"The 2017 Barbera d'Alba is a thick and darkly saturated expression that has the acidity and the inner power to cut through the fats in those foods. Pio Cesare does a great job across its line of wines, but it shows a particularly deft hand with their lower-end wines like this food-friendly Barbera d'Alba." Robert Parker

    • Vermouth di Torino <br>in Gift Box

Vermouth di Torino · in Gift Box

From the very beginning, Pio Cesare produced limited quantities of Barolo Chinato and Vermouth, exactly according to a family recipe handed down from his grandfather. At the beginning of the 1950s, however, production was discontinued as tastes and preferences changed.

In recent years, Piedmont lovers have become increasingly longing for traditional character, strong personality and great individuality in aromatic wines and wine-based aperitifs. As a result, the decision was taken to produce small quantities of Barolo Chinato and Vermouth again - again strictly according to a secret family recipe that was kept under lock and key for many years under the careful supervision of the grandmother, granddaughter of the founder.

In addition to the absinthe, which is essential for the production of a good wormwood, it is refined with a mixture of 26 aromatic herbs such as marjoram leaves, gentian roots, orange zest and others, which are dosed together strictly according to the traditional family recipe. Added are various white wines of the winery added including the Moscato d'Asti. After a 15-day maceration, the wormwood obtained matures in oak barrels for at least 4 months. Finally, the recipe is rounded off with the addition of caramelised sugar, which gives this wormwood its light colour and unmistakable aroma and flavour.

Connoisseurs enjoy it in the old "Piedmontese style": without ice, but only with a small slice of lemon zest. SUPERIORE.DE

"The NV Vermouth di Torino is based on Chardonnay but is infused and aromatized with cloves, cinnamon, quinine, citrus peel, ginger, nutmeg, marjoram and other secret ingredients that were written down on a piece of paper in 1952 and kept under lock and key ever since. The folks at Pio Cesare did well to bring this traditional recipe for Vermouth back into circulation. This is an ideal aperitivo drink that can be served on ice with a slice of lemon. It opens to a bright orange-gold color and offers a complicated bouquet that recalls the many aromatic ingredients used in the infusion. The fishing is sweet, but not excessively so." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco DOCG 2014

In the nose and on the palate, bright red cherries, plums and spices blend with a potpourri of orange peels, tobacco and leather. The 2014 vintage surprises us with its great balance. Tight tannins support the very Nebbiolo typical overall impression - very successful! SUPERIORE.DE

"Pio Cesare's 2014 Barbaresco is bright, articulate and very attractive. Hints of citrus, wild flowers and white pepper add aromatic lift to this nuanced, mid-weight Barbaresco. The 2014 is a bit lithe in feel, but it has enough persistence to drink well for another decade or so." Antonio Galloni

"Strains of sweet vanilla shine through the cherry, menthol and iron flavors in this austere, tensile red. Needs time for the fruit to assert itself, yet the aftertaste finds equilibrium." Wine Spectator

"Lots of rose petals and dried fruit with hints of sliced oranges on the nose. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Linear and pretty." James Suckling

    • Barolo DOCG 2014

      Barolo DOCG 2014

Pios Barolo from 2014 offers many things that make this wine incomparable. Since the vegetation period was somewhat cooler than in previous years, it offers more freshness and clarity. The tannins are firmly integrated, yet the finish is round and smooth. This Barolo offers characteristic aromas of wild berries, black truffles and cola. It is vinified in a very traditional style in Botte Grande and a small part of Barrique to give the wine a little more oxygen during the integration and ageing process. Nebbiolo in purezza! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby garnet with bright rim. Memorable nose with notes of tea, rose petals, liquorice, plums and raspberry. It has a rich substance and is close to the palate, with a lot of present fruit and raspberry, opening with dense tannins, a fine melt in the core, a long aftertaste, a wine with handshake quality". Falstaff

"The 2014 Barolo shows crisp lines and sharp delineation. At its core, this cool-vintage Nebbiolo offers dark and enriched fruit that is layered between spice, grilled herb, cola and balsam herb. These various components find very good balance and unity, yet ultimately this remains a slightly thinner and more accessible vintage overall." Robert Parker

Bright and complex with licorice, tar and rose petals. Hints of plums, too. Medium to full body and chewy, round tannins. Plenty of dried meat, spices and berries. A pretty finish. Shows intensity for the vintage. Already very pretty but drink in 2020." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    Pio Cesare
    Piedmont
    Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare was one of the first winemakers to believe in the high quality and potential of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and other Piedmontese wines. The world-famous traditional house he founded under his own name in the 19th century still has its headquarters in the old town of Alba today. The walls of the cellars date back to the Roman Empire. Today, the fifth generation of the family owns the wine house managed by Pio Cesares, Pio Boffa, the great-grandson of Pio Cesares. The quality products of the Langhe-based company can be found in restaurants and hotels all over the world, are highly appreciated by wine connoisseurs and collectors and are therefore worthy ambassadors of their north-western Italian cultivation zone. The range includes Barolo and Barbaresco site wines as well as other important red and white wines from Lower Piedmont.

In addition to working in its own vineyards in the Barolo area in Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Barolo and Novello, in the Barbaresco areas of Treiso and other selected production areas in Diano d'Alba, Sinio and Trezzo Tinella, Pio Cesare has long-standing business relationships with local farmers. Friends of the winegrowers have been selling part of their grape harvest to the family for many generations. In the vineyards of Pio Cesare, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto thrive alongside other vines, most of which are native to the area.

In the winery, which has been extended by a new fermentation and maturation cellar and a new bottling plant, strictly selected grapes are turned into balanced wines with a classic character and a very high ageing potential. One of the top wines is Barolo Ornato, which comes from a vineyard of the same name in Serralunga d'Alba was born. Also the Barbera, pressed in the old town of Alba, inspires wine lovers from year to year. Only the finest wines of the house are aged in new barriques. The ruby red Barolo and Barbaresco have fine oak notes at a young age. Concessions to a broad public taste are sought in vain by connoisseurs of fine wines in Pio Cesare's battery of sixteen wines - and this will certainly remain so. SUPERIORE.DE

"Respect for the terroir and the microclimate are the basis of a philosophy that aims to reproduce the same wine style today as then, albeit with the most modern cellar technology."Gambero Rosso
