“Merus” Vernatsch Alto Adige DOC 2025
Vernatsch is South Tyrol in its most honest form. The autochthonous red wine variety – also known as Schiava – has accompanied the South Tyrolean wine route for centuries: light, easy to drink, uncomplicated in the best sense of the word. Not a wine that wants to impress. One that invites. Tiefenbrunner has been cultivating it since 1968 on three different sites between 220 and 650 metres – calcareous dolomite soils in the high altitudes of Penon, Hofstatt and Rain, limestone gravel soils from moraine deposits in Entiklar and on the Margreider Leiten, red sandy loam in Brenntal and Frauenriegel. Each site has its part to play. Vinified in concrete vats and large wooden barrels – the only use of wood in the entire Merus line.

“Merus” Müller Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2025
Tiefenbrunner and Müller-Thurgau – is more than just a grape variety and a winery. The family has taken this cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale to the highest altitudes of their vineyards and created an icon in the process: the Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner, one of the most famous high-altitude wines in Italy, at over 1,000 metres. And Merus is the start of this story – first vintage: 1968, the grapes come exclusively from the Graun vineyard at 750 to 900 metres above sea level – calcareous-loamy dolomite soils, south-southeast exposure, the coolest of the Merus sites. This altitude is no coincidence: Müller-Thurgau needs coolness to develop its characteristic herbal flavour. Vinified in concrete vats – like Chardonnay, but with a different result.

Merus – the Latin word for pure, genuine, unmixed. The Tiefenbrunner family has given its entry-level line a name that says it all: no distractions, no overlaying – just the character of the grape variety and the place. Chardonnay Merus comes from two very different sites that complement each other: Penon, Hofstatt and Rain at 400 to 650 metres, on calcareous dolomite soils with south-southeast exposure, stand for freshness and minerality. Margreid, Punggl and Kurtinig at the bottom of the valley at 210 to 220 metres, on sandy-limestone alluvial soils, stand for fullness and fruit. Vinified in concrete vats.

“Merus” Gewürztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2025
Gewürztraminer is the local variety of the South Tyrolean lowlands – and Kurtatsch is its home. Here, between Bolzano and Lake Garda, on the South Tyrolean Wine Route, the grape variety has found the Mediterranean warmth and Alpine freshness that make its distinctive bouquet possible in the first place. Tiefenbrunner has been cultivating it since 1968 – and Merus Gewürztraminer is its most accessible expression. Three sites give this wine its multi-layered character: Penon, Hofstatt and Rain at 400 to 650 metres with calcareous dolomite soils and eastern exposure – for freshness and minerality. Entiklar and the Margreider Leiten at 220 to 350 metres, on limestone gravel soils from moraine deposits – for structure and depth. Brenntal and Frauenriegel at 220 to 350 metres, on red, sandy loam soil – for warmth and fullness. Vinified in concrete vats, 5.0 g/l residual sugar – subtle, never sweet.

Chardonnay Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2023
The historic fortified tower in the centre of Entiklar, which gives the winery its name and its middle line its character: structured, expressive, from selected vineyards. One step above the Merus – and you can feel it. Turmhof Chardonnay comes from the same three vineyard sites as Merus, but with a lower yield: 50 to 60 hectolitres per hectare instead of 65 to 75. The altitude range of 210 to 650 metres remains the same – calcareous dolomite soils in Penon, Hofstatt and Rain, calcareous gravel soils from moraine deposits in Entiklar and on the Margreider Leiten, sandy-calcareous alluvial soils in Margreid, Punggl and Kurtinig. What distinguishes Turmhof from Merus is also decided in the cellar: partial ageing in large oak barrels.

Pinot Grigio from South Tyrol – this is in a different league to many of the pleasing mass-produced wines from the Veneto. Pinot Noir is a grape variety that seeks altitude. It finds it in South Tyrol – and Tiefenbrunner has selected the highest and coolest Pinot Noir sites in the entire portfolio for the Turmhof: Völser Aicha at 600 to 980 metres, on clayey sandy soil over grey porphyry, exposed to the south. Graun at 700 to 940 metres, calcareous-loamy dolomite soil. Penon, Hofstatt and Rain at 400 to 650 metres, calcareous dolomite soils. Mazon, Pinzon and Glen at 400 to 550 metres, sandy loam soil on dolomite rock. Four soil profiles, one wine. Gewürztraminer Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2023
The Turmhof Castle Winery in Entiklar near Kurtatsch is one of the most traditional family businesses in South Tyrol. Christof and Sabine Tiefenbrunner are now the fifth generation to run the winery – with vineyards that range from 220 to over 1,000 metres above sea level and offer the ideal location for every variety. This Gewürztraminer combines grapes from two characterful sites between 220 and 350 metres: Entiklar/Margreider Leiten with limestone gravel soils from moraine deposits facing south to south-east and Brenntal/Frauenriegel, where red, sandy loam soil faces east. This combination gives the wine both aromatic depth and mineral freshness.

Less than 1,000 bottles of this Gewürztraminer Riserva are produced each year. The grapes are harvested at the end of December - just when they are finely coated with the noble fungus Botrytis cinerea. Golden, almost amber-coloured sheen, quince, dried fruit and rose petals on the nose. Concentrated on the palate, delicate honey flavour, sweet and long. SUPERIORE.DE

South Tyrol is different. With the Tiefenbrunners anyway. No one else has three hectares of vineyards at 1,000 metres above sea level. No one else grows Müller-Thurgau at such altitudes. No one else has such a Müller-Thurgau, which is often mistaken for Riesling in blind tastings. And no one else names such a dream wine, which is awarded annually worldwide, after a field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian K & K army.
One could probably go on for a while with "No one else..." or at least with "hardly anyone". Because there is a lot that is unique here. From the vineyards, which range from 250 m above sea level up to 1,000 m and are divided among three neighbouring villages: Entiklar, Kurtatsch and Margreid (Niclara, Cortaccia e Magrè) and which, due to their respective location, soil composition and microclimate, also result in the logical wine lines of the Tiefenbrunner family. There is no vineyard that does not have a massive rock towering at its end.
At lower altitudes on the right bank of the Adige, loamy soils dominate, alluvial soil of former glaciers, with a variety of rocks that the rivers Eisack and Adige have washed out of the mountains into the South Tyrolean lowlands over the centuries. In the medium-high area already rocky subsoil, partly volcanic, calcareous, granite and weathered dolomite with fertile mixed soil overlay and mild climate, for which South Tyrol is known, but with strong cooling at night by the wind from the nearby Dolomites and Alps, which characterises this clear freshness and fruit of the wines of South Tyrol.
In the high, significantly cooler sites, there is often only an earth layer of less than one metre above the rock of marble, porphyry, granite, lime and dolomite, which is why the yields are often ridiculously low, but a wonderful minerality brings finesse to the wines.
"Nature sets the pace for us. We adapt to it and dedicate a site to each variety where it can develop in the best possible way," explains Christof, the fifth generation of the Tiefenbrunner family to run the winery in the magnificent Castell Turmhof with his wife Sabine since 2000. There are countless grape varieties in South Tyrol. In the unique Castell Turmhof winery, where even stone vaults from the 12th century are still used, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Cabernet-Sauvignon, as well as the specialities Goldmuskateller and Rosenmuskateller ripen for a total of 29 labels in four wine lines.
Incidentally, the top wine of the house is named after Baron Franz Philipp Fenner von Fenneberg, who was actually born on the Fenneberg, where these unique grapes grow today.
"Distinctiveness and fashion trends are not compatible. That's why we press wines that can be clearly identified by their expression and character. They have their own clear personality: matured over time and shaped by origin and history." With this credo, which produces many quite different wine specialities, the family and the team around Christof perfectly continue the legacy of father Herbert Tiefenbrunner, one of the pioneers in South Tyrol's viticulture.
For almost half a century, 40 independent small winegrowers from about 45 ha have also been supplying the Tiefenbrunners with perfect grapes from "hand-worked vineyards". This is also something you hardly find any more. The fact that they generate their own electricity in a small hydroelectric power station, which their grandfather built around 1900, comes as little surprise. When an Italian journalist, exhausted after scrambling in the mountainous vineyards and overwhelmed by all these unique impressions, wrote his notes over fresh white wines and a board with bacon and cheese in the "snack station" (what an understatement) in the enchanting picturesque castle courtyard, he chose as his headline: "I am in paradise". "Son Christof, a personality of rare discretion, is responsible for the elegant, delicate and never overdrawn wines, all of solid structure, expressive and always attentive to the characteristics of the grape varieties and different terroirs." Gambero Rosso
