"Pleasing nose of black cherries, flanked by plum notes and tobacco; polished attack, finely chiselled acidity, fruity and mineral finish." Vinum
"One of the best-balanced 2020s, Gracciano della Seta's Vino Nobile is discreetly padded with an abundance of dark, fleshy cherry, yet remains straightforward and sculptural. The tannins are slightly steely but yield smoothly, while zesty, citrusy acidity provides graceful support. Nuances of forest, leather and mint interweave with notes of orange that linger." Decanter
"Dried-herb and olive-stone notes to this savory red, mingling with cherries and blood oranges. It’s medium-bodied, juicy and nicely balanced. Fine tannins. Fresh and tasty finish." James Suckling

Intense ruby red Vino Nobile Riserva with a spicy bouquet of aromas of dried fruit, cinnamon, cloves and liquorice. Smooth on the palate with a variety of nuances, beautiful fullness, structure and intensity, supple tannins. Very elegant pleasure at an excellent price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich ruby red colour with a slightly brightening rim. Ripe sour cherries, plums and blueberries on the nose, followed by spicy notes. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with rather young tannins and a lingering finish. Rich ruby red colour with a slightly lighter rim. Ripe sour cherries, plums and blueberries on the nose, followed by spicy notes. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with rather young tannins and a lingering finish." Falstaff
"An air of crushed chalk and white pepper gives way to red plums and sage as the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva opens in the glass. It's velvety-smooth yet energetic in feel, with a wave of ripe raspberry and blueberry fruit carried across a core of vibrant acidity. The 2019 finishes harmonious and long, leaving the mouth watering for more, even as grippy tannins tug at the palate." Vinous
"Walnuts, bitter chocolate, cherries and tapenade on the nose. Savory and chewy, medium-bodied, with firm tannins and a compact, meaty finish." James Suckling
"A proper Riserva, this could do with another year or so in the cellar and will have mid-term ageing potential. A selection from the Casale vineyard, one of four estate plots, on a loose clay and sandy soil with limestone, it's typically the last to be harvested. The seductive nose shows a subtle hint of vanilla mixed with heady truffle and cedar nuances. There is lovely purity of cherry and plum on the ample, concentrated palate, while dry, commanding tannins give plenty of structure." Decanter

It is aromatically persistent, complex and nuanced in its balance. The winemaking team has done everything right here. SUPERIORE.DE

This is elegant, nearly velvety in feel, with medium-bodied weight and polished red and black fruits. It tapers off with a pleasantly bitter tinge and is slightly chewy, leaving a coating of sweet tannins to frame the experience quite nicely." Vinous
"In the far east of the Vino Nobile zone, the La Braccesca vineyard borders Umbria. The vineyards extend over 340 hectares and reach as far as the neighbouring municipality of Cortona. Expressive aromas combine subtle oak spice with the scent of lavender and orange against a background of dark red cherry. On the palate, it is round, rich and velvety and is carried by a juicy acidity. The sandy tannins give the wine its shape and show a strong spiciness on the finish. Clean and well-defined." Decanter
"Aromas of ripe mulberries and blackberries with dark spices, burnt orange peel and earth. Full and structured with a deep core of ripe dark fruit and firm, chalky tannins. Long lasting finish." James Suckling

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Salcheto's sparkling garnet-red Vino Nobile delights us with its fragrant aroma of dried plum and a hint of cinnamon and clove. Lots of present fruit on the palate, with a fine, sweet melting flavour and a long finish. An authentic and pleasantly elegant organic wine from the heart of the Montepulciano region that is ready to drink when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Nobile di Montepulciano opens with a classic blend of dusty black cherries, cedar shavings, worn leather and sour citrus notes. It has a soft texture and a cool note, with savoury red fruits and cedar spice accompanied by lively acidity. It finishes long and lightly textured, leaving a bitter aftertaste as the violet florals fade inside." Vinous
"Ripe flavours of preserved cherries, plums, leather, almonds and loam, underpinned by a dense layer of tannins. Stays within the boundaries and lingers nicely." Wine Spectator
"Rich, spicy red fruit with iron, liquorice, dry earth and orange peel. Firm, dusty tannins with dry, spiced berries on a structured, medium to full-bodied palate. Good finish with mineral notes on the final. Sangiovese. From organically grown grapes. Long-lasting." James Suckling
"Finesse instead of power, a finesse that refines the qualities of outstanding fruit. Floral on the nose, with notes of peony, red blackberry and pepper leaf, nutmeg on the finish. The first impression is confirmed on the palate, iodised, crisp, persistent, with a fruity finish." Luca Gardini
"The nose is defined by a delicate sweetness, as undertones of clove and orange peel bring nuance to leading aromas of vanilla and strawberry, followed by a crack of black pepper. On the palate, fruit leads the way, but a hint of that bitter, spicy element perseveres all the way through the warm, acidic finish." Wine Enthusiast

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Avignonesi's aromatic classic has a lean to medium body, seamless tannins and a delicious flavour profile. Intense ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections. On the nose, aromas of red berries, cherry, eucalyptus and pomegranate and the unmistakable scent of violets so typical of the Sangiovese grape, with a hint of vanilla and Mediterranean herbal spice in the background. Well-balanced on the palate, with beautiful primary notes of ripe cherry and plum. The warm, ethereal body is embedded in a dense tannin structure and leads into a long, persistent finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Nobile di Montepulciano 2019 is a real treat for the nose. Sweet spices complement the bright flavours of raspberries and cherries. It envelops the palate with a silky texture balanced by juicy acidity, while red berries with a hint of rose pour over the palate. It leaves a gentle coating of fine tannins and retains a lovely energy as the red candy notes fade." Vinous
"A flavoursome and quite nuanced Vino Nobile, showing orange peel, plums, grapefruit, minerals and subtle spices. A hint of mineral salinity on the palate with firm, taut tannins and a clean, pithy finish." James Suckling
"The subtle, layered nose features festive aromas of hibiscus, cranberry, orange slices and pine. The Christmas party kicks into full swing on the palate, with dark chocolate, cloves and pine cones joining the fun, as acid prances around chalky tannins. A promising sign for what's to come from this producer." Wine Enthusiast

“Sotto Casa” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2019
The Nobile Riserva, a cru from the historic Sotto Casa vineyard, deserves a place in the list of the best, with its delicate aromas of cherries and spices that set the mood for intense, flavoursome drinking pleasure. A powerful, elegant representative of its type with well-ripened fruit on the final and a delightful portion of saltiness on the aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, radiant ruby red colour. On the nose, initially a hint of Siegallack, subtle hints of sugared cherries, slightly smoky, medium expression overall. Creamy fruit on the palate enveloped by slightly broad tannins, with a fine dry finish." Falstaff
"The 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva Sotto Casa is dusty and floral. A whiff of crushed rocks gives way to dried roses, cedar shavings and musky red currants. This is a powerful and complex effort, youthfully dense and poised, with silken textures and masses of tart wild berries underscored by saline minerals and spice. This flexes its tannic muscle through the finale, structured and coating the entire palate, as a beguiling sour citrus note adds contrast. The Sotto Casa is the only Vino Nobile at Boscarelli that blends international varieties with Sangiovese." Vinous
"This has a rather glossy, deep ruby hue and the orange tinge is not even developed yet. Very youthful and a lot less savory than most of the Boscarelli offerings showing the usual mineral attraction, but this comes with a little more fruit, spices and even plushness. Deep cherry, plum, mussel and oyster shell characters on the nose follow through to a full-bodied palate drenched with firm, chalky tannins. The impressive structure ends in a neat, mineral finish. Almost a bit embryonic now despite its more eclectic and probably less traditional style. Wait two to three years before opening the bottle." James Suckling

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018 (BIO) · MAGNUM
Salcheto's garnet-red sparkling Vino Nobile delights us with fragrant dried plum and a hint of cinnamon and clove. On the palate, much present fruit, fine, sweet melting in the long finish. An authentic and pleasantly elegant organic wine from the heart of the Montepulciano region. SUPERIORE.DE
"Appealing bouquet of black cherries and herbs; powerful texture, the acidity invigorating and in harmony with the tannins, finishes long. Convinces with its powerful fruity style. Goes well with game dishes." Vinum
"Brilliantly shining garnet red. At first smell, rich spicy notes of rosemary, black olives and cedar, then ripe blueberry and cassis. Fills the mouth completely, presents itself in a stoffig woven tannin dress, with good structure, compact, pithy, with some persistence in the finish." Falstaff
"A core of black cherry, plum and blueberry fruit is augmented by earth, tobacco and rosemary in this chunky red, which is balanced, with a light granular quality to the tannins. The herb elements linger, along with the fruit." Wine Spectator
"Salchetto’s launching pad Vino Nobile is crafted from the estate’s organically farmed 15 hectares and is the choicest selection of grapes. Appealing from the get-go, this 100% Sangiovese smells of summer’s bounty with cherry, plum, blackberry and strawberry. Hints of flint, iron and garden herbs provide nuance. The palate is fruit-laden but not heavy, and there is lovely freshness. Dry, linear tannins are sandy in texture and speak to the wine’s serious side." Decanter
"This superb estate is basically a guarantee of great, delicious wines, even in difficult vintages as this savory red proves. It opens with heady aromas of wild berry, truffle, blue flower and dark spice while the racy, polished palate features juicy strawberry, blood orange, licorice and cocoa. It's balanced and focused, with vibrant acidity and taut, refined tannins." Wine Enthusiast

“Costa Grande” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018
A little bit of everything, but never too much of a good thing. One of the most complex Nobiles we have ever tasted. Delicate red fruit with a pinch of sweetness and a floral aroma, underpinned by some tobacco and raspberry. Clear cherry flavour on the palate, plus a wonderful spiciness with that subtle sweetness in the background again. A finesse-rich and harmonious final whets the appetite for the next glass. Very successful and full of precision! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a delicately brightening rim. Fine leather aroma on the nose, delicate roasted malt flavour, fine strawberries on the finish. Very radiant on the palate, juicy, with clear red berry fruit and a powerful final with elegant spicy notes." Falstaff
"Subtle yet complex bouquet with good depth coming from red fruits and spicy flavours. A certain stony minerality adds a touch of austerity to the plums and cherries. Medium to full body with chalky tannins. Transparent and delicious." James Suckling
"The Boscarelli 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Costa Grande is amply rich and fleshed out with dark fruit, tarry smoke and toasted spice. This is a savory wine with a heavy center of gravity that would work next to braised meats or roasts. The wine remains mid-weight in stye, but the texture is velvety and rich." Vinous
"This soft red wine, made exclusively from Sangiovese, opens with aromas of ripe wild berries, undergrowth, violets and dark spices. On the polished palate, refined tannins accompany baked plums, liquorice and a hint of espresso." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Costa Grande is incredibly pretty, as crushed stone gives way to bright cherries, dusty violets, mint and a hint of animal musk. The wine feels round and supple, but gains traction from mineralised red fruits. The finish is lightly structured yet lively. Although the 2018 has only just been bottled, it shows wonderfully and is full of potential. I love it." Vinous
"This ripe and almost opulent red wine shows flavours of black cherries, blackberries, violets, iron and spices. There is a hint of wild herbs that intertwine on the long, dense finish. A tantalising expression of fruit supported by a solid structure." Wine Spectator

“Asinone” Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
Its dense, intense colour has a lush bouquet, whose fruity hints of blackberries, sour cherries and blueberries are given an elegant touch by the delicate, very subtle wood spice. In the rich, firm flavour, the smooth tannin is well fused with the structure. SUPERIORE.DE
"Intriguing bouquet of ripe cherries, dried flowers, herbs and subtle spices; precise on the palate, the acid accents in harmony with the excellently polished tannins, the final finely chiselled and persistent with lots of fruit, including balsamic notes. A seducer with a lot of noblesse." Vinum
"The 2020 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone holds the attention firmly with a mentholated mix of crushed blackberries, cedar shavings and a cocoa dusting. This smooths across the palate with soft and plaint textures and ripe wild berry fruits as a gentle coating of sweet tannins mounts toward the close. The 2020 leaves the palate stained with primary concentration, finishing long. This warm vintage Asinone will be the perfect option while waiting for the more structured vintages to mature." Vinous
"An exciting and mineral expression with fine spices and pure red berries. The palate is transparent and restrained, with fine tannins that linger with minerals and berries in a long, intense finish." James Suckling
"A powerful, straightforward red wine with plenty of blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant flavours to balance the dense tannins. Lively, energetic and balanced, with a long, rich finish that reflects the dark fruits and adds a hint of tobacco." Wine Spectator
"From the vineyard of the same name, a wine with an international orientation, but without blinkers, on the contrary, with great personality. Dense nose of undergrowth fruits, blackberries in the leading role, in the mouth it shines with its balance, salty tannins, great juiciness and a balsamic finish with excellent persistence." Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO) · MAGNUM
Fine Nobile Riserva with spicy notes of clove and cinnamon on a clear fruit base of wild berries. Soft, full-bodied and with delicate tannins on the palate, it finishes long and dynamic. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red. Expressive and fragrant on the nose, with notes of rose hips, pomegranate, blood oranges, plus red berries, wild berry syrup, reverberating on mint and balsamic notes. On the palate polished and juicy, with a clear fruit core wrapped in precisely placed tannin, noble use of wood supports the ensemble, great length." Falstaff
"The 2018 Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is dark and brooding in the glass. Dried black cherries, dusty florals and savory spice hints form its bouquet. This displays ample depth with silky textures lifted by saline-tinged acids as cooling herbal tones and bright red fruits settle upon the senses. It finishes structured and long with a staining of primary concentration and licorice notes that linger on." Vinous
"For Salcheto’s Riserva, winemaker Michele Manelli adds a small percentage of dried grapes during fermentation with the goal of increasing weight and concentration as well as achieving more mature, resolved tannins. Aromas are ripe and upfront, leading with oak notes before mint chocolate meets macerated cherry. Wood takes a back seat on the palate, where rich fruit and supple tannins fill the mouth. The vintage’s fresh acidity keeps this elegant." Decanter
"Marked by vanilla and resinous oak, this red delivers plum, blackberry and iron flavors. Rigid now, with fine depth and a lingering spicy finish. Give this a year or two to absorb the oak." Wine Spectator
"Savory dark spices, brown walnuts and some tar to the dried orange peel and earthy plums. Full-bodied with tight tannins and a rather mineral-driven center palate. Savory and long." James Suckling

Just 3,500 bottles are produced from the oldest vines of the Salco vineyard and are only sold in the best vintages. In the glass, we are delighted by an extremely elegant Sangiovese with a very harmonious texture and very classic, earthy-spicy notes. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cherries and chocolate jump off the nose before earthy aromas take over, from mushrooms to dirt to underbrush and moss. The palate echoes these notes, carrying them through a long mocha-infused finish with rigid, durable tannins." Wine Enthusiast
"The haunting dark and floral 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano Vecchie Viti del Salco combines exotic spices with crushed dried flowers, spiced cherries and ginger nuances. It is extremely silky, with no hard edges in sight. A polished wave of ripe red berries washes over the palate, leaving a hint of minerality and fine tannins. “Il Nocio dei Boscarelli” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2017
Il Nocio, a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from a single vineyard, impressively shows the genuine essence of the Sangiovese grape and has also been one of the region's quality leaders for years. Deep red, intense aromas of sour cherry, red currant, rose blossom, violets and sweet spices. Dense, juicy and elegant on the palate, with fresh pure fruit and smooth polished tannin. Lively mineral and floral nuances in the very long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. Very peppery on the nose, of wild berry tea, a hint of mint and dried rose petal. Full and very savoury on the palate, spreads pleasantly over the tongue, with a slightly balsamic undertone, compact tannin on the final, powerful finish." Falstaff
"Raspberries, redcurrants, raw mushrooms and fresh herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins and bright acidity. Silky yet rather firm texture and a flavorful finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2022." James Suckling
"The 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Nocio is dusty and floral yet youthfully restrained, with bright cherries and nuances of wood spice delicately lifting from the glass. Its textures are silky and enveloping. This wine is youthfully lean and quite bassy in feel, with ripe berries contrasted by brisk acids and salty minerals. There’s so much power left in reserve here, as the 2017 tapers off long and structured with fine-grained tannins. Lose your bottles in the cellar for at least two to three years. This is a standout of the vintage." Vinous
"A picture of elegance and finesse, yet with a solid underlying structure, this red evokes violet, black cherry, black currant and Tuscan scrub flavors. The refined tannins are well-integrated, and the long aftertaste adds a mineral element and a touch of oak. Expansive and complex." Wine Spectator

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2019 (BIO) · MAGNUM in OWC

“Salco” Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2016 (BIO) MAGNUM in OWC
Racy and seductive Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Very intense bouquet of fruit, tobacco, herbs and toasted notes. Voluminous and harmoniously round on the palate, silky-sweet tannins and excellent length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark luminous garnet red with an impenetrable core. Opens in the bouquet on boiled down blackberry, plum roast, also some cinnamon, wrapped in delicate mocha and dried tangerines. Stretches out a comforting dress, powerfully rich in tannin, shows tension in attack and progression, finishes slightly salty with lovely persistence." Falstaff
"A plummy nose, accented by toasted spice and licorice. Full-bodied with fine, velvety tannins. Well structured with lots of flavor that veers into the, bitter, Campari-like zone right at the end." James Suckling
"Darkly floral and alluring, the 2016 Nobile di Montepulciano Salco slowly blossoms in the glass with a display of ripe plums, clove, dried flowers and sweet tobacco. Its creamy textures are complemented by an elegant wave of ripe red and black fruits that flesh out across the palate, leaving saline-minerals and a coating of fine tannin in their wake. This tapers off long and lightly structured, leaving notes of blackberry and spice to linger long. The 2016 Salco is a beauty, yet it could use another year or two of cellaring to integrate its oak." Vinous
"Ripe plum, baking spice, menthol and new leather are just some of the aromas you'll find on this fantastic Sangiovese. On the elegantly structured, delicious palate, notes of ground pepper and licorice accent a core of juicy black cherry and crushed raspberry set against a backbone of taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it nicely balanced." Wine Enthusiast
"This features a core of ripe, sweet plum, blackberry and spice flavors, accented by earth, wild herbs and tobacco. Though dense and muscular, there's also a beam of vibrant acidity that keeps this focused and fresh." Wine Spectator

“Poggetto di Sopra” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
A few years ago, six leading DOCG wineries joined forces to form the "nobile alliance": Salcheto, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Dei, Boscarelli and Avignonesi. They pursue the ambitious goal of bringing Montepulciano's terroir to perfection in the bottle. Leading this project are Ashleigh Seymour and Matteo Giustiniani, the winemakers of Avignonesi. They not only monitor the quality of the Sangiovese grapes, which all grow in the Poggetto di Sopra vineyard, but are also responsible for the vinification in the cellar.
Poggetto di Sopra comes from a single plot of vines planted in 1978. The alkaline clay soil of the single vineyard Poggetto di Sopra is crossed by a vein of blue sodium clay. It is rich in silt, limestone and prehistoric marine sediments. All of this creates a tension in the wine that is as delicate as it is intense.
Sparkling ruby with garnet reflections. Impressive aromas of blueberry, cherry, clove and thyme on the nose. Dense and multi-layered on the palate, yet powerfully forward, with a clear focus on ripe fruit, minerality and with a tightly woven, soft tannin like velvet and silk. This archetype of an energetic Nobile spans a wide arc, revealing its noble origins with every sip. Beautiful potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle roasted spices are chiselled to the pomegranate and grapefruit notes with some savory berries, sage and crushed stones. The taut and transparent center palate is followed by a long and minerally ethereal finish. Beguilingly light in form, but intense with flavors. “Pinot” finesse here." James Suckling

Limitation of 6 articles per customer“Le Caggiole” Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018
The first Caggiole was launched in 1988 and disappeared again as early as 1995 because the flagship Asinone simply met consumers' tastes better. Today - after more than 20 years of abstinence - the Nobile Le Caggiole is back on the market as the new first wine of the house. Estate owner Dott. Federico Carletti has dedicated this masterpiece to his wife Anna - setting a new benchmark for Poliziano and the entire denomination. We are very pleased to present this strictly limited top wine!
Salty, mineral and refined. Le Caggiole represents the terroir and the grape variety Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) like no other wine of the house. It is almost light-footed, svelte, delicate and at the same time very fine. It is the result of many years of work in selecting the right Sangiovese clones in the single vineyard of the same name, Le Caggiole, which consists of 4 plots. SUPERIORE.DE
"Radiant, elegant ruby red with a delicately lightening rim. Expressive and fragrant nose of ripe heart cherries, wild strawberries, noble use of wood and fine spices in the background. Very polished and juicy on the palate, tightly woven tannins coat the hearty fruit, radiant and finesse-rich, still a little grippy on the final." Falstaff
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Le Caggiole lifts up with a display like human catnip. A pleasant air of vanilla custard accentuates sweet smoke, grilled sage, cocoa and rum-soaked cherries. It’s silky and polished in feel yet finessed with an almost weightless aura, showing decidedly ripe plum and hints of candied citrus to balance. The 2018 finishes long and gently tannic, with inner tobacco and sweet herbal tones lingering incredibly long. While the nose is a bit candied in personality, the 2018 possesses fantastic harmony within. I'm very interested to see what a few years of cellaring might do." Vinous
"Features a fine balance between the cherry, currant, earth, wild thyme and eucalyptus flavors, with a firm backbone of tannins and juicy acidity. Well-delineated and long, this red is complex and refined." Wine Spectator
"A firm and fine Vino Nobile with cherry, berry and lightly earthy aromas. Crushed stone. Medium body. Linear finish. A little tight now. Give it two or three years. Try after 2024." James Suckling

Salty, mineral and refined. Le Caggiole represents the terroir and the Sangiovese grape variety (Prugnolo Gentile) like no other wine from the estate. It is almost light-footed, svelte, delicate and at the same time very fine. It is the result of many years of work selecting the right Sangiovese clones in the single vineyard of the same name, Le Caggiole, which consists of 4 parcels. SUPERIORE.DE
"A supple red that reveals cherry and raspberry flavours with a firm tannic base. Robust and lively, showing iron, earth and tobacco details as this ambles along on the finish." Wine Spectator
"This wine is really refined and flavoursome, with a slightly mineral note of zesty oranges, nutmeg, sage and berries. Juicy and intense on the palate with fine tannins and a vertical yet ethereal finish. Excellent concentration and a firm grip at the end, even if the finish lingers. Drink now." James Suckling
"The Poliziano 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Le Caggiole comes from a special 14-hectare vineyard site with sandy soils of ancient marine origin. The wine carries its significant oak spice very nicely, thanks to the extracted and generous black fruit found at its core. This is a balanced, full-bodied expression that embraces contemporary Montepulciano winemaking." Wine Advocate
"The 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Le Caggiole is intense, spicy and complex. In the glass, it exudes a bouquet of crushed ash stones, dried black cherries, cedar wood and rosemary. This wine is pure elegance, deep and structured, with a dense wave of ripe red and black fruits rushing over a core of savoury minerals and vibrant acidity. The finish is long and structured, with a lingering concentration that promises a steady evolution. This is the best version of Le Caggiole I have ever tasted. A wine for the cellar." Vinous

"Bright, baroque ruby red colour. Radiant nose of ripe forest fruit, cranberries, cherries, with some leather in the aftertaste and light spice. Opens up on the palate with elegant use of wood and polished red cranberry fruit, with beautiful juiciness, firm pressure on the finish, minimally broad on the finish, already accessible." Falstaff
"Packs ample flesh, wrapped around flavors of black cherry, blackberry, plum, cedar, earth and tobacco. Features flashes of juniper and wild rosemary that dapple its impressive length, while dusty tannins prevail on the lengthy finish." Wine Spectator
"Dark and earthy in the glass, the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Nocio smolders up with a blend of crushed ashen stones and savory herbs, underbrush and camphor. This is a round effort, with a mineral tinge up front and depths of red and black fruits that slowly saturate the palate toward the close. A balsamic twang punctuates the finish, combined with a web of fine-grained tannins as the 2019 tapers off long and structured, simply begging for the cellar. This is a classic in the making." Vinous
"Tarry berries, black mineral, dried orange rind and mussels on the nose. I like the chalky tannin structure and the pithiness here that makes you think of the build of a fine Serralunga d'Alba Barolo. Tight, bold and very austere, for sure, but so attractive and gastronomic at the same time. The tannins make you feel hungry. Give it time to unwind." James Suckling
"Three hectares just over 45 years old, flagship wine for Nobile di Montepulciano in the world. Nose of marasca cherries under spirits, mulberry, great balsamic cue and hints of undergrowth. The sip is vigorous, iodine-rich, juicy and at the same time complex, crisp, with great persistence." Luca Gardini

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018 (BIO) · Double MAGNUM in OWC

“Asinone” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018 · MAGNUM in OWC
Within its dense, intense hue lies a lush bouquet whose fruity allusions to blackberries, sour cherries and blueberries are given an elegant touch by the delicate, very subtle wood spice. In the rich, firm palate, the smooth tannin is well blended with the structure. SUPERIORE.DE
"Exceedingly elegant Sangiovese from one of the best Vino Nobile sites: smells of raspberries and flowers; spot-on texture with polish, tight tannins and vivid acidity, of great length and with a future. Can mature." Vinum
"Bright ruby red. Noble, inviting nose, of ripe forest fruits and rich cherries, carried by a gentle spicy tone, reverberating of light leather and tea, complex. On the palate juicy, clear and with tight tannin, salty undertone, pulls clear and long over the tongue, with persistence." Falstaff
"There's richness and depth to this red, whose cherry, plum and mineral flavors are framed in light, toasty oak. Refined and open-knit, with a firm, lingering, savory aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone shows the more delicate side of this cru. Crushed rose petal, red cherry, mint, leather and dried herbs are all very nicely lifted. Gracious and silky on the palate, with superb balance, the 2018 Asinone is a winner from Poliziano. Readers will find a Vino Nobile that decidedly favors elegance over heft." Vinous
"Dark-cherry aromas with nutmeg and flowers follow through to a full body with firm, linear tannins that are polished and beautiful at the end. Succulent and attractive now, but will age nicely." James Suckling

Even if the Vino Nobile is not exactly one of the best-known of Italian red wines, it still deserves the glamour and reputation of the historic noble wine with which high society, popes and even presidents have filled their wine cellars since the 16th century.
Because this Tuscan red wine could only be produced and drunk by the nobility in and around the medieval Renaissance town of Montepulciano, it was called Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which means "noble wine from Montepulciano". This was one of the favourite wines of the Vatican and US President Thomas Jefferson and should not be confused with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from the Abruzzo region in central Italy.
A Vino Nobile comes only from the hill town of Montepulciano in south-eastern Tuscany, where viticulture was documented as early as 789. Here, the surrounding sandy and clayey vineyards were planted with the local Sangiovese, which is also called Prugnolo Gentile by the locals. This grape variety determines the main share in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (at least 70%) and since 2010 can be blended to a maximum of 30% with the varieties Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo and some Bordeaux greats such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For traditional freshness, a small proportion of white grape varieties such as Trebbiano or Malvasia Bianca Lunga may be added to the blend.
After fermentation, the Vino Nobile must mature for at least two years, because the young wine is often very tart and closed. After some time in the wooden barrel, it can develop into an elegant, velvety red wine with a medium structure. After that, it smells of dark, ripe berries, plums and quite spicy notes of tobacco and leaves. After three years of ageing, the Nobile is labelled Riserva and can be stored for another five to ten years.
Interest in foreign grape varieties also brought French oak barriques to Montepulciano in the 1990s, creating two distinct styles of wine: The modernists blend their Nobile with the French grape varieties and preferably age them in small barrique barrels (225l) to achieve concise wood notes. The traditionalists, on the other hand, use either only Sangiovese or a small proportion of the local Italian varieties mentioned above. These wines are then aged for a longer period in traditional, large Slavonian oak barrels (2,800 to 7,000l).
Indeed, there seems to be a joyful return to this classic, pure-toned Sangiovese style. Many winemakers are producing an increasingly juicy, varietal Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is undoubtedly one of the top three Tuscan Sangiovese wines, along with Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. Although they are produced from the same grape variety, however, these two better-known red wines are difficult to compare with the Vino Nobile. Because of its noticeable tannin and long ageing period, a good Vino Nobile di Montepulciano resembles a rich, powerful style of wine that can never be as fruity and light as a young Chianti Classico, but is nowhere near as expensive as a Brunello di Montalcino. So anyone who has lost their heart to Tuscan Sangiovese wines will not be able to avoid enjoying this noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. SUPERIORE.DE
