Rosso di Montepulciano DOC 2021
As always, the Rosso from Cerro is good and very drinkable. Smoky, spicy and chocolate notes in the pleasantly fruity bouquet, typical of the grape variety, juicy and persistent on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Radiant clear ruby red. Rich heart cherries adorn the nose, then black forest berries and delicate herbal spice. Discreet on the palate, distinctly soft tannin, harmonious, light-footed, juicy on the palate." Falstaff
"Some blueberry and black cherry with a steely edge. Medium body. Firm palate." James Suckling
"Like opening a fresh pack of violet candies, the 2021 Rosso di Montepulciano opens in the glass dusty and tinged with blue and purple floral perfumes. It washes across the palate, silky and pliant, with ripe wild berries and inner lavender tones. The finish is lightly tannic yet fresh, with a lingering candied blackberry note. " Vinous

“Silineo” Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019
Rich and dense ruby red, open and accessible nose with beautiful blackberry fruit, light tea notes in the background. Also in the taste a beautiful fruit, reminiscent of ripe, dark cherries, then hearty tannin and a round finish. You simply can't get more classic Vino Nobile for this price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep aromas of black cherries and herbs; juicy on the palate, the firm tannins form a symbiosis with the acidity, combines polish and character into the long final." Vinum
"Dark, powerful ruby. Shows emphatically fragrant notes of cedar, boxwood and pine needles on the nose, some lemon. Juicy fruit on the nose, then opens up with slightly drying tannin on the final." Falstaff
"The bouquet of the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Silìneo opens as if chiseling into an ashen stone to find a mix of blackcurrants and exotic curries. It has a soft texture, is airier and more refined than expected, with juicy blackberry fruit accompanied by sour citrus and savoury herbal notes. Grippy tannins linger under hints of violet and lavender as the 2019 finishes structured but not austere. The Silìneo is mainly Sangiovese with a little Mammolo and Corolino." Vinous
"Aromas of ripe berries and cherries with vanilla undertones. It is full and juicy with a big palate and a creamy finish. Multi-layered, if a little old-fashioned." James Suckling

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Discreet ruby red with light reflections. Warm, well-dosed bouquet of wild berries, cherries and some smoke. On the palate fine-meshed tannin, in addition much juice and fruit in the core, floral and spicy notes, compact. A fine salty vein in the harmonious finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Very typical, elegant, with polished tannin and full of fruit charm, sour cherry, some chocolate, sweet fruit melt, round." Weinwisser
"One of the best balanced 2020s, Gracciano della Seta's Vino Nobile is discreetly cushioned with an abundance of dark, fleshy cherry yet remains straightforward and plastic. The tannins are slightly steely but give way smoothly, while the zesty, citrusy acidity offers graceful support. Hints of forest, leather and mint interweave with notes of orange that linger." “DA-DI” Bianco Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
The name Da-Di derives from Chinese and means earth/soil. DA-DI bianco was born from owner Virginie Saverys' intuition to rediscover the vocation of the Cortona area for the production of great white wines from autochthonous grapes, and encapsulates all of Avignonesi's love of experimentation.
In the glass, it opens intensely with floral notes of wisteria and lime, white peach and gooseberry. On the palate, the approach is precise and straightforward. Lemon peel, mint and the complexity of wildflower honey emerge. The pronounced acidity makes it long and elegant. In the aftertaste, hints of flint bring back mineral notes. An exciting wine with a distinct and fresh personality. Only 2,100 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

“DA-DI” Sangiovese Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
The name Da-Di is derived from Chinese and means earth/soil. It underlines not only the organic cultivation of the vines, but also the subsequent ageing in 11 Tuscan terracotta amphorae. The result is a fascinatingly fresh, precise and varietally pure Sangiovese that is a joy to drink from the very first sip.
Intense bouquet of cherries, ripe raspberries, currants and wild strawberries. Complex, lively, almost explosive on the palate with beautifully pronounced primary aromas such as sour cherry and black cherry, accompanied by floral accents. The well-proportioned tannin and the agile fruit-acid interplay underline all the advantages of the Sangiovese grape and the long finish is introduced by a freshness and at the same time delicate sweetness that only the ageing in amphorae can produce. SUPERIORE.DE
"A pure and berry-driven nose with a subtle chalky edge to the red fruit and potpourri. Crunchy and medium-bodied on the palate with a pure and focused finish. Elegant and driven." James Suckling
"The Sangiovese Da-Di 2021 exudes a delightful bouquet of lavender, violets and crushed blackberries. The palate is washed by an intense wave of fleshy, ripe fruit, balanced by a salty minerality and tantalising acidity. The 2021 finishes concentrated and fresh, with blue and purple flowers that linger. The Da-di is a single-vineyard Sangiovese that is refined in amphora, leaving about a third of the grapes in whole clusters during fermentation. It's incredibly fun to taste this wine." Vinous

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2018 (BIO)
Intense ruby red Vino Nobile Riserva with a spicy bouquet of aromas of dried fruits, cinnamon, cloves and liquorice. Smooth on the palate with diverse nuances, beautiful fullness, structure and intensity, supple tannins. Very elegant pleasure at an excellent price. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ruby red. The nose reveals notes of ripe cherries, blueberries and raspberries, followed by spicy notes and wood. Very pleasant on the palate, compact and juicy, with young but well-integrated tannins. The finish is fruity and persistent." Falstaff
"Camphor, forest berry and rosemary aromas shape the enticing nose on this fragrant red. Elegantly structured, the lithe palate offers sour cherry, orange zest and star anise alongside fine-grained tannins and bright acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2018 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is understated and floral, with lavender notes giving way to red plums and brown spice. It washes across the palate with ease, guided by juicy acidity. A burst of inner sweetness helps to balance its tart cherry-berry fruits. This finishes with admirable length and potent while maintaining incredible energy as hints of licorice and inner rose fade. The 2018 is already showing beautifully today but is full of medium-term cellaring potential." Vinous
"Savory orange, cinnamon, earthy-berry and new-leather character extends to a medium to full body with firm yet creamy tannins. Still supple, with some dark spices and cherries in the finish." James Suckling

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva DOCG 2016
Wonderfully fragrant, fruity-floral bouquet. The taste is reminiscent of plums and cherries with a fine vanilla-spicy component and clear, very pleasant acidity and polished tannins. Clear fruit aromas, enormous velvety and a long finish emphasise the harmony of this Nobile Riserva. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich shining brown-red with minimal cloudiness. First smell of rich ripe cherry fruit, then rosehip and also juniper berries, then delicate leather spice in the background. Lively palate entry, stretches out a wide dress, compact and medium-bodied on the palate, tightens up a bit on the back end and finishes with some pressure on sweet fruit." Falstaff
"A medium-bodied, structured red with aromas and flavors of cloves, cedar and dried cherries. Hint of pine. Well integrated tannins. The oak spices blend in nicely." James Suckling
"The 2016 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is dark with arching violet-tinged florals, hints of plum and Tuscan dust. Its textures are silky, communicating undeniable elegance, with a polished display of mineral-tinged wild berries contrasted by hints of sour citrus. What balance, tapering off lightly structured, with a purple and blue-toned array of residual fruits and inner herbal tones lingering on and on. This is classic but in need of some time to fully come together. The Riserva hails from Fattoria del Cerro’s higher-elevation vineyards that contain a high percentage of pebbles, fossils and shells." Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2019 (BIO)
Salcheto's garnet-red sparkling Vino Nobile delights us with fragrant dried plum and a hint of cinnamon and clove. On the palate, much present fruit, fine, sweet melting in the long finish. An authentic and pleasantly elegant organic wine from the heart of the Montepulciano region. SUPERIORE.DE
"A recognisable Vino Nobile with finesse! On the nose, lots of sour cherry and rum pot plums, combined with violet scents. Then there is even a lot of lilac, which resonates in the fragrance, and one immediately thinks of a chocolate dessert with cherries. On the palate, it is long and clearly drier and more elegant than the nose predicts. The tannins are well rounded. The 2 years between oak and glass have elegantly defined it. This Vino Nobile offers great drinking pleasure and otherwise it is a pleasure to discover such a sustained good winery." Vinum
"Rich ruby with a slightly brightening rim. Clearly marked nose with fine notes of fresh cherries, some violets, underpinned by cloves. Polished, finely meshed tannin characterises the course, showing juicy fruit, firm pressure in the final." Falstaff
"Dusty dried flowers, crushed rocks, lavender and red currants - all these are found when the 2019 Nobile di Montepulciano opens in the glass. The palate is flooded with a silky texture contrasted by tart wild berries and a salty sensation created by a pronounced minerality towards the end. The result is both savoury and sweet and full of savoury tension, while the 2019 finishes with a bitter cherry pit flavour." Vinous
"The 18 hectares of Vino Nobile that surround the Salcheto estate offer a picturesque view of the town of Montepulciano to the north. The self-sufficient estate is a model of true green initiatives, and the wines are among the top of the Denomination of Origin. The 2019 captures the warmth of the vintage, with sun-warmed raspberries and cherries, fragrant violets and yellow broom. It's fresh and juicy, full of concentrated, joyful fruit, while soft, suede-like tannins effortlessly lock everything in. Sounds deceptively simple, but is actually quite sophisticated." Decanter
"A fairly full-bodied Vino Nobile with dried strawberries, plums, hazelnuts and some blood orange on the nose. The fruit is juicy but the mouthfeel is round and smooth. The tannins are supportive and fine." James Suckling

Lemon peel, mint and the complexity of wildflower honey emerge. The pronounced acidity makes it long and elegant. In the aftertaste, hints of flint bring back mineral notes. An exciting wine with a distinct and fresh personality. Approx. 2,000 bottles were produced. SUPERIORE.DE

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
Broad and rich, with aromas and flavours of plums, blackberries, clay and spices. La Braccescas Nobile di Montepulciano is a finely tuned, beautiful wine with all the elements in the right place. Aromatically persistent, it is complex and nuanced in its balance. The winemaking team has done everything right here. SUPERIORE.DE
"In the far east of the Vino Nobile zone, the La Braccesca vineyard borders Umbria. The vineyards extend over 340 hectares and reach as far as the neighbouring municipality of Cortona. Expressive aromas combine subtle oak spice with lavender scent and orange against a background of dark red cherry. On the palate, it is round, rich and velvety and is carried by a juicy acidity. The sandy tannins give the wine its shape and show a powerful spiciness on the finish. Clean and well defined." Decanter
"Aromas of ripe mulberries and blackberries with dark spices, burnt orange peel and earth. Full and structured with a deep core of ripe dark fruit and tight-grained, chalky tannins. Lingering finish." James Suckling

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020 (BIO)
Salcheto's garnet-red sparkling Vino Nobile delights us with fragrant dried plum and a hint of cinnamon and clove. Lots of present fruit on the palate, fine, sweet melting in the long finish. An authentic and pleasantly elegant organic wine from the heart of the Montepulciano region. SUPERIORE.DE
"Refinement rather than strength, a refinement intended to refine the qualities of an excellent fruit. Floral on the nose, touches of peony, red blackberry and pepper leaf, with a nutmeg finish. The palate confirms the initial impression, iodine, crisp, persistent, with a fruity return." Luca Gardini

Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2020
A solid and every year excellent drop is the tension-charged Nobile by Poliziano, which smells of dark red cherries, blackberries and toasted notes. Juicy, compact and polished on the palate, soft and balanced with silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"A wonderful wine that seems dignified and serene on the one hand, but also has good tension on the other; everything seems playful, gentle and juicy; a fine wine right through to the finish." Weinwisser
"Ripe, bright red berries with fine spices and a hint of gravel minerality. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with fine herbs, citrus and berries, all wrapped in fine, crumbly tannins. Delicious already." James Suckling
"Immediately on the nose, nuances of marasca cherries, then laurel and cedar thyme. On the palate, iodine-salty tannins, juicy and persistent, great length." Luca Gardini

Similar to the more famous Montalcino, Montepulciano is also a picturesque, historic mountain town worth seeing. The historical core has remained almost unchanged since the 16th century. The Fortezza, the old fortified castle has been carefully renovated in recent years and equipped with presentation rooms for the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Here, too, the vineyards around this highest elevation lie at 200 to 600m above sea level.
The leading grape variety is also in Montepulciano of Sangiovese, but here it is called Prugnolo Gentile. Montepulciano lies on the eastern edge of Tuscany, near the once famous spa resort of Chiancano-Terme and borders Umbria.
Together with Brunello di Montalcino it became the DOC in 1966, and in 1980 again together the first DOCG in Italy. Unlike Brunello, the red wines from Montepulciano were popular centuries ago. Perhaps because two popes came from here and liked to drink the wine of their hometown best. But probably this is also one of the many anecdotes that Italians like to tell about wine. The fact is that Montepulciano wines have been drunk throughout Europe since the Middle Ages. Also at royal courts of popes and nobles. Therefore probably also the name originates "Vino Nobile" - the wine of "nobles".
The climate is warm, Mediterranean and windy, the grapes dry quickly when damp, so there are hardly any diseases. Therefore, there are also many wineries here that practice near-natural or organic cultivation. Above all Avignonesi, who have converted almost 200 hectares to organic cultivation. This is also the big chance to finally get out of the shadow of the more famous "brother" to kick. There is hardly any difference between the soil, climate and grape variety, but organic cultivation brings a fine herb spice into the play of aromas.
Vino Nobile is therefore increasingly gaining in character. And that is a fine difference compared to the sometimes already a little bit uniform colleagues from the neighboring mountain.
However, there is also a difference in the regulations. Prugnolo Gentile is 70% prescribed for both the Vino Nobile and the Rosso di Montepulciano. Although most producers have been using almost 100% Sangiovese for Vino Nobile for years, up to 30% of other grape varieties permitted in Tuscany are permitted. In the Rosso di Montepulciano you will often find 10-20% Merlot or Cabernet, but this is quite pleasant in the Rossi, which is coming on the market a little younger.
Vino Nobile must mature at least two years after harvesting and the Rosso can be launched early. Vino Nobile currently has around 1,200 hectares in DOCG status, which are cultivated by around 230 winegrowers. In Montepulciano, the Vin Santo is particularly worth mentioning, which is particularly cultivated here and is one of the best in the whole of Tuscany.
Some of the best known producers in Montepulciano are Avignonesi, La Braccesca (Antinori), Boscarelli, Poliziano, Salcheto and Tenuta di Gracciano della Seta. SUPERIORE.DE
