Barolo DOCG 2019 (blue label)
The Nebbiolo grapes of Matteo's entry-level Barolo come from his three vineyards Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra and Verduno. Bright garnet red. Precisely balanced bouquet of wild berries, rose petals and beautiful herbal spice. On the palate, bright acidity, perfectly integrated tannins and a beautifully developed primary fruit. Already very accessible when young, it will nevertheless increase in complexity with the years. Excellent value! SUPERIORE.DE
"The Ascheri 2019 Barolo with its fun retro label shows classic Nebbiolo aromas with red currant, iris, rusty nail and liquorice. On the palate, the wine is very pleasing even at this young stage thanks to its fresh acidity and integrated tannins. This is a nice bottle for medium-term consumption. The fruit comes from La Morra, Verduno and Serralunga d'Alba." Wine Advocate

Barolo “San Giuseppe” DOCG 2018
Dark garnet red with beautiful reflections. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, eucalyptus, tobacco and spices. A wonderfully balanced wine of fruit, fine acidity and polished tannin. For us, one of the best representatives of its vintage! SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Barolo San Giuseppe is bright and nicely aromatic with dried raspberry, candied cherry, violet and powdery earth. This medium-bodied Barolo ends with smoothness and finely integrated tannins that give an extra push in terms of mouthfeel and finish." Wine Advocate
"The 2018 Barolo San Giuseppe is a very pretty, alluring Barolo. Crushed red berry fruit, cedar, dried cherry, tobacco and crushed autumn leaves lend notable aromatic presence. There's good depth to the 2018, but the slightly forward flavor profile leads me to believe near and medium-term drinking is best." Vinous
"This silky Barolo is marked by macerated cherry, strawberry, rose hip and a hint of tamarind. The tannins are interwoven so well, this is almost seamless. Very drinkable now, yet the compact finish suggests waiting a few years. Fine length." Wine Spectator
"Lots of forest floor and mild spice to the dried-cherry notes on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with a tight, focused core of dried red fruit and an underlay of very fine tannins. Tight finish. Tasty and racy. The tannins pull on the finish for now. Give it until 2024 to unwind a little." James Suckling

Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba DOCG 2019
Clerico's Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba shows all the allure of which this high altitude site is capable and Domenico Clerico's team interprets this vintage with elegance and intensity. Sweet macerated cherry, mint, spices, orange peel and raspberries linger on the lingering, vibrant and agile finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Full of leafy lightness and focused on cherry pit and redcurrant fruit, the wine is precise and elegant rather than powerful, with almost crisp acidity and velvety tannins. The finish is a little grimmer, though not rustic." Decanter
"Firm and quite deep, slightly nutty, tobacco and woody aroma of ripe red and black berries with leathery nuances and a hint of dried tomatoes. Firmly knit, tart juicy ripe fruit with flavours reminiscent of soy sauce, some smoke, coffee and herbal nuances, slightly mushroomy on the palate, some pepper, present ripe tannin and some bite, salt and a little salty lemon in the background, a hint of bacon, hints of dark chocolate, still very young, very good firm tart finish with grip. Has time." Wein-plus
"This red wine offers an appealing balance of cherry, currant, tar, eucalyptus and spice aromas with a solid, sinewy structure. Finishes with a blend of ripe fruit and spicy elements." Wine Spectator
"Sparkling ruby garnet, delicate lightening at the edges. Fragrant, playful nose, raspberries and strawberries, some cloves and discreet herbal spice. Structured and precise on the palate, starts with lots of juice, builds pressure, vibrant acidity, ripe tannin, spicy final." Falstaff
"A bright and primary red with aromas and flavours of cut strawberries, citrus and stones. Medium body. Fine tannins and a fresh finish. Spicy. Crushed stones. Juicy and nicely chewy. Transparent. Drinkable after 2026." James Suckling
"The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d'Alba takes a few minutes to open up before offering that combination of dark berry fruit and rusty minerality that gives this part of the appellation power and structure." Wine Advocate

Barolo DOCG 2019
"Our Barolo (Classico) has been a successful synthesis of the different characteristics of the Massolino vineyards for over 70 years. Thanks to traditional ageing in large Slavonian oak barrels, we preserve its pure and unadulterated identity and its complex aromas." Franco Massolino
Traditionally vinified Barolo from the best vineyard sites of the estate. Strong garnet red. Complex, spicy bouquet of liquorice, tobacco, dried flowers, violets and damp leaves. In the mouth very emphatic, firm and full-bodied. Currently, still noticeable, rubust tannins flank its racy and forward-driven nature. Finishes with a fine sweetness, elegant and long. The already undisputed high level will continue to develop in full beauty over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. A subtle, lifted aroma of cherries and cranberries dabbed with spicy oak notes and a hint of orange peel. Juicy, vibrant cherry fruit on the palate with long, grippy tannins on the finish. Fresh, long and elegant." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Barolo is a very serious wine. harvestlooking for an uncomplicated, entry-level Barolo will not find it here. Bright and crackling with tannin, the 2019 will need at least a couple of years to fully develop. Crushed rocks, red/purple fruits and dried flowers emerge with some coaxing, but this is truly a wine for the cellar." Vinous
"Lots of lavender, raspberry and orange blossom aromas follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and a polished finish. Lovely drive and balance. Clear and refined." James Suckling
"In the light cream-colored label, the 2019 Barolo is elegant and contained, showing a very focused and linear style that makes a great impression and awakens the senses. There is wild cherry, blue flower and crushes stone backed by balanced freshness and tannins." Wine Advocate

Barolo “Cascina Nuova” DOCG 2018
Bright ruby garnet. Supple and expressive on the palate with sweet red cherries, blood orange, mint, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise. Very fine tannins on the palate, spicy, delicate and at the same time very rich and clear, long and balsamic on the final. Every year, Cascina Nuova is a prime example that excellent Barolos can be produced at moderate prices. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling garnet red. Slightly smoky on the nose at first, then of rich wild berries and ripe plums, a touch of forest floor in the aftertaste. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with lots of fruit, fine-grained tannin, long and spicy finish." Falstaff
"Lustrous mid ruby. Floral and precise raspberry nose underpinned by concentrated sour cherry. Real finesse on the nose. Full, perfectly ripe sour-cherry palate. Crunchy tannins reined in by the fruit on the finish. Truly fine." Jancis Robinson
"Enticing aromas of red berries, citrus fruit and flowers follow through to a bright, silky palate with medium body and very fine tannins. Lacks a bit of body this year, but it’s bright, balanced and well focused." James Suckling
"The profile is lighter and fresher, with rose, dry mushrooms, leafy lightness, strawberry fruit and tar. The attack is all strawberry and pomegranate, with ripe and velvety tannins and brilliant acidity. It seems to be brief but instead is just light, precise and tasty." Decanter
"The 2018 Barolo Cascina Nuova is fine-tuned with plenty of wild berry, cassis, grilled herb and crushed stone. The aromas are quite classic for Nebbiolo, but what stands out here is the directness and freshness with which they are delivered. The tannins are tucked carefully inside the smooth, silky character of this elegant wine." Wine Advocate
"The immediacy and cleanliness of Elvio Cogno for a Barolo of freshness, from the new vineyards. Strawberry tree on the nose, with notes of rosehip and chinotto, closed by hints of wild mint. Sip with iodine-brackish tannins, fruity and mentholated return." Luca Gardini

"Beguiling bouquet of cherries, dried flowers and herbs; the attack is juicy with perfectly integrated tannins, incisive acidity and a long final." Vinum
"Brilliant medium ruby red with orange reflections. Still a little closed and with spicy, savoury notes. Serious and complex, it opens slowly to red fruits with a hint of black pepper, but more mineral than fruity or sweet. Still very compact and closed on the palate. Really elegant and refreshing, with firm tannins accompanying the fresh fruit on the finish. Serious stuff." Jancis Robinson
"The 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova is bright, exuberant and beautifully lifted, straight out of the gate. Crushed flowers, dried herbs, sweet red cherries, cinnamon, spices and sweets rise from the glass. Bright and medium-bodied, with plenty of verve, the 2019 is an absolute delight. I really like its energy. It also handles the incisive Ravera tannins well." Vinous
"Balanced and harmonious, this red wine offers aromas of cherries, raspberries, spices, minerals and chocolate supported by a backbone of refined tannins. It becomes even more concentrated in the long, mineral and spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The 2019 Cascina Nuova is a little reductive at first, but then opens up to reveal the freshness of lemon leaves, red currants and pomegranate, and the aromatic depth of lemon thyme. The attack is very elegant, almost silky at first, then a little dusty on the finish with slight extraction. Possibly not too concentrated, but impressively good and graceful." Decanter
"Attractive primary aromas of crushed strawberries and stones follow through to a full body with fine and polished tannins and a lovely fresh finish. Lively is a good word to describe this wine overall. Best after 2026." James Suckling
"The Elvio Cogno 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova is the most approachable of the many excellent Barolos produced by this leading estate in the commune of Novello. The fundamental value this wine offers is even more compelling in a classic vintage like 2019. The wine opens beautifully in the glass, unfolding its aromas of redcurrants and wild berries. These are joined by varietal notes of liquorice, cola and camphor ash in a firm, medium-bodied texture." Wine Advocate
"Brilliant garnet red with ruby glints. In the nose of lush raspberries and ripe plums, slightly smoky and forest floor in the aftertaste. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with fine-grained tannin, long final." Falstaff

Barolo “Albe” DOCG 2018
Brilliant and finely shaped on the palate. Expressive, floral notes merge with bright red fruits, mint and ground berries to create a lively and distinctive Barolo that is endowed with pure energy and class. Albe is juicy and fruity and a clear buy not only because of its comparatively moderate price. It comes from the three plots Fossati, Castello della Volta and Costa di Vergne. SUPERIORE.DE
"Just mid ruby and healthy looking. Spicy and stony raspberry and cherry fruit that is lively and with notes of red fruit. The fruit becomes more concentrated the longer it sits in the glass. Supple and gentle fruit palate with crunchy tannins. Long and with a certain leggerezza. Filigree and at the same time intense." Jancis Robinson
"Aromas of ripe raspberries and dark spice follow through to a medium-to full-bodied palate, with some fine, fruit and spice-coated tannin and a medium finish that firms up at the end." James Suckling
"This wine consistently delivers one of the greatest values to be found in Italian wine. The G.D. Vajra 2018 Barolo Albe has all its cards in play as an immediately enjoyable and extremely food-friendly Nebbiolo. This really is the top of the category in that sense. With straightforward winemaking, the wine offers bold cherry, wild plum and plenty of fragrant blue flower and violet. This vintage has the added benefit of softly textured richness." Wine Advocate

"The 2019 Barolo Albe is a nuanced, understated wine, but also a rare Albe that needs time in bottle. Sweet floral and spicy notes open first, leading to an attractive core of Nebbiolo fruit. Gentle and restrained, with beautiful precision, the 2019 Albe is a quiet wine that is more about energy than grandeur. I have seen the Albe really blossom with a few years in bottle. I expect that to be the case with this wine as well, as it is very classic." Vinous
"A powerful and polished red wine with berries and spices like nutmeg and pepper. Also orange peel. Medium body. Fresh and energetic finish." James Suckling
"This is certainly one of the most popular and versatile wines made in Italy, and deservedly so. The well-priced G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Albe shows some ripe fruit and softness with cherry, dried raspberry and crushed rose. This vintage is similar in character to the 2016 release in that both vintages offer a linear style with good structure at the back. The mouthfeel is polished and long, affording accessibility and complexity too." Wine Advocate

Barolo DOCG 2019
Prunotto's Barolo is a very beautiful, ethereal wine. Rose petals, spices, blood orange, mint and crushed red berry fruit keep it firmly grounded. Saturated in the drink and rich in dark aromas, firmly connected with spices, liquorice and crushed blue flowers. There is power and richness deep within this wine, the well-proportioned tannin is fresh and firm, giving it energy and drive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Palish ruby. Shyly perfumed nose but with plenty of concentration underneath. Just a tiny bit dusty at the beginning and needs lots of aeration. A core of raspberry and strawberry fruit on the palate. Succulent and sweetly aromatic strawberry-fruit palate. Real depth, yet lithe with lots of coating tannins that match the aromatic build-up on the finish." Jancis Robinson

Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2019
The Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is the most accessible of Luigi Baudana's three Baroli. Precise fruit with wonderful tones of black cherry, plum and cassis. The intensity of the characteristic Nebbiolo liquorice and cola takes a back seat in this wine as the dark fruit is the leading force. This vintage brings the acidity and natural structure to carry the wine for 10 years or more. And so it is not surprising that this Barolo needs a few more years to develop its full class and finesse. SUPERIORE.DE
"Notes of spices, smoked wood and dried red flowers with dried raspberries and cocoa. Medium bodied with finely honed tannins and juicy acidity coming through. Polished and chalky on the finish." James Suckling
"Packs a kernel of cherry, raspberry, floral and iron flavors wrapped tightly in a dense matrix of tannins. This red is lean and focused, with vibrant acidity and dusty tannins." Wine Spectator
"The Luigi Baudana 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows the firmness and structure for which this village is renowned, with beautiful scents of rose, rusty nail, autumnal foliage, liquorice and tar. " Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba shows the full range of Serralunga, but in the somewhat austere style that runs through all the wines this year. Dark red fruits, sage, mint, leather and spices fill the layers effortlessly. The Serralunga Barolo is rich and lush, yet super classic and hits all the right notes. It could well be the hidden gem of the entire Vajra range." Vinous

Barolo “Castiglione” DOCG 2017
Barolo Castiglione is the best value of the house's five Barolos and impressively demonstrates Vietti's high level. It begins its grand entrance with dense aromas of dried cherries, plums and tar and then adds notes of white flowers and spices. Mineral shades and memories of smoked meat follow. On the palate, equally layered and complex, the silky tannins grippy. Even in its younger years, it has a fine fruit and finesse that identifies it as one of the outstanding representatives of the appellation. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2017 Barolo Castiglione is a wild, exotic wine. Super-ripe red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon, tobacco, new leather and rose petal all flesh out in this ample, voluptuous Barolo from Vietti. The 2017 is a wine of significant heft hidden behind a wall of tannin. Give it a few years to soften or open it well in advance. Time brings out striking translucence as well as finesse." Vinous
"This is one of the most versatile wines to emerge from Italy in recent years. A bread and butter winner for Vietti, the 2017 Barolo Castiglione is sharply contoured and bright, with an excellent quality of fruit that can be described as crisp, tonic and rich. That extra concentration comes in part from the hot vintage; however, the greater Castiglione growing area delivers consistent quality and persistence above all else." Wine Advocate
"There's such purity of fruit to this with both dried and ripe strawberries and citrus rind. It's full-bodied and structured with layers of ripe tannins that are fine and polished. Tight at the end. Give this two or three years to open and soften." James Suckling

Barolo “Castiglione” DOCG 2018
Barolo Castiglione 2018 is bright, fresh and clearly defined. Crushed red berry fruit, white pepper, chalk, mint and rose petals run through this beautifully shaped Barolo. The purity of the fruit and overall energy are captivating. Castiglione is Vietti's entry-level Barolo and is always the most approachable in the bottle range, but this vintage shows a higher level of intensity, complexity and freshness. The silky tannins are accompanied by a lovely mentholated brightness into a beautiful finish. A very down-to-earth drop that unmistakably shows off its charm. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, sparkling ruby red with a shimmering core. Smells noble and fine on the nose of mint, raspberry, dried orange, fine floral components in the reverberation. Compact, juicy on the palate, comes along with gripping tannin, still needs time." Falstaff
"Plenty of wild-berry character to the nose and palate. Medium-bodied with good fruit focus and firm tannin that will need a year or two to soften. Bright and youthful. Give it time. Best from 2024." James Suckling
"The 2018 Barolo Castiglione is bright, fresh and delineated. Crushed red berry fruit, white pepper, chalk, mint and rose petal all run through this gorgeous, sculpted Barolo. The purity of the fruit and overall energy here are captivating. I would cellar the 2018 for at least a few years. It's a gorgeous wine in the making." Vinous
"Vietti has the enormous advantage of 10 MGA sites at its disposition for blending purposes. This allows them to select the fruit they want to best express any one vintage. The 2018 Barolo Castiglione draws upon those 10 sites (including the recent additions of Mosconi, Ginestra, Bricco Ravera and Briccolina) to make what is ultimately its best-selling wine. This classic rendition is tonic and clean with varietal tones of wild berry, rose and rusty nail." Wine Advocate
"The classic Barolo by Vietti, from a selection of grapes chosen amongst different vineyards in Barolo area, mainly from Villero and Ravera crus (Castiglione Falletto and Novello municipalities), specifically for 2018 vintage. Calcareous-clay soils. Sour cherry on the nose, notes of star anise and wild rose, with a finish to the notes of undergrowth. Sip with fine and iodine tannins, nice persistence and fruity-floral return." Luca Gardini

Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2016
The grapes for the garnet red Cerequio grow in La Morra. The bouquet is unmistakably balsamic, with fresh flowers, blackberries, dried mushrooms, spicy notes and the memory of incense and some tree bark. On the palate, the delicate fruitiness harmonizes with a subtle aroma of tobacco and coffee. Firm tannin, good acidity, but focused, elegant and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE
"Perfumed and very pretty with aromas of ripe strawberries, dried flowers and sandalwood that follow through to a full-bodied, tight and compact palate. Give it a year or two to open, but already impressive." James Suckling
"Pure and fragrant nose with floral notes and sweet red berries. Palate has a richness to it with fine texture; tannins are full and fine beneath layers of complexity. This is a lovely drink. Captivating." Decanter

Barolo Boscareto DOCG 2016
Boscareto from Serralunga d'Alba smells intensely of leather and liquorice, dried flowers and undergrowth, straightforwardly the round, fragrant taste follows its way into the persistent final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Beni di Batasiolo makes two top-end single-vineyard Baroli, and the 2016 Barolo Boscareto is one of those. This wine sees fruit from Serralunga d'Alba and therefore represents the bolder and more powerful of the two. But in all honesty, the differences are minimal, especially in a vintage such as 2016 that so successfully brings out the purity of the fruit across all vineyard sites." Wine Advocate
"Savoury nose with baked earth and blackberry fruit. Palate is extracted, with a core of sweetness and a rasp of tannin. Long finish." Decanter
"Aromas of flowers, cedar, strawberries and chocolate follow through to a full body, with a solid core of fruit and tannins and a chewy finish. Needs time to soften." James Suckling

Barolo “Garretti” DOCG 2018

Barolo Garretti is a wine from the slopes of the La Spinetta estate in Grinzane Cavour. Previously, these grapes were used in the Barolo Campé. SUPERIORE.DE
"The La Spinetta 2018 Barolo Garretti is underlined by a dark and savory quality that appears throughout this experience. Blackberry and dried cherry give the wine solid grounding and a long-lasting taste profile. Those dark fruit tones are amply surrounded by spice, toasted hazelnut and black truffle." Wine Advocate
"This is a solid 2018 with medium to full body, chewy tannins and a fruity, smoky, and nutty finish. Needs time to soften. Try after 2025." James Suckling

No wine is deeper in flavour, richer and more elegant than Barolo from Piedmont. Its area of origin lies in the gentle Langhe hills southwest of Alba, where the grape of the varietal Barolo – the ancient Nebbiolo – thrives best. Today, the wine-growing area consists of eleven small communes, five of which stand out in particular. The south-facing vineyards around Monforte d'Alba, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and the namesake village of Barolo produce the lion's share of this complex red wine, while production is supplemented by smaller wineries from the remaining six villages (Diano d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, Novello, Cherasco, Roddi and Verduno).
King of Italian red wines
Barolo – as we know and love it today – was most likely born in the 19th century and until then was considered a sweet wine. This changed around 1832, when the Frenchwoman Victurine Colbert, wife of the wealthy Marquis Faletti, brought her compatriot and oenologist Louis Oudart to Piedmont for wine production. Thanks to his help, the barrel-aged, dry version of Barolo was created, which soon became the new favourite drink of the Piedmontese royal family. This connection with the Savoy ruling family from Turin also earned Barolo its nickname "wine of kings and king of wines".
War and peace around Barolo
However, the powerful red wine only became really famous in the 1960s. The Langhe hills were officially designated as a Barolo DOCG growing region two decades later, which corresponds to the highest level of the Italian quality system. In accordance with tradition, long maceration periods until then resulted in a harsh, tannic wine that was matured in large, old wooden barrels without temperature control. In terms of its production, however, Barolo underwent significant innovations from the 1980s onwards, when long-established traditionalists clashed with the younger generation over the way the red wine was made, in what became known as the "Barolo War". The revolutionary movement of the "Barolo Boys" included winemakers Elio Altare and Roberto Voerzio, who, to the outrage of their traditionalist fathers, advocated an accessible, much fruitier style of Barolo. Against tradition, they began to work with low yields, shorter maceration times and brand new barrique barrels. Fortunately, the "Barolo war" ended only a few years later in favour of all wine lovers: while the modernists reduced the use of new wood, and some of them even returned to the traditional large barrels, the traditionalists introduced technological improvements and lower yields, which in the end brought Barolo to its excellent quality level with combined forces.
Cult character with storage potential
Today, the moody Nebbiolo variety grows in the best vineyards of the Langhe at an altitude of 300 to 450 metres. The 2,000-hectare cultivation zone has long since surpassed a value of two million euros/ha and is divided into the smallest parcels. For the sake of clarity, the MGA (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiunte – Supplementary Geographical Indications) were introduced in 2010, identifying a full 181 vineyard sites. Barolo site wines can bear the name of the respective MGA on the label, which tells customers more about the red wine's zone of origin. This is because, depending on where exactly the vines are located, Barolo shows different characteristics in acidity, tannin and aroma. Roughly speaking, in the east of the area near Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte and Castiglione Falletto, a lush, tannic Barolo is produced on a sandstone subsoil. In contrast, the marl soils in the west around La Morra, Verduno, Barolo and Novello produce a more aromatic version with gentle tannins. Regardless of the site, each Barolo must mature for more than three years before being sold, 18 months of which are in wood. For the Riserva, it is even more than five years in which the aromatic development takes its course. The ruby-red treasures from our range can be uncorked immediately, even though Barolo undoubtedly has the potential to reward the patient wine connoisseur decades later with rich fruit aromas and tannins.
