In the heart of Alba, nestled within the Roman city walls of ancient Alba Pompeia, lies a cantina that has been making history since 1881. Pio Cesare – founded by Cesare Pio, a man who believed in the potential of Nebbiolo at a time when others were still focussing on quantity. Five generations later, Federica Boffa is carrying on the legacy of her father Pio Boffa, who sadly passed away far too soon in 2021. Together with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto, she is responsible for one of the last producing wineries in the historic centre of Alba – a place where time seems to flow more slowly, where large oak barrels allow the wines to mature as they have done for over 140 years.
Their Langhe Nebbiolo combines grapes from Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards: Diano d'Alba, La Morra, Collaretto, Lirano in Serralunga d'Alba, Rocche di Massalupo in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio. Parcels that would be too noble for simple Langhe wines – but that is precisely what makes this Nebbiolo so special. Here, the nobility of the great denominations flows into a glass that remains accessible without denying its origins. After manual harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks with 20 days of maceration. Ageing lasts 24 months: predominantly in French and Slavonian oak barrels, with a small proportion in barriques for a limited period.
Bright ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections. Intense aromas of ripe blueberries, sour cherries and wild strawberries accompanied by floral notes of roses and ivy, later spicy accents of liquorice and pepper. Full-bodied on the palate with a firm but delicate tannin structure and a Burgundian flow. Freshness and finesse are the top priority. A wine for every day, yet suitable for special moments. Perfect after decanting with Mediterranean starters, pasta al ragù, grilled and roasted meat. SUPERIORE.DE
"A fresh and floral wine with aromas of strawberries, red cherries, licorice and a hint of smoke. Sweet fruit on the palate, crisp and tight, with a medium to full body and a balanced finish." James Suckling
