    • "Merus" Pinot Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2020

“Merus” Pinot Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2020

Bright light yellow. Floral, finely fruity notes of apple and tropical fruits. This wine presents itself youthfully fresh and at the same time elegant with pleasant, fresh acidity and fine minerality. Harmonious finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Pretty aromas of hawthorn and mature white stone fruit shape the nose. On the poised palate, bright acidity accomapanies ripe yellow pear, nectarine and a hazelnut note." Wine Enthusiast

"Here's a new discovery and a fabulous value. Closed in a handy screw-cap bottle, the Tiefenbrunner 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Blanc Merus (the name of the grape is written in both French and in German as "Weissburgunder" on the front label) shows a luminous golden appearance with an immediate aroma of flint or crushed quartz, which is the first thing you notice on the bouquet. As that striking mineral note recedes, the wine produces aromas of ripe peach, honey and a touch of beeswax. This Pinot Bianco reveals a solid, mid-weight structure with a second wave of mineral intensity that makes for an elegant finish." Robert Parker

Pinot Blanc Anna Turmhof, with its aromas of pear, peach and floral notes, is an unusually soft and beautiful wine, rich and concentrated, with class and refinement. Its fresh acidity accompanies it lively until the very pleasant finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Alpine herb and white stone-fruit aromas segue over to the elegant, savory palate along with hints of hazelnut and ripe pear. It's medium bodied and fresh, with tangy acidity." Wine Enthusiast

"Everything fits neatly in this complex, smoky pinot bianco that marries medium-full body and textural richness with mineral freshness and just a touch of green-bean character that adds to the impression of liveliness at the long finish." James Suckling

"This lovely expression underlines freshness and sharpness with a very precise and linear quality of aromas, starting with citrus and crunchy pear, then transitioning softly to crushed mineral and quartz. The Tiefenbrunner 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Blanc Anna is another gorgeous expression of a grape that excels in this cool-climate wine region located in the far north of Italy. Lagrein Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2018

Red classic from South Tyrol in a strong garnet red with violet reflections. Discreet bouquet of violets and red cherry fruit. Fine tannins, a round body and a discreet acidity make this red a high-quality companion for regional-rustic cuisine. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very strong, dense purple red. In the nose dark fruits, elderberries, cassis, in addition peppery nuances as well as vegetal hints. On the palate soft with a beautiful melting and balancing structure with ripe acidity and noticeable tannin. Finishes fruity and spicy." Falstaff

"A savory red with black-fruit, sweet-tobacco and flower-leaf undertones. Medium-bodied with round tannins and a flavorful finish." James Suckling

"The 2018 Lagrein Turmhof from Tiefenbrunner is dark, feral and even a bit rustic, but in the best possible way. It's as if you can smell the earth which these vines grow in. It leaps from the glass with a mix of dark, mineral-laden soil, crushed black cherry, brown spice and hints of violets. Velvety smooth from start to finish, there doesn't seem to be a single thing out of place here, hosting red and blue fruits with sweet inner florals and a core of minerality. Fine tannins clench the palate throughout the final, balanced by residual acids, and with a lasting note of tart wild berries. The Turmhof spends eight months in a mix of both small and large neutral oak, which does wonders to create an elegant expression." Vinous

"A nice choice for lamb and mushroom stew, the 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Turmhof shows an inky dark appearance and impenetrable fruit. The bouquet is powerful with a full-throttle mix of black plumy fruit, barbecue spice, tar and campfire ash. The use of oak is especially important to the brawn and concentration that this full-bodied wine will be remembered for. The bouquet shifts and evolves as the wine spends more time in the glass, showing forest floor and even an earthy touch of porcino mushroom. There is a touch of nutty bitterness on the close." Blauburgunder Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2019

The grapes for this Pinot Noir come from three sites at an altitude of up to 980 metres. Different soils of moraine deposits, limestone gravel and sand give this ruby red wine its unmistakable character. On the nose, blackberries, raspberries and cherries. On the palate, it delights with power and finesse, its harmony and elegance thrilling us all the way to the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"The deep, ripe-cherry nose, without any obscuring oak, leads you into this well crafted, medium-bodied pinot noir that has some silky tannins that mark the texture through the long, graceful finish." James Suckling

"This is a true expression of this delicately fragrant grape with a slightly more robust center of gravity. The Tiefenbrunner 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Turmhof (closed in a screw-cap bottle) offers a good amount of fruit intensity that comes across with extra layers of fragrant cherry, potting soil, pressed rose and dried apricot. The wine reveals a dark ruby color with a dense appearance, and that extra concentration is felt across the supple texture and soft fruit weight offered in this classic vintage, best enjoyed with a hearty liver and onions to keep things healthy." Linticlarus Lagrein Riserva smells of ripe plum, smoke, tobacco, leather, spices and liquorice. Powerful and persistent until the extended final. Enthuses with personality and class! SUPERIORE.DE

"Powerful shining purple garnet with a black core. Intensely scented of ripe blackberries, rose hips, some undergrowth and juniper on the nose. Animating palate entry, complex on the palate, builds in layers and pulls through with sturdy tannin, nice play in the acidity, doesn't seem bulky, great finish." Falstaff

"Deep blackberry and cherry nose with just a touch of 90% bitter chocolate that somehow remains very bright. Concentrated, creamy and silky on the palate, then the tannins build beautifully at the long, uplifting finish." James Suckling

"Pouring to an inky black and super concentrated appearance, the Tiefenbrunner 2018 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Linticlarus produces thick waves of dried blackberry and tarry fruit with barbecue smoke and gardening soils. There are subtle hints of licorice and dried rosemary or oregano woven into the rich, full-bodied fiber of this powerful Lagrein Riserva with a 14% alcohol content, meant for a meat casserole." "Rich sparkling ruby red with black-red accents. Pronounced aroma of heart cherries and ripe wild berries, a hint of white pepper and mocha on the nose. Taut and juicy, well-integrated tannin, balanced use of wood, ripe nuances, coherent, lively finish." Falstaff

"I love the interplay of delicately smoky oak and black cherry on the nose of this Sub-Alpine pinot noir. With some aeration, a freshly sliced red-beet note develops. Although the gentle tannins are slightly sappy, this fits very well with the medium-bodied, lively palate. Quite a dry, crisp finish that needs some time to harmonize further." James Suckling

"The Tiefenbrunner 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Linticlarus is a beautiful wine with a bit of spice and dried fruit, iron ore and blue flower, all woven together with a tight and seamless stitch. The wine plays forward over the palate with increasing intensity and balance. Stretches across the palate with fruit melt, powerful body, well-integrated, interwoven tannins, sturdy texture, with plenty of pressure and length on the finish." Falstaff

"Good concentration, combined with fine tannins and a moderately sleek body for 14% alcohol, making this an impressive cabernet-merlot blend. The long and surprisingly rich finish, though not enormously complex, caresses the palate." James Suckling

“Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner” Müller Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2018

Italy's most famous Müller Thurgau from a single vineyard at an altitude of over 1,000 metres: sublimely sparkling straw yellow, very precise, clean aroma, a potpourri of tropical fruits, some camomile and a hint of nutmeg. Astonishingly full-bodied on the palate with lots of juicy fruit. An elegant, extra-dry Müller Thurgau from the highest Müller Thurgau site in Europe with an impressive complexity and length for the grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brilliant, intense lemon yellow. In the nose after cold smoke, filigree, has something of cherry blossoms, after candied lemon zest, needs a lot of air. On the palate dense, very salty with lots of pressure, stretches nicely over the tongue, crisp acidity, opens on rich yellow fruit, mineral, very long finish." Falstaff

"A wonderful white with so much lime, mineral and green-papaya character. It's full-bodied and layered with gorgeous fruit and flavors. Really tangy. Best Muller in the world! Goes on and on." James Suckling

"The 2018 Müller-Thurgau Feldmarschall von Fenner from Tiefenbrunner is luminous gold in color with green hues in the glass. Its bouquet is stunning and perfumed with lime citrus-infused yellow flowers, white smoke minerality, wild herbs, green apple and savory exotic spice. There's a richness to its depths of textural white orchard fruits, perfectly offset by stimulating acidity and a cooling hint of mint leaf, as inner florals amass toward the close. Wow, there's so much going on here, and yet this is still so youthfully poised. I can imagine that a few years in the cellar will really bring the Feldmarschall to life." Vinous

"Delicate aromas of lime, nutmeg and camomile. Rich and complex yet fresh and vibrant with floral green fruit and long plummy graceful finish; will develop further." Decanter

"Made from sky-high vineyards situated at 3,280 feet above sea-level, this radiant white opens with enticing scents of white spring flower, yellow stone fruit, alpine herb and mountain hay. The medium-bodied palate is full of flavor and finesse, delivering ripe yellow peach, apricot and a dollop of vanilla. A hazelnut note lingers on the finish alongside crisp acidity and saline mineral notes." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Vigna Rachtl" Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2015

“Vigna Rachtl” Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2015

The second vintage of Sauvignon Bianco, from a micro-location of just 0.4 hectares, gets its fine flint and graphite nose from the porphyry soils of Unteraicha in the municipality of Völs. Very subtle on the palate with a fine balance of acidity and salt, fresh fruit and a long finish. If you can call one of the just about 2,000 bottles of this vintage your own, you can count yourself lucky! SUPERIORE.DE

"Cool and tart, clearly planty nose with slightly violent and floral notes, green and yellow fruity hints, some asparagus as well as quite clear, earthy minerality and red berry nuances. Mature, firmly knitted, tangy, juicy fruit, fine, lively acidity and clear, light earthy and salty minerality, very fine tannin grip, good substance and depth, dense and persistent, multi-layered, still very young looking, in the background nutty and delicate vanilla hints of wood, vegetable aromas reminiscent of artichokes and asparagus, very good, firm, somewhat warm finish."Markus Hofschuster

"Sparkling bright straw yellow with green notes. The nose shows attractive notes of gooseberry, capers and sage. On the palate full-bodied and dense, opens with a lot of present fruit, describes a wide arch, long aftertaste." Falstaff

"Bright golden-tinged straw. Fresh aromas of gunflint and licorice complement notes of yellow melon and green fig. Bright, fresh and juicy, with very clean and precise flavors similar to the aromas. Closes long, very clean and bright. A beautiful, classically dry and very perfumed Sauvignon Blanc Riserva. The Rachtl is a small vineyard (0.4 hectares) in the southern Isarco Valley that gives a very mineral wine unlike any other made on the property." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Very typical sauvignon character of limes, celery and fennel on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. Shows tension and focus."  James Suckling

"The 2015 Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Rachtl is a mid-weight wine that could be considered full-bodied on the Sauvignon Blanc spectrum. The tangy, semi-aromatic variety rarely shows more richness and body than you get here. The wine opens to a pale gold appearance with fragrant aromas of stone fruit, candied peach, saffron, wild sage and lemon curd. This is a wonderful expression that makes a lasting and elegant impression on all the senses. Smoke, licorice and flint appear as delicate background notes. Only 2,200 bottles were made." About the winemakersTiefenbrunnerTrentino-Alto Adige
    Tiefenbrunner

South Tyrol is different. With the Tiefenbrunners anyway. Nobody else has three hectares of vineyards at 1,000 meters above sea level. No one else cultivates Müller-Thurgau at such high altitudes. No one else has such a Müller-Thurgau, which is often mistaken for Riesling in blind tastings. And no one else names such a dream wine, which is awarded annually worldwide, after a field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian K & K army.

One could probably go on for a while with "nobody else..." or at least with "hardly anyone else". Because there is much here that is unique. From the vineyards, which reach from 250 m above sea level up to 1,000 m and are divided between three neighbouring villages: Entiklar, Kurtatsch and Margreid (Niclara, Cortaccia e Magrè) and which, due to their respective locations, soil composition and microclimate, also form the logical wine lines of the Tiefenbrunner family. There is no vineyard without a massive rock at the end.

In the lower locations on the right bank of the Adige, loamy soils dominate, alluvial deposits of former glaciers, with a multitude of rocks that the rivers Eisack and Adige have washed out of the mountains over the centuries and into the South Tyrolean lowlands. In the medium-height area, already rocky subsoil, partly volcanic, calcareous, granite and weathered dolomite with fertile mixed soil and mild climate, for which South Tyrol is famous, but with strong cooling at night by the wind from the nearby Dolomites and Alps, which characterizes this clear freshness and fruitiness of South Tyrol's wines.

In the high, considerably cooler locations, the marble, porphyry, granite, limestone and dolomite rocks are often covered by less than a metre of soil, which is why the yields are often ridiculously low, but a wonderful minerality brings finesse to the wines.

"Nature sets the pace for us. We adapt to it and dedicate a site to each variety in which it can develop in the best possible way" explains Christof, who has been managing the Tiefenbrunner family's winery in the magnificent Castell Turmhof since 2000 in the fifth generation with his wife Sabine. There are countless grape varieties in South Tyrol. In the unique Castell Turmhof winery, where even stone vaults from the 12th century are still in use, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Cabernet-Sauvignon, as well as the specialities Gold Muscatel and Rose Muscatel ripen for a total of 29 labels in four wine lines.

Incidentally, the top wine of the house is named after Baron Franz Philipp Fenner von Fenneberg, who was actually born on Fenneberg, where these unique grapes grow today.

"Distinctiveness and fashion trends are not compatible. This is why we press wines that can be clearly assigned on the basis of their characteristics and character. They have a very own, clear personality: matured over time and shaped by origin and history." With this credo, which produces many quite different wine specialities, the family and the team around Christof perfectly continues the legacy of father Herbert Tiefenbrunner, one of the pioneers in South Tyrol's viticulture.

For almost half a century, 40 independent small winegrowers from about 45 hectares have also been supplying the Tiefenbrunners with perfect grapes from "handmade vineyards". This too is hardly to be found anymore. It is hardly surprising that the electricity is generated by a small hydroelectric power station, which was built by the grandfather around 1900. As an Italian journalist, exhausted after the scramble in the mountainous vineyards and overwhelmed by all these unique impressions, with the fresh white wines and a board with bacon and cheese in the "Jausenstation" (what an understatement) in the enchanting picturesque courtyard of the castle he wrote his notes, he chose as his headline: "I am in paradise". SUPERIORE.DE

"Son Christof, a personality of rare discretion, is responsible for the elegant, delicate and never exaggerated wines, all of solid structure, expressive and always attentive to the characteristics of the grape varieties and different terroirs."Gambero Rosso
