The pure Merlot Focus is beguiling with an elegant scent of red fruits and warm, balsamic tones. The fresh taste is characterized by the typical spice and the lively tannins of a high-quality and rare Merlot of the Colli Orientali. SUPERIORE.DE

"Powerful ruby red with slightly brightening edge. Compact and noble nose of black currants, some cassis and green pepper accompanied by light white pepper. On the palate delicately spicy and powerful, spans on grippy tannin wide, medium structure, has character, long." Falstaff

"This is extremely pretty with licorice, blackberry and walnut character. Full body, round and velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Dusty texture." James Suckling

"Vivid full ruby. Bright and fresh on the nose and in the mouth, with savory and juicy nuances of dark plum, coffee, mint and cocoa. Finishes crisp and vibrantly fruity, with no green notes. • "Pernice" Pinot Nero Provincia di Pavia IGT 2013

“Pernice” Pinot Nero Provincia di Pavia IGT 2013

As early as 1865, the first 1,850 Pinot Noir vines were brought to Italy from Burgundy by Count Vistarino. Since then, the vinification of this demanding grape variety has been continually refined by generations. Today, the Pinot Noir Noirs of the dynasty of winegrowers can even outshine much more expensive Pinot Noirs from Burgundy at international tastings.

Pernice comes from the single vineyard of the same name and fascinates with its fine fragrance and elegance. Intense ruby red with garnet reflections. On the nose complex and rich with notes of violets and small red fruits, some roasted coffee and cocoa. On the palate elegant, full-bodied, with present fruit, very balanced with a pleasant minerality and a long, spicy finish. The harmonious tannins make this wine elegant and give it a good backbone from start to finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Perfumed with fragrant spice and smoky mineral notes, this dense and chewy Pinot is fresh and appealing. Medium-bodied, with a core of ripe raspberry and mulberry fruit, Earl Grey tea and tar notes that expands on the finish." Wine Spectator

“Don Antonio” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2013

Don Antonio is the best selection from the Morgante vineyards, where only Nero d'Avola grows. Concentrated and hauntingaromas, very typical of the variety, ripe fruit accompanied by mineral and balsamic notes. Lively and elegant on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Carmelo Morgante makes a fine Nero d'Avola. The 2013 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Don Antonio is one of his best creations so far. The wine is dark and impenetrable and loaded tight with bold fruit intensity. It shows a careful measure of heft and power that leaves a deep impression but that does't feel too heavy or thick. Despite its big bones, the wine maintains its grace and elegance. Deep concentration - driven by oak flavors of spice and chocolate - push the wine forward over the palate." Robert Parker

“Anrar” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2013

The lively, long Pinot Nero Anrar Riserva seduces with elegance and character. Dark garnet red colour and fragrant aromas of wild cherry, ripe raspberry, lavender and dried herbs. On the palate a firm, but extremely silky texture and despite the youthful freshness already much strength and perseverance. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Anrar is a very distinctive wine that most certainly deserves attention. The approach adopted here is meatier and more concentrated than most. The wine exhibits a saturated ruby color and a bouquet that is both articulate and generous. There are evident tones of dark fruit and forest bramble, but you also get pretty notes of nutmeg and cinnamon at the back. It is aged in new barrique. The wine offers profound depth and richness on the long finish." Robert Parker

A compact and finesse-rich Merlot-Cabernet from old vineyards and pressed according to traditional methods. Deep dark red colour, with complex, berry aromas on the nose. On the palate Anticus convinces with pleasantly ripe fruit, velvety tannins and a beautiful texture. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, darkly glowing garnet. In the nose spicy, peppery, then ripe Amarena cherries and plums, liquorice and leathery spice in the aftertaste. The palate is full and fruity, juicy, wide open, hearty tannin, with a lot of pressure at the beginning, course and finish." Falstaff

"Packaged in a handsome and heavy glass bottle, the Nals Margreid 2017 Alto Adige Merlot Cabernet Riserva Anticus is a dark and brooding red wine with rich fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherry and plum. This is a beautifully intense and hearty red to pair with a hearty polenta and meat stew dish on a snowy winter night, après-ski. The wine's fleshy and fruity intensity and its spicy back-end flavors will warm your soul and palate." Robert Parker

    • "Rosso del Conte" Contea di Sclafani DOC 2012

“Rosso del Conte” Contea di Sclafani DOC 2012

Ruby red, with a fine cherry scent, in which there are also hints of nuts and forest fruits, vanilla, cinnamon, sage and tobacco. Concentrated, rich taste with harmonious tannins and long aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"The venerated 2012 Sicilia Contea di Sclafani Rosso del Conte Tenuta Regaleali is a blend of 41% Nero d'Avola, 31% Perricone and the rest is a mix of various red grapes found on the Regaleali estate. Interestingly, past editions of this wine were reported as all Nero d'Avola but the blending formula seems to have gotten more complex with each passing vintage. This is a big boned wine with thick extraction and a long-lasting build. In fact, this bottle should go into the cellar for a few more years to better integrate and soften. The finish offers coffee, tar, licorice, dried fruit, blackberry preserves and much more. Rosso del Conte shows profound complexity." Robert Parker

    • "Naturalis Historia" Taurasi DOCG 2009

      “Naturalis Historia” Taurasi DOCG 2009

The grapes for the rare Naturalis Historia come from a 40-year-old vineyard located 400 meters above sea level with deep, sandy soils of volcanic origin in Mirabella. Deep, sparkling dark red. In the bouquet red currant, sweet spices and aromas of dark plums and red cherries. In the drink perfectly structured with well-dosed pressure, but with a full body that is never broad, but fresh, smooth and very agile, leading to a very harmonious, long lasting final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fully saturated purple-ruby with a pale rim. Floral nuances complement blackberry, fresh herbs and sweet spices on the complex nose. Bright, juicy and fresh, then slightly linear in its delivery of steely blue and black fruit flavors. Finishes long with mountingly chewy tannins and a strong presence of licorice." Vinous

"Aromas evoking dark baking spice, forest floor, French oak, dried herb, violet and balsamic menthol are some of the aromas you'll find on this fragrant structured red. The concentrated palate evokes plum, blackberry jam, vanilla and tobacco while firm fine-grained tannins provide the support." Wine Enthusiast

"This bright red is full-bodied and mouthwatering, packed with ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit and licorice snap, mandarin orange peel and smoky mineral notes. Creamy tannins firm the lingering, aromatic finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2009 Taurasi Naturalis Historia is an exceptional expression of Aglianico that shows a surprisingly floral bouquet with dried rose petal and lavender potpourri. The wine is smooth and silky in texture, which is not an easy feat for the very robust and naturally tannic grape. This hearty red wine shows heft and persistence, but it also delivers grace and understated power. Toasted notes of cinnamon and roasted almond appear on the close." Robert Parker

    • "Serpico" Aglianico Irpinia DOC 2012

      “Serpico” Aglianico Irpinia DOC 2012

Serpico is an authentic, long-lasting wine made from Aglianico grapes, some of which come from vines over 100 years old. Intense, deep ruby red colour and an extremely complex bouquet with aromas of cherries, sweet spices, liquorice, coffee and cocoa. Impressive its extraordinary concentration and aroma as well as the enormously long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Irpinia Aglianico Serpico comes from pre-phylloxera vines and the wine is aged in both new and neutral oak. Serpico represents Feudi di San Gregorio's best fruit and the wine philosophy is modern and rich, stylistically speaking. Dark prune, blackberry, spice, licorice, tar, tobacco and balsam herb contribute to the complex bouquet. The mouthfeel is richly textured and velvety. This wine needs a few more years before the fruit reaches full focus." Robert Parker

"Dense tannins are swathed in a tightly woven cloth of crushed black currant, tarry mineral, dried thyme and licorice snap flavors in this rich, full-bodied red. Long and focused, with a lasting, aromatic finish." Wine Spectator

"Forest floor, leather, tilled soil, ripe berry and balsam are some of the aromas you'll find in this delicious red. The smooth, dense palate delivers blackberry jam, espresso, licorice and ground pepper flavors, blanketed with soft, silky tannins. Tobacco and graphite notes linger on the finish." Wine Enthusiast

"A red with chocolate, spices and hints of oak on the nose and palate. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Always a big yet structured and agile red." James Suckling

"A great Irpinian Aglianico which balances power and refinement. From the 400m-high Dal Re vineyard, only 10,000 bottles were produced. Hugely concentrated with impenetrable colour. Although there is great fruit density here, the wine retains wonderful lift. It saw 12 months’ ageing in new oak before five years in bottle. Will live 50 years." Decanter

    • "Taber" Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018

“Taber” Lagrein Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018

For years, the red top Riserva of the Bolzano Winery has undisputedly been the Lagrein Taber with a fine bouquet of wild berry fruit, herbal aromas and spicy notes. Taber is a dense, full-bodied wine carried by a pleasant acidity and silky tannins, finishing with notes of candied fruit. A top wine from over 80-year-old vines of the Taberhof near Gries and virtually every year an aspirant to the "Tre Bicchieri" of the Gambero Rosso. The best Lagrein Riserva in South Tyrol? Find out! SUPERIORE.DE

"Very dense, concentrated nose with lots of dark fruit, exotic spices, dark dark chocolate, ripe blueberries and dark spicy notes, liquorice. Despite the fullness with quite cool beginnings. In the mouth, the powerful Lagrein is very creamy, with an almost chocolatey texture and round, pleasing and melting in the best sense, an elegant delight with fine, acidity and noticeable, sweetish tannins, but also with a nice draw and freshness. Still too young. Leave to lie. A top wine from over 80-year-old vines of the Taberhof near Gries and almost every year an aspirant for the "Tre Bicchieri" of the Gambero Rosso. Certainly one of the best Lagreines. Weinwisser

"Rich, impenetrable ruby violet. Intense nose with notes of elderberries and blueberries, spicy background, plus some dark chocolate. Hearty and grippy on the palate, showing plenty of pithy tannin with a supple core, lots of fresh juicy fruit, elderberries and black cherries, lingers long." Falstaff

"Plush aromas of wood smoke, aromatic herb, plum, fig, and cedar, palate of black cherry and dark chocolate." Decanter

“Vintage Tunina” Bianco Venezia Giulia IGT 2018

Vintage Tunina is mainly pressed from Sauvignon and Chardonnay. There are also small portions of Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Picolit. Bright golden yellow, the intense, very elegant bouquet shows notes of honey and meadow flowers. Dry, soft, very fruity taste with excellent persistence and full body. SUPERIORE.DE

"One of Friuli's most iconic wines, this racy, elegant white opens with enticing scents of white spring flowers, orchard fruit, citrus and wet stone. Savory and vibrant, the palate boasts intriguing energy and tension, delivering ripe pear, peach, nectarine and lemon drop candy alongside a mineral vein and crisp acidity." Wine Enthusiast

"A white with wonderful minerality and intensity with sliced cooked pears, apples and stone, as well as flint. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and poised with nice, phenolic tension to the ripe fruit. Really racy. Dynamic. One of the best I have tasted in a long time." James Suckling

    • "MIX 36" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“MIX 36” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Very delicious and interesting is the MIX 36 - a spontaneously fermented, pure Sangiovese from 36 different Sangiovese clones. Complex bouquet with aromas of red fruits, hints of leather and light smoked notes. Round and juicy on the palate, interwoven tannins, the maturity potential well recognizable. Approximately 10,000 bottles come onto the market with this third vintage. Particularly attractive for the wine lover: on the label you will find vineyard locations, harvest yields and technical specifications of the winemaking process. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Mix 36 is a clever mono-varietal expression of Sangiovese made from 36 distinct biotypes of the grape, 18 of which are exclusive to the Fonterutoli estate. The vines are 11 years old and harvest started on October 10th this vintage. The fruit is balanced and linear with red cherry, spice, dried blueberry and tobacco. It shows medium density and impressive persistence." Robert Parker

"A red that is extremely polished and refined with blackberry and cherry character. Hints of cedar and dried flowers. Medium body. Juicy fruit." James Suckling

"The 2013 Mix 36, a blend of 36 Sangiovese biotypes on the property, is terrific. Bright, translucent and light on its feet, the 2013 speaks to finesse above all else. Expressive floral notes add lift, and the wine continues to open up in the glass. This beautifully rendered Sangiovese shows what Mazzei can do in a more understated style. Impressive." • "Mason di Mason" Pinot Nero Alto Adige DOC 2017 (BIO)

“Mason di Mason” Pinot Nero Alto Adige DOC 2017 (BIO)

"The best of the best - this is not a wine you drink every day. It needs attention, time to mature and likes to play the leading role: as the crowning glory of a festive table or even as a proud solitaire." Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg, Manincor Winery

Noble and pure, the Mason di Mason Pinot Nero shines with aromas of raspberry, rose petal, underbrush and sweet spices. Elegant and seamlessly round on the palate with incredible balance, complexity and detail. A knockout Pinot Noir! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening ruby garnet. Very appealing nose with notes of raspberry, pomegranate, goji berries and fine spices, exciting. Round and supple on the attack and finish, opens with plenty of fine-mesh tannin, lots of layers, salty and deep in the mid-palate, round and very long." Falstaff

"Bright red. Very refined, spicy red fruit and flowers on the inviting nose. Then similarly inviting flavors of red and dark berries, plus complicating notes of licorice in the mouth. Finishes clean and bright, with excellent length and bright floral echoes. Nicely done." Vinous

    • Barolo "Cerretta" DOCG 2012

      Barolo “Cerretta” DOCG 2012

Barolo Baudana from the single vineyard Cerretta presents itself energetic and intense with a scent of black cherries, wild herbs, smoke and tar. Convincing also at the palate with multilayered flavours and textures, strength and structure. The powerful tannin and the stately acidity show unmistakably the style of a classic Barolo. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Cerretta is richer, deeper and darker than the Baudana. Black cherry, smoke, licorice and dark spices open up first, followed by scents of sage, rosemary and mint that add complexity. In 2012, the Cerretta is more about brawn than finesse. Layers of fruit fill out the wine's ample frame nicely, but above all else, the Cerretta is distinguished for its raw, almost animal, power." VINOUS

"A bright, floral-, strawberry-, cherry- and herb-flavored version, allied to an elegant profile. Picks up mineral and tobacco notes as this cruises to a lengthy conclusion. Though stylish, this has ample grip and complexity." Wine Spectator

"Raspberry compote, star anise, grilled herb and sun baked earth and a whiff of leather are some of the aromas you'll find on this structured Barolo. On the full-bodied palate, chopped mint, licorice and tobacco accent ripe Morello cherry and juicy raspberry." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Oreno" Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

      “Oreno” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

Shiny, deep ruby violet. Compact nose with intense notes of dark currants, blackberries and tobacco, exciting play. Shows warmth and fire, juicy, rich fruit and unfolds with fine-grained, dense tannin and ends with a furious finale to noble dark chocolate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Plenty of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark chocolate character with oyster shell and walnut undertones. Full body, extremely tight and structured with blueberry and light vanilla and coffee highlights. A gorgeous Oreno." James Suckling

"Rich and dense, but elegant, with a dusty swath of tannins coating the finish. Black cherry, black currant and mineral flavors hold court, with a fresh, balanced feel on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Oreno is fabulous. Rich, sumptuous and yet very much medium in body, the 2015 has it all going on. Silky tannins and juicy, pliant fruit add to the wine's considerable appeal. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, mocha and licorice infuse this racy, showy Tuscan red. The 2015 is one of the best vintages of Oreno I have tasted of late." Antonio Galloni

    • Barolo "Baudana" DOCG 2013

      Barolo “Baudana” DOCG 2013

Fresh, sparkling ruby garnet. Opens with notes of pickled anchovies, then leather and dark wild raspberry. At the palate a lot of close-meshed, stoffiges tannin, pulls through rapidly, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure. Put away for some more years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, medium ruby. Seems austere and quite closed in mouth and nose. Only with air a scent of red berries and floral hints develops. At the palate classic tannin structure, connected with a slowly intensifying, very pure fruit. Exceedingly vital, lots of inner tension and minerality." Weinwisser

"The 2013 Barolo Baudana opens with striking, beguiling aromatics. Deep, pliant and sensual on the palate, the 2013 exudes fruit intensity to the point the tannins are nearly buried. Intense savory and mineral notes provide an underpinning of virile intensity that builds into the super-expressive finish." VINOUS

"Seems open and forthcoming for the cherry, black currant and floral aromas and flavors, but this red has some punch too. The dense tannins provide support, while tobacco, green olive and mineral notes add depth. Terrific length." Wine Spectator

    • "Pàtrimo" Rosso Campania IGT 2013

      “Pàtrimo” Rosso Campania IGT 2013

The pure Merlot Pàtrimo fascinates with its dense ruby red colour, which almost tends to be black and yet shows itself clearly. In the nose it reveals aromas of black fruits with hints of sweet spices, curry, but also eucalyptus, vanilla and coffee. On the palate, volume and concentration leave a lasting impression. SUPERIORE.DE

"This vintage really embodies the message and style that this great Campania Merlot aims to achieve. It stays true to the fruit and the wild/untamed personality of the territory that shaped it. The 2013 Pàtrimo is one of those wines that flaunts its confidence and greatness despite its recent release date. The fruit is very young and plump, but there is enough of it to carry the wine over the next decade or two. Since the 2009 vintage, Pàtrimo has moved increasingly towards a higher percentage of neutral oak and that change becomes very obvious in this vintage. The freshness and purity of the fruit is the wine's driving force. Dark cherry, raspberry and dark plum lead the charge. Wait a few years before popping this cork. This is an enormously encouraging and inspiring vintage of Pàtrimo." Robert Parker

    • Barolo Ravera DOCG 2015

      Barolo Ravera DOCG 2015

Single vineyard Barolo Ravera from 40 to 50 year old vines smells pure and intense of raspberries, strawberries and flowers. Full-bodied and silky on the palate, beautiful fruit, super-fine tannins and a wonderful length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous mid ruby. Like the 2015 Cascina Nuova, but amplified. Great lift and focus of ripe red fruit. Ripe palate with zippy, crunchy red fruit and polished tannins. Very long, satisfying and mouth-filling without being heavy, and with intense, perfumed red fruit building up on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Soaring aromatics make a strong opening statement in the 2015 Barolo Ravera. Bright, precise and finely sculpted, the Ravera captures all the best the 2015 vintage has to offer. Kirsch, sweet mint, hard candy and expressive floral notes are given an extra kick of inner sweetness from the natural energy of Ravera. There is so much to look forward to as the 2015 develops in bottle. This is a stellar showing" VINOUS

"This is tightly structured and dense, with burly tannins wrapped around cherry, plum, licorice, tar and menthol flavors. It’s difficult to see where this is going today, but the finish is long and will need considerable time to hit its stride." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Barolo Ravera shows a deep concentration and dark fruit intensity. This warm-vintage Barolo opens with a ripe and soft bouquet that brings out some nice cherry notes with creamy black fruit at the back. The finish is soft and luscious. There is so much fruity succulence here that the wine should stand up to a gamey dish of liver pâté or pasta with wild boar." Robert Parker

"Beautifully pure and seamless Barolo with superb balance. Bright strawberry and floral aromas and attractive sweet spices, leading to a palate with assertive, juicy tannins that carry rich, fresh red-plum and cherry flavor. Power with elegance." James Suckling

"New leather, balsamic herb, rose, truffle and woodland berry aromas take shape in the glass along with a whiff of charcuterie. The focused, savory palate has a great depth of flavor, doling out raspberry compote, cinnamon, crushed mint and a hint of cocoa alongside a backbone of firm tannins and fresh acidity. It still needs time to fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Grandi Annate" Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2013

“Grandi Annate” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2013

Vinified only in the best vintages and aged in 20% new and 80% used barriques, the "Grandi Annate" is certainly one of the best Nobile in the region. Sparkling, dense garnet, smells intensely of liquorice, pickled cherries and delicately of raspberries. Powerful and robust on the palate, lots of taut, present tannin. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Vigna Loreto" DOCG 2012

Brunello di Montalcino “Vigna Loreto” DOCG 2012

Brunello Vigna Loreto 2012 with smoky bouquet and hearty aromas of herbs and graphite. Dense and compact on the palate. Deep dark, ripe fruit, well structured with silky tannins and long intense finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"A tight and compressed ripe wine with spices, berries and ripe fruit. Medium body, a solid core of fruit and a long and flavorful finish. Subtle and structured." James Suckling

"Rich, full of cherry and raspberry fruit and augmented by tobacco, spice and mineral flavors. Harmonious and long, this has all the elements to age well and develop greater complexity and nuance." Wine Spectator

"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto sees fruit sourced from a vineyard site located on a sunny, east-facing slope just in front of the new winery. The well-draining limestone soils make for even ripening of fruit and contribute to the wine's rich suppleness. Dried cherry and blackberry segues to spice, cured leather, tar and cola. The wine is darkly concentrated and powerful." Robert Parker

"Good full red. Intense aromas of red cherry, sweet spices, coffee and herbs; this is richer and deeper than the classico Brunello. Then more austere on the palate and less forthcoming presently than that wine, with minerally red cherry and forest floor flavors. Finishes very long, clean and very saline. This will repay cellaring for a decade or so." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

    Things to know aboutvitae
    vitae

The wine guide of the Italian Sommelier Association AIS has been completely redesigned and has been published for the first time since the 2015 edition. VITAE wants to present not only the great and well-known wines, but also wines from smaller and unknown wineries. Particular emphasis is placed on regionality. More than 900 tasters, all AIS sommeliers, will be divided into 162 regional delegations in order to contribute their local expertise.

From about 30,000 wines submitted, about 10,000 were selected from over 2,000 wineries for the book and described on over 2,000 pages. The evaluation is based on the 100-point system, which uses stylized "vines" is displayed. 400 wines achieved the highest mark in the 2015 edition. SUPERIORE.DE
