    • "L'Insieme" VdT 2016

      “L’Insieme” VdT 2016

"L'Insieme" is a small but concrete project of oeno-solidarity. Only seven winegrowers from the Langhe region have come together to support concrete solidarity projects every year with part of the proceeds. Members include Elio Altare, Gianfranco Alessandria, Giuliano Corino, Federico Grasso, Giulio e Paolo Morando, Lorenzo Revello and Mauro Veglio. Under the label of the same name (L'Insieme: together, together, together), wine producers support solidarity projects around the world with 5 euros per bottle. To date, almost 500,000 euros have been donated in this way and a total of 42 major projects have been supported.

The deep dark L'Insieme combines the typical Langa grapes (Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto) with the racy spice of Cabernet. A wine with a firm, strong structure, harmoniously rounded tannins, delicate melting and a nice finish. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "La Villa" Rosso Langhe DOC 2012

“La Villa” Rosso Langhe DOC 2012

La Villa is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes with a wide bouquet of sour cherries and violets, in the taste of which all the components are precisely measured. Good fruit, polished tannin, fine acidity and a spicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"A blend of 60% Barbera and 40% Nebbiolo, the 2012 Langhe La Villa sees 18 months in new oak for extra richness and a beautifully plush style. Soft and luscious tones open the bouquet and the wine transitions seamlessly from dark fruit to savory spice. The tannins are round, ripe and well managed." Robert Parker

"The 2012 La Villa, a blend of 60% Larigi Barbera and 40% Arborina Nebbiolo, is superb. Wonderfully alive and nuanced, the 2012 races across the palate with beautifully layered fruit and fabulous overall balance. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and new leather notes meld together in the glass. As is typically the case, the Barbera gives richness and mid-palate, while the Nebbiolo is mostly felt in the wine's aromatics and structure." Antonio Galloni

      “Giàrborina” Rosso Langhe DOC 2015

Langhe Giàrborina (formerly Arborina) smells silky and nuanced, in the glass red cherries, blackberries and meadow flowers. A magnificent Nebbiolo, perfectly balanced, captivatingly elegant and with a promising future. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Langhe Giàrborina reveals a soft and velvety disposition that is enhanced by layers of fruit, spice and smoke. There is a note of candied cherry or dried blackberry that serves to remind you that this was a warm growing season. The wine is executed in an up-front or accessible style that makes it perfect for grilled meats or succulent meatloaf." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Langhe Giarborina, Altare's 100% Nebbiolo, exudes energy, tension and class. At this early stage, it is quite primary, which is not surprising for a young Giarborina. Readers will have to give the 2015 at least a few years in bottle to allow it to flesh out." Antonio Galloni

La Villa a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes with a wide bouquet of sour cherries and violets, in whose taste all components are precisely measured. Good fruit, polished tannin, fine acidity and a spicy finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Langhe La Villa is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera. This plump, rich and ripe vintage is another good choice for a cheesy pasta dish with its 15% alcohol and solid acidity. The Barbera is what gives the wine its fleshy succulence and freshness, and the Nebbiolo adds the structure and the elegance. The finished product is opulent and dense." Robert Parker

"Opulent and oaky, broad and concentrated, offering vanilla, spice and chocolate notes. Balanced and vibrant, with a long, fruit-, spice- and tar-filled aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 La Villa is a blend of 60% Nebbiolo and 40% Barbera, both from Arborina. In this vintage, the weight and texture of Barbera dominate, at least in the early going. Creamy and expansive on the palate, the 2016 La Villa has a lot to offer once it fully comes together. Silky and beautifully perfumed, the 2016 is already quite expressive. It will be interesting to see if time brings a bit more harmony, although the 2016 certainly seems to have a good bit of potential." Vinous

"The 2015 La Villa, Altare's Barbera/Nebbiolo blend, needs time to fully come together. The interplay of Barbera fruit with Nebbiolo aromatics and structure once again proves to be alluring. Sweet floral notes lead into cedar, anise and bright, red-toned fruits. Silky and energetic on the palate, the 2015 exudes freshness. "Seeing a short maceration time and only a brief aging period in barrique, the 2016 Langhe Giàrborina offers a rich, plummy and soft approach. The wine is ready to drink right out of the gate with a veal lasagna and bechamel sauce." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Langhe Giarborina is another breathtaking wine from Altare. Soaring aromatics and finely knit fruit are the signatures of an exceptional vintage in which the Altare family captured all the potential of the year. A regal, aristocratic wine, the 2016 has it all. Polished tannins add to the wine's considerable appeal. Above all else, the 2016 Giarborina is a wine of exceptional balance. • Barolo DOCG 2015

      Barolo DOCG 2015

Dark, concentrated ruby. In the nose plums, mocha, smoke, menthol, spices and some new leather. Clear in the drink, muscular and broad-shouldered. Despite its fullness, it is always precise and clear, the tannins are smooth. The personality of this Barolo from the top locations La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba inspires us until the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous ruby. Finely spiced raspberry nose. Elegant, juicy palate and fragrant finish with wonderful tannins. Precise and finely built." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barolo is an absolutely glorious wine. Sensual, silky and polished, the 2015 has so much to offer. Bright red berry fruit is nicely complemented by an array of floral and spiced notes that add nuance. Polished tannins add to the wine's considerable near-term appeal, but the straight Barolo also has a track record here of aging exceptionally well. Vineyard sites include Pernanno, Sarmassa, Rochettevino and Cerretta. Don't miss it." Vinous

"Elio Altare gives me a bit of his winemaker's wisdom: "Wine is like a marriage—it needs to be consummated early." With that in mind, the 2015 Barolo is engineered for near- and medium-term drinking with lots of plump fruit that jumps right out. The wine is open and inviting. Dark fruit is followed by warm tones of tilled earth and cured tobacco. Grapes are harvested from different parcels in four vineyard passes. In 2015, the team had the time to wait for each parcel to mature properly because the harvest was relaxed and spread over more comfortable timing." Robert Parker

    • Barolo DOCG 2016

      Barolo DOCG 2016

Classically composed, perfect entry into the Altare Nebbiolo from own vineyards in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d'Alba. The Elio Altare winery has always been one of the producers with its modern imprint (use of barrique), whose Barolo seems less hard and brittle when young and rarely begs for more than 10 years of further bottle ripening.

Deep, dark fruit with a delicacy and complexity that only on the long finish brings the wonderfully fine-grained tannin and power to the palate that we love so much in wines. This immensely well-structured red from an excellent vintage is already a great pleasure early on and therefore does not necessarily become more accessible as it matures, but gains in size, complexity, elegance and finesse. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, intense ruby with a fine garnet sheen. Intense and inviting nose, full of ripe fruit, blackberries and dark cherries, fresh plums in the background. Round and juicy on the attack and course, spreads out richly with fine-meshed tannin over the course, deep, long finish." Falstaff

"Bright and floral, with lovely aromatic top notes that give the wine energy, the 2016 Barolo is a terrific introduction to the Altare Barolos. Lavender, rose petal, mint, spice and new leather are some of the many notes that grace this silky, mid-weight Barolo." Vinous

"This is a classic interpretation of Nebbiolo that offers beautiful intensity and balance. The bouquet is pure, elegant and direct with highly distinguishable aromas of wild cherry, tobacco, earth and licorice root. It sees two years in used barrique, and this time in wood contributes to the volume and depth of the palate. The wine is almost ready to drink out of the gate, or comfortably within the next 10-year window." Robert Parker

      Barolo “Arborina” DOCG 2016

Deep dark ruby. The bouquet a colorful bouquet of black cherry, elderberry, graphite and a strong cassis note. On the powerful palate, the black fruits again, plus a wonderful balance and freshness with a picture-book tannin that further rounds off the perfect impression. The top vineyard of Elio Altare impresses every year, in 2016 a climatic course is added, which gives the wine an unprecedented structure and multidimensionality. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant ruby with a fine garnet rim. Intense and compact nose, rich notes of plums and pickled cherries, green pepper in the background. Lots of rich pressure on the palate, dense tannin in many layers, grippy and long." Falstaff

"The Elio Altare 2016 Barolo Arborina sources its fruit from the family vineyard that surrounds and extends downhill from the higher perch where the Altare winery and home is located in La Morra. The wine exudes darkness and rich concentration with blackberry aromas that are followed by spice, tar and campfire ash. It ages in barrique for two years, and only 20% of that oak is new. These results are open-knit and accessible, revealing velvety texture and black fruit flavors." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Barolo Arborina is one of the most perfumed, gracious wines I have ever tasted from Altare. More than that, the tannins that can be a bit aggressive in young Arborina are wonderfully silky, supple and nuanced. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, spice, wild flowers, mint and white pepper all give the Arborina brilliant top notes. Medium in body and impossibly refined, the 2016 is a stunner, but it is a less obvious wine than it has tended to be in the past." Vinous

"This red tends to the darker side of the fruit spectrum, offering black cherry, black currant and violet flavors, shaded by tar, earth and iron. The solid structure is well-integrated, extending on the expansive finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Barolo Arborina is soft, pretty and sensual. The warmth of the vintage has softened the typically hard young Arborina tannins, which in turn gives the wine more near-term approachability than is often the case. Floral, cedar and tobacco notes add an attractive upper register to this very pretty and nuanced Barolo from Altare." Vinous

    • Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2011

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2011

Great Barolo Cannubi of garnet red colour and with a distinct scent of wild berries. The elegant fruity taste shows typical strong tannins and a great acidity. Great class with excellent storage potential - made by Altare. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with a garnet shimmer. Fragrant and finely drawn nose with notes of ripe cherries, raspberries and a hint of cinchona bark and rose petals. Dense, rich tannin, develops a lot of power in the course, pithy, rich notes of raspberry, needs additional maturity." Falstaff

"The 2011 Barolo Cannubi represents the inaugural vintage of this new classic. Elio Altare lost his lease on the Brunate cru, but gained a 2,500-square-meter section of Cannubi (and Cannubi Valletta) in its place with 20-year-old vines. Elio says that the two vineyards are actually very similar with comparable exposures and sandy soil types. To my palate, however, this wine tasted riper and more evolved than the Brunate. It reveals bold berry notes of strawberry, prune and flinty mineral nuances. The vintage heat is more evident in this Cannubi expression. The wine also shows soft lines and a yielding texture." Robert Parker

"A regal, aristocratic Barolo, Altare's 2011 Cannubi is just as fabulous today as it has been on the previous occasions I have tasted it. Ripe, silky tannins caress the palate as this lifted, precise Barolo shows off its multi-dimensional, exquisitely beautiful personality. Elio Altare won't divulge the exact location of the parcel he is sourcing fruit from. Much like a great spot for white truffles, this dirt clearly produces fruit of the highest level. The 2011 Cannubi is nearly impossible to resist today, but it will be even better once some of the baby fat drops off. This is one of the wines of the vintage." Antonio Galloni

"Bright and delicate, despite the brooding tannins. Strawberry, cherry, rose and black pepper flavors mingle as this unfolds into a long, spicy aftertaste." Wine Spectator

"Fabulous perfumes of flowers, berries, strawberries, and sandalwood. Full body, ultra-fine tannins, and a long finish that lasts for minutes. A fabulous Cannubi. All about class." James Suckling

    • Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2012

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2012

Barolo Cannubi from Piedmont's Dream Year 2012 is of garnet red colour and with a distinctive scent of wild berries. The elegant fruity taste shows typical strong tannins and a great acidity. Great class with excellent storage potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Cannubi is shaping up to be magnificent. Next to the other 2012s, all of which play across a single dimension, the Cannubi stands out because of its creamy, multidimensional personality. Suave, silky tannins reinforce that impression. Like all of the 2012s here, the Cannubi is not a big wine, but it shows remarkable finesse. The Cannubi also has a bit more tannic bite on the finish, which is probably a combination of the manual punchdowns used here and traces of green tannin from the hail damage. Knock out aromatics, fine tannins and veins of supporting, saline-infused minerality all leave a lasting impression. The 2012 saw four days on the skins, a bit less than the other Barolos. More importantly, it is a testament to what a quality-obsessed grower can achieve in a year with plenty of challenges." Antonio Galloni

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2013

Barolo Cannubi is garnet red in colour with a scent of wild berries. The elegant fruity taste shows typical strong tannins and a great acidity. Great class with excellent storage potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, medium-density garnet red. The nose is compact and attractive, with aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry and blackberry, and a hint of truffle at the back. Juicy and salty on the palate, charming, ripe raspberry note, opens with hearty, present tannin, sweet enamel that lasts long." Falstaff

"2013 Barolo Cannubi shows special intensity and verve that served as a hallmark for this classic vintage. The good news at the Altare winery is that the woman who leases out this parcel of Cannubi has renewed the contract, after heated negotiations, for six more years. That means that we can count on seeing this wine until 2024. This wine is absolutely distinguished by its fine and polished nature, but it feels firm and structured, even a bit fatter than expected, once it hits the palate. The effect is complete and generous. Wait a few moments and the wine takes a turn toward very floral and perfumed aromas." Robert Parker

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Plenty of sweet marasca cherry on the nose as well as the palate. A touch smoky too. Succulent fruit that closes up on the finish. Lovely, chewy tannins on the finish, but still a little austere and in need of further age." Jancis Robinson

"One of the firmer wines in this lineup. In 2013, the Cannubi is distinguished for its focus, tension and overall energy. Bright red stone fruit, blood orange, mint and sweet tobacco are all nicely pushed forward. Beams of focused, nervous tannins give the wine its shape and overall persistence. The lifted aromatics and translucent fruit are pure Cannubi. Even so, the 2013 needs time to come into its own. Today, it is decidedly nervous." Antonio Galloni

    • Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2014

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2014

Barolo Cannubi is garnet red in colour with a scent of wild berries. The elegant fruity taste shows typical strong tannins and a great acidity. Great class with excellent storage potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining ruby with a garnet shimmer. Very intense, seductive nose, full of ripe, dark cherries, forest raspberries, some rhubarb, very clear. Fine-meshed, dense tannin in many layers, very clear and straightforward, flows calmly along, after violets and raspberries, salty." Falstaff

"Of the new 2014 Barolo releases from Elio and Silvia Altare, I am most impressed by the 2014 Barolo Cannubi. This wine dances or flutters over the palate with fine-tuned aromas of wild rose, white cherry, autumnal leaf and campfire ash. The mouthfeel is stitched together with silken threads. Because so much fruit was lost due to difficult weather conditions and hail in 2014, only 1,200 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

"The 2014 Barolo Cannubi is sensual, polished and nuanced, but very much in the midweight style of the year. Fresh and vibrant, it has enough depth to drink well for another 20 years. The pedigree of Cannubi comes through in the wine's creamy, enveloping texture. Next to the other Barolos in the range, the Cannubi is defined by its silky tannins and beautifully layered feel – the qualities that make the best wines from this site so coveted." Antonio Galloni

    • Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2015

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2015

Also the 2015 edition of the shows the typical Cannubi attributes finesse, precision and an unmistakable opulence. Tight and generous on the palate, then with floral and fine fruity notes. The tannin is fine and the finish is long and elegant, as one would expect from a great Nebbiolo from the Altare family. SUPERIORE.DE

"Just mid ruby. Fairly deep ruby. Great precision and depth on the nose. The fruit fills out the palate without being oppressive or heavy. Firm, super-polished, fine tannins rolled out like a carpet for the intense fruit." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is a gorgeous wine with a real glossy shine and bright quality that transcends the wine's appearance, bouquet and mouthfeel. There is so much volume here, and the wine covers the entire palate evenly and smoothly. In an increasing order of intensity among Altare's Barolos, this was the second to last wine we tasted." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another stellar wine in this range. One of the more closed wines in the lineup, the Cannubi is going to need the better part of a decade to start coming into its own. Today, it is dense, powerful and full of energy, and yet there is a purity to the fruit that represents the purest essence of what Cannubi is all about. There is certainly a lot to look forward to here." Vinous

    • Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2016

      Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2016

Just 1,500 bottles of this exceptional Barolo from the leased Cannubi vineyard (Comune di Barolo) reach the market every year. Precise bouquet of dark fruits, in addition some smoke and liquorice, notes of cassis. At the palate first certain extract sweetness, then a wonderfully balanced play of acid and tannin which shows a great storage and maturity ability. The Barolo Cannubi with its interpretation of the Nebbiolo grape, which is probably the purest at Altare, has been the ambitious project of daughter Silvia since 2011 and represents an exciting rounding off of the already almost unique collection. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening ruby garnet. Very clear and inviting nose, smells of ripe raspberries and plums, some rose petals, in the background discreetly of cloves. Round and balanced on the palate, plump ripe fruit, then takes off with bunched, dense tannin, fills the palate richly, final with fireworks of spice." Falstaff

"There's a pure core of cherry and strawberry in this red, graced by notes of licorice, spice and tar. Balanced and harmonious, with lively acidity driving the long aftertaste. The tannins are suave and mesh well already at this young stage." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is a powerful, structured wine that is going to need time to come into its own. Cannubi Barolos are often seductive when young, but Altare's 2016 has quite a bit of tannin that needs time to soften. Even so, all the elements are wonderfully balanced. Cherrys, sweet tobacco, menthol, licorice and dried flowers infuse the 2016 with striking layers of nuance." Vinous

"Fruit for this wine comes from a leased vineyard site in Cannubi (in the comune of Barolo), and the first year of production was 2011. This is a passion project very much spearheaded by Elio's rambunctious and curly-haired daughter Silvia Altare. The 2016 Barolo Cannubi represents a beautiful departure in the family portfolio. Within this collection of new releases, the Cannubi best articulates the purity of the Nebbiolo grape. Like the other Baroli, it is aged in oak for two years (with 20% new barrique). There is greater varietal purity here with etched and linear fruit tones followed by ethereal smoke, tar and white licorice. I love the mouthfeel too, with that sudden point of cherry sweetness that is followed by elegant texture and acidity. This is a gorgeous release of just 1,500 bottles." Robert Parker

    • Barolo "UnoPerUno" DOCG 2011

      Barolo “UnoPerUno” DOCG 2011

Fabulously elegant Barolo in bright ruby garnet from the Arborina single vineyard and "uno per uno", i.e. berry for berry, manually selected! The bouquet of flowers, wild berries and herbs unsurpassed in its harmony. Equally balanced on the palate, with deep fruit and silky tannins. The now second vintage UnoPerUno is a superlative! SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Very clear and fragrant in the nose, fine to pomegranate, raspberry, lots of cherry, also some saffron, resting in itself. On the palate dense and compact, but also shows a nice drinking flow, at first beautiful cherry and raspberry, then unfolds with firm, finely meshed tannin, builds a long arch, in the finish firm pressure, almost infinitely long." Falstaff

"The 2011 Barolo Unoperuno is an excruciating labor of love. Uno per uno means "one for one" in Italian and that's how each grape is removed from its cluster. With such a labor-intensive regime, only five barriques of this wine are produced. This manual destemming means that the wine does not show any of the bitter astringency you can get with stem inclusion or even mechanical destemming. The tannins come from the seeds. The Arborina vineyard is the source of fruit and this is the second year that Barolo Unoperuno is produced. It shows a lighter garnet color and pure aromas of wild berry, dried blueberries and cassis. This ensemble is finely textured and elegant. The tannins are silky and lightweight. It takes ten days and ten people to execute the destemming process." Robert Parker

"The 2011 Barolo Unoperuno is an experimental Barolo made from hand-destemmed Arborina fruit. Sweet, perfumed and lifted in the glass, the 2011 is intensely aromatic and silky. Succulent red cherries, spices and wild flowers all grace the palate in a silky Barolo that speaks to finesse. Nebbiolo is very hard to fully destem as the jacks are naturally fragile, the Unoperuno was made from hand destemmed fruit, a painstaking and time-consuming labor of love I have never seen in Piedmont. The two Arborina Barolos are markedly different in 2011, which is deeply thought provoking, to say the least." Antonio Galloni

"The purity in this wine is superb with plum, cedar and sandalwood. Silky tannins to the limit! Full, round and sexy. Totally handmade. Selected grape by grape. This is from the Arborina vineyard. To understand what nebbiolo is, taste this." James Suckling

That's all Barolo can do! SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, luminous ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Cool and memorable nose, with notes of raspberry and blackberry, ripe cherry and notes of tea and tobacco. Round and smooth in the attack and course, ripe, clear fruit, much blackberry, dark cherries, fine enamel, opens with wonderfully fine-meshed tannin, juicy and long." Falstaff

"The result of extreme hand de-stemming, the 2013 Barolo Unoperuno is assembled berry-by-berry. Fruit comes from the estate's celebrated Arborina vineyard. This wine was not produced in 2014 (because yields were so low). Starting in 2015, it will also include fruit blended in from Cannubi, Cerretta and other sites. This edition shows a wonderful sense of precision and focus with subtle mineral intensity at the back of dried fruit, tobacco, moist earth and toasted hazelnut. Only 1,500 bottles are made. The labor required to make this wine is intense. It takes a full week to complete the hand de-stemming process in which each berry is picked off individually ("uno per uno"). The must undergoes a ten-day maceration period. To innovator Elio Altare, this is his interpretation of a "traditional" Barolo." Robert Parker

"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Backward nose with a singed edge, but with plenty of depth. Backward palate too, with fragrant cherry and a certain cool sleekness too it. Richly tannic on the finish and plenty of sweet, embryonic, succulent fruit." Jancis Robinson

      Barolo “UnoPerUno” DOCG 2015

The grapes of UnoPerUno come from the Cru vineyard Arborina and they are individually destemmed. As a result of this intensive manual work, only 1,500 bottles of this extraordinary wine are sold in well-assorted specialist shops, and that only from the best vintages. Due to the manual destemming, no green overtones of the stems get into the mash, thus the tannins become silkier and creamier than with the conventional method. You can taste the result: UnoperUno is of high fruit intensity, has incredible depth and structure and is a benchmark of the appellation every year in its purity and clarity on the nose and palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Just mid ruby. A little more perfumed and concentrated than the Arborina 2015 from this producer, and with minerally hints. Fantastic, concentrated and yet lithe palate with loads of tasty, tactile tannins. Almost mouth-watering energetic finish." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barolo Unoperuno represents a departure from prior years in that the wine is now a blend from various sites as opposed to being sourced solely from Arborina, as it was in its first vintages. Silky and yet also generous on the palate, with super-polished tannins, the 2015 simply has it all. Blood orange, star anise and cinnamon add attractive aromatic top notes to this ethereal, exotic Barolo. The 2015 is a blend from Cannubi, Cerretta, Sarmassa Arborina and Pernanno." Vinous

"This wine is the result of a meticulous destemming process in which the grapes are removed one by one, or "uno per uno," from the stems. In the past, this wine saw fruit sourced from only the Arborina vineyard in La Morra, but starting with this release, the 2015 Barolo Unoperuno represents a blend of fruit, although the specific vineyard parcels are not defined. Elio Altare calls it a "Barolo with a cru base." This is a beautiful wine, and the tannins are well integrated. It shows the pureness of the variety, a very silky and bright expression that is fresh and streamlined. It would be well accompanied by a delicate porcini risotto." Robert Parker

"A beam of pure cherry is matched by aromas and flavors of late summer fields, woodsy underbrush, licorice and tar. This is supple in texture and nicely supported by refined tannins and lively acidity." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Barolo Unoperuno explodes from the glass with striking aromatic intensity, inner perfume and brilliant fruit. The 2016 is a blend of co-fermented fruit from Arborina, Cerretta, Cannubi and Liste, bringing together elements of traditional and modern schools in a gorgeous Barolo that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning!" Vinous

"The Elio Altare 2016 Barolo Unoperuno is a special wine with a high price tag that is explained by the manual labor required for its creation. "Uno per uno" means "one at a time" in Italian, and the fruit, the actual individual berries, are selected by hand during a super precise sorting operation. It represents a blend of Arborina in La Morra, Cannubi in Barolo, Pernanno in Castiglione Falletto, Sarmassa in Barolo and Cerretta in Serralunga d'Alba. This is a grounded and powerful wine. It reveals cherry cough drop, blackberry preserves and candied orange peel. There is smoke and spice acquired during two years of oak aging. A precious few 1,200 bottles were produced, berry by berry." Robert Parker

Barolo “UnoPerUno” DOCG 2013 · MAGNUM in OWC

Fabulously elegant Barolo in bright ruby garnet from the Arborina single vineyard and "uno per uno", i.e. berry for berry, manually selected! The bouquet of flowers, wild berries and herbs unsurpassed in its harmony. Equally balanced on the palate, with deep fruit and silky tannins.

    About the winemakersElio AltarePiedmont
    Elio Altare

A typical visit to the family business Elio Altare. Silvia, the older of the two daughters is already the boss. She has prepared everything and welcomes the guests. The tasting begins. In between Elio comes and shakes his hands. "I'm so glad to finally be able to step down, because I'm tired. I don't want to explain for the umpteen thousandth time why I make my wines different. It's all in books anyway, even in movies you can see it."

Somebody's asking a question. And as if someone had activated the light switch, Elio lights up and begins to tell passionately. Like when he took over the farm in 1976. Silvia leaves the room silently and comes back after a good three quarters of an hour. She's got good timing. She knows her father. Elio immediately notices that he is not a bit tired, but the tasting should go on, he says goodbye, not without smilingly explaining how proud he is of his daughters, and disappears to one of his new projects, a village in Alta Piemonte, which he renovates with friends. There will then be delicious cheese, organic fruit and vegetables - and perhaps a spumante from the almost extinct grape variety Liseiret, because saving his vineyard in Cinque Terre is as good as done. Old age tired looks different somehow.

Silvia continues the tasting and it quickly becomes clear that quality and style are unchanged, Barolo's big cinema in La Morra continues. Laughing, she makes it clear that since she can think, she has always helped, she has simply lived the perfection of her father and will continue to do so.

Elio Altare is one of the "Barolo Boys", a group of young winegrowers from the poorest backgrounds who, in the late 1960s and following decades, worked their way up, introduced modern cellar techniques, shorter fermentation times and ageing in French barriques and were therefore extremely successful. His goal has always been to make Barolo as elegant and long-lasting as the famous Burgundy wines from which he brought the ideas. That was clearly successful.

The small mixed farm Cascina Nuova of the grandfather in La Morra has become with hard work in the course of the decades the model enterprise of the modern Barolo winegrowers. In addition to the - in the truest sense of the word - local mountain, the top location Arborina, over the years some of the very best cru locations, such as Cannubi and Cerretta Vigna Bricco in the Barolo area, have been acquired by purchase or lease. So today there are 12 hectares of absolute top vineyards, which are cultivated by the family with respect by hand, all without the use of chemicals and pesticides. The cellar is fermented only with our own yeasts and as little sulphur as possible is used. In recent years, the range has been supplemented by the "Uno per Uno", a top barolo from the Arborina cru vineyard, where the family desteps the grapes by hand and selects only the very best grapes.

In addition to the Barolo specialities, which have always received the highest awards worldwide, the Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo are also long-running favourites in the top ranks of international ratings. The Barbera Larigi or the Nebbiolo-Barbera-Cuvée La Villa as well as the Nebbiolo Giarborina have as much success as the Barolo grenades. It is worth mentioning that Elio Altare and some of his winemaking colleagues have been sharing their success with the poor for many years because they have never forgotten how they themselves once felt. Thus the proceeds from the wine series "L'Insieme", which could be translated as "We Together", benefit charity projects. SUPERIORE.DE
