• "San Niccolo" Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC 2013

“San Niccolo” Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC 2013

Seductive Vin Santo from the traditional white grape varieties of Chianti Classico. A sensational drop that touches the senses and makes us revel in silence. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich and smooth, this dessert wine is balanced by tangy acidity and expresses honey, apple tart and nutty flavors. Lively and persistent." Wine Spectator

"The 2013 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico S. Niccolo has an earthy quality that recalls wild Porcino mushroom or tilled earth. There is plenty of candied fruit as well with honey and caramel spread over a thick, sweet finish. The wine ages in chestnut wood caratelli (very small barrels) for five long years. Production is only 3,500 bottles." Robert Parker

    • Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

      Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

Enormously elegant, very full of character Riserva: fascinating bouquet, intense and enveloping. On the palate great fruit, fine tannin, vital acidity, long lasting, overall slim and in harmony hardly to be surpassed. SUPERIORE.DE

"A ripe and plummy Chianti Classico that shows a lot of blackberry pastille, in addition to vanilla and spice box. Round and chewy on the palate with plenty of dark fruit and a concentrated finish." James Suckling

"Rich and dry, featuring cherry, iron and sanguine notes, focused by vivid acidity. The tannins are firm and chalky, the finish long and juicy. Balanced overall." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is beguiling and wonderfully nuanced. Lavender, mint, sage, tobacco, spice, leather and dark red/bluish fruits shape the wine with tons of complexity as well as character. This mid-weight, super-classic Riserva captures the Castellare style beautifully. Most importantly, the 2016 offers tremendous value. In fact, as seen through lens of quality for the money, the Riserva is THE wine to buy in this range." Vinous

    • "Il Poggiale" Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

“Il Poggiale” Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2016

Vigna Poggiale, a full-bodied Riserva from the individual vineyard of the same name, is an extroverted class drop. Dark fruits, flowers, smoke and liquorice in the complex, differentiated bouquet. The juicy taste, interwoven with silky tannin, is admirably harmonious. SUPERIORE.DE

"A bright, elegant version, this is packed with juicy cherry, strawberry, floral and earth flavors. Though this ends with dry tannins, the succulence persists, along with an element of sweet fruit." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is a dense, powerful wine. Next to the straight Riserva, the Poggiale has more mid-palate depth and overall richness, but it is not more complex or nuanced, just a bigger wine. Red cherry jam, leather, smoke, sweet oak and licorice meld into the unctuous finish." Vinous

"This has a really intense and beautiful nose of pressed violets, lavender, bay leaf, heather and dried hibiscus tea. Full-bodied and big with a wallop of very chewy tannins that remain in tune, thanks to bright acidity. Long on the finish." James Suckling

    • "Coniale" Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2013

“Coniale” Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2013

Coniale, a pure Cabernet Sauvignon, is an elegant and expressive wine. A pleasant scent of black fruits, spices and tobacco, dense and wide on the palate, with mineral tones of flint and granite, firmly structured and well defined until the long aftertaste. SUPERIORE.DE

"This red is smooth, if a bit shy in aroma, but makes up for it with concentrated flavors of blackberry, black cherry, earth and tar. Balanced and long, with firm grip on the finish. Begs for a grilled steak." Wine Spectator

"One of the highlights in this range, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Coniale is absolutely gorgeous. Deep, juicy and pliant, but with plenty of restraint, the 2013 is all class. There is plenty of varietal character, not to mention terrific balance, in this beautifully delineated, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon from Castellare." Antonio Galloni

"This is an impressive effort and a wine that will warm your palate and your soul on a chilly winter evening (preferably served with a grilled steak). The 2013 Coniale is a pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that opens to an inky dark and impenetrable appearance. This is a seductive wine with an irresistible array of plump cherry and super ripe blackberry flavors. It is structured and determined, but the 2013 vintage also delivers a soothing sense of balance, power and elegance. Give the wine another year or two of bottle aging." Robert Parker

    • "I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana IGT 2014

“I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana IGT 2014

Sodi di San Niccolò - cuvée from Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera - has long had cult status. The intense, mature bouquet is prelude to a soft, complex taste with long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shining Ruby. Fine nose with notes of pomegranate, fresh cherries and blood oranges. Round and smooth in the attack and course, shows a lot of juicy fruit, opens with fine-meshed tannin, very elegant, long reverberation of crunchy, ripe cherries." Falstaff

"On the lean side, yet ripe and complex, with tart cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, mineral and underbrush flavors. The innate power sneaks up on you, and this finishes with crisp acidity and firm tannins. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera. Best from 2020 through 2035." Wine Spectator

"Dark, brooding, thick and profound, the 2014 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is one of those wines that pushes the quality limits of Sangiovese. The blend here is 85% Sangioveto (an antique name for Sangiovese) with 15% Malvasia Nera. The wine is aged in barrique for 30 months. The bouquet shows black fruit aromas with elaborate spice, toasted nut, cured leather, licorice and crushed stone or granite. The purity of those aromas is profound and impressive. What I appreciate most about this wine is that it delivers this rare level of quality in what was not an easy vintage." Robert Parker

"The flagship I Sodi di San Niccolò is fabulous in 2014. Like so many wines in this vintage, I Sodi is going to need time in bottle to be at its best given the naturally nervous, sinewy style of the year. Even so, there is quite a bit of depth and persistence in the glass. I would prefer to cellar the 2014 for at least a few years." Antonio Galloni

    • "Poggio ai Merli" Merlot Toscana IGT 2012

“Poggio ai Merli” Merlot Toscana IGT 2012

Poggio ai Merli is a Merlot of pure variety, which is entirely based on the terroir of Chianti Classico, consistently embodying the Castellare style. Pure, clear, refined, elegant and free of fashionable monotony. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very constructed, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit. Chewy. Full body, with plenty going on and a long finish." James Suckling

"The 2012 Poggio Ai Merli is a pure expression of Merlot that opens to a huge sense of opulence and roundness, as only the best Merlots can do. This is a seamless expression that is beaming with cherry and blackberry backed by soft spice, tobacco and leather. I loved the textural richness and the way it so softly caresses the palate. If you are a fan of Merlot, this is one of the best from Italy. It’s set for either near-term or long-term consumption." Robert Parker

"A real stunner, the 2012 Poggio ai Merli (Merlot) shows just how compelling this vintage can be. Raspberry jam, wild flowers, tobacco, mocha, sage and new leather are just some of the many notes that race out of the glass in a wine that takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. The 2012 finishes with notable intensity, and a combination of power and silkiness that is remarkable. Readers who have an opportunity to taste the 2012 should not hesitate, as it is fabulous. This is one of the best vintage of Poggio ai Merli I can remember tasting." Antonio Galloni

    • "I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana IGT 2015

“I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana IGT 2015

The 2015 edition of I Sodi di San Niccolò offers enormous depth, power and intensity. The richness of the vintage is reflected in the sweet fruit and glycerine of the wine, accompanied by firm tannins and the influence of Malvasia Nera, which gives the wine its proportions. Deep, dark and dense on the palate, flanked by a multitude of floral and spicy notes. 2015 is a vintage year that offers more than enough of everything to give this wine the complexity and depth of a real fly-over after a few more years of bottle ageing. SUPERIORE.DE

"Not flashy, yet broad and deep, this red is anchored by a beam of black cherry at center stage, with accents of earth, leather, iron and tobacco. Muscular on the back end, yet remains long, if a bit dry." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is another beautiful new release from Castellare di Castellina. This is a seamlessly executed expression of Sangioveto (an antique name for Sangiovese) with a smaller part Malvasia Nera from a sunny vintage that produced generous and exuberant fruit across the board. White pepper, spice, wild rose and toasted anise seed appear on the close. The finish is soft and yielding with sweet tannins. Present this gorgeous red alongside a roasted pheasant." Robert Parker

"Explosive fruit on the nose with dark cherries and plums, but there are also lots of fresh fragrances here, including spearmint, eucalyptus, forest floor and boysenberries. The palate is very pure and focused, the driven acidity providing a welcome counterpoint to the layers of rich, dark fruit." James Suckling

"The 2015 I Sodi di San Niccolò is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine's natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and licorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning!" Vinous

Poggio ai Merli is a pure Merlot, which is completely based on the terroir of central Tuscany and consistently embodies the style of Castellare. Pure, clear, refined, elegant and free of fashionable monotony. SUPERIORE.DE

"A fresh and fruity wine with dark chocolate and hints of walnut. Medium to full body, bright fruit and a crisp finish. An extremely bright and focused young red." James Suckling

"Polished and harmonious, this red delivers blackberry, plum, cedar, spice and earth flavors. The tannins are exposed on the finish. Just needs time to mellow. Merlot. Best from 2019 through 2032." Wine Spectator

"Tuscany and Merlot make for beautifully matched bedfellows—especially in a reasonably balanced vintage like this. The 2015 Poggio ai Merli reveals a thickly darkened and saturated appearance with inky and blackish purple highlights. The bouquet is surprisingly delicate and perfumed with dark rose, spice, dried cherry and blackberry. In the mouth, this wine is exceedingly soft and luscious. The tannins are soft but the wine offers thick textural layering nonetheless. A mere 3,500 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

Poggio ai Merli is a Merlot of pure variety, which is entirely based on the terroir of central Tuscany, consistently embodying the Castellare style. Pure, clear, refined, elegant and free of fashionable monotony. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Poggio ai Merli, the estate's pure Merlot, is a bold, delicious wine. There is plenty of varietal character in the glass, but with a good kick of freshness from the moderate growing season and the Tuscan accents that are such signatures of this wine. Menthol, lavender, sage and pine add layers of nuance to a core of dark fruit in this very pretty and expressive wine from Castellare." Antonio Galloni

"Sweet vanilla and oak notes mingle with pretty black cherry, plum and blackberry fruit in this racy red. Deep and complex, picking up mineral and spice accents on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"This shows really pure aromas in the essence-like zone such as soaked blueberries and blackberry crumble. More floral elements of pressed violets and lavender follow. Hints of vanilla, too. Full body, very polished tannins, loads of blue fruit and a long, intense finish. Very well done indeed." James Suckling

"The 2016 Poggio ai Merli is gorgeous. That's the short and the long of it. Merlot shows some of its best performances ever in Tuscany in the 2016 vintage. This wine is exceedingly smooth and silky, yet its tightly knit fiber supports a generous profile that ranges from dark cherry to spice, to tobacco and fresh potting soil. On the palate, the wine is rich and large in scope, yet it never leaves behind any residual heaviness. Castellare di Castellina has created a true beauty (with only 4,000 precious bottles made)." About the winemakers
    Castellare di Castellina
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Castellare di Castellina

Like many Tuscan wineries, Castellare di Castellina is picturesquely surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. The Milanese publisher Paolo Panerai had acquired the feudal estate in the 1970s out of a passion for the Chianti region. With great care, attention to detail and high quality awareness, he led the production site to the top of Tuscany.

Among the award-winning wines I Sodi di San Niccolò stands out. The medieval church of San Niccolò also stands on the vineyard. The real treasure of the small church lies deep under the altar. Because in the cellars of the church the wines of Castellare di Castellina are stored. An elliptical ramp leads to the wine cellar, where the wooden barrels are stylishly illuminated.

However, quality does not come from the lowest floor, but from the vineyard itself. That's why Paolo early on opted for a very old Sangiovese clone, the Sangioveto, as well as other autochthonous varieties. The vines are planted at an altitude of up to 400 metres above sea level in very calcareous soils. The slopes are often very steep, so that in the vineyards a lot of work has to be done by hand. The location and the quality of the soil give the wines of Castellare di Castellina, full of character, a beautiful structure and a high ageing potential. Alessandro Cellai is responsible for vinification. The respected oenologist succeeds in producing traditional Chianti with modern methods.

Panerai began dealing with sustainability at an early stage. The owner of the vineyard established a small nature reserve on his property in which chemical pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides are taboo. Today, for example, rare bird species live in the biotope. The labels of the vintage wines therefore regularly show a bird species. SUPERIORE.DE

"Already at the first bottlings of the I Sodi di San Niccolò in 1979, the winery gave preference to a classic style over fashion-oriented adventures. A style that also determines the current production and makes the brand a model for the whole area."Gambero Rosso
