Before the name Ester Canale graced a bottle of wine, it belonged to a woman who inherited one of Piedmont's most famous plots: a section of the Vigna Rionda in Serralunga d'Alba, from which her cousin Tommaso Canale once supplied the grapes for Bruno Giacosa's legendary Collina Rionda. Through this circuitous route, part of this vineyard came into the possession of the Rosso family, who have been cultivating vines in Serralunga for over a hundred years. With a good dozen renowned vineyards to his name, including Cerretta, Broglio and Meriame, Davide Rosso took over the estate in 2001, bringing with him a wealth of experience from Burgundy and a keen eye for precision.

In the Vigna Rionda, old vines over seventy years old now stand alongside younger plots, which originate from a mass selection of the original stock and were planted in 2012 and 2013 – it is from these that this Langhe Nebbiolo is produced. The compact, calcareous marl soil of Serralunga, which is harder and richer in iron than that of La Morra, imparts the Nebbiolo with its characteristic power and firmness. The single-varietal Nebbiolo matures for twelve months in 25-hectolitre French oak barrels, made from timber felled in the Forest of Fontainebleau, before being bottled: large enough to preserve the fruit and floral notes, rather than masking them with woody flavours.

A delicate rose-petal red in the glass. On the nose, wild rose and iris unfold, accompanied by dried herbs and a hint of sandalwood, whilst on the palate, ripe cherry and fine, well-integrated tannins create a sense of tension, supported by lively acidity.
