• "Ros'Aura" Rosato Campania IGT 2019

      “Ros’Aura” Rosato Campania IGT 2019

Scented of ripe wild strawberries and cherries. Open, fresh and wonderfully polished in taste with the characteristic aromas of wild berries and a wonderfully fruity finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Here I’m finding a beautifully perfumed display of Aglianico fruit, as the 2019 Feudi di San Gregorio Ros'Aura wafts up from the glass with a mix of dusty rose, ripe green melon, and sweet smoke. On the palate, it’s wonderfully soft, but also teeming with energetic acids and salty minerals, which add a savory umami touch, while its cooling ripe fruits lean toward the red spectrum and soothe the senses. The finish is medium in length and spicy, with hints of raspberry and tart cherries." Vinous

      Aglianico Campania IGT 2019

Fascinating bouquet of fruits and a lively mixture of minerals, smoke and tobacco. Structured, well-dosed tannins and a fresh juiciness on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark soil, savory herbs, and hints of animal musk lift from the 2019 Donnachiara Campania Aglianico, as violet florals and earthy mineral tones amass in the glass. On the palate, soft textures are offset by refreshing acidity, as pure black fruits are further complemented by citrus-tinged spices and savory herbs. The finish is medium in length with hints of youthful tannin tugging at the senses, yet this remains wonderfully fresh, resonating on purple-tinged inner florals." Vinous

    • "Rubrato" Aglianico Campania IGT 2017

      “Rubrato” Aglianico Campania IGT 2017

Rubrato, with its clear ruby red colour, reveals the characteristic Aglianico aromas of dark fruit and wild berries. Well balanced on the palate, with a delicate structure and an aftertaste that reveals fresh fruity and delicately aromatic notes. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby. Inky nuances complement dark cherry, plum and mineral aromas and flavors. This is a long, refined and very pretty wine. 100% Aglianico, made from 12-year-old vines grown mostly in the heart of the Taurasi production zone at about 400 meters above sea level; does not age in oak (spends 12 months in stainless steel). This is a wildly better Rubrato than past vintages: more serious, more concentrated and deeper, the result of the work done over the years by Antonio Capaldo and Pierpaolo Sirch." Vinous

"Glazed dark cherries, fresh orange peel and preserved lemons. Very tight and citrusy for this grape on the palate, which is medium in body and flavor and quite firm and expressive." James Suckling

Concentrated ruby red with garnet reflections. To the predominant cherry and berry scent the wood contributes very light hints of roasted coffee. Full and very intense taste of dark berries, very light of violets and plums, the compact tannins are carried by balsamic notes, in the aftertaste fine liquorice tones. SUPERIORE.DE

"Of the many value reds offered by this estate, the 2015 Aglianico del Molise Riserva Contado is my favorite. “Lacrimarosa” Rosato Irpinia DOC 2019

Delicate rosé, aromatic vinous scent with notes of roses, violets and undergrowth. Fresh on the palate with fine acidity, soft and a slightly salty note. A wine which does not hide its volcanic origin and which is a pleasure to drink. SUPERIORE.DE

"If you’ve never experienced an Aglianico Rosato, then pull up a chair. The 2019 Lacrimarosa from Mastroberardino displays both sweet and savory tones on the bouquet, as ripe strawberry and roses give way to savory herbs, Indian spice, and white smoke. Soft textures envelope the palate in ripe fruits, showing more melon now than red fruit, but with a penetrating zing of vibrant acids which motivate the experience and expose the senses to salty minerals. On the finish, we return to the strawberry spectrum, along with alluring inner florals that seem to go on and on and on." Vinous

    Things to know about
    Aglianico

Aglianico, also known as "Barolo of the South", is one of the oldest grape varieties in Italy. Therefore it is logical that a lot of legends and stories entwine around this variety. The Phoenicians are said to have brought it with them hundreds of years before the birth of Christ. The Greeks then also, because the name is derived from "ellenico" (Hellenic, Greek). This, in turn, only triggers a smile in linguists. And vine researchers in Greece found no surviving grape variety with similarities.

It is therefore very likely that Aglianico is one of the oldest autochthonous grape varieties in Italy. So one also hears stories that the grape variety could actually be the legendary, ancient "Falerner", which Pliny had already praised. However, this is no longer verifiable. So if an Italian tells you one of these stories, listen to him, he'll believe it rock solid. Drink a glass with him, because many of these "Aglianiche" (so the plural is formed) are actually very good. Dark and dense with aromas reminiscent of plums, blackcurrants and sour cherries, often a bit of dark chocolate. Rich in tannins and with lively acidity - hence the comparison with Barolo - they can often show a high ageing potential.

Aglianico has a long vegetation period and is often harvested late in October. It thrives particularly well on volcanic soils, such as in the Basilicata around Matera and Potenza, in Campania near Avellino and Benevento, in Apulia, Calabria, Molise and Sardinia. It is also occasionally found in the Maremma. Well-known DOC or DOCG wines with Aglianico as the leading vine variety are Aglianico del Taburno, Aglianico del Vulture, Castel del Monte, Cilento, Costa d'Amalfi, Taurasi, Terre di Cosenza or Vesuvio. In total there are only about 10,000 hectares in Italy.  SUPERIORE.DE
