      Shortly after the turn of the millennium, Avignonesi planted four new wine plots, which after long research and experimentation were identified as the best to produce the future cru-mobiles of the house. Their names are Banditella, Caprile, El Grasso and Oceano. Each of them gives an exciting impression of the complex terroir around the small town of Montepulciano and the results impressively demonstrate the potential of the region, which has long been in the shadow of Montalcino.

      La Banditella comes from soils of maritime origin, rich in clay, silt and limestone. The vines grow at about 320 m above sea level in a northern orientation. SUPERIORE.DE

      "One of five limited production, single-vineyard offerings from Avignonesi, the north-facing Banditella vineyard is the last to ripen. It sits at 300 to 320 metres above sea level and the soil is sandy with abundant pebbles and varying degrees of calcium-carbonate. This is a fragrant, vertical wine with nuances of rosehip, violets and mint, along with refreshing acidity asserting itself throughout. Though the tannins aren't immense, they are firm and powdery in texture. The subtle rustic edge remains charming and a saline finish lingers with herb blossoms." Decanter

Today - after more than 20 years of abstinence - the Nobile Le Caggiole is again on the market as the new first wine of the house.

      It is salty, mineral and refined. It represents the terroir and the grape variety Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) like no other wine of the house. It is light on its feet, svelte, delicate and very refined. It is the result of many years of work with the selection of the right Sangiovese clones in the homonymous single vineyard Le Caggiole, which consists of 4 plots.

      Just 3,500 bottles from the yield of the oldest vines of the Salco vineyard are sold with beautiful labels in a fancy 3-bottle box. In the glass, we are delighted by an extremely elegant Sangiovese with a very harmonious texture and very classic, earthy-spicy notes. SUPERIORE.DE

      "Dark luminous, elegant and deep ruby red. Spicy-meaty nose at first, opens on classy rosemary notes, dried tomato, then lovely cherry. Punchy on the palate with tightly woven tannin, tense, salty mineral on the back end, great length." Falstaff

      "From Salcheto's 2-hectare Salco vineyard, the Vecchie Viti is a selection of the oldest vines, which are upwards of 30 years old. After ageing in a combination of large cask and small tonneaux, this spends an additional 2 years in bottle before release. Yet it is still very nascent in expression. Smoke and mint emerge slowly weaving through wild berries. There is an irony undertow on the palate which is dense, ripe, concentrated and securely fastened by firm tannins. This is sinewy in its muscle and above all sophisticated." Decanter

The bouquet reveals plum and dried cherry aromas, but it also shows oxidative aromas of tar, spice and a touch of dried fruit or apple skin. This open-knit wine is drinking nicely right now.
