      Barolo DOCG 2016

A wonderful creature is the Barolo 2016 by Batasiolo. Sophisticated scent of leather and liquorice, dried flowers and undergrowth. Straightforward, the round, fragrant taste follows its way into the persistent final. SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a solid Barolo with strawberry, meat, walnut and tar aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with rich fruit and tannins. Muscular, yet there’s elegance and polish to it at the same time." James Suckling

"Herbal and red fruit nose. Palate has a soft sweetness at the front which opens into warm earth, spices and autumnal notes. Lovely tannins. Long finish." Decanter

      Barolo “Paesi Tuoi” DOCG 2016

Barolo Paesi Tuoi was named after the novel by Cesare Pavese "Among Peasants" from 1941. Wide, warm scent of sour cherries, leather and mint. The expressive taste harmoniously engaging with silky tannins. A cleanly vinified Barolo with potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark glowing ruby red. In the nose of rich cherry and rich strawberry, supported by a pinch of red pepper and some forest fruit. Balanced and juicy on the palate, with smooth tannin and clear fruit, beautiful length, harmonious finish." Falstaff

    • Barolo DOCG 2016 (blue label)

      Barolo DOCG 2016 (blue label)

The Nebbiolo grapes of Matteo's entry Barolo come from his three vineyards Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Verduno. Bright garnet red. Precisely coordinated bouquet of wild berries, rose petals and beautiful herbal spice. On the palate then a bright acidity, perfectly integrated tannins and a beautifully worked out primary fruit. Already very accessible at a young age, it will nevertheless increase in complexity over the years. Excellent value! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid to deep ruby with bricky rim. Deep, earthy cherry nose with a hint of Moroccan leather. Supple elegant fruit palate with quite a bit of tannin, but well balanced." Jancis Robinson

"The genial Matteo Ascheri produces wines from various parts of Piedmont, and most of the Barolos come from Serralunga, such as this communal blend. It's deep in colour, with dense cherry, mocha and liquorice aromas. It's ripe and concentrated with bold, ripe tannins that give force and persistence. The sumptuous fruit is balanced by ample spiciness and pep. Long." Decanter

"Intensely fragrant, this has enticing aromas of graphite, chopped mint, forest berry and new leather that practically leap out of the glass. Mirroring the nose, the chewy, vibrant palate delivers raspberry compote, mature black cherry, cinnamon and star anise along with an earthy hint of game. Firm tannins and fresh acidity keep balanced." Wine Enthusiast

"The Ascheri 2016 Barolo delivers a classic interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, albeit with a plump and fruit-forward slant. The wine opens to dried cherries and blackberries with balanced background tones of spice, tar, leather and ash. These ethereal tones add to the elegance and depth of the wine. The character of this Barolo is dark and solid, making for an ideal medium to long-term proposition. When the wine is ready to drink five years or more down the line, I'd suggest a pairing with a heavier pasta dishes or risotto with wild porcini mushrooms." Robert Parker

Barolo del Comune del Barolo “Essenze” DOCG 2015

Barolo Essence is made up of a collection of grapes from six different vineyards: Bussia in Monforte, Annunziata in La Morra, Ravera in Novello, La Volta in Barolo, Scarrone in Castiglione Falletto and Gianetto in Serralunga. The wine has a flawless ruby red colour and a fragrance with a variety of liquorice and toasted notes. The taste is sovereign and opulent with noble tannin in the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sumptuous cherry and raspberry nose. Rich and voluptuous, with fine concentration and explosive fruit. Ripe but not jammy, with plenty of spice and vigour; forward but has sufficient structure to age. One for the hedonists!" Decanter

"Intense aromas of dark fruit and hints of wood, walnut and chocolate. Yet, it remains subtle and focused. Full-bodied, very dense and rich with a dusty and chewy tannin mouthfeel and a long, flavorful finish. Very attractive. Drink from 2022." James Suckling

      Barolo “Cascina Nuova” DOCG 2016

Bright ruby garnet, intense bouquet with notes of liquorice and tar, then rose and cherry. On the palate with very fine tannins, spicy, delicate and at the same time very rich and clear, long and balsamic in the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Youthful garnet; aromas of fresh morel cherry, strawberry jam and thyme. Medium-bodied with good to very good concentration. Low-key style of Barolo. Very good acidity, good persistence, well integrated oak notes and medium-weight tannins that are nicely balanced." Forbes

"Lustrous mid ruby. Signature depth of fruit combined with finesse. Spice and minerals, cherry and raspberry with a suggestion of liquorice. There is a certain leggerezza but at the same time profound and deep but without being heavy. Fine, firm long grainy tannins clinging to the fruit. Composed energy. Easily one of the best-buy wines of the vintage." Jancis Robinson

"Cogno's 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and expressive on the palate, the 2016 has a touch more mid-palate sweetness and texture than in the past, when the wine has been more nervous in feel. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise all open up effortlessly. Silky tannins add to its considerable immediacy and appeal. This is such a pretty wine in its peer group and also a terrific example of how attractive more modestly priced Barolos are in 2016." Vinous

"Of the four Elvio Cogno Baroli out on the market now, this wine is the most immediate and accessible of the bunch. Production is an ample 20,000 bottles. The 2016 Barolo Cascina Nuova is a terrific wine with impeccable balance. The bouquet offers dark fruit aromas, licorice, smoke, tar and spice. These aromatic pieces slide together with precision to create an intriguing and multifaceted puzzle. It shows good fruit weight and concentration, reinforced by firm tannins, freshness and a silky mouthfeel. This is a terrific go-to Barolo from a classic vintage." Robert Parker

"Rose, woodland berry and baking spice shape the nose along with crushed mint notes on this fragrant red. The savory, polished palate boasts succulent raspberry, ripe strawberry and white pepper before taut tannins and bright acidity reveal a firm, elegant structure. Star anise lingers on the finish." "Lustrous mid ruby. Freshness and lift on the nose and with plenty of depth. Just a touch of oak. Lush and fresh palate with a polished, grainy layer of tannins. A wine to drink gallons of." Jancis Robinson

"The 2016 Barolo is bright, fresh and full of life. Medium in body and perfumed, the straight Barolo will give readers a good idea of the direction the estate is headed in. Light on its feet and nuanced, with good energy, the 2016 is quite attractive. But more than that, it points to a very bright future here." Vinous

"This red is fresh, elegant and underscored by a solid tannic structure. A bit compact midpalate, compressing the black cherry, blackberry, iron, tobacco and spice flavors. Sleek and long, with terrific balance." Wine Spectator

"The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright Technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine's all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d'Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass." Robert Parker

"Plums, cured meat and white truffles. Pretty aromas. Full-bodied with chewy, ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish. It’s very structured with lots of ripe tannins and ripe fruit that envelop the phenolics. Solid and real. Give it time to soften and come together. Try after 2023." James Suckling

      Barolo “San Giuseppe” DOCG 2016

Dark garnet red with beautiful reflections. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, eucalyptus, tobacco and spices. A wonderfully balanced wine of fruit, fine acidity and polished tannin. For us one of the best representatives of its vintage! SUPERIORE.DE

"This is a proprietary blend of Nebbiolo made by Pecchenino. The 2016 Barolo San Giuseppe is a blend of fruit from three crus. It breaks down as 35% from Le Coste di Monforte, 15% from Bussia and 50% from Ravera in Monforte. There is a sultry theme here (like we saw in the Barolo Bussia) with dark fruit, pressed blackberry, black licorice and spice. This winery tends to experiment with long skin maceration times at warm temperatures. These techniques result in the density and sheer fruit weight you get here." Robert Parker

"Intense dark ruby red with a sparkling core. Deep and multi-layered nose of dark blackberries, ripe Amarena cherries, with a slight reverberation of gunpowder. It spreads beautifully on the palate, has well integrated acidity and finely meshed tannin, remains long and fruity in the finale." Falstaff

"The 2015 Barolo Albe is a soft, open-knit wine that will drink well upon release. Bright and lifted, with plenty of red cherry fruit and floral notes, the Albe captures the essence of the Vajra house style nicely. This is a terrific entry-level Barolo, not to mention one of the finest values in Piedmont." VINOUS

"Aromas of mature dark-skinned berries and brown baking spices fill the glass along with a whiff of new leather. Medium bodied and taut, the chewy palate offers dried black cherry, cranberry, blood orange and star anise alongside tightly knit, dusty tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Pretty, featuring rose, cherry, raspberry and mint flavors, with a touch of mineral. Supple, harmonious and elegant, offering a long finish. The aftertaste is tinged with orange peel and tobacco notes." Wine Spectator

"This Barolo offers a more immediate approach, with lots of dark berry followed by spice, tilled earth and black truffle. The 2015 Barolo Albe pours to a medium dark color and lays out a mid-weight texture, with bright primary fruit that is expertly woven into the wine. It exposes clearly etched veins of acidity and some determinedly firm tannins. Despite the Albe's accessible personality, I recommend that you wait a few more years before popping the cork." "Vajra's Barolo Albe is bright, floral and wonderfully lifted in 2016. Sweet tobacco, cedar, blood orange, mint, licorice, dried red cherry and sage give the 2016 lovely savory brightness to match its mid-weight structure. Gracious and light on its feet, the Albe has so much to offer." Vinous

"Such a delicious expression of the balanced and drinkable 2016 harvest with fresh red cherries, strawberries and rose perfume. The palate has bright, fine and fleshy texture with a super fine, chalky and plush delivery of ripe, supple and concentrated cherries. So complete." James Suckling

"If you were to consider the entire portfolio of wines made in the Barolo appellation, this wine always stands in its own little corner. Albe is a brand on its own, and it represents one of the most versatile, accessible and well-priced Baroli to emerge from the appellation. The G.D. Vajra 2016 Barolo Albe sets off on the right foot, offering forthcoming intensity with forest fruit, wild cherry, crushed stone and blue flowers. Winemaking is straightforward in stainless steel, and the wine finishes in Slavonian oak casks." Robert Parker

"Elegant and expressive, this red evokes cherry, raspberry and floral notes, aligned to a refined structure. This is balanced and leaves an aftertaste of fruit, tobacco and iron." Wine Spectator

    Things to know aboutBarolo
    Barolo

The small town of Barolo, 15 kilometres south-west of Alba, has long since achieved world fame. The reason for this is the truly large and colour-intensive DOCG red wine of the same name. Barolo is not only regarded as the most important Italian appellation, but is also one of the most long-lived red wines of all.

Barolo is produced in the towns of Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra, Monforte d.Alba and Serralunga d.Alba. Like his also very well known "brother" Barbaresco, it is made from the Nebbiolo grape, which ripens in favourable years due to the autumnal fog of Tanaro. Barolo and La Morra generally produce more fruity and spicy wines than the other three towns. In Castiglione Falletto, Montforte d.Alba and Serralunga d.Alba the plants are richer in tannins and alcohol. All good locations of the Barolo DOCG are located in a small area of mostly gentle, sometimes steep slopes. SUPERIORE.DE
