![Aglianico del Molise DOC 2020 (BIO)]()
Aglianico del Molise DOC 2020 (BIO)
A red wine with a southern heart and depth: this Aglianico del Molise comes from organically cultivated vineyards at classic altitudes. It is aged for 18 months in large wooden barrels, which gives it structure and maturity without masking the fruit. Dense ruby colour with a violet core. Blackcurrant, blackberry, liquorice, some smoke and Mediterranean herbs on the nose. Powerful yet balanced on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and a mineral finish. A characterful, honestly vinified Aglianico that impressively expresses the originality of the Molise region and its excellent value in the bottle. SUPERIORE.DE

!["Terre Cerase" Rosato Campania IGT 2024]()
“Terre Cerase” Rosato Campania IGT 2024
A rosé that draws its strength from Aglianico – elegant, juicy and resolute in style. Terre Cerase shows its freshness in a bright salmon pink colour with a silky sheen. The bouquet already reveals aromas of ripe wild berries, sour cherry and floral nuances, underpinned by a subtle peppery spiciness. On the palate, the wine impresses with its round structure, pleasant volume and precise acidity. The fruit remains persistently present, while the dry finish leads into a delicate minerality. Despite its substantial texture, the Rosato is surprisingly light-footed and easy to drink. Ideal as an aperitif, with seafood, buffalo mozzarella or pizza – a rosato with its own personality, which is the result of uncompromising loyalty to the grape variety: an intense Aglianico in a charming guise. !["Contado" Aglianico Riserva Molise DOC 2019]()
“Contado” Aglianico Riserva Molise DOC 2019
A wine that tells in every facet where it comes from – that is Contado Riserva. Made from 100% Aglianico from organically farmed slopes of the Ramitello vineyard in Molise (Contrada Camarda), it shows the potential of this robust grape variety and the special region. The soil is calcareous with clay and sand, giving the wine mineral depth and vigour. The late harvest is followed by a long maceration period, after which the wine matures for a total of around three years: partly in barriques and tonneaux, partly in stainless steel tanks, and finally with extended bottle ageing. This careful ageing philosophy gives the wine complexity, elegance and a fine power of integration in every vintage.

“Rubrato” Aglianico Campania DOC 2022
Rubrato is the youthful expression of Aglianico – powerful but not overloaded, typical and yet accessible. The grapes come from the higher parcels of Irpinia with volcanic soils. Maturation in stainless steel tanks preserves freshness and varietal purity. Rich ruby red colour in the glass. The aroma opens with ripe cherries, dark wild berries, some violets and a hint of graphite. The wine is lively on the palate, with juicy fruit, fine acidity and moderate tannins – clearly structured, but with plenty of drinkability. Rubrato has elegance and balance in every vintage, it is a stylish introduction to the world of Aglianico that goes perfectly with pasta with sugo, grilled meat or mature cheese. SUPERIORE.DE

Dark and initially a little brooding, Sceg shimmers from the glass with a rich and earthy blend of plum sauce, brown spices and crushed autumn leaves. The wine is silky smooth and balanced by vibrant acidity, while a contrasting wave of black fruit with citrus flavours washes over the senses. Smoky nuances and hints of ash resonate. Nevertheless, it finishes remarkably fresh, leaving a subtle hint of mineral tannins that remind the Basilicata connoisseur that this is a young Aglianico in its purest form. The grapes for Sceg come from several small plots with old vines in Barile. SUPERIORE.DE

This red classic comes from marl- and clay-rich soils from the high and steep hills near Taurasi, not far from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The soils are rich in minerals and salts and give the Aglianico grape a wonderful depth and minerality.

"Barolo of the south" with ancient roots
Drinking Aglianico means drinking history. The deep, dark-coloured grape variety is one of the oldest indigenous varieties in Italy and is native to the hot south of the peninsula – especially in Campania and Basilicata. Linguistically, its roots are thought to be in ancient Greek: Hellenico became Aglianico over the centuries. In fact, Greek settlers probably brought the vine to the Campania region in the 6th century BC, where it became the centrepiece of the local wine identity over the millennia.
In ancient times, the wine made from it – especially Falernum – was considered one of the finest in the Roman Empire. Today, Aglianico is valued by connoisseurs as a powerful, long-lasting red wine with great aromatic depth and impressive structure. It is not for nothing that many sommeliers speak of the "Barolo of the south" – even though Aglianico is of course not a Nebbiolo, but has its own aristocratic characteristics.
Dark, complex and amazingly storable
Aglianico is one of the latest ripening grape varieties in Europe and is often not harvested until November. This is unusual even for southern Italy and ensures a deep tannin structure, but also a cool, balanced flavour profile. A diva in the vineyard – but one with a grand final: Aglianico produces tannin-rich, colourful wines that are characterised by their powerful structure, high acidity and longevity. Often closed and angular when young, complex notes of black cherry, blackberry, tar, leather, dark chocolate, but also tobacco, roasted coffee and spices unfold with maturity. The texture always remains grippy, sometimes demanding – never pleasing, but always fascinating. In the hands of good winemakers, Aglianico becomes a terroir-emphasised style icon: mineral, brooding and surprisingly fresh for a wine from such sun-drenched regions.
Origin and altitude: Volcano meets vine
The most important growing areas are Taurasi DOCG in Campania and Aglianico del Vulture DOCG in Basilicata. Here, the vines grow at altitudes of up to 600 metres – partly on volcanic soils, which give the wine its typical smokiness and minerality. Aglianico is also occasionally found in Apulia, Molise and northern Calabria, but plays a subordinate role there. The top wineries include Feudi di San Gregorio, Quintodecimo and Mastroberardino from Campania as well as Elena Fucci and Cantine del Notaio in Basilicata. They all show how differentiated and refined Aglianico can be interpreted – from muscular classics to delicately characterised terroir wines. By the way: Synonyms for Aglianico are rare, but locally you sometimes hear names such as Ellenico, Falanghina Rossa (not to be confused with the white Falanghina), Uva Nera or Aglianichella.
Not only perfect for southern cuisine
Aglianico calls for culinary counterparts with character. Dishes with roasted flavours, dark meat, game, lamb, mature cheese or ragù alla Napoletana are ideal. It is also a delight with porcini mushroom risotto, oxtail or smoked dishes. Depending on the style, the wine should have a drinking temperature of around 18 to 20 °C – younger, fruitier varieties preferably a little cooler. A tip for connoisseurs: patience will be rewarded. Good Aglianico wines mature with dignity for 10-20 years – and develop an aromatic depth that surprises even experienced wine drinkers. SUPERIORE.DE
