Blauburgunder Turmhof Alto Adige DOC 2019
The grapes for this Pinot Noir come from three sites at an altitude of up to 980 metres. Different soils of moraine deposits, limestone gravel and sand give this ruby red wine its unmistakable character. On the nose, blackberries, raspberries and cherries. On the palate, it delights with power and finesse, its harmony and elegance thrilling us all the way to the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The deep, ripe-cherry nose, without any obscuring oak, leads you into this well crafted, medium-bodied pinot noir that has some silky tannins that mark the texture through the long, graceful finish." James Suckling
"This is a true expression of this delicately fragrant grape with a slightly more robust center of gravity. The Tiefenbrunner 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Turmhof (closed in a screw-cap bottle) offers a good amount of fruit intensity that comes across with extra layers of fragrant cherry, potting soil, pressed rose and dried apricot. The wine reveals a dark ruby color with a dense appearance, and that extra concentration is felt across the supple texture and soft fruit weight offered in this classic vintage, best enjoyed with a hearty liver and onions to keep things healthy." “Linticlarus” Pinot Nero Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018
Ruby red Pinot Noir with garnet red shimmer. Fine fruity bouquet of wild berries and cherries. An elegant red, well-proportioned and never overloaded, but with a clear identity and elegant character. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich sparkling ruby red with black-red accents. Pronounced aroma of heart cherries and ripe wild berries, a hint of white pepper and mocha on the nose. Taut and juicy, well-integrated tannin, balanced use of wood, ripe nuances, coherent, lively finish." Falstaff
"I love the interplay of delicately smoky oak and black cherry on the nose of this Sub-Alpine pinot noir. With some aeration, a freshly sliced red-beet note develops. Although the gentle tannins are slightly sappy, this fits very well with the medium-bodied, lively palate. Quite a dry, crisp finish that needs some time to harmonize further." James Suckling
"The Tiefenbrunner 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Linticlarus is a beautiful wine with a bit of spice and dried fruit, iron ore and blue flower, all woven together with a tight and seamless stitch. The wine plays forward over the palate with increasing intensity and balance. This is an elegant wine, and it's impossible not to be excited by these quality results with Pinot Noir from the far north of Italy. This expression concludes with length and a freshness that can be counted in minutes." Robert Parker

“Tardus” Gewürztraminer Vendemmia Tardiva Alto Adige DOC 2018 amabile
"We follow in the footsteps of great Alsatian Gewürztraminers and thus breathe new, South Tyrolean life into the venerable tradition of semi-dry wines." Christof Tiefenbrunner
The grapes of this golden-yellow Spätlese come from chalky gravel soils with moraine deposits. The bouquet has a delicate, seductive scent of roses, dried fruit and citrus fruits. Surprisingly powerful on the palate with fine residual sweetness and a lively acid wire that never makes the wine broad or too powerful. The finish is intense, juicy, harmonious and with a mild honey note. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dense dried-fruit and creme-brulee character with a hint of sealing wax give this rich and creamy sweet white a lot of appeal, the same kind of full, weighty mouth feel as a high-end Sauternes. The interplay of bitter and sweet on the finish enables this to finish pretty dry." James Suckling

“Linticlarus Cuvée” Cabernet-Merlot Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2018
The vines of this fascinating cuvée grow on deep, loose moraine soil. The eye sees dark garnet red. Intense bouquet of flowers and black berries. In the body, this cuvée is well structured, blackberry is joined by currant, a little tobacco and a hint of tar. Fine tannins lead into a long and juicy finish. Great ageing potential! SUPERIORE.DE
"Intensely bright garnet with a dark core and violet accents. Opens charmingly on the nose with notes of amarena, stewed plums and rock candy, plus toasty aromas and a hint of cardamom. Stretches across the palate with fruit melt, powerful body, well-integrated, interwoven tannins, sturdy texture, with plenty of pressure and length on the finish." Falstaff
"Good concentration, combined with fine tannins and a moderately sleek body for 14% alcohol, making this an impressive cabernet-merlot blend. The long and surprisingly rich finish, though not enormously complex, caresses the palate." James Suckling

“Vigna Rachtl” Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2015
The second vintage of Sauvignon Bianco, from a micro-location of just 0.4 hectares, gets its fine flint and graphite nose from the porphyry soils of Unteraicha in the municipality of Völs. Very subtle on the palate with a fine balance of acidity and salt, fresh fruit and a long finish. If you can call one of the just about 2,000 bottles of this vintage your own, you can count yourself lucky! SUPERIORE.DE
"Cool and tart, clearly planty nose with slightly violent and floral notes, green and yellow fruity hints, some asparagus as well as quite clear, earthy minerality and red berry nuances. Mature, firmly knitted, tangy, juicy fruit, fine, lively acidity and clear, light earthy and salty minerality, very fine tannin grip, good substance and depth, dense and persistent, multi-layered, still very young looking, in the background nutty and delicate vanilla hints of wood, vegetable aromas reminiscent of artichokes and asparagus, very good, firm, somewhat warm finish."Markus Hofschuster
"Sparkling bright straw yellow with green notes. The nose shows attractive notes of gooseberry, capers and sage. On the palate full-bodied and dense, opens with a lot of present fruit, describes a wide arch, long aftertaste." Falstaff
"Bright golden-tinged straw. Fresh aromas of gunflint and licorice complement notes of yellow melon and green fig. Bright, fresh and juicy, with very clean and precise flavors similar to the aromas. Closes long, very clean and bright. A beautiful, classically dry and very perfumed Sauvignon Blanc Riserva. The Rachtl is a small vineyard (0.4 hectares) in the southern Isarco Valley that gives a very mineral wine unlike any other made on the property." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)
"Very typical sauvignon character of limes, celery and fennel on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. Shows tension and focus." James Suckling
"The 2015 Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Rachtl is a mid-weight wine that could be considered full-bodied on the Sauvignon Blanc spectrum. The tangy, semi-aromatic variety rarely shows more richness and body than you get here. The wine opens to a pale gold appearance with fragrant aromas of stone fruit, candied peach, saffron, wild sage and lemon curd. This is a wonderful expression that makes a lasting and elegant impression on all the senses. Smoke, licorice and flint appear as delicate background notes. Only 2,200 bottles were made." “Vigna Rachtl” Sauvignon Bianco Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2017
Sauvignon Bianco Rachtl comes from a micro-location of just 0.4 ha. It gets its fine flint and graphite nose from the porphyry soils near Unteraicha in the municipality of Völs. Very subtle on the palate with a fine salt-acid interplay, fresh fruit and a long-lasting finish. If you can call one of the just about 2,000 bottles of this vintage your own, you can consider yourself lucky! SUPERIORE.DE
"A special feature is the occurrence of grey porphyry. The deep soil layers are dominated by sandy-limestone rock flour. The berries are gently pressed after an eight to twelve hour maceration period. Half of the must is matured in Tonneaux barrels and half in large wooden barrels. Finely spicy, still slightly woody bouquet, acacia, mirabelle tart, young pineapple, light berries and blossoms, earthy minerality reminiscent of flint. Very Burgundian style. In the mouth creamy density with a juicy-compact attack, mineral infused, very long and substantial, polished fullness, very serious style with earthy complexity. Well structured, with a very clear texture. Simmers on for ever, beautifully defined." Weinwisser
"Symphonic, from a tiny plot near Fiè allo Sciliar in the Isarco valley. A crescendo of pineapple, lime and kiwi aromas, with notes of rosemary, mint and ginger." Decanter

"A very complex sauvignon blanc with a ton of smoky and flinty aromas, as well as lemon, grapefruit zest and a touch of melon. The full body and bold structure are matched by fresh acidity that lifts the long, supple finish." James Suckling
"A single-vineyard expression, the 2018 Alto Adige Sauvignon Blanc Rachtl is a rich, full-bodied wine with plenty of exotic fruit, golden papaya and ripe honeydew melon. It glides smoothly over the plate with an extraordinary texture and fiber that is glossy and light, but it's also sturdy and generous at the same time. This is a standout expression of Sauvignon Blanc and a very rare wine indeed. The only distraction is that the wine is packed in an unnecessarily heavy glass bottle." Robert Parker

The most famous Müller Thurgau of Italy: sublime sparkling straw yellow, very precise, clean scent, a potpourri of tropical fruits, some chamomile and a touch of nutmeg. On the palate it is surprisingly full-bodied and with lots of juicy fruit. An elegant, extra dry Müller Thurgau from the highest Müller Thurgau location in Europe with an impressive complexity and length for the grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE
"The "Feldmarschall" could be described as a kind of primordial figure of South Tyrolean cult wines, since he has long been a household name for insiders beyond all fashions. The Müller- Thurgau- vines grow at about 1.000m above sea level on sand, porphyry and dolomite limestone. It is matured in wood and stainless steel. The 2017 is still amazingly fruity with ripe mango, juicy peach and white stone fruit. In the mouth it is dense and creamy, again with rich, ripe vineyard peach and fine herbal notes." Weinwisser
"Bright, glistening straw yellow with a golden shimmer. Fruity nose with many layers, young apricot, raspberry, white flowers, delicate honey. On the palate it is smooth and round, opening up salty and fruity in the middle, powerful yet light-footed, coherent in its approach and progression, dancing to the final." Falstaff
"The 2017 Alto Adige Müller Thurgau Feldmarschall Von Fenner is one of those wines that wins you over slowly. In the past, I have been aware of the reductive winemaking approach, but this hot vintage expression is raring to go from the minute the wine pours into the glass. Dried lemon peel, green melon and crushed almond all come into view. The wine makes a sturdy impression in terms of mouthfeel with ample and round contours. Serve it with a wild herb risotto." Robert Parker
"A decently rich array of peaches and melon leads to a very juicy feel on the palate, where poached pears and quince pervade in pithy mode." James Suckling
"Peach, lees and kerosene aromas. Plenty of concentration and vibrancy on the palate with fresh jasmine and herbs and lively acidity." Decanter
"Luminous straw-green. Bright, beautifully chiseled pear, peach and white flower aromas and flavors. Just a little youthfully chewy at present on a mouth-coating, dense finish that features lingering echoes of herbs." Vinous
"Heady aromas of yellow stone fruit, alpine herb and white spring wildflower virtually leap out of the glass. Made from a single vineyard nearly 3,300 feet above sea level, it's delicious, elegant and enveloping, delivering ripe apricot, peach, white grapefruit and mineral alongside fresh acidity. A wet stone note lingers on the finish." (Platz 14 - "TOP 100" 2019) Wine Enthusiast

“Vigna Toren” Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva Alto Adige DOC 2015
The debut vintage of the fourth Crus from the rare Vigna line comes from a 0.6 ha micro-location with clay and chalky gravel soils: sparkling garnet red with a slight violet shimmer. Very intense and appealing nose, smells of cassis, blackberry, tobacco and mint. Also on the palate, rich, concise fruit, mountains of cassis and cranberries, juicy and dense, builds up nicely with ripe tannin, in the final long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Sparkling, intense ruby. Opened with fine spicy notes, some cardamom and bay leaf, then ripe, dark currants, gives a fresh presence. The palate is full-bodied, unfolds with dense, very well integrated tannin, surrounded by sweet enamel, very long finish. Falstaff
"The 2015 Alto Adige Cabernet Sauvignon Toren has apparently absorbed much of the heat and sunshine of this hot vintage. The wine opens to sweet aromas of blackberry preserves and candied cherry with plummy fruit, spice and cured leather at the back. It is thick and succulent with soft tannins and lots of juicy, fruity fiber that adds to the volume and overall texture. There is a lot of ripeness and softness here. Pair it with a barbecued brisket. With only 2,400 bottles produced, this wine is available only by special order." Robert Parker

“Vigna Feldmarschall von Fenner” Müller-Thurgau Alto Adige DOC 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC
Italy's most famous Müller-Thurgau from a single vineyard at an altitude of over 1,000 metres: sublimely sparkling straw yellow, very precise, clean aroma, a potpourri of tropical fruits, some camomile and a hint of nutmeg. Astonishingly full-bodied on the palate with lots of juicy fruit. An elegant, extra-dry Müller Thurgau from the highest Müller Thurgau site in Europe with an impressive complexity and length for the grape variety. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright straw yellow. The nose is fragrant, of light honey, yellow peach, candied pineapple and ripe lemon, reverberating with meadow herbs and hay, very inviting. On the palate with a polished body, juicy and elegant at the same time, spreads beautifully over the tongue, cool fruit with racy acidity, spans a wide arc, excellent expression." Falstaff
"The intensely flinty nose pulls you into this remarkably concentrated muller thurgau that breaks the mold for this humble grape. The combination of textural complexity on the mid-palate (with some creaminess) and a long, mineral finish makes this a unique wine. Grown at an altitude of 1,000 meters in the Italian Alps." James Suckling

South Tyrol is different. With the Tiefenbrunners anyway. Nobody else has three hectares of vineyards at 1,000 meters above sea level. No one else cultivates Müller-Thurgau at such high altitudes. No one else has such a Müller-Thurgau, which is often mistaken for Riesling in blind tastings. And no one else names such a dream wine, which is awarded annually worldwide, after a field marshal of the Austro-Hungarian K & K army.
One could probably go on for a while with "nobody else..." or at least with "hardly anyone else". Because there is much here that is unique. From the vineyards, which reach from 250 m above sea level up to 1,000 m and are divided between three neighbouring villages: Entiklar, Kurtatsch and Margreid (Niclara, Cortaccia e Magrè) and which, due to their respective locations, soil composition and microclimate, also form the logical wine lines of the Tiefenbrunner family. There is no vineyard without a massive rock at the end.
In the lower locations on the right bank of the Adige, loamy soils dominate, alluvial deposits of former glaciers, with a multitude of rocks that the rivers Eisack and Adige have washed out of the mountains over the centuries and into the South Tyrolean lowlands. In the medium-height area, already rocky subsoil, partly volcanic, calcareous, granite and weathered dolomite with fertile mixed soil and mild climate, for which South Tyrol is famous, but with strong cooling at night by the wind from the nearby Dolomites and Alps, which characterizes this clear freshness and fruitiness of South Tyrol's wines.
In the high, considerably cooler locations, the marble, porphyry, granite, limestone and dolomite rocks are often covered by less than a metre of soil, which is why the yields are often ridiculously low, but a wonderful minerality brings finesse to the wines.
"Nature sets the pace for us. We adapt to it and dedicate a site to each variety in which it can develop in the best possible way" explains Christof, who has been managing the Tiefenbrunner family's winery in the magnificent Castell Turmhof since 2000 in the fifth generation with his wife Sabine. There are countless grape varieties in South Tyrol. In the unique Castell Turmhof winery, where even stone vaults from the 12th century are still in use, Müller-Thurgau, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Vernatsch, Lagrein, Cabernet-Sauvignon, as well as the specialities Gold Muscatel and Rose Muscatel ripen for a total of 29 labels in four wine lines.
Incidentally, the top wine of the house is named after Baron Franz Philipp Fenner von Fenneberg, who was actually born on Fenneberg, where these unique grapes grow today.
"Distinctiveness and fashion trends are not compatible. This is why we press wines that can be clearly assigned on the basis of their characteristics and character. They have a very own, clear personality: matured over time and shaped by origin and history." With this credo, which produces many quite different wine specialities, the family and the team around Christof perfectly continues the legacy of father Herbert Tiefenbrunner, one of the pioneers in South Tyrol's viticulture.
For almost half a century, 40 independent small winegrowers from about 45 hectares have also been supplying the Tiefenbrunners with perfect grapes from "handmade vineyards". This too is hardly to be found anymore. It is hardly surprising that the electricity is generated by a small hydroelectric power station, which was built by the grandfather around 1900. As an Italian journalist, exhausted after the scramble in the mountainous vineyards and overwhelmed by all these unique impressions, with the fresh white wines and a board with bacon and cheese in the "Jausenstation" (what an understatement) in the enchanting picturesque courtyard of the castle he wrote his notes, he chose as his headline: "I am in paradise". SUPERIORE.DE
"Son Christof, a personality of rare discretion, is responsible for the elegant, delicate and never exaggerated wines, all of solid structure, expressive and always attentive to the characteristics of the grape varieties and different terroirs."Gambero Rosso
