• Rosso Riserva Montefalco DOC 2013

      Rosso Riserva Montefalco DOC 2013

Deep violet-red colour, with hints of juniper berries, tar, smoke and liquorice on the nose. Montefalco Rosso Riserva offers a lot of juiciness and brings an attractive combination of elegance and structure, rich aromas and polished tannins. SUPERIORE.DE

"The nose shows lots of mocha, brambleberries, plums, spice box, cloves, cinnamon and a hint of orange rind. A full but very well-structured palate with beautiful acidity, tannins that are polished but don't hold back and a long finish." James Suckling

Montefalco Rosso Riserva DOC 2010 · MAGNUM in OWC

Deep violet-red colour, with hints of juniper berries, tar, smoke and liquorice on the nose. The 2010 Montefalco Rosso Riserva offers plenty of juiciness and brings an attractive combination of elegance and structure, rich aromas and polished tannins. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2010 Montefalco Rosso Riserva is an excellent wine that delivers both power and grace. This achievement should not go underestimated. It is easy for Montefalco Rosso (a blend of Sagrantino and Sangiovese) to show muscle, brawn and enormous structure, because those qualities come in abundance - especially with Sangrantino. It is far more difficult to deliver harmony and this wine does exactly that. Dark fruit nuances are followed by spice, barbecue smoke and black licorice." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Arnaldo Caprai
    Umbria
    Arnaldo Caprai

Arnaldo Caprai, a successful businessman in the textile industry, fulfilled his dream of owning his own vineyard in 1971 and bought 5 hectares in Montefalco. In the course of time he acquired further properties in the surrounding area. Since 1988 his son Marco Caprai has managed the winery with great passion and determination. At the beginning of the nineties enormous investments were made in the winery and in the acquisition of new vineyards.

Caprai collaborates with the University of Milan and other research institutes in the agronomic and oenological fields. For example, production results can be continuously improved and new clones of Sagrantino can be identified. With the anniversary Riserva Sagrantino di Montefalco, which Marco created for the 25th anniversary of the company, the winery catapulted itself to the top of the Italian wine producers. The 25 Anni won over ten times in a row the three glasses in the Gambero Rosso. In addition, Caprai was founded in 2006 by the Gambero Rosso"Winery of the year" ...and I've chosen the best. SUPERIORE.DE

"Even the beginnings of the history of the Caprai House, which also rewrote the history of the Montefalco and Sagrantino growing areas, were astonishing. But it is no less the way in which this personal narrative is continued and enriched from year to year by new, inspiring chapters. Without many words not only a leading winery, but also a model in which managerial qualities, entrepreneurial thinking and passion unite. This being said, stylistically unique wines are created whose imitation is difficult and dangerous, intense, concentrated drops that give the best expression to the natural opulence of the terroir and its vines."Gambero Rosso 2014

"The Sagrantino grape variety and with it the whole Montefalco area owe much of their reputation to the Caprai family, which has been relying on this particular variety since the 1970s. The almost obsessive pursuit of quality has made Caprai a reference winery for the entire Italian wine industry. A novelty of the last years is the consulting activity of Michel Rolland. The multiple awarded expert seems to lead the wines to more drinking pleasure and pleasing finesse."Gambero Rosso 2018

"Marco Caprai has led the way in Montefalco for years, first and foremost through conducting and supporting diligent research on Sagrantino clones, rootstocks, training systems, optimal vine densities and a host of other factors that play an important role in the overall quality of the fruit. Consulting oenologist Attilio Pagli has also made significant contributions in maximizing the potential of these vineyards. The wines are made from low yields and aged in French oak in what is a very personal expression of this appellation."Robert Parker
