Before individual vineyards became a currency, Barolo was an idea. An idea that combined different soils, different slopes, different communities into one whole – and created a complexity that no single vineyard could achieve on its own. Davide Rosso sticks to this idea. His Barolo DOCG combines grapes from three municipalities in equal parts: Serralunga d'Alba with its hard limestone marls and uncompromising tannin structure, Castiglione Falletto with somewhat lighter, sandy soils and a natural aromatic suppleness, and the commune of Barolo itself, whose Tortonian soils lend the Nebbiolo a floral, accessible side.
Three characters, one wine – a recipe that the old Langhe producers already knew when nobody asked the name of the vineyard. Vinification follows the house standard: manual harvest in October, destemming, 25 days of spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks with daily pumping over. Maturation in 25 and 50 hectolitre French oak barrels for 18 to 36 months, depending on the character of the vintage. Bottled without filtration.
The 2021 gives this wine perhaps its most elegant form to date: bright garnet red, pomegranate, violets, candied cherry, camphor and a hint of liquorice on the nose. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with a fine tannin structure and a length that does not forget the Serralunga faction. Not a heavy wine, but a highly harmonious one, and that's what counts. "Bright, brightening ruby red colour. Spicy and powerful nose of red pepper, fully ripe blueberries and raspberries, also slightly floral on the finish. Spreads softly and with sweet fruit on the palate, with supporting acidity and well-integrated tannins." Falstaff
"This red wine is austere and shows flavours of cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Eucalyptus, tar and sanguine accents add depth, while the assertive tannins linger on the finish. Lively and concentrated. Have patience." Wine Spectator
"A forthright Barolo with intense aromas of fruit, sweet spices, dried cherries, liquorice, smoke, forest, tobacco and mint. It is firm, austere and full-bodied, showing defined fruit with hints of blood orange, good fruit concentration, crisp acidity and an austere but balanced finish that is not lacking in juiciness. Amazing, polished finish." James Suckling
"Sweet dark cherries and crushed spices mingle with hints of vanilla root and licorice, creating a nostalgic soda shop vibe. The palate flows with generous waves of ripe fruit, while fine-grained tannins provide enough structure to keep things interesting without getting in the way of pure drinking pleasure. A Barolo that exemplifies the the time, drinks well now but will age gracefully." Wine Enthusiast
