Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2024
La Morra, calcareous sandy soils, north-eastern slopes – this is where the 20 to 40-year-old Dolcetto vines for Elio Altareclassic grow. The Barolo revolutionary, who shook up the Langhe with Burgundian vinification methods in the 1970s, remains true to his Dolcetto: a wine for every day, as the farmers have been drinking it with pasta for generations. Maceration takes just two to three days in rotary fermenters at a controlled temperature, after which the grapes mature for ten months in stainless steel tanks – puristic, without the influence of wood.

Barbera d’Alba DOC 2024
While the Dolcetto is the uncomplicated everyday companion, the Barbera d'Alba from Elio Altare shows a different facet: fuller-bodied, warmer and with more structure. The 10 to 30-year-old vines are rooted in calcareous sandy soils in La Morra, mainly in eastern and north-eastern locations. The grapes macerate for three to four days in rotary fermenters at a controlled temperature, followed by a five-month maturation period in used French barriques – subtle enough not to overpower the fruit, present enough for complexity.

The seven founders – Altare, Giovanni Corino, Federico Grasso, the Revello brothers and Mauro Veglio from La Morra, Gianfranco Alessandria from Monforte d’Alba, and La Morandina from Castiglione Tinella – formed a pact: each would produce their own wine under the shared name L’Insieme, up to 5,000 bottles per year. Barolo DOCG 2022
Altare 's Barolo is a Barolo of the four cardinal directions. Not geographically, but in terms of character: from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and the municipality of Barolo comes a wine that does not let any single vineyard site take centre stage, but rather all of them at once. A map of the entire appellation in 10,000 bottles. What gives each vintage its unique character is the climate. 2022 was hot, dry and concentrated in the Langhe – a year that Parker ranked among the most extraordinary of the last decade. The vines were under stress; the grapes ripened early and fully; and the extraction from 4 to 5 days in rotary fermenters yielded denser fruit and softer tannins than in a cooler year. Twenty-four months in used French barriques gave the wine structure and complexity without overshadowing the warmth of the vintage.

It goes without saying, but this is "only" the Altare family's entry-level Barolo from four different vineyards, enhanced this year by the best grapes from Cerretta Vigna Bricco, which was not produced in 2020. Racy and supple, with terrificpurity and fine balance, the 2020 is downright galactic. Red berries, flowers, mint, liquorice and rose petals on the nose. A highly linear personality on the palate with flavours of sour cherry, aniseed, crushed rock and blue flowers. A captivating Barolo as it is written in the book and for us one of the greatest of the vintage! SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo DOCG 2021
When Elio Altare returned from Burgundy in the 1970s, he brought with him a conviction that nobody in Piedmont shared at the time: that Nebbiolo need not achieve greatness through age and ‘tannic mass’, but rather through elegance and precision. He shortened the maceration periods, introduced used barriques and pursued the ideal of a Barolo that is accessible without losing its soul. His dispute with his father over this has become legendary. That conviction has endured. Altareentry-level Barolo is the most complete expression of this conviction: no single cru, no selection from a single vineyard, but a blend from the appellation’s four major municipalities. La Morra brings aromatics and silkiness. Castiglione Falletto brings body. Serralunga d’Alba brings mineral rigour. The municipality of Barolo itself brings balance. 10,000 bottles from vines aged between 20 and 30 years, predominantly facing south to south-east.

The Nebbiolo Giàrborina comes from one of La Morra's historic Nebbiolo vineyards – calcareous-clay Barolo soils, sharing the same geological character as the estate's great crus, from which the Altare Barolos are produced. It bears the Langhe DOC label, free from the rules of the grand appellation, and showcases the grape variety in its more approachable, youthful form. 100% Nebbiolo, vinified in the same way as Larigi and La Villa: 3 to 4 days in rotary fermenters, followed by 18 months in 100% new French barriques.

In the 1970s, Elio Altare travelled to Burgundy and returned a changed man. He had seen what short macerations and small oak barrels could do for Pinot Noir: wines of elegance and approachability that challenged the long, tannin-rich traditions of his homeland. He brought the idea to the Langhe. And because his father was unwilling to part with the large old wooden casks, Altare is said to have sawn them up himself to make room for the barriques. His father subsequently disinherited him. But Elio carried on.

A radiant ruby-coloured eye-catcher – underneath is the Barolo Arborina 2020, one of the most important wines from the house of Elio Altare. The grapes come from the single vineyard Arborina, a south to south-east facing amphitheatre in the hills of La Morra, whose calcareous and clayey soil is marked by elemental minerality. The 2020 vintage certainly presented a challenge: Periods of heat and rapid ripening demanded the utmost attention when working in the vineyard. Nevertheless, a concentrated, elegant result was achieved. The grape harvest followed with ideal timing, guided by finesse and a feel for the critical moment. The wine was aged for around 24 months in 30% new and 70% used French barriques before being left to mature in the bottle.

Barolo “Cerretta Vigna Bricco” Riserva DOCG 2018
Barolo Cerretta Vigna Bricco Riserva 2018 comes from an exposed, high-altitude parcel in Serralunga d'Alba. The soils here are characterised by calcareous marl with iron- and manganese-rich inclusions, which give the wine an unmistakable, cool radiance and distinctive tannin structure. The south-east orientation ensures even sunshine, while cool night winds preserve the aromatic precision of the grapes. The 2018 vintage was characterised by a mild spring, followed by a warm but not extremely hot summer, which allowed the Nebbiolo to ripen gently and evenly. The harvest was not carried out until October, selectively and by hand, in order to bring in only perfectly ripe harvest. The wine was matured for 30 months in barriques, a small proportion of which were new, followed by several years of ageing in the bottle, as required by the Riserva status.

Serralunga d'Alba. Anyone who hears this name knows that this is where the masculine, powerful side of Barolo is born. Not the Burgundian elegance of La Morra, not the finesse of Barolo – but structure, tannin and longevity. The Cerretta vineyard is located on the south side of Serralunga, surrounded by legendary crus such as Lazzarito and Vigna Rionda. Sandstone, limestone, chalk – a terroir that gives Nebbiolo strength and depth. Elio Altare has been cultivating 20-year-old vines with a southern, south-eastern and south-western exposure here for decades. The "Vigna Bricco" – the highest point of the vineyard, where the sun shines the longest, where the grapes reach perfect ripeness.

Altare 's Barolo is a Barolo of the four cardinal directions. Not geographically, but in terms of character: from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and the municipality of Barolo, a wine emerges that does not let any single vineyard site take centre stage, but rather all of them at once.

A typical visit to the family business Elio Altare. Silvia, the older of the two daughters is already the boss. She has prepared everything and welcomes the guests. The tasting begins. In between Elio comes and shakes his hands. "I'm so glad to finally be able to step down, because I'm tired. I don't want to explain for the umpteen thousandth time why I make my wines different. It's all in books anyway, even in movies you can see it."
Somebody's asking a question. And as if someone had activated the light switch, Elio lights up and begins to tell passionately. Like when he took over the farm in 1976. Silvia leaves the room silently and comes back after a good three quarters of an hour. She's got good timing. She knows her father. Elio immediately notices that he is not a bit tired, but the tasting should go on, he says goodbye, not without smilingly explaining how proud he is of his daughters, and disappears to one of his new projects, a village in Alta Piemonte, which he renovates with friends. There will then be delicious cheese, organic fruit and vegetables - and perhaps a spumante from the almost extinct grape variety Liseiret, because saving his vineyard in Cinque Terre is as good as done. Old age tired looks different somehow.
Silvia continues the tasting and it quickly becomes clear that quality and style are unchanged, Barolo's big cinema in La Morra continues. Laughing, she makes it clear that since she can think, she has always helped, she has simply lived the perfection of her father and will continue to do so.
Elio Altare is one of the "Barolo Boys", a group of young winegrowers from the poorest backgrounds who, in the late 1960s and following decades, worked their way up, introduced modern cellar techniques, shorter fermentation times and ageing in French barriques and were therefore extremely successful. His goal has always been to make Barolo as elegant and long-lasting as the famous Burgundy wines from which he brought the ideas. That was clearly successful.
The small mixed farm Cascina Nuova of the grandfather in La Morra has become with hard work in the course of the decades the model enterprise of the modern Barolo winegrowers. In addition to the - in the truest sense of the word - local mountain, the top location Arborina, over the years some of the very best cru locations, such as Cannubi and Cerretta Vigna Bricco in the Barolo area, have been acquired by purchase or lease. So today there are 12 hectares of absolute top vineyards, which are cultivated by the family with respect by hand, all without the use of chemicals and pesticides. The cellar is fermented only with our own yeasts and as little sulphur as possible is used. In recent years, the range has been supplemented by the "Uno per Uno", a top barolo from the Arborina cru vineyard, where the family desteps the grapes by hand and selects only the very best grapes.
In addition to the Barolo specialities, which have always received the highest awards worldwide, the Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo are also long-running favourites in the top ranks of international ratings. The Barbera Larigi or the Nebbiolo-Barbera-Cuvée La Villa as well as the Nebbiolo Giarborina have as much success as the Barolo grenades. It is worth mentioning that Elio Altare and some of his winemaking colleagues have been sharing their success with the poor for many years because they have never forgotten how they themselves once felt. Thus the proceeds from the wine series "L'Insieme", which could be translated as "We Together", benefit charity projects. SUPERIORE.DE
