Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2023
Canalicchio di Sopras Rosso di Montalcino comes mainly from the vineyards of the Cru Canalicchio with soils that have a pronounced clay component and are very rich in intermediate elements such as magnesium, iron and manganese. Depending on the vintage and climate, a small proportion may also come from the Cru Montosoli, where the presence of marl ensures juiciness and minerality.

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019
"The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 is traditionally a 50/50 blend of the two terroirs on which our vineyards are located, Canalicchio and Montosoli. Our flagship wine, which has been produced since 1966, is in search of the perfect balance every vintage so that these two terroirs complement each other. The 2019 expresses itself through density, fullness and freshness in a framework of great structure and elegance. The vintage emphasises the balsamic, opulence and minerality of our Sangiovese, which moves in a lively and silky context." Francesco Ripaccioli

"The 2020 Vigna La Casaccia from the vineyard of the same name in the Cru Canalicchio is the wine that reflects the characteristics of this vineyard planted in 1990. Vigna Casaccia, thanks to its calcareous clay soils, enhances the sweetness of the tannin, its silkiness and its gradual relaxation, emphasised in the 2020 vintage by a mineral and fresh contrast." "Our 2020 Vigna Montosoli is the wine that tells the story of the characteristics of this splendid and unique hillside, characterised by verticality, minerality and juiciness, length and depth, but also by a more pronounced tannic structure, thanks to its more galestro and mineral soils: The 2020 vintage also reinforces its aromatic, floral and enveloping complexity." "This vintage has confirmed once again that a great harvest is produced when perfect conditions are created before the harvest, and this was the case in 2017. The result is a wine with great personality, generous on the nose, enveloping and sensual, which surprises on the palate with its freshness and the surprising balance that makes it so pleasant. Fire and ice, sweetness and juiciness, balsamic and fruit, a mix of ingredients that make this vintage very pleasant, but also give it the seriousness of a great Brunello di Montalcino." Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG 2019
"Our Riserva is only produced in exceptional vintages and comes exclusively from the Vigna Vecchia Mercatale vineyard, currently the oldest on the estate, which was planted in 1988. The vineyard is located in the Cru Canalicchio and, thanks to its terroir and age, guarantees the wines a great structure and good flavour. The northern exposure and the easterly winds, which favour the development of the balsamic aromas typical of the cru, allow the wines from this vineyard to achieve an optimal balance between fruit and acidity, an essential prerequisite for good ageing. It is a wine that honours the greatness of the vintage and the exceptional nature of the harvest with a refined elegance that develops into longevity and great tannic structure. With the Riserva 2019, we are launching our nineteenth since 1966, which emphasises the rarity and importance we attach to these wines." Francesco Ripaccioli

Canalicchio di Sopra tells the story of a traditional family winery that has played an important role in the development of Montalcino into one of Italy's most renowned wine regions for over 60 years. Primo Pacenti founded the winery in 1962 and is now part of the group of winegrowers who later founded the Brunello di Montalcino consortium.
Cru sites of particular diversity.
Today, the company owns 60 hectares of land around Montalcino, of which 22 hectares are planted exclusively with the Sangiovese grape variety. The vineyards are spread over two outstanding cru sites, which are characterised by different soils. The Cru Canalicchio consists of six individual vineyards that grow on clayey and calcareous soils with a high proportion of calcium carbonate. These soil conditions give the wines fullness and wonderfully silky tannins. The Cru Montosoli, on the other hand, comprises four vineyards with characteristic marl soil. This is rich in minerals and gives the wines distinctive flavour and minerality. The differences are reflected in particular in the two Brunello wines Vigna La Casaccia and Vigna Montosoli, while the harmony of the two cru sites comes to the fore in the Brunello Classico, which has been the winery's flagship since the first vintage in 1966.
The vines grow on the northern side of the Montalcino hill, where the climate is milder. In times of climate change, the cooler location and large temperature fluctuations favour grape ripening, which is why the red wines from the warmer vintages are wonderfully balanced and complex. From the pioneering spirit of founder Primo Pacenti to the meticulous work in the vineyards of his son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli, who joined the family business in 1987, the high quality standards run like a golden thread through the history of the winery.
Quality obsessed in the third generation.
Today, Primo's grandsons Simonetta, Marco and Francesco have been running the business since 2001, the third generation, with vision and great dedication to quality. In order to bring the many facets of Sangiovese to the glass, the family business has committed itself to a sustainable approach in the vineyard, without the use of chemical fertilisers and herbicides. In addition, the entire cultivation of the vineyards is carried out by hand. The underground wine cellar, which was completely renovated in 2018, is an excellent example of how tradition and innovation can be combined. Here, both the Rosso di Montalcino and the precious Brunello wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks before maturing slowly in large Slavonian and French oak barrels.
"Canalicchio di Sopra is undoubtedly one of the most interesting wineries in Montalcino today", enthuses wine expert Antonio Galloni. We can only agree: Wine lovers and Montalcino fans who have not yet tasted these top wines should definitely do so. SUPERIORE.DE
