo, who composes typical local wines with a distinctive personality in the cellar. Since the Marchesi Antinori had initially acquired a majority stake in the company in 1989, things have progressed rapidly: the vineyard hills in favourable locations have been gradually extended. Both in the vineyard and in the cellar the most modern knowledge is used and the most innovative techniques are applied. The long-lived wines are supposed to radiate their outstanding characteristics - personality, kindness and open-minded spirit.
Prunotto's wide range includes all the important grape varieties of the region and is characterised every year by a high degree of reliability and a reasonable price/performance ratio. All wines, starting with the base wine Barbera d'From Asti Fiulòt to the splendid Barolo Bussia, from the famous Monforte site, the wines of this region show their great class. (superiore.de)
