!["Majé" Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2025 (BIO)]()
“Majé" Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2025 (BIO)
The Riviera Ligure di Ponente is not an easy landscape. There is little space between the sea and the Alps – the vineyards climb up terraces of dry stone walls, the slopes are steep, the paths winding, the harvest almost exclusively by hand. It was in this solitude that Riccardo Bruna began bottling his family's Pigato in 1970 – a bold decision at the time for a grape variety that hardly anyone knew. Majé is Bruna's most accessible Pigato: from the iron-rich, argillaceous soils around Ortovero and Ranzo, 200 to 300 metres above sea level, just 20 kilometres from the coast. Gentle pressing, fermentation and ageing in steel – the result is the character of this terroir in its most direct form.

!["Burdigai" Rosato Colline Savonesi IGT 2023 (BIO)]()
“Burdigai” Rosato Colline Savonesi IGT 2023 (BIO)
"Burdigai" is Ligurian dialect and means shrubs of the Mediterranean maquis. From a small and isolated terrace facing west, surrounded by Mediterranean shrubs, comes this truly original Rosato, which should not actually exist. Because the grape variety is unknown, it is alternatively called "Franseise" because it apparently comes from the south of France and not even the owners know the exact origin and age, nor do they know who planted the vines there in the first place. Nevertheless, the vines have been cultivated and cared for over decades and at some point the family council decided to press an independent rosé from them.

![Vermentino Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2025 (BIO)]()
Vermentino Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2025 (BIO)
In Liguria, the question of whether Pigato and Vermentino are the same grape variety is answered with a Ligurian shoulder movement. Bruna cultivates both, appreciates both and gives each its own space. Vermentino grows in Valle Arroscia on loose, stony soil made from weathered sedimentary rock – lighter and more permeable than the Pigato plots, aromatic earlier, with a characteristic saltiness. 100% Vermentino, hand-picked, gentle pressing, fermentation in steel at a controlled temperature, short bottle ageing.

“Burdigai” Rosato Colline Savonesi IGT 2025 (BIO)
Burdigai is the Ligurian dialect for the shrubs of the Mediterranean maquis – the fragrant, wild vegetation that occupies every free spot in western Liguria that is not cultivated by man. This small, isolated terrace facing west is surrounded by it – and it is here that a grape variety grows that nobody can fully explain. It is alternatively called "Franseise" because it apparently originates from the south of France. Nobody knows who planted the vines. Nobody knows how old they are. Not even the Bruna family knows their exact origin. Nevertheless, the vines have been cultivated and cared for over decades – out of that instinctive respect for old vines that good winegrowers never give up. At some point, the family council decided to press an independent rosé from them.

!["Le Russeghine" Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2023 (BIO)]()
“Le Russeghine” Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2023 (BIO)
The grapes come mainly from the historic Russeghine vineyard above the town of Ranzo Borgo. The character of the Pigato here is of particular depth and minerality, which is due to the exceptional terroir and the long maturation on the fine lees. Bright straw yellow in colour with light green reflections. Fragrant nose of herbs, yellow fruit and traces of pine resin. Full and long-lasting flavour with beautiful spiciness and aromas of citrus and almond, then again this beguiling, deep minerality at the end. SUPERIORE.DE

!["u Baccan" Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2022 (BIO)]()
“u Baccan” Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2022 (BIO)
The Pigato grape has great ageing and maturation potential, especially in Liguria. U Baccan (Ligurian: the head) comes mainly from vines in the Russeghine vineyard, which are over 50 years old, produce a very low yield and give it enormous complexity. Intense straw yellow in colour with bright golden-green reflections. The bouquet is impressively pure with beguiling hints of sage, thyme, peach, mango, cedar bark, acacia honey and silica. Enveloping, balsamic and mineral on the palate, with a hint of salty almond and candied citrus fruit on the long, vibrant final. A Pigato in a class of its own in the finest Riserva quality. !["u Baccan" Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2024 (BIO)]()
“u Baccan” Pigato Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC 2024 (BIO)
Riccardo Bruna was U Baccan – the boss, the patron, the head. That's what the people in Ranzo called him. He was the one who started bottling his family's pigato in 1970, when nobody else was doing it. He was the one who managed the terraces, repaired the walls and brought up the daughters. Francesca gave up her career as an engineer, Annamaria as a pharmacist – both returned to continue running the estate. The estate bears his name, this wine bears his nickname. The grapes for the U Baccan come exclusively from the oldest plots above Ranzo – vines over fifty years old, on soils with iron oxide and manganese inclusions, which give the soil its characteristic red colour and the wine its depth. The result, says Ian d'Agata in "Native Wine Grapes of Italy", is the paradigmatic Pigato of all: balsamic and rich. Fermentation in steel, ageing in large wooden barrels – the wood as a resting pole, not as a flavour carrier. The wine opens slowly, needs air and time.

Riccardo Bruna's daughters Francesca and Annamaria went to Genoa to study, convinced that engineering and pharmaceutical chemistry were their future. However, it didn't take too long for them to be convinced otherwise and they were drawn back to the vineyards of their beautiful Ligurian homeland. Their father's deep-rooted passion for Ligurian wine could not simply pass the sisters by without leaving a trace.
"My father considered himself a traditionalist, but I knew that he was actually a revolutionary," says Francesca Bruna, who today successfully runs the Bruna family winery together with her husband Roberto. Her father Riccardo did indeed have revolutionary views when it came to Ligurian viticulture and was one of the first winegrowers to devote his heart and soul to the cultivation of the Pigato grape - a white, late-ripening grape variety related to Vermentino.
Thanks to Riccardo Bruna's intuition and enthusiasm, he began to restore and sustainably cultivate the historic family vineyards in Ranzo in the early 1970s. From the very beginning, Riccardo Bruna's only possible way of harvesting the best grapes and producing better and better wines every year was to do without any herbicides or synthetic products. This approach was not particularly common at the time, which meant that the winery was able to clearly stand out from the competition.
Bold decisions were therefore a constant part of the winery's working philosophy and the following generation has also remained true to this: In addition to the organic and natural cultivation of the vines, fermentation in the cellar takes place with indigenous yeasts. Pure yeasts are avoided without exception and the wines mature for a long time on the noble indigenous yeasts. All vineyards have been certified organic since the 2022 vintage.
"This has always been our way of working with Pigato grapes," says Francesca, who is now one of the leading quality producers in Liguria. The typical characteristics of the grape variety and Riccardo's personality should remain unmistakable in their own wines, which Francesca and Roberto have undoubtedly succeeded in doing. In collaboration with OenologistValter Bonetti, they produce not only tasty Pigato wines but also an outstanding Vermentino and harmonious red wine cuvées from the Rossese, Granaccia, Syrah and Barbera grape varieties.
Today, eight hectares of vineyards thrive on Ligurian stone-walled terraces between the municipalities of Ortovero and Ranzo, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, olive trees and oaks. The dry, mild and very windy climate allows the vines to be cultivated close to nature, surrounded by the endless horizon of the western Mediterranean and the enchanting green landscape of the Ligurian Alps. The Bruna winery represents Liguria's unique beauty and diversity, which has long been preserved by the family of the same name. SUPERIORE.DE
