Chardonnay Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2021
Chardonnay Turmhof has a multi-layered bouquet of clear, well-defined apple and pear flavours, flowers and grasses. Fresh and delicately savoury on the palate, lively and very harmonious. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Chardonnay Turmhof 2021 opens in the glass with a hint of crushed stone that emphasises the musky notes of peach and pear. It has a soft texture with a cooling minerality that balances the ripe fruit of the orchard. The 2021 finishes savoury and crisp, leaving a saline note and a hint of nectarine." Vinous
"This wine highlights the estate's history of winemaking in the Alto Adige. Concentrated aromas of roasted pear and quince join with notes of banana and sweet spice. The palate is creamy and lush but ample acidity keeps everything fresh. Flavors of roast apple, dried flowers and mountain minerality work in unison to elevate this wine." Wine Enthusiast

Pinot Grigio Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2021
Pinot Grigio Turmhof is a rich Pinot Gris with a fresh scent of apple and yellow peach, pure and round in flavour, with strong fruit, delicate acidity, good length and always with the refinement of the house. SUPERIORE.DE
"Forward and inviting this beauty of a Pinot Grigio is loaded with aromas of ripe pears, melon, candied lemon zest and roasted nuts. The aging in wood rounds out the wine and the lees aging gives it a rich texture. Flavors of apples dominate the palate but there is more waiting in the wings, hibernating, asking you to wait just a little bit longer to see what can happen." Wine Enthusiast

"This wine seesaws between lush tropical fruit notes and tart green apples on the nose. In between the fruit are fresh aromas of wild yellow flowers and gravel. The palate is waxy with honey, roasted hazel nuts and baked pears. “Tardus” Gewürztraminer Vendemmia Tardiva Alto Adige DOC 2018 amabile
"We follow in the footsteps of great Alsatian Gewürztraminers and thus breathe new, South Tyrolean life into the venerable tradition of semi-dry wines." Christof Tiefenbrunner
The grapes of this golden-yellow Spätlese come from chalky gravel soils with moraine deposits. The bouquet has a delicate, seductive scent of roses, dried fruit and citrus fruits. Surprisingly powerful on the palate with fine residual sweetness and a lively acid wire that never makes the wine broad or too powerful. The finish is intense, juicy, harmonious and with a mild honey note. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense dried-fruit and creme-brulee character with a hint of sealing wax give this rich and creamy sweet white a lot of appeal, the same kind of full, weighty mouth feel as a high-end Sauternes. The interplay of bitter and sweet on the finish enables this to finish pretty dry." James Suckling

Ruby red Pinot Noir with garnet red shimmer. Fine fruity bouquet of wild berries and cherries. An elegant red, well-proportioned and never overloaded, but with a clear identity and elegant character. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich sparkling ruby red with black-red accents. Pronounced aroma of heart cherries and ripe wild berries, a hint of white pepper and mocha on the nose. Taut and juicy, well-integrated tannin, balanced use of wood, ripe nuances, coherent, lively finish." Falstaff
"I love the interplay of delicately smoky oak and black cherry on the nose of this Sub-Alpine pinot noir. With some aeration, a freshly sliced red-beet note develops. Although the gentle tannins are slightly sappy, this fits very well with the medium-bodied, lively palate. Quite a dry, crisp finish that needs some time to harmonize further." James Suckling
"The Tiefenbrunner 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Linticlarus is a beautiful wine with a bit of spice and dried fruit, iron ore and blue flower, all woven together with a tight and seamless stitch. The wine plays forward over the palate with increasing intensity and balance. This is an elegant wine, and it's impossible not to be excited by these quality results with Pinot Noir from the far north of Italy. This expression concludes with length and a freshness that can be counted in minutes." Wine Advocate

“Vigna Rachtl” Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2017
Sauvignon Bianco Rachtl comes from a micro-location of just 0.4 ha. It gets its fine flint and graphite nose from the porphyry soils near Unteraicha in the municipality of Völs. Very subtle on the palate with a fine salt-acid interplay, fresh fruit and a long-lasting finish. If you can call one of the just about 2,000 bottles of this vintage your own, you can consider yourself lucky! SUPERIORE.DE
"A special feature is the occurrence of grey porphyry. The deep soil layers are dominated by sandy-limestone rock flour. The berries are gently pressed after an eight to twelve hour maceration period. Half of the must is matured in Tonneaux barrels and half in large wooden barrels. Finely spicy, still slightly woody bouquet, acacia, mirabelle tart, young pineapple, light berries and blossoms, earthy minerality reminiscent of flint. Very Burgundian style. In the mouth creamy density with a juicy-compact attack, mineral infused, very long and substantial, polished fullness, very serious style with earthy complexity. Well structured, with a very clear texture. Simmers on for ever, beautifully defined." Weinwisser
"Symphonic, from a tiny plot near Fiè allo Sciliar in the Isarco valley. A crescendo of pineapple, lime and kiwi aromas, with notes of rosemary, mint and ginger." Decanter

"The Tiefenbrunner 2019 Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Riserva Rachtl reveals mid–weight intensity with orange zest, almond paste, honey and hints of spicy saffron. The wine glides smoothly over the palate with plush richness that is capped off by fresh acidity. This is a bigger style of Sauvignon Blanc, with some modest age on it, that opens the door to a wide range of pairing, such as scallops in butter sauce or stuffed clams. Winemaking sees a combination of tonneaux and stainless steel, and only 2,000 bottles were released." Wine Advocate

Also very noble, polished, firm and concentrated fruit on the palate, very fine, lively acidity, herbal-vegetable notes, delicate almond tones and floral traces, a little light tobacco and smoke in the background, has power but also elegance, deep and multi-layered, a hint of vanilla in the background, herbal nuances, chalky-salty minerality, still very young, very good to long, polished, dense finish." Wein-Plus
"Sparkling straw yellow with light green nuances. Finely characterised nose with notes of pineapple, banana and some flint. Shows very good tension on the palate, fresh, crisp fruit, present but very well-integrated acidity, lingers for a long time." Falstaff
"The wine is initially restrained, but eventually opens up and presents aromas of fresh red and green apples, lemon zest and a hint of oak. On the palate, it is rich but well balanced and fresh with flavours of quince and pear. This refined wine will reward you with a few years in the cellar." Wine Enthusiast

South Tyrol is different. With the Tiefenbrunners anyway. No one else has three hectares of vineyards at 1,000 metres above sea level. No one else grows Müller-Thurgau at such altitudes. No one else has such a Müller-Thurgau, which is often mistaken for Riesling in blind tastings. And no one else names such a dream wine, which is awarded annually worldwide, after a field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian K & K army.
One could probably go on for a while with "No one else..." or at least with "hardly anyone". Because there is a lot that is unique here. From the vineyards, which range from 250 m above sea level up to 1,000 m and are divided among three neighbouring villages: Entiklar, Kurtatsch and Margreid (Niclara, Cortaccia e Magrè) and which, due to their respective location, soil composition and microclimate, also result in the logical wine lines of the Tiefenbrunner family. There is no vineyard that does not have a massive rock towering at its end.
At lower altitudes on the right bank of the Adige, loamy soils dominate, alluvial soil of former glaciers, with a variety of rocks that the rivers Eisack and Adige have washed out of the mountains into the South Tyrolean lowlands over the centuries. In the medium-high area already rocky subsoil, partly volcanic, calcareous, granite and weathered dolomite with fertile mixed soil overlay and mild climate, for which South Tyrol is known, but with strong cooling at night by the wind from the nearby Dolomites and Alps, which characterises this clear freshness and fruit of the wines of South Tyrol.
In the high, significantly cooler sites, there is often only an earth layer of less than one metre above the rock of marble, porphyry, granite, lime and dolomite, which is why the yields are often ridiculously low, but a wonderful minerality brings finesse to the wines.
"Nature sets the pace for us. We adapt to it and dedicate a site to each variety where it can develop in the best possible way," explains Christof, the fifth generation of the Tiefenbrunner family to run the winery in the magnificent Castell Turmhof with his wife Sabine since 2000. There are countless grape varieties in South Tyrol. In the unique Castell Turmhof winery, where even stone vaults from the 12th century are still used, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Cabernet-Sauvignon, as well as the specialities Goldmuskateller and Rosenmuskateller ripen for a total of 29 labels in four wine lines.
Incidentally, the top wine of the house is named after Baron Franz Philipp Fenner von Fenneberg, who was actually born on the Fenneberg, where these unique grapes grow today.
"Distinctiveness and fashion trends are not compatible. That's why we press wines that can be clearly identified by their expression and character. They have their own clear personality: matured over time and shaped by origin and history." With this credo, which produces many quite different wine specialities, the family and the team around Christof perfectly continue the legacy of father Herbert Tiefenbrunner, one of the pioneers in South Tyrol's viticulture.
For almost half a century, 40 independent small winegrowers from about 45 ha have also been supplying the Tiefenbrunners with perfect grapes from "hand-worked vineyards". This is also something you hardly find any more. The fact that they generate their own electricity in a small hydroelectric power station, which their grandfather built around 1900, comes as little surprise. When an Italian journalist, exhausted after scrambling in the mountainous vineyards and overwhelmed by all these unique impressions, wrote his notes over fresh white wines and a board with bacon and cheese in the "snack station" (what an understatement) in the enchanting picturesque castle courtyard, he chose as his headline: "I am in paradise". "Son Christof, a personality of rare discretion, is responsible for the elegant, delicate and never overdrawn wines, all of solid structure, expressive and always attentive to the characteristics of the grape varieties and different terroirs." Gambero Rosso
