    • "Puer Apuliae" Nero di Troia Castel del Monte DOC 2013

“Puer Apuliae” Nero di Troia Castel del Monte DOC 2013

Puer Apuliae (son of Puglia) is what the De Coratos call their elegant and high quality drop of 100% Nero di Troia. The flagship in the cellar is a delight with its balsamic scent, where there is room for spices, plums, pickled nuts and black sauces. The taste is very concentrated and yet juicy, of great matter and density, with a long finish with a nice hint of cranberries and tobacco. SUPERIORE.DE

"There's a focused sharpness to the nose, with aromas of red currant, cranberry and underripe red plum melding with shades of green tobacco and purple flowers. This is tense and linear on the palate, offering flavors tart red berries and peppery spice riding on a roaring river of acidity. Medium-grained, gripping tannins frame it all." Wine Enthusiast

    About the winemakers
    Rivera
    Puglia
    Rivera

Founded during the Second World War by Sebastiano de Corato, today managed by his son Carlo and now in the third generation supported by his sons Sebastiano and Marco, the family business Rivera has long been a solid and trustworthy address both in the DOC Castel del Monte and throughout Puglia. Giuseppe de Corato had already started planting vines and olive trees around 1900. Based in Andria, the winery now has wonderful vineyards cultivated in accordance with the principles of sustainable agriculture, with the Kordon system of cone pruning and the Guyot system. The stock density is high, the vines deliver low yields. The pure and blended wines produced in the winery with modern vinification techniques, mostly from local grapes, are of excellent quality and available on the market at fair prices.

In the Torre di Bocca and Coppa vineyards, white and red varieties grow on deep limestone and tuff soils at altitudes of up to 200 to 230 metres above sea level. The red wines coming from these vineyards are of impressive elegance and structure. In the immediate vicinity of Frederick II's hunting lodge, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon on Karst thrive in the coolest zone of Puglia on the rocky Murgia plateau in the Lama di Corvo vineyard at an altitude of over 300 metres. The white drops are characterized by a strong acidic freshness, an expressive aroma and fine minerality. The Rivera winery owns a total of 75 hectares of land. The remaining grape requirements for the almost 25 wines and the annual production of more than one million bottles are covered by a few trustworthy suppliers.

In addition to the old winery, built towards the end of the 19th century, a new building wing with glazed and fully temperature-controlled concrete tanks was built in the 1960s. More than 400 barriques and botti made of French and Slavonian oak with a capacity of 3,000 and 5,500 litres respectively are stored in two underground barrel cellars of the winery, which is mainly run on solar energy. The oenologist Leonardo Palumbo, supported by the renowned consultant Attilio Scienza, watches conscientiously over the production processes of the exemplary wines. The Corato family has always cultivated the image of the Castel del Monte Denomination and continues to promote the autochthonous grape varieties of Puglia with all its strength. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rivera is one of the most important wineries in Puglia in terms of image and quality. I was able to taste through two vintages of recent releases and was delighted by the two top-shelf wines (the Puer Apuliae and Il Falcone Riserva) from the 2009 vintage. To my palate, these are two of the finest wines ever made by Rivera. Rivera has overwhelmingly mastered the difficult art of making great wine from the finicky Nero di Troia variety. Because of its thin skin, the grape often suffers from mold and downey mildew. But Rivera has gained experience over the years to lessen the impact of these issues."Robert Parker
