    • "Piodilei" Chardonnay Langhe DOC 2018

      “Piodilei” Chardonnay Langhe DOC 2018

Piodilei has been the winery's white flagship since 1985. The grapes come from the single vineyard Il Bricco, which also produces the grapes for the award-winning Barbaresco Crus. Pio's goal from the beginning has been to create a wine with this white that has the same complexity and almost the same storage potential as the great red wines of this region. Sparkling straw yellow. Complex bouquet of herbal spice, delicate butterscotch notes, flint, pear and sweet yellow fruit. Impressive freshness in the glass with a finely integrated oak spice and notes of pineapple and chestnut. A fresh, complex and serious white that has no equal in the region. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Langhe Chardonnay Piodilei supports an elaborate structure and broad shoulders. This wine underlines the creaminess in Chardonnay, it is broad and rich, with a layered bouquet that opens to peach, exotic fruit and lemon mousse. That abundant fruit is framed and brought into focus by the wine's pretty mineral contouring." Robert Parker

    • Vermouth di Torino <br>in Gift Box

Vermouth di Torino · in Gift Box

From the very beginning, Pio Cesare produced limited quantities of Barolo Chinato and Vermouth, strictly following a family recipe handed down from his grandfather. At the beginning of the 1950s, however, production was discontinued as tastes and preferences changed.

In recent years, it has been noticed that Piedmont lovers are increasingly longing for traditional character, strong personality and great individuality in aromatic wines and wine-based aperitifs. As a result, the decision was taken to produce small quantities of Barolo Chinato and Vermouth again, again strictly according to a secret family recipe, kept under lock and key for many years under the careful supervision of the grandmother, granddaughter of the founder.

In addition to absinthe, which is essential for the production of a good wormwood, it is refined with a mixture of 26 aromatic herbs such as marjoram leaves, gentian roots, orange zest and others, which are dosed together strictly according to the family recipe that has been handed down. Various white wines from the winery are added, including Moscato d'Asti. After 15 days of maceration, the wormwood obtained is aged in oak barrels for at least 4 months. Finally, the recipe is rounded off with the addition of caramelized sugar, which gives this vermouth its bright colour and unmistakable aroma and taste.

Connoisseurs enjoy it in the old "Piedmontese style": no ice, just a small slice of lemon peel. SUPERIORE.DE

"Thanks to its funky retro packaging, this is one of the most exciting projects to come out of downtown Alba in a very long time. The Pio Cesare NV Vermouth di Torino sees a base of Chardonnay enhanced with Moscato. (Like the estate's other fortified wine, the Barolo Chinato, only 1,000 bottles are released per year.) The Vermouth pours forth from the bottle with an orange or copper color. It is thick and viscous, taking its time as it swirls around the bowl of my glass. The bouquet reveals mountain herb and medicinal tones, with lots of mint and spearmint. There is some blood orange, citrus, licorice, camphor ash, vanilla and spice. This Vermouth is all fun and charm." Robert Parker

Yes, these are the standard Nebbiolo traits, and this classic wine strives to deliver nothing more and nothing less than varietal purity. Fleshy, fruity and dense on the palate, beautiful raspberry and blackberry tones, well-built tannin with a creamy core, very long and engaging. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, rich garnet red. Appealing and inviting nose, first some leather and tobacco, then after cranberries, ripe cherries and blackberries, playful and multilayered. Sturdy and firm on the palate, opens with plenty of tightly woven tannin, very powerful, pressure and rich bite on the back end, laid out for a long life." Falstaff

"Widely sourced, from family-owned vineyards in Novello and Grinzane Cavour as well as more celebrated villages, this Barolo shows admirable opulence on the nose, with sweet cherry fruit but no trace of jamminess. Firm and spicy, it displays excellent vigour and presence and good acidity gives persistence and refinement. Long." Decanter

"The 2016 Barolo is a terrific example of the year. Bright acids and veins of supporting tannins give the 2016 its super-classic feel. Sweet red cherry fruit, chalk, mint, dried flowers, cedar, anise and sweet pipe tobacco all grace this translucent, mid-weight Barolo. Best of all, the 2016 can be enjoyed with just a few more years in bottle. It is a gorgeous wine and a good relative value within Barolo." Vinous

"Pretty sweetness and ripeness to this with cherries, dried strawberries and chocolate. It’s full-bodied with round, firm tannins. Very long and intense. A little tight now. Complex and subtle at this stage. Give it two or three years to come around." James Suckling

"Traditionalists happily fall back to this wine from Pio Cesare. This historic winery, now in its fifth generation and located within the city limits of Alba, takes care to shape a classic interpretation without too many extra bells or whistles. The fact that Pio Cesare now has the flashier Barolo Ornato and the newly created Barolo Mosconi, only gives more importance to this wine. The Pio Cesare 2016 Barolo offers deep, dark fruit with a mingling of spice, smoke, tar and smoke. This wine represents a blend of fruit from five comuni, or villages: Cascina Ornato, La Serra and Briccolina in Serralunga d'Alba; Gustava and Garretti in Grinzane Cavour; Roncaglie in La Morra; Ravera in Novello; and starting with the 2015 vintage, Mosconi in Monforte d’Alba." Robert Parker

"Enticingly fragrant, this wine offers alluring scents of iris, rose, perfumed berry and wild herb. It's full bodied and elegant, delivering crushed raspberry, juicy Marasca cherry, star anise and orange zest set against a backbone of taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced and lends intensity." Wine Enthusiast

Barolo Chinato · in Gift Box

An infusion of chinchona (China Calissaja and Succirubra bark) is macerated for 21 days in a small quantity of classic Barolo. Then a mixture of aromatic herbs such as gentian root, rhubarb, cardamom seeds, sweet and bitter orange, cinnamon and other spices are added, which together make up the special family recipe. After a few weeks of ageing, a certain amount of classic Barolo is added. SUPERIORE.DE

"Only 1,000 bottles per year are released of the Pio Cesare NV Barolo Chinato, a fortified digestif that pours from the bottle with a dark garnet color and faint hints of copper and amber. This bottle takes you on a terrific journey into a favorite local tradition. Made with a base of Barolo wine, the nose offers layers of dried cherry and fruit, but perhaps the biggest aromatic influence here are those dusty mineral notes that subtract from the natural sweetness of the wine. That 16% alcohol content also serves to align your palate away from the fruit. Instead, you get medical herb, dried ginger and camphor ash." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco "Il Bricco" DOCG 2012

      Barbaresco “Il Bricco” DOCG 2012

Very impressive is the Barbaresco Il Bricco. A lush, firm fruit and the imposing tannin are embedded in a serious, elegant structure with a penetrating minerality and a perfectly integrated wood note. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Pio Cesare 2012 Barbaresco Il Bricco emerges from the best blocks of the house's estate vineyard in Treiso. A powerful, dense wine, the Bricco is endowed with real depth and the greater textural richness that comes from a bit riper fruit. A host of dark red cherry, plum, mint and licorice notes take center stage as this bold, racy Barbaresco shows off its alluring personality. The Bricco sees a bit more time in small French oak barrels than the straight Barbaresco, and that comes through in both the wine's flavor profile and textural feel." Antonio Galloni

"Spicy, warm and dense, with a firm structure lending austerity. Cherry, strawberry, tobacco and earth notes join the spice as this stays tight and vibrant on the finish." Wine Spectator

"The purity to this wine on the nose is fantastic with rose petals, blackberries and blueberries. Very subtle. Tight and linear thanks to super tannin quality and a long, long finish. It goes on for minutes. What enchanting length and persistence here." James Suckling

    • Barbaresco "Il Bricco" DOCG 2014

      Barbaresco “Il Bricco” DOCG 2014

Barbaresco Il Bricco presents itself with more depth than the "normal" Barbaresco. In the bouquet dark red stone fruit, menthol, spices, leather and some cedar wood. On the palate, already at a young age, it is powerful and with a lot of muscle power, which, together with the harmoniously balanced tannin and acid structure, gives a glimpse of a great, long life with a hopeful development. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby with a light garnet edge. The nose initially shows subtle smoky notes, then full-bodied plums, blackberries and forest raspberries. On the palate it is firm and full-bodied, unfolds with present, dense tannin, finely coated with sweet enamel, firm, very juicy, firm pressure in the finish". Falstaff

"A beefy version, with rich, dense tannins, evoking flavors of cherry, wild herbs, menthol and tobacco. A hefty dose of oak adds sweet spice details and tannins. Needs time to absorb the oak. Best from 2022 through 2038." Wine Spectator

"Extremely perfumed aromas with dried flowers, light stems, fresh herbs and dried strawberries. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a linear and bright finish. So delicious now." James Suckling

    • Barbaresco "Il Bricco" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Il Bricco” DOCG 2015

Barbaresco Bricco 2015 shines with a strong sparkling ruby red and a fine garnet sheen. Concentrated nose with notes of rose petals, raspberries and mulberries. It unfolds powerfully on the palate, plays out its fine-meshed tannin superiorly and flows elegantly into a never-ending finish with aromas of ripe, red berries and sweet melt. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby garnet. Intense nose, opens with notes of truffle and liquorice, then ripe plum, some forest raspberry, very clear. Dense and supple in the base and course, full-bodied on the palate, hearty tannin gives the backbone, plus a fine sweet enamel, full pressure in the final". Falstaff

"The Bricco vineyard in Treiso is known for producing solid, ageworthy wines. Combined with Pio Cesare's use of stainless steel for vinification and then botti and barrique for maturation, the result is an elegant, fresh yet structured wine with hidden power. The broad palate has a chocolate edge to it, with oak astringency and plummy hedgerow fruit in tow. The fine, delicate tannins give grip but there's a lovely juicy character just waiting to break out. If you need to drink this right away it deserves decanting." Decanter

"Rich and spicy, featuring cherry, plum and tar flavors, accented by vanilla and toasty oak notes. Firm and compact, yet balanced, this will need time for all the components to harmonize and find equilibrium." Wine Spectator

"From the Bricco di Treiso MGA, the 2015 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a rich and nicely layered red wine that shows the warm characteristics of the vintage with dark berry fruit, cherry and light touches of exotic spice. I paired this wine with lightly aged salami that worked beautifully, thanks to the oily nature of the food and the fresh nature of the wine." Robert Parker

"This shows phenomenal structure to it with fantastic linear tannins that take this wine deep and long on the palate. It’s buttressed by a beautiful balance of ripe fruit characterized by strawberry and orange-peel undertones. Chewy and focused. Needs four or five years to soften and show its true greatness." Barolo “Ornato” DOCG 2015

Exotic, beguiling and constantly changing in the glass, Ornato 2015 impresses the palate with convincing nuances and energy. Red stone fruits, crushed gravel, orange zest, spices and white pepper create an exotic Barolo full of charm and high recognition value. The 2015 will cover all the themes Serralunga is all about - a fantastic performance by Pio Boffa and the entire Pio Cesare team. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening garnet red. Opened with a pronounced earthy note of truffle and liquorice, followed by saffron and plums. Hearty and gripping on the palate, opens with firm tannin in many layers, stretches a wide arch, lay aside for a few more years!" Falstaff

"Maturing ruby with watery bricky rim. Fine, sweetly perfumed nose with earthy, minerally notes. Spicy cherry fruit on the palate with polished tannins and ripe acidity. Tannins build up on the finish but are backed-up by elegant fruit. Fantastic chew and length of fruit." Jancis Robinson

"Piercing scents of cherry, currant, eucalyptus and licorice signal this tightly wound red. Fluid, with a supple texture that dissolves into a matrix of dense tannins. The ample sweet fruit lingers nicely." Wine Spectator

"With powerful fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2015 Barolo Ornato is a plush and dense red wine with a contemporary feel that prizes richness and overall accessibility. There is a level of softness here that permeates the entire wine and adds to the already-intense aromas of red fruit, blackberry, spice, tar, asphalt and candied orange peel. This structured Barolo is best tasted with a platter of Alpine cheeses and jellied honey." Robert Parker

"The fruit for this wine is sourced from Pio Cesare's plots in the Ornato vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. It has a big, bold palate impression with lovely fresh acidity framing a core of delicate red fruits and heavier plummy notes. The tannins are fine and chalky, and despite this vineyard's reputation for producing heavily structured wines, it's relatively light on its feet, juicy and moreish. Although delicious, it seems a waste to drink it so early in its life - I would leave it for at least another couple of years for all the elements to fully integrate and then decant after opening. Vinified in stainless steel before spending 18 months in barriques and a further 12 months in botti." Decanter

"The aromas are so complex yet subtle wtih wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dried flowers as well. Full body, chewy tannins that are ultra-fine and powerful, yet there is a finesse and beauty to them as I said from barrel. Classic, great nebbiolo." James Suckling

      Barbaresco “Il Bricco” DOCG 2016

Strong sparkling ruby red and fine garnet shine. Concentrated nose with notes of rose petals, raspberries and mulberries. Develops powerfully at the palate, plays out superiorly its fine-meshed tannin and flows polished and elegantly with flavours of ripe, red berry fruits and sweet melting into a never-ending finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, intense garnet red. Opens with appealing, spicy notes, after coriander seeds, then shows notes of sour cherry, blackberry and rose petals. Starts off a bit tentative on the attack, well-crafted fruit, lots of cherry, builds powerfully from mid-palate onward, powerful and deep, tannin in many layers, coupled with sweet melting on the final." Falstaff

"Only the most prized three plots from this lofty site are used for this cru, which is why production is no more than around 6,600 bottles. There's invigorating purity of fruit on the nose, with its poised raspberry and rose fragrance, and just a hint of sweet oak in the background. The attack is precise, showing good acidity that still needs time to integrate. This is a wine of elegance rather than power, and although there's still a slight grittiness to the tannins, they will soon resolve into a Barbaresco of charm and lift. Long, peppery, but polished finish." Decanter

"The 2016 Barbaresco Il Bricco, from Pio Cesare’s vineyard in Treiso, is gorgeous. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and star anise all flesh out in the glass, with an extra kick of warmth (not heat) that gives the wine a real sense of breadth. Best of all, the 2016 will drink well with minimal cellaring, although it certainly has the substance to age well for some time to come." Vinous

"The Pio Cesare 2016 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a beautifully lightweight and lithe expression, with an enormously silky and subtle mouthfeel. Barbaresco is always a bit more open and accessible compared to Barolo, but this particular release of 7,000 bottles has benefited from an extra year in the bottle and has gained even more definition and traction in terms of mouthfeel as result. This wine speaks in long, slow and well-enunciated tones. Indeed, it whispers into your heart." Robert Parker

"Intense aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, iron and tar are underlined by a steely structure in this linear, complex red. Balanced in its youthful way, with vibrant acidity driving a long fruit, earth and mineral aftertaste. Shows terrific potential." Wine Spectator

"A soft, fruity red with strawberry and smoke undertones, as well as spices. Full-bodied. Chewy, round and racy at the end. Very structured and linear. Give it time to open. Better after 2022 and onwards." James Suckling

      Barolo “Ornato” DOCG 2017

Red stone fruits, crushed gravel, orange zest, spices and white pepper create an almost exotic Barolo full of charm and with high recognition value. On the palate, punchy and very energetic. Ornato 2017 plays on all the themes that Serralunga is about - a fantastic achievement by the entire Pio Cesare team. SUPERIORE.DE

"The very first single-vineyard Barolo produced by the family, first made in 1985, this is vinified in stainless steel tanks with moderate temperature control. It then undergoes maceration for 30 days and ageing in botti for about 30 months, with a small portion of the wine in French oak barriques for the first 12 months. Dark ruby in colour, it has aromas of raspberry, rose, violet, cherry, slatey minerality and graphite. The attack is subtle, the tannins polished, with an extracted mid-palate. Assertive acidity and an austere finish are balanced by fragrant cherry fruit and a liquorice aftertaste." Decanter

"Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible." James Suckling

    • Barolo "Mosconi" DOCG 2015

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2015

Four years ago, Pio Boffa bought himself a "little" present for his 60th birthday. Not a new set of golf clubs, a picture hanging in the hall, a holiday for him and the family. No. Only one vineyard called Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba, a region of Piedmont where four generations of the Pio Cesare dynasty could never gain a foothold. Originally the grapes of the 10 ha vineyard were supposed to increase the quality of its classic Barolo, but after the first barrel tastings Pio Boffa was unmistakably clear that this would be at least an equal - albeit stylistically different - counterpart to the hitherto undisputed flagship Ornato.

And he was so right. Mosconi 2015 is a real jewel and will be an exciting challenge for Ornato in the years to come. And yet he is not, because Mosconi is different. It is more light-footed, in the nose the red rather than the black fruits dominate, in addition an irresistible liquorice and a juiciness, which will grant it immediately a top place in the entire appellation. On the palate it is of a precision that is unparalleled, less powerful than the ornato, but more elegant and subtle. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening garnet red. Complex and inviting nose, of truffles, lots of plums, some goji berries and leather. Dense and substantial on the palate, shows beautiful ripe fruit, unfolds with fine-meshed tannin in many layers, rich pressure." Falstaff

"Maturing mid ruby with bricky tinges. Embracing and rich on the nose with a spicy edge. The tannins keep clinging to the palate while the fruit is still backward. Supple finish with lots of ripe, grainy tannins." Jancis Robinson

"The company bought this fine Monforte vineyard in 2014, and this is their first vintage, which is mostly aged in barriques, The nose is perfumed, with rose aromas and great charm and finesse. The palate is svelte but has great concentration and a firm tannic backbone. Indeed, it's rather grippy now but not tough. There's power but the alcohol is in check, lending an imposing character and a very long finish." Decanter

"This is the first red from this producer from the Mosconi vineyard and it’s a triumph. Classic Mosconi character, showing the sun and richness of the zone. Aromas of white truffles, tobacco, dried leaves and wet earth. Then it goes fresh and bright. Full body, velvety tannins and a long and gorgeous finish." James Suckling

    • Barolo "Mosconi" DOCG 2016

      Barolo “Mosconi” DOCG 2016

Four years ago, Pio Boffa bought himself a "small" gift for his 60th birthday. Not a new set of golf clubs, a picture hanging in the hall, a vacation for him and the family. No. Just a vineyard called Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba, a region of Piedmont where four generations of the Pio Cesare dynasty never gained a foothold. Originally, the grapes from the 10-hectare vineyard were intended to enhance the quality of his classic Barolo, but after the first barrel tastings, it was unmistakably clear to Pio Boffa that this would be at least an equal - if stylistically different - counterpart to the hitherto undisputed flagship Ornato.

Mosconi is lighter on its feet than Ornato, with red rather than black fruits dominating the nose, along with irresistible licorice and a juiciness that will immediately earn it a top spot in the entire appellation. On the palate, it has an unparalleled precision, less punchy than Ornato, but more elegant and subtle. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dense, sparkling ruby garnet. Very appealing and intense nose, lush with rose petals, fresh plums, but also some prunes, exceedingly exciting. Spreads out richly on the palate, lots of gritty, grippy tannin wrapped in sweet enamel, lots of blackberry, plus earthy components, supple and long." Falstaff

"Mid ruby with bricky tinges. Cool spice nose with cherry fruit hints. A little lighter than the 2015 Mosconi. Same suppleness but more fruit-driven and supported by grainy chewy tannins. You could almost approach this now, but the tannic structure as well as the youthful fruit deserves much more time (and this is not bottled yet). Great depth as well as long tannins." Jancis Robinson

"Pio Cesare acquired an extensive parcel within Mosconi in 2014, but only the oldest vines are used for the cru wine. The nose is packed with fruit, powerful and intense, with explosive cherry and strawberry aromas, and a light savoury tone. Rich and broad, this is a wine with swagger and spice, and despite its heft it's finely tuned and polished. Elegant and persistent, it shows integrated tannins and a savoury tone. Very long." Decanter

"Woodland-berry, pine-forest and rose aromas mingle with whiffs of dark spice and menthol. On the full-bodied palate, firm fine-grained tannins accompany juicy Marasca cherry, cranberry and licorice while fresh acidity keeps well balanced." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Barolo Mosconi shows all of the breadth and amplitude that is typical of wines from this Monforte site. Tar, licorice, rose petal, mint, incense and dried herbs all develop with time in the glass. The 2016 is a powerhouse. I would give it at least a few years in bottle." Vinous

"This is the second vintage released of this new wine from Pio Cesare, and what an elegant treat it is. The 2016 Barolo Mosconi, with fruit from Monforte d'Alba, is a toned and slender wine that shows the inner power and muscle of this corner of the appellation. The bouquet is defined by a pretty mineral note that is backed by wild berry fruit, rose petal and a dusting of crushed stone or tilled earth. I feel the tight tannins of this wine, but I also taste the elegance of the fruit that surrounds them. Only 5,000 bottles were produced. Mosconi is the second single-vineyard Barolo made by this estate after the Ornato was introduced 30 years ago." Robert Parker

"Really attractive blue fruit and flowers with hints of minerals. Full-bodied, very tight and sexy with super fine tannins, at the same time. A structured and racy young wine. Better after 2021." James Suckling

    About the winemakersPio CesarePiedmont
    Pio Cesare

Pio Cesare was one of the first winemakers to believe in the high quality and potential of Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and other wines of Piedmont. The world-famous traditional house he founded under his own name back in the 19th century still has its headquarters in the old town of Alba. The walls of the cellars date back to Roman imperial times. Today, the traditional winery is in its sixth generation of family ownership. Since the death of Pio Boffa in spring 2021, the legacy of more than 40 years of enthusiastic work has passed to Pio's daughter, Federica Boffa. Together with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto and her uncle Augusto Boffa, she now leads the fortunes of the winery. The triumvirate is completed by oenologist Paolo Fenocchio.

The quality products of the Langhe-based company can be found in restaurants and hotels all over the world, are highly appreciated by wine connoisseurs and collectors and are therefore worthy ambassadors of their north-western Italian cultivation zone. The range includes Barolo and Barbaresco site wines as well as other important red and white wines from Lower Piedmont.

In addition to working in its own vineyards in the Barolo area in Serralunga d'Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Barolo and Novello, in the Barbaresco areas of Treiso and other selected production areas in Diano d'Alba, Sinio and Trezzo Tinella, Pio Cesare has long-standing business relationships with local farmers. Friends of the winegrowers have been selling part of their grape harvest to the family for many generations. In the vineyards of Pio Cesare, Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto thrive alongside other vines, most of which are native to the area.

In the winery, which has been extended by a new fermentation and maturation cellar and a new bottling plant, strictly selected grapes are turned into balanced wines with a classic character and a very high ageing potential. One of the top wines is Barolo Ornato, which comes from a vineyard of the same name in Serralunga d'Alba was born. Also the Barbera, pressed in the old town of Alba, inspires wine lovers from year to year. Only the finest wines of the house are aged in new barriques. The ruby red Barolo and Barbaresco have fine oak notes at a young age. Concessions to a broad public taste are sought in vain by connoisseurs of fine wines in Pio Cesare's battery of sixteen wines - and this will certainly remain so. SUPERIORE.DE

"Respect for the terroir and the microclimate are the basis of a philosophy that aims to reproduce the same wine style today as then, albeit with the most modern cellar technology."Gambero Rosso
