• "Rosé di Morgante" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2020

“Rosé di Morgante” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2020

Delicate salmon pink. Fragrant notes of citrus, rose petals and strawberries on the nose. In the mouth, it has a beautiful minerality, a crispness and freshness. A good dose of acidity and above all its very low residual sugar predestine it to be a characterful and racy companion to light fish and vegetable dishes. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2020 Rosé di Morgante is peachy and floral with sweet spices and a hint of fresh mint. This Nero d'Avola Rosato impresses further with an energetic display on the palate that mixes ripe orchard fruits with zesty acids and salty mineral tones. A bit more length would win this another point in my corner; that said, it's hard to complain following the mouthwatering and cool-toned finale." Vinous

"A pretty pink color and a lovely nose of strawberries and raspberries. Medium-bodied with a super-clean, fruity palate. Hint of almond cream at the end." James Suckling

    • "Bianco di Morgante" da uve nere 2020

“Bianco di Morgante” da uve nere 2020

Bianco di Morgante is a pure Nero d'Avola. The typical Sicilian red grape, however, was vinified without contact with the skins, resulting in this very successful and exceptionally finessed white wine. Silky and shiny, this experimental wine captivates with balance, freshness and lightness. SUPERIORE.DE

"A rich and spicy display of dried apple and nectarine is offset by honeyed florals as the 2020 Bianco di Morgante opens up in the glass. This is soft in feel, with juicy acids and notes of zesty citrus that keep the energy high throughout. Young peach, mango and salty minerals linger as the Bianco di Morgante tapers off with cheek-puckering freshness. Very nice." Vinous

    • Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2018

      Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2018

Dark, concentrated Nero d'Avola with a rich bouquet, inviting, intense raspberry fruit and sweet tannin. A full-bodied red with nice spice and a great value. SUPERIORE.DE

"Wild peppery herbs and flowers waft up from the 2018 Nero d'Avola. This impresses with a soothing display of ripe black fruits, enlivened by vibrant acidity. Purple-tinged inner florals form toward the close. Salty mineral tones, blackberries and hints of sour citrus linger long as this tapers off with a bitter twang. The 2018 is harmonious and very easy to like. It may not be a wine for the cellar, but it will certainly win a lot of hearts right out of the gate." Vinous

    • "Don Antonio" Nero d'Avola Riserva Sicilia DOC 2016

“Don Antonio” Nero d’Avola Riserva Sicilia DOC 2016

Don Antonio Riserva is the best selection from the Morgante vineyards, where only Nero d'Avola grows. Concentrated and hauntingaromas, very typical of the variety, ripe fruit accompanied by mineral and balsamic notes. Lively and elegant on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Behold the venerable Don Antonio, one of the first wines to put Nero d'Avola on the world map of native grapes. On the label of the 2016 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio, you'll notice that this wine is now identified as a Riserva, making use of the newly expanded appellation laws of the Sicilia DOC. This is a beautiful medium to full-bodied wine with the type of extraction and thickness that we remember from vintages past and the typical characteristics of the grape. Black fruit and Morello cherry is followed by black olive, grilled fennel, scorched earth and toasted pistachio with bitter chocolate. The aromas are all Sicily." Robert Parker

“Don Antonio” Nero d’Avola Riserva Sicilia DOC 2015

Don Antonio is the best selection from the Morgante vineyards, where only Nero d'Avola grows. Concentrated and hauntingaromas, very typical of the variety, ripe fruit accompanied by mineral and balsamic notes. Lively and elegant on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE

"This elegant, medium- to full-bodied version wraps fine, chalky tannins in a concentrated range of black cherry coulis, fig cake, graphite and star anise flavors. Long and sleek on the finish, with fragrant herb and mineral notes." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio delivers an explosive bouquet that is comprised of equal parts dark fruit, spice and savory tobacco. This wine sees 20 days of fermentation on the skins and finishes up with malolactic fermentation in steel vats. It then ages in French barrique for 12 months. It's a standard winemaking approach for an exceptional expression of Sicily's most important red grape. This is a medium to full-bodied red with ample texture and roundness on the finish. Do you feel that 15% alcohol?" Robert Parker

"The 2015 Nero d'Avola Riserva Don Antonio is dark and brooding with a rich display of plum sauce, lavender, clove, hints of brown sugar and tobacco. Here I'm finding soft textures matched by depths of ripe black fruit that flesh out across the palate, leaving a tactile coating of minerals and grippy tannin in their wake. This is persistent and primary but also youthfully structured, just begging for a few years of cellaring to fully come together. With all of the intensity found within, you could almost convince yourself that the 2015 Don Antonio is ready to drink today, but the best is truly yet to come." Vinous

"Carmelo Morgante makes a fine Nero d'Avola. The 2013 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Don Antonio is one of his best creations so far. The wine is dark and impenetrable and loaded tight with bold fruit intensity. It shows a careful measure of heft and power that leaves a deep impression but that does't feel too heavy or thick. Despite its big bones, the wine maintains its grace and elegance. Deep concentration - driven by oak flavors of spice and chocolate - push the wine forward over the palate." Robert Parker

“Don Antonio” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2012

A classic from the centre of the island: Don Antonio 2012 is characterised by its full berry fruit aroma and notes of spicy herbs and flowers. Full-bodied and smooth with a lot of character and a beautiful long forest fruit finish. Surprises with its elegance despite all its structure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Finely meshed and harmonious, with a skein of spice unraveling through the plumped cherry, smoke, mocha and herbes de Provence flavors. The lightly chewy tannins are supple on the juicy finish." Wine Spectator

"Boldly structured, this brawny wine opens with aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, exotic spice and a whiff of toasted oak. The generous, chewy palate offers fleshy black cherry, raspberry, licorice, cinnamon and cocoa alongside velvety tannins. You'll also detect the warmth of alcohol but the dense fruit richness easily supports it." Wine Enthusiast

"Previously an IGT wine, Morgante's Don Antonio is now a Sicilia DOC. The 2012 Sicilia Nero d'Avola Don Antonio offers one of the most beautiful and complete portraits of this promising indigenous grape from southern Italy. This is an elaborate wine with a strong oak imprint that has done much to soften and smooth out any of the grape's rough edges. The bouquet reveals dark fruit, spice, tobacco and wet earth or terra-cotta. The wine's concentration is bold and richly layered." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersMorganteSicily
    Morgante

The Morgante family had been involved in viticulture for four generations when, in the 1990s, they decided to vinify their own grapes in the deep south of Sicily. Located in the sun-drenched hills of the province of Agrigento, close to the town of Grotte, just over 20 kilometres from the famous Valley of the Temples, the winery has undergone a major transformation since the end of its long history of selling bulk cask wines. The owners have therefore decided to use Nero d'Azur, an ancient indigenous grape variety, without exception in their production.'Avola. The new direction has been accompanied by the pursuit of growth and the highest quality, and the classic family business led by Antonio Morgante has quickly become one of the best and best-known red wine producers on the island.

Working together at Morgante is based on respect, team spirit and trust. Values and characteristics such as passion, enthusiasm, expertise and social responsibility determine the company strategy after the complete restructuring. Nature conservation and the preservation of biodiversity are also very important. The entire production process is characterised by the careful handling of scarce ecological resources. In order to give even more impetus to their own high standards and the potential of the terroir, the winegrowing family engaged the star oenologist Riccardo Cotarella as cellar technology consultant in 1997. At about the same time Antonio's sons Carmelo and Giovanni had taken up work on the estate. Since then, the manufacturing processes have been continuously improved.

The Morgante winery, which has grown to a total area of around 200 hectares to date, has widely scattered and sometimes very old vines that grow on slopes between 350 and 550 metres high. The Mediterranean climate with low precipitation, hot days and cool nights, as well as the calcareous and clayey soils offer the Nero d'Avola best growing conditions.

The Morgante Winery regularly cultivates and interprets its precious grape treasure, which has not been increased by acquisitions, with very good results. For this reason, the Weinhaus has been awarded high ratings by international wine critics for many years. Above all, the great elegant red wines of the Sicilian winery, pressed from the pure Sicilian noble vine and sensitively matured in new barriques, are highly appreciated by experts. The latest hussar piece of the winery is the Bianco di Morgante - a white pressed Nero d'Avola. SUPERIORE.DE
