“Silineo” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019
Rich and dense ruby red, open and accessible nose with beautiful blackberry fruit, light tea notes in the background. Also in the taste a beautiful fruit, reminiscent of ripe, dark cherries, then hearty tannin and a round finish. You simply can't get more classic Vino Nobile for this price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep aromas of black cherries and herbs; juicy on the palate, the firm tannins form a symbiosis with the acidity, combines polish and character into the long final." Vinum
"Dark, powerful ruby. Shows emphatically fragrant notes of cedar, boxwood and pine needles on the nose, some lemon. Juicy fruit on the nose, then opens up with slightly drying tannin on the final." Falstaff
"The bouquet of the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Silìneo opens as if chiseling into an ashen stone to find a mix of blackcurrants and exotic curries. It has a soft texture, is airier and more refined than expected, with juicy blackberry fruit accompanied by sour citrus and savoury herbal notes. Grippy tannins linger under hints of violet and lavender as the 2019 finishes structured but not austere. The Silìneo is mainly Sangiovese with a little Mammolo and Corolino." Vinous
"Aromas of ripe berries and cherries with vanilla undertones. It is full and juicy with a big palate and a creamy finish. Multi-layered, if a little old-fashioned." James Suckling

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Discreet ruby red with light reflections. Warm, well-dosed bouquet of wild berries, cherries and some smoke. On the palate fine-meshed tannin, in addition much juice and fruit in the core, floral and spicy notes, compact. A fine salty vein in the harmonious finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very typical, elegant, with polished tannin and full of fruit charm, sour cherry, some chocolate, sweet fruit melt, round." Weinwisser
"One of the best balanced 2020s, Gracciano della Seta's Vino Nobile is discreetly cushioned with an abundance of dark, fleshy cherry yet remains straightforward and plastic. The tannins are slightly steely but give way smoothly, while the zesty, citrusy acidity offers graceful support. Hints of forest, leather and mint interweave with notes of orange that linger." Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)
Intense ruby red Vino Nobile Riserva with a spicy bouquet of aromas of dried fruits, cinnamon, cloves and liquorice. Smooth on the palate with diverse nuances, beautiful fullness, structure and intensity, supple tannins. Very elegant pleasure at an excellent price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ruby red. The nose reveals notes of ripe cherries, blueberries and raspberries, followed by spicy notes and wood. Very pleasant on the palate, compact and juicy, with young but well-integrated tannins. The finish is fruity and persistent." Falstaff
"Camphor, forest berry and rosemary aromas shape the enticing nose on this fragrant red. Elegantly structured, the lithe palate offers sour cherry, orange zest and star anise alongside fine-grained tannins and bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is understated and floral, with lavender notes giving way to red plums and brown spice. It washes across the palate with ease, guided by juicy acidity. A burst of inner sweetness helps to balance its tart cherry-berry fruits. This finishes with admirable length and potent while maintaining incredible energy as hints of licorice and inner rose fade. The 2018 is already showing beautifully today but is full of medium-term cellaring potential." Vinous
"Savory orange, cinnamon, earthy-berry and new-leather character extends to a medium to full body with firm yet creamy tannins. Still supple, with some dark spices and cherries in the finish." James Suckling

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2016
Wonderfully fragrant, fruity-floral bouquet. The taste is reminiscent of plums and cherries with a fine vanilla-spicy component and clear, very pleasant acidity and polished tannins. Clear fruit aromas, enormous velvety and a long finish emphasise the harmony of this Nobile Riserva. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich shining brown-red with minimal cloudiness. First smell of rich ripe cherry fruit, then rosehip and also juniper berries, then delicate leather spice in the background. Lively palate entry, stretches out a wide dress, compact and medium-bodied on the palate, tightens up a bit on the back end and finishes with some pressure on sweet fruit." Falstaff
"A medium-bodied, structured red with aromas and flavors of cloves, cedar and dried cherries. Hint of pine. Well integrated tannins. The oak spices blend in nicely." James Suckling
"The 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is dark with arching violet-tinged florals, hints of plum and Tuscan dust. Its textures are silky, communicating undeniable elegance, with a polished display of mineral-tinged wild berries contrasted by hints of sour citrus. What balance, tapering off lightly structured, with a purple and blue-toned array of residual fruits and inner herbal tones lingering on and on. This is classic but in need of some time to fully come together. The Riserva hails from Fattoria del Cerro’s higher-elevation vineyards that contain a high percentage of pebbles, fossils and shells." Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Salcheto's garnet-red sparkling Vino Nobile delights us with fragrant dried plum and a hint of cinnamon and clove. On the palate, much present fruit, fine, sweet melting in the long finish. An authentic and pleasantly elegant organic wine from the heart of the Montepulciano region. SUPERIORE.DE
"A recognisable Vino Nobile with finesse! On the nose, lots of sour cherry and rum pot plums, combined with violet scents. Then there is even a lot of lilac, which resonates in the fragrance, and one immediately thinks of a chocolate dessert with cherries. On the palate, it is long and clearly drier and more elegant than the nose predicts. The tannins are well rounded. The 2 years between oak and glass have elegantly defined it. This Vino Nobile offers great drinking pleasure and otherwise it is a pleasure to discover such a sustained good winery." Vinum
"Rich ruby with a slightly brightening rim. Clearly marked nose with fine notes of fresh cherries, some violets, underpinned by cloves. Polished, finely meshed tannin characterises the course, showing juicy fruit, firm pressure in the final." Falstaff
"Dusty dried flowers, crushed rocks, lavender and red currants - all these are found when the 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano opens in the glass. The palate is flooded with a silky texture contrasted by tart wild berries and a salty sensation created by a pronounced minerality towards the end. The result is both savoury and sweet and full of savoury tension, while the 2019 finishes with a bitter cherry pit flavour." Vinous
"The 18 hectares of Vino Nobile that surround the Salcheto estate offer a picturesque view of the town of Montepulciano to the north. The self-sufficient estate is a model of true green initiatives, and the wines are among the top of the Denomination of Origin. The 2019 captures the warmth of the vintage, with sun-warmed raspberries and cherries, fragrant violets and yellow broom. It's fresh and juicy, full of concentrated, joyful fruit, while soft, suede-like tannins effortlessly lock everything in. Sounds deceptively simple, but is actually quite sophisticated." Decanter
"A fairly full-bodied Vino Nobile with dried strawberries, plums, hazelnuts and some blood orange on the nose. The fruit is juicy but the mouthfeel is round and smooth. The tannins are supportive and fine." James Suckling

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
Broad and rich, with aromas and flavours of plums, blackberries, clay and spices. La Braccescas Nobile di Montepulciano is a finely tuned, beautiful wine with all the elements in the right place. Aromatically persistent, it is complex and nuanced in its balance. The winemaking team has done everything right here. SUPERIORE.DE
"In the far east of the Vino Nobile zone, the La Braccesca vineyard borders Umbria. The vineyards extend over 340 hectares and reach as far as the neighbouring municipality of Cortona. Expressive aromas combine subtle oak spice with lavender scent and orange against a background of dark red cherry. On the palate, it is round, rich and velvety and is carried by a juicy acidity. The sandy tannins give the wine its shape and show a powerful spiciness on the finish. Clean and well defined." Decanter
"Aromas of ripe mulberries and blackberries with dark spices, burnt orange peel and earth. Full and structured with a deep core of ripe dark fruit and tight-grained, chalky tannins. Lingering finish." James Suckling

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
Brilliant ruby red with a slightly lightening rim. Impressive scent of red berries, smoke, roasted almonds and dark spices. Taut, straightforward, expressive and of beautiful length on the palate. Boscarelli's Nobile di Montepulciano, with its classic understatement, is a wonderfully precise example of its growing zone every year. SUPERIORE.DE
"Becomes fine with a little air and shows depth and finesse as well as a transparent architecture already in the bouquet, is then powerful, fleshy and with sturdy tannin, juicy on the finish." Weinwisser
"The initial notes of vanilla and cocoa are complemented by tobacco, heather and plum. On the palate, the lush, supple fruit balances the robust structure and inner firmness of the tannins. It is extended by wild black and redcurrants, and a savoury note adds interest. Satisfying and complex." Decanter
"Nuanced minerality chiselled to the ripe red berries, blood orange zest, savory plums and cherries. Medium to full body on the palate with a bone-dry, transparent middle and a tight, mineral coating of tannins. Fruity but pithy and precise, too. A joy to taste and drink already." James Suckling
"A beautiful classic Nobile, a prime example of the appellation. Notes of black cherry on the nose, then floral notes, iris and a hint of eucalyptus. In the drink tension and salty tannins, fruity-floral return and balsamic finish." Luca Gardini

Racy and seductive Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Very intense bouquet of fruit, tobacco, herbs and toasted notes. Voluminous and harmoniously round on the palate, silky-sweet tannins and excellent length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark luminous garnet red with an impenetrable core. Opens in the bouquet on boiled down blackberry, plum roast, also some cinnamon, wrapped in delicate mocha and dried tangerines. Stretches out a comforting dress, powerfully rich in tannin, shows tension in attack and progression, finishes slightly salty with lovely persistence." Falstaff
"A plummy nose, accented by toasted spice and licorice. Full-bodied with fine, velvety tannins. Well structured with lots of flavor that veers into the, bitter, Campari-like zone right at the end." James Suckling
"Darkly floral and alluring, the 2016 Nobile di Montepulciano Salco slowly blossoms in the glass with a display of ripe plums, clove, dried flowers and sweet tobacco. Its creamy textures are complemented by an elegant wave of ripe red and black fruits that flesh out across the palate, leaving saline-minerals and a coating of fine tannin in their wake. This tapers off long and lightly structured, leaving notes of blackberry and spice to linger long. The 2016 Salco is a beauty, yet it could use another year or two of cellaring to integrate its oak." Vinous
"Ripe plum, baking spice, menthol and new leather are just some of the aromas you'll find on this fantastic Sangiovese. On the elegantly structured, delicious palate, notes of ground pepper and licorice accent a core of juicy black cherry and crushed raspberry set against a backbone of taut, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it nicely balanced." Wine Enthusiast
"This features a core of ripe, sweet plum, blackberry and spice flavors, accented by earth, wild herbs and tobacco. Though dense and muscular, there's also a beam of vibrant acidity that keeps this focused and fresh." Wine Spectator

"A core of black cherry, plum and blueberry fruit is augmented by earth, tobacco and rosemary in this chunky red, which is balanced, with a light granular quality to the tannins. The herb elements linger, along with the fruit." Wine Spectator
"Salchetto’s launching pad Vino Nobile is crafted from the estate’s organically farmed 15 hectares and is the choicest selection of grapes. Appealing from the get-go, this 100% Sangiovese smells of summer’s bounty with cherry, plum, blackberry and strawberry. Hints of flint, iron and garden herbs provide nuance. The palate is fruit-laden but not heavy, and there is lovely freshness. Dry, linear tannins are sandy in texture and speak to the wine’s serious side." Decanter
"This superb estate is basically a guarantee of great, delicious wines, even in difficult vintages as this savory red proves. It opens with heady aromas of wild berry, truffle, blue flower and dark spice while the racy, polished palate features juicy strawberry, blood orange, licorice and cocoa. “Costa Grande” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018
A bit of everything, but never too much of a good thing. One of the most complex Nobiles we have ever tasted. Delicate red fruits with a pinch of sweetness and floral aroma, underpinned by some tobacco and raspberry. Clear cherry aroma on the palate, plus a wonderful spiciness with again that subtle sweetness in the background. A finesse-rich and harmonious final makes you want to drink the next glass. Very successful and full of precision! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with a gently brightening rim. In the nose with a fine leather scent, delicate roasted malt, fine strawberries in the aftertaste. On the palate then very radiant, juicy, with clear red berry fruit, ending punchily on noble spicy notes in the final." Falstaff
"Subtle yet complex bouquet with good depth coming from red fruits and spicy aromas. Some stony minerality adds a touch of austerity to the plums and cherries. Medium to full body with chalky tannins. Transparent and delicious." James Suckling
"This soft red wine, made exclusively from Sangiovese, opens with aromas of ripe wild berries, underbrush, violets and dark spices. On the polished palate, refined tannins accompany baked plums, liquorice and a hint of espresso." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Costa Grande is incredibly pretty as the grit gives way to bright cherries, dusty violets, mint and a hint of animal musk. The wine feels round and supple, but gains traction from mineral red fruits. The finish is lightly structured yet lively. Although the 2018 has just been bottled, it shows beautifully and is full of potential. I love it." Vinous
"This ripe and almost opulent red wine shows aromas of black cherries, blackberries, violets, iron and spices. There is a hint of wild herbs that intertwine on the long, dense finish. An enticing expression of fruit supported by a solid structure." Wine Spectator

"Bright ruby red with delicately brightening rims. Opens radiantly on the nose on fine nuances of ripe, dark berries, delicate graphite, some leather, inviting. On the palate with tight tannin, pithy, but also with great juiciness and fine play, spans a wide arc, firm pressure in the finish." Falstaff

"The 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone is intense with a bouquet of stone dust, dried violets, black currants and cocoa powder. This is elegance exemplified, velvety and soothing, yet energetic, with a dense wave of polished red and black fruits that wash across the palate, leaving minerals and sweet tannins to mingle toward the close. A subtle layer of sour citrus helps enliven the otherwise-structured finale as minty herbal tones slowly fade. The 2019 is a total darling and has the balance to mature beautifully in collectors’ cellars." Vinous

"A tense and mineral expression here with fine spices and pure red berries. This is transparent and understated on the palate with crumbled fine tannins that linger with the minerals and berries in a long, intense finish." James Suckling
"A burly, linear red, with ample blackberry, black cherry and black currant fruit to offset the dense tannins. Vibrant, energetic and balanced, with a long, saturated aftertaste echoing the dark fruit and adding a hint of tobacco." Wine Spectator
"From the vineyard of the same name, a wine with an international slant but never blinkered, on the contrary, with great personality. Dense nose of undergrowth fruit, blackberries in the lead, mouth that shines for its balance, salty tannins, great juiciness and finish on balsamic tones, excellent persistence." Luca Gardini

Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO) · MAGNUM
Fine Nobile Riserva with spicy notes of clove and cinnamon on a clear fruit base of wild berries. Soft, full-bodied and with delicate tannins on the palate, it finishes long and dynamic. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby red. Expressive and fragrant on the nose, with notes of rose hips, pomegranate, blood oranges, plus red berries, wild berry syrup, reverberating on mint and balsamic notes. On the palate polished and juicy, with a clear fruit core wrapped in precisely placed tannin, noble use of wood supports the ensemble, great length." Falstaff
"The 2018 Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is dark and brooding in the glass. Dried black cherries, dusty florals and savory spice hints form its bouquet. This displays ample depth with silky textures lifted by saline-tinged acids as cooling herbal tones and bright red fruits settle upon the senses. It finishes structured and long with a staining of primary concentration and licorice notes that linger on." Vinous
"For Salcheto’s Riserva, winemaker Michele Manelli adds a small percentage of dried grapes during fermentation with the goal of increasing weight and concentration as well as achieving more mature, resolved tannins. Aromas are ripe and upfront, leading with oak notes before mint chocolate meets macerated cherry. Wood takes a back seat on the palate, where rich fruit and supple tannins fill the mouth. The vintage’s fresh acidity keeps this elegant." Decanter
"Marked by vanilla and resinous oak, this red delivers plum, blackberry and iron flavors. Rigid now, with fine depth and a lingering spicy finish. Give this a year or two to absorb the oak." Wine Spectator
"Savory dark spices, brown walnuts and some tar to the dried orange peel and earthy plums. Full-bodied with tight tannins and a rather mineral-driven center palate. Savory and long." James Suckling

“Vecchie Viti del Salco” Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Just 3,500 bottles are produced from the oldest vines of the Salco vineyard and are only sold in the best vintages. In the glass, we are delighted by an extremely elegant Sangiovese with a very harmonious texture and very classic, earthy-spicy notes. SUPERIORE.DE
"The hauntingly dark and floral 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano Vecchie Viti del Salco blends exotic savory spices with crushed dried flowers, spiced cherries and ginger nuances. It’s silky to the extreme, with no hard edges in sight. A polished wave of ripe red berries rushes the palate, leaving a staining of minerality and fine tannins in its wake. The 2019 is potent and incredibly long, with a primary concentration that lasts through the long and structured finale. This is 100% Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese) from thirty-five-year-old vines, and it’s a stunner." Vinous

“Il Nocio dei Boscarelli” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2017
Il Nocio, a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from a single vineyard, impressively shows the genuine essence of the Sangiovese grape and has also been one of the region's quality leaders for years. Deep red, intense aromas of sour cherry, red currant, rose blossom, violets and sweet spices. Dense, juicy and elegant on the palate, with fresh pure fruit and smooth polished tannin. Lively mineral and floral nuances in the very long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. Very peppery on the nose, of wild berry tea, a hint of mint and dried rose petal. Full and very savoury on the palate, spreads pleasantly over the tongue, with a slightly balsamic undertone, compact tannin on the final, powerful finish." Falstaff
"Raspberries, redcurrants, raw mushrooms and fresh herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied with firm, fine tannins and bright acidity. Silky yet rather firm texture and a flavorful finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2022." James Suckling
"The 2017 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Nocio is dusty and floral yet youthfully restrained, with bright cherries and nuances of wood spice delicately lifting from the glass. Its textures are silky and enveloping. This wine is youthfully lean and quite bassy in feel, with ripe berries contrasted by brisk acids and salty minerals. There’s so much power left in reserve here, as the 2017 tapers off long and structured with fine-grained tannins. Lose your bottles in the cellar for at least two to three years. This is a standout of the vintage." Vinous
"A picture of elegance and finesse, yet with a solid underlying structure, this red evokes violet, black cherry, black currant and Tuscan scrub flavors. The refined tannins are well-integrated, and the long aftertaste adds a mineral element and a touch of oak. Expansive and complex." Wine Spectator

"Bright ruby red with a softly lightening rim. A little restrained on the nose, on the palate with a beautiful melting and elegant course, shows itself finely meshed and densely woven, then somewhat consuming on the finish." Falstaff
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Il Nocio is a bit mute today, having only been bottled a little over a week ago. Yet what it does show has me pretty excited. Here I’m finding a much prettier expression of Il Nocio, with violet florals and licorice over ripe black cherries and hints of wood spice. It’s also more lifted and precise, coasting along a core of brilliant acidity with its crisp, red berry fruits. Hints of mocha and a subtle coating of sweet tannin linger through the medium-length finale." Vinous
"A sleek and vibrant red, with black cherry, plum and earth flavors focused by vivid acidity. This has an underlying mineral element, and the aftertaste echoes fruit and earth notes. Balanced, and should be more expressive in a year or two." Wine Spectator
"A racy and subtle nose, showing minerals and dusty red berries and strawberries, together with spice, dried flowers and a hint of orange peel. This is dry, elegant and nicely austere with firm, stony tannins that round off the palate, providing a tense and chalky feel with a linear sensation. This is a pure and transparent expression of sangiovese that will improve with time. Drinkable now, but better from 2024." James Suckling

Vinified only in the best vintages and aged in 20% new and 80% used barriques, the "Grandi Annate" is certainly one of the best Nobile in the region. Sparkling, dense garnet, smells intensely of liquorice, pickled cherries and delicately of raspberries. Powerful and robust on the palate, lots of taut, present tannin. SUPERIORE.DE

“Poggetto di Sopra” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
A few years ago, six leading DOCG wineries joined forces to form the "nobile alliance": Salcheto, Poliziano, La Braccesca, Dei, Boscarelli and Avignonesi. They pursue the ambitious goal of bringing Montepulciano's terroir to perfection in the bottle. Leading this project are Ashleigh Seymour and Matteo Giustiniani, the winemakers of Avignonesi. They not only monitor the quality of the Sangiovese grapes, which all grow in the Poggetto di Sopra vineyard, but are also responsible for the vinification in the cellar.
Poggetto di Sopra comes from a single plot of vines planted in 1978. The alkaline clay soil of the single vineyard Poggetto di Sopra is crossed by a vein of blue sodium clay. It is rich in silt, limestone and prehistoric marine sediments. All of this creates a tension in the wine that is as delicate as it is intense.
Sparkling ruby with garnet reflections. Impressive aromas of blueberry, cherry, clove and thyme on the nose. Dense and multi-layered on the palate, yet powerfully forward, with a clear focus on ripe fruit, minerality and with a tightly woven, soft tannin like velvet and silk. This archetype of an energetic Nobile spans a wide arc, revealing its noble origins with every sip. Beautiful potential. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle roasted spices are chiselled to the pomegranate and grapefruit notes with some savory berries, sage and crushed stones. The taut and transparent center palate is followed by a long and minerally ethereal finish. Beguilingly light in form, but intense with flavors. “Pinot” finesse here." James Suckling

Limitation of 6 articles per customer“Le Caggiole” Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2018
The first Caggiole was launched in 1988 and disappeared again as early as 1995 because the flagship Asinone simply met consumers' tastes better. Today - after more than 20 years of abstinence - the Nobile Le Caggiole is back on the market as the new first wine of the house. Estate owner Dott. Federico Carletti has dedicated this masterpiece to his wife Anna - setting a new benchmark for Poliziano and the entire denomination. We are very pleased to present this strictly limited top wine!
Salty, mineral and refined. Le Caggiole represents the terroir and the grape variety Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) like no other wine of the house. It is almost light-footed, svelte, delicate and at the same time very fine. It is the result of many years of work in selecting the right Sangiovese clones in the single vineyard of the same name, Le Caggiole, which consists of 4 plots. SUPERIORE.DE
"Radiant, elegant ruby red with a delicately lightening rim. Expressive and fragrant nose of ripe heart cherries, wild strawberries, noble use of wood and fine spices in the background. Very polished and juicy on the palate, tightly woven tannins coat the hearty fruit, radiant and finesse-rich, still a little grippy on the final." Falstaff
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Le Caggiole lifts up with a display like human catnip. A pleasant air of vanilla custard accentuates sweet smoke, grilled sage, cocoa and rum-soaked cherries. It’s silky and polished in feel yet finessed with an almost weightless aura, showing decidedly ripe plum and hints of candied citrus to balance. The 2018 finishes long and gently tannic, with inner tobacco and sweet herbal tones lingering incredibly long. While the nose is a bit candied in personality, the 2018 possesses fantastic harmony within. I'm very interested to see what a few years of cellaring might do." Vinous
"Features a fine balance between the cherry, currant, earth, wild thyme and eucalyptus flavors, with a firm backbone of tannins and juicy acidity. Well-delineated and long, this red is complex and refined." Wine Spectator
"A firm and fine Vino Nobile with cherry, berry and lightly earthy aromas. Crushed stone. Medium body. Linear finish. A little tight now. Give it two or three years. Try after 2024." James Suckling

Even if the Vino Nobile is not exactly one of the best-known of Italian red wines, it still deserves the glamour and reputation of the historic noble wine with which high society, popes and even presidents have filled their wine cellars since the 16th century.
Because this Tuscan red wine could only be produced and drunk by the nobility in and around the medieval Renaissance town of Montepulciano, it was called Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which means "noble wine from Montepulciano". This was one of the favourite wines of the Vatican and US President Thomas Jefferson and should not be confused with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo from the Abruzzo region in central Italy.
A Vino Nobile comes only from the hill town of Montepulciano in south-eastern Tuscany, where viticulture was documented as early as 789. Here, the surrounding sandy and clayey vineyards were planted with the local Sangiovese, which is also called Prugnolo Gentile by the locals. This grape variety determines the main share in the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (at least 70%) and since 2010 can be blended to a maximum of 30% with the varieties Canaiolo, Colorino, Mammolo and some Bordeaux greats such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. For traditional freshness, a small proportion of white grape varieties such as Trebbiano or Malvasia Bianca Lunga may be added to the blend.
After fermentation, the Vino Nobile must mature for at least two years, because the young wine is often very tart and closed. After some time in the wooden barrel, it can develop into an elegant, velvety red wine with a medium structure. After that, it smells of dark, ripe berries, plums and quite spicy notes of tobacco and leaves. After three years of ageing, the Nobile is labelled Riserva and can be stored for another five to ten years.
Interest in foreign grape varieties also brought French oak barriques to Montepulciano in the 1990s, creating two distinct styles of wine: The modernists blend their Nobile with the French grape varieties and preferably age them in small barrique barrels (225l) to achieve concise wood notes. The traditionalists, on the other hand, use either only Sangiovese or a small proportion of the local Italian varieties mentioned above. These wines are then aged for a longer period in traditional, large Slavonian oak barrels (2,800 to 7,000l).
Indeed, there seems to be a joyful return to this classic, pure-toned Sangiovese style. Many winemakers are producing an increasingly juicy, varietal Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which is undoubtedly one of the top three Tuscan Sangiovese wines, along with Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino. Although they are produced from the same grape variety, however, these two better-known red wines are difficult to compare with the Vino Nobile. Because of its noticeable tannin and long ageing period, a good Vino Nobile di Montepulciano resembles a rich, powerful style of wine that can never be as fruity and light as a young Chianti Classico, but is nowhere near as expensive as a Brunello di Montalcino. So anyone who has lost their heart to Tuscan Sangiovese wines will not be able to avoid enjoying this noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. SUPERIORE.DE
