“Irisse” Vermentino Montecucco DOC 2020 (BIO)
Bright yellow organic Vermentino with a small amount of Grechetto. The idea comes from Maurizio Castelli, who also advises the Barberani winery in Umbria. Maurizio Castelli thus creates this wonderful white from the Tuscan coast from traditional, local blends according to historical models and always harvests the grapes quite late. On the nose, a bright scent of apple, pear, flint and some exoticism. Complex and full on the palate, the rich taste is accompanied by an invigorating, fresh acidity until the long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Nuances of roses, broom and exotic fruits; round appearance with polish and well-integrated acidity, mineral saltiness and good length." Vinum
"Intense, bright golden yellow. A beautiful fan unfolds on the nose with aromas of melon, pear, wild herbs and white flowers. Enveloping and soft in the mouth, with integrated wood notes, good persistence and a juicy finish." Falstaff
"Pineapple, dried apple, hazelnut and some orange blossom on the nose. Medium-bodied with a waxy texture and fresh acidity. Ripe and flavorful." James Suckling

“Collemassari” Rosso Montecucco Riserva DOC 2018 (BIO)
Intense ruby red, persistent, fruity bouquet with notes of wild berries, violets, cloves and cinnamon as well as sweet tobacco aromas. Concentrated, fleshy, tannic, dark fruits on the palate. In the finish, the spice tones merge with a pleasant fruity note. All in all, a promising drop at a very attractive price! SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red with purple rims. Shows on the nose with aromas of juicy wild strawberries, damp dark tobacco, opens slightly on graphite. Lively on the palate, nice core of ripe cherry fruit, sturdy and with pressure on the palate, persistent." Falstaff
"This has aromas of cherries, blackberries, mushrooms, cloves, tar and tobacco. It’s medium-bodied with firm tannins. Savory and spicy with a flavorful finish." James Suckling
"The 2018 Rosso Montecucco Riserva is deep and savory in the glass; sage underbrush notes complement a mix of black cherry and plum. This fleshes across the palate with a pleasing mix of silky textures and ripe red fruits. Savory herbal notes come forward and add gravitas toward the close. The 2018 tapers off with a flourish of inner sweetness as licorice and spice slowly fade. I’m impressed by the depth here, considering the difficulties of the vintage. The Riserva is a sexy blend of 80% Sangiovese and 10% Ciliegiolo and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon." Vinous
"Rich yet succulent and open-knit, this red delivers strawberry, cherry, earth, tobacco and licorice flavors allied to a fine structure. Shows excellent balance and length." Wine Spectator

Claudio Tipa, together with his wife Maria and his sister Maria Iris, has built up a small wine empire from several branches scattered all over Tuscany, starting with the purchase of the Castello ColleMassari winery. With the winery, which is located in the northern Maremma in the Montecucco DOC between Montalcino and the vineyards of Morellino di Scansano, about 320 meters above sea level, the family not only fulfilled a long-cherished dream, but the new owners also meant a noticeable upgrading of the growing zone, which is excellently suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese.
Claudio Tipa, Sicilian by birth and president of the Consorzio Montecucco, has granted the Tuscan parade variety, which has emerged from selections in cooperation with the University of Pisa, a lion's share of about 80 percent among the red grapes in the vineyards. Vermentino has a similar importance among the white grape varieties. Until today ColleMassari has gained an excellent reputation also beyond the borders of the Maremma. So, it is no surprise that the wine guide Gambero Rosso has chosen the exemplary producer site as "wine estate of the year" in 2014.
After acquiring the estate, the passionate owners not only purchased additional land, but also undertook a complete restructuring of the business. The vineyards and the cellar were thoroughly modernized with considerable financial means. The estate is located in an area characterized by a particularly favorable microclimate with good ventilation and strong temperature fluctuations. The steep vineyards are cultivated according to the traditional methods of the cordon or double Guyot system. From the beginning, the winery has worked according to the principles of certified organic viticulture.
In the imposing cellar, the grapes and must are processed on four levels without pumps or other mechanical aids. The top cuvées are fermented in 1,000-liter conical wooden vats and only processed manually. All other wines complete the fermentation process in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Not least due to optimal conditions in the plots and in the cellar, the Tipa family's wines, which radiate a lot of personality, have continuously gained in quality. Most recently, the Riserve of the Montecucco Sangiovese Lombrone and the Montecucco Rosso ColleMassari were often among the most outstanding wines. Today, ColleMassari Spa includes, besides ColleMassari, the estates Grattamacco in the Bolgheri area and Poggio di Sotto in Montalcino. These also occupy top positions in their respective regions.
