Unlitro di Ampeleia (1 litre) is a remarkable expression of the vitality of the vineyard's youngest vineyards. Fresh, dynamic and with an enormous drinking flow. A relaxed wine, but by no means banal. SUPERIORE.DE

Deep, multi-layered and alive. In the nose a fascinating blend of sweet berries and dark cherries. The clear and fresh taste flows with fine fruit and good length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Ampeleia's 2016 Carignano is bold, flavorful and quite juicy, with tons of varietal charactater and nuance. Expressive floral and savory notes give the red berry fruit quite a bit of aromatic lift. In 2016, the Carignano is both unique and compelling." Antonio Galloni

"A beam of pure cherry and raspberry is backed by lively acidity and dusty tannins here. Though this tightens up for now, the finish is saturated with fruit." Wine Spectator

"Carignan works in Tuscany. Plenty of dried apricot and dark berry character here with a green tea undertone. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh finish. Made from biodynamic grapes." James Suckling

Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

The fragrance is restrained and elegant, vinous, very finely balanced on the palate with delicious, spicy aromas and fabulous purity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark cherry, lavender, mint, cedar, leather and dried herbs infuse the 2016 Cabernet Franc. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs quite a bit of depth and concentration into its dark fruit, while remaining faithful to the house style. There is so much personality and character here." Antonio Galloni

    About the winemakers
    Ampeleia
    Tuscany | Maremma
    Ampeleia

Elisabetta Foradori is considered by many to be the uncrowned Italian wine queen. The highly respected winemaker from Trentino and her South Tyrolean friends, the entrepreneurs Thomas Widmann and Giovanni Podini, dreamed of a wine like velvet and silk, a noble drop of radiant elegance and finesse. Therefore they started a project and called it Ampeleia (Greek ampelos = the vine). In 2002, the three founders acquired the winery that was right for their ideas in the picturesque mountain village of Roccatederighi in the hinterland of the Maremma. The previous Swiss owners had managed the company with great passion since the 1960s, when French grape varieties Cabernet Franc and Merlot entered the region. Under the name Fattoria di Meleta the estate had already had a good reputation in the eighties - at that time the Maremma was not yet very well known as a wine-growing region.

Gradually, the new owners around star winemaker Elisabetta Foradori bought more land. In the relatively distant vineyards of Ampeleia di Sotto, Ampeleia di Mezzo and Ampeleia di Sopra, which reach different heights between 200 and 600 metres, seven grape varieties are cultivated today according to their suitability: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Grenache, Carignano, Mourvèdre and Alicante Bouschet. Due to the different territorial peculiarities of the plots, the grape varieties must be cultivated with particular care and flexibility. The Ampeleia di Sopra cultivation zone, which is predominantly planted with Cabernet Franc, has been biodynamically operated since 2009. In the foreseeable future, the other sites are also to be completely converted to the most ecologically sustainable farming method.

The two landowners Foradori and Podini – Thomas Widmann left the joint venture in 2009 due to a commitment in politics - stand for wines in a clearly defined style. The fruity drops are more elegant than opulent and are pleasant to drink. At the top of the range of five products is an extremely high-quality blend of Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and four other grape varieties, which bears the name of the young wine house.

A visit to the winery is also recommended for nature lovers. As the mountain village of Roccatederighi lies on a rock massif, the view from the top is magnificent, from high mountains with chestnut forests to cereal fields and olive groves in the plain. SUPERIORE.DE

"The collaborative project is fueled by an uncompromising quest for quality, aiming for a personal, innovative style, but also trying to incorporate the terroir as much as possible."Gambero Rosso
