Anyone looking for the hardest terroir in the Barolo zone will inevitably end up in Serralunga d'Alba. The whitish limestone marl soils of the Helvetian formation – compacted, rich in minerals, barren – give the Nebbiolo here a rigour that is not found elsewhere in the Langhe. No flattery, no quick opening. Instead: structure, depth, staying power. The Rosso family has been cultivating these soils for over a century. For the Barolo del Comune, Davide Rosso draws from four parcels that cover the entire breadth of the municipality: Costa Bella in the northern part, south-facing; Broglio, sandy and east-facing in the heart of Serralunga; Sorano, clay-rich, also east-facing; and Meriame, limestone-rich, a more recent acquisition. No single site dominates, the goal is a wine that represents Serralunga as a whole, not just one facet. Hand-picked in mid-October, spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks for 25 days with daily pumping over and a délestage at half-time. Maturation in 50-hectolitre French oak barrels for 18 to 36 months, depending on the origin of the grapes. Bottled without filtration.
Concentrated, bright garnet red in the glass. The nose is classic Serralunga: violets, dried rose, dark cherry, cocoa, coffee and the unmistakable mineral depth of the limestone marl. Juicy and precise on the palate, with finely granulated tannins, lively acidity and a final that slowly fades between bitter chocolate and tar. The difference to the Barolo DOCG? Less breadth, more verticality. This wine is more angular and also more difficult at the beginning, this is Serralunga in purezza. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling garnet with hints of brick red. Warm and soft on the nose of ripe berries and Mediterranean scrub. Subtly fruity on the palate, with fine tannins and invigorating acidity, harmonious through to the long finish." Falstaff
"The 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a blend of eight sites across the village. Kirsch, blood orange, white pepper, chalk, mint and cinnamon all meld together as the 2021 opens in the glass. The gentler side of Serralunga is very much in evidence, although there is a good kick of tannin on the close." Vinous
"Subtle on the nose, with stones, cherries, minerals, licorice and sweet violets. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows firm tannins and refreshing acidity. Not as long as expected." James Suckling
"Sweet dark cherries and fresh garden mint intertwine with cinnamon sticks and star anise, while threads of tar and earth provide the deep bass notes that make Serralunga famous. The palate reveals why this village earned its powerhouse reputation: waves of pure fruit roll across crushed chalk minerality, building to a finale of spent tea leaves and bitter chocolate. A wine that flexes its muscles while wearing its finest silk suit, showing why Serralunga remains Barolo's center of gravitational force." Wine Enthusiast
"A solid red, with density to its texture, offering flavors that evoke cherry, currant, rose hip and almond. Flashes of eucalyptus, iron and tobacco peek through as this winds down on the long, vibrant aftertaste." Wine Spectator
