Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2021
Ruby red with garnet reflections. Bright, fresh nose of wild cherries, potting soil and blue flowers. Compact, medium-full body with a fresh acid wire and well-integrated tannins. A parade Sangiovese, which does not only cause enthusiasm because of its very attractive price. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Rosso di Montalcino 2021 opens slowly in the glass, exuding spicy herbal notes, wild strawberries and cedar spice. The palate is pleasantly soft and round, with a pleasing inner sweetness and crisp red and black fruits that cascade. Vibrant acidity and acidic citrus notes provide harmony on the long and spicy final, while the 2021 frames the experience perfectly with nuanced tannins. This beautiful Rosso from Ciacci Piccolomini will win many hearts." Vinous
"This show notes of sweeter red berries like raspberries and strawberries with spice character and hints of citrus peel and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, firm and textured with chalky tannins and a core of ripe fruit. Attractive and flavorful." James Suckling
"Rich ruby red. In the nose Amarena cherry, rose petal, followed by blackberry and liquorice. Lively on the palate, with a clear fruit core, floral notes, firm tannin, fruity again on the final, rich pressure." Falstaff

“Rossofonte” Rosso di Montalcino DOC 2020
Rossofonte impressively closes the gap between Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello. Only 6,000 bottles are produced from this selection from the best Rosso sites of the winery at about 300 m above sea level. Fruity aromas of ripe berries with balsamic notes on the nose, plus some brown spices, tobacco and wet rock. Overall, a multi-layered potpourri full of harmony flows from the glass, on the palate it is very balanced, velvety-soft and the cooling acidity caresses the dark berries, rounded off by dried citrus fruits and a hint of mocha. The spicy and very elegant finish is reminiscent of star anise and pink pepper. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle caramel to the very ripe and savory berry fruit and oranges. Quite flavorful on the palate with firm tannins, fresh medium acidity and a spiced, medium-long finish." James Suckling
"This is an excellent wine (at an affordable price) that you can always rely on when planning an informal dinner with family and friends. The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2020 Rosso di Montalcino Rossofonte is bright and lively with lovely cherry fruit, raspberry and redcurrant. The flavours are vibrant and bright, and the wine offers good textural tension." Wine Advocate
"The Rosso di Montalcino Rossofonte 2020 is dark, floral, gloomy and captivating. It seduces with aromas of dried black cherries, cedar, exotic spices and a hint of cocoa. On the palate, it shows pure elegance with a silky texture that introduces waves of ripe red and black fruits balanced by a core of mineral acidity. The 2020 finishes with a bitter hint of sour wild berries and liquorice and finishes with medium length. This is a more immediate style for Rossofonte, but one that I find very attractive." Vinous
"Bright ruby red. The nose shows aromas of raspberries and currants with notes of plums, herbs, earth and dried flowers. In the mouth elegant, fruity, spicy and very long, great Rosso di Montalcino." Falstaff

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2017
Ciacci's Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a very fine and elegant wine. It offers a very pleasing sense of balance, with no one characteristic overpowering the other. The dark ruby red gives the wine an open and inviting personality. On the nose, a subtle mix of aromas of wild berries, blueberries, undergrowth and toasted almonds. The mouthfeel is lean, but also polished and silky persistent. Can mature, but is also a pleasure when young. SUPERIORE.DE
"Enticing nose with notes of stone fruit and caramel, also herbs; juicy in the mouth, the tannins spot-on, the acidity vif, the supple final well balanced. Convinces with power and freshness." Vinum
"Delightfully subtle bouquet with wild berries, tobacco, plum, blackberry and blood orange peel. A typical 2017 of the very successful kind. Seductive, stylish yet with depth, fine balsamic spice and mineral notes, plus sweet tobacco with smoky nuances; the supple richness is enormously juicy and on the spicy final it scores with its subtle and refined style." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby red. In the nose of blood oranges, rose hips, mint, also eucalyptus, in the aftertaste fine Mediterranean herbs. The palate is polished and elegant, with the finest melting, high drinking fluency with pithy tannins, very well done." Falstaff
"Aromas of cedar, berry, mushroom and burnt orange follow through to a full body with medium, chewy tannins and a fluid, flavorful finish. Not overdone. Drink after 2023." James Suckling
"Generous, layered and rich, the Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows the generous fruit and deep layering that identifies this vintage. This edition shows a bright note of sweet cherry that features strongly both on the bouquet and the palate. The wine shows lots of soft fruit with almond, spice and wild rose. From a hot and dry vintage, this Brunello is probably best suited to a near or medium-term drinking window." Wine Advocate
"Rich and lively, exuding cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, with accents of earth and underbrush. Harmonious and accessible now, with fine length and a lingering, mineral-tinged finish." Wine Spectator
"Even in troubled vintages highlights the great craftsmanship of home. Nice fruit tension to the nose, blackcurrant, salty touches of caper, then laurel and nutmeg. The mouthfeel has density and tension, sapid tannins and a fruity finish." Luca Gardini
"This delicious, bold red offers inviting aromas of fragrant blue flowers, spiced plum, forest floor and pipe tobacco. Full and enveloping in feel, it delivers a great depth of juicy black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and baking spice flavors framed in velvety tannins." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2018
In the classic Brunello vintage, the 2018 edition is a fine example of the Ciacci style. Opulent, deep bouquet of small red berries, plus multi-layered hints of crushed flowers, tobacco and cherry pits. Very resonant and expressive on the palate, the fine tannins and a well-dosed acidity lead into a soft, very open finish. All in all, we are impressed by the beautiful harmony and balance, which is already a great pleasure to drink at a young age. SUPERIORE.DE
"Smells seductively of raspberries and flowers; compact texture, the tannins supple and of excellent quality, the acidity provides the vitality, the final promising and of great length, but should still mature." Vinum
"With a crisp, beguiling bouquet, red currants, cranberries and tobacco, behind it also delicately herbaceous-ethereal nuances such as eucalyptus and laurel. Very juicy and finesse-rich, full of crackling tension and yet so seductive, stylish and punchy. In the spicy final it scores with its subtle and refined nature." Weinwisser
"Bright ruby red with a sparkling core. In the nose fine fruit, of wild strawberries, blood oranges, rose hips, underlaid with a fine floral scent and liquorice. Radiant on the palate with a hearty, creamy fruit core, spreads beautifully across the tongue, spreads supreme drinking pleasure!" Falstaff
Dark and brooding, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino takes its time to give off hints of mocha before opening with a blend of dried red fruits, cloves and rosemary. The wine is surprisingly pure and elegant as ripe red and black fruits pour over a core of vibrant acidity. The 2018 leaves a lingering tension on the palate as fine-grained tannins penetrate deeply and hints of tart wild berries and a touch of cocoa slowly fade." Vinous
"Dense and brooding, with aromas of plums, cherries, earth, menthol and tobacco. On the austere side today, with buried fruit and dominant tannins, but this has fine balance and extended length." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino produces beautiful results if you choose to drink it now, or if you cellar it a little longer. It offers immediate intensity and complexity with a red and purple berry fruit attack that follows tarry spices, campfire ash, liquorice and rusty nails. These savoy tones are balanced with the wine's elegant, medium-weight finish. And the tannins are seamlessly integrated. The winemaking team has done a good job in a difficult vintage." Wine Advocate
"Roasted herbs, walnuts, olives, dried cherries and balsamic on the nose with hints of leather and sage. It is full-bodied with firm, finely meshed tannins. Creamy and very well integrated, with depth and class. Try it after 2024." James Suckling
The "base" of the Ciacci Piccolomini house, another excellence of this winery. Great tension on the nose, red currant, nuances of laurel and eucalyptus. Juiciness and tension on the palate, iodine-rich tannins, fruity-balsamic finish." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2017
Piccolomini's single-vineyard Brunello Vigna di Pianrosso 2017 comes from a south-western site of the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone at an altitude of about 300 metres. It is beautiful and delicate from the start and spontaneously impresses with its vitality, depth and balance. Compared to the basic Brunello, the wine matures for another year in oak barrels and you can feel the added spice on the nose. Rich spices, leather and tar are followed by dark fruits, plum, blackberry and cassis. The finish is graceful and silky, its length is impressive. SUPERIORE.DE
"Ripening, quite dark red; ripe fruit notes, dried figs, appealing; round approach, fullness, fruit ripeness, juicy, long, pleasant tartness, pleasing." Merum
"Seductive fruity nose with notes of wild flowers and spices, spiced up with notes of maquis and tobacco; polished on the palate, the tightly woven tannin and accentuated acidity in perfect balance, the finish exceedingly elegant and long as an oak. Superbly made and with potential." Vinum
"The CruWein has one more gear than the Annata. Multifaceted bouquet with wonderfully fresh ethereal notes, earthy hints as well as refined grilled aromas that remind us a little of red peppers, behind which leathery and herbaceous as well as floral nuances emerge, reminiscent of rose petals and violets. Finesse-rich palate with fresh, juicy fruit expression at the core, skilfully framed by fine polished tannin, wonderfully fresh and gripping, elegant style, with dark, ethereal spicy notes on the long final. Bravo!" Weinwisser
"Brightening, sparkling garnet red. Opens with emphatically fragrant notes, of fresh dark cherries, some rosehip, fine rose petals, amazingly fresh notes. Round and supple on the attack, opens with beautifully ripened fruit notes, grippy tannin, very well placed." Falstaff
"A nuanced, delicate bouquet of dried strawberries, roses, hints of sweet spice and crushed rocks lifts up from the charming 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso. This is remarkably lifted, yet juicy and energetic, as ripe red berries and minerals cascade across the palate. It leaves a coating of violet-tinged florals, along with persistent raspberry and cherry tones. The tannin management here is absolutely stunning, as the Pianrosso finishes structured yet vividly fresh." Vinous
"This is a beautifully crafted and polished Brunello for this vintage, with full body and creamy, lightly chewy tannins. Dark berries, walnuts and cedar with dried-flower undertones. Needs time to soften, but very pretty. Drink after 2024." James Suckling
"The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso shows nice balance and elegance, and it definitely shows the deft hand of the winemaking team in what was not an easy vintage by any stretch. This pretty wine delivers lots of fresh cherry and wild rose, with ferrous earthy, licorice and grilled herb; I also get bay leaf and rosemary sprig. Like the annata 2017 Brunello produced by this estate, the single-vineyard Brunello Pianrosso is distinguished by a sweet cherry note that accompanies the wine from start to finish." Wine Advocate

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2018
Pianrosso comes from a south-western site of the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone at an altitude of about 300 m with mainly Galestro soils. It opens the pleasure cinema with a rich, sparkling garnet red. The bouquet is seductive and deep with hints of dark and black fruits, sage, rose petals and violets. On the palate, there is a distinct salty-fresh minerality, which soon enters into a wonderful harmony with the fine-grained tannins and the perfectly layered fruit, leading the wine powerfully with optimal balance into a soft, hardly ending finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant wine that smells of berries, leather and tobacco; the tannins finely chiselled yet long-lasting, the acidity well integrated, the finish seductively long on notes of ripe forest fruits and balsamic notes. Of Burgundian elegance." Vinum
"The Cru wine is a selection of the best vines and is also one of the best Brunelli this year. The wines benefit from well-draining Galestro soils. Immensely complex and multi-faceted, it beguiles with redcurrants, fresh ethereal spicy notes reminiscent of Mediterranean herbs, plus mineral-salty hints as well as floral nuances (rose petals, violet blossoms). Finesse-rich palate with fresh, juicy fruit, very cleverly arranged, skilfully framed by fine polished, noble tannin, very elegant style, with ethereal spicy notes on the long final." Weinwisser
"Sparkling, medium dense ruby garnet. Finely marked nose with notes of wild raspberries, ripe, small plums, some cardamom and rose petals. Round and supple on the attack, showing plenty of sweet melt, lots of raspberry, opens up on the back end with fine meshed, slightly grippy tannin, savoury, slight bitterness on the final." Falstaff
Both 2018 wines from Ciacci Piccolomini offer a "deliciousness" of flavour and a true Umami quality, but the Pianrosso selection offers greater Brunello satisfaction. This not quite 12 hectare, iron-rich marl vineyard has had just enough warmth to make its southern origins clear. It has more shape, form and depth that give it staying power. Iron and salty minerals emerge against a backdrop of persimmon and hibiscus, finishing with Mediterranean herbs. The soft, sandy tannins are smooth and yielding, giving the wine a complex texture and immediate drinkability." Decanter
"The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso opens in the glass with dark aromas of crushed plums and black cherries, accompanied by notes of rosemary, spiced citrus peel and a hint of cocoa. This is a particularly racy style for Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona, with cool mineral tones and zesty acidity driving the ripe berry fruit and hints of sour citrus across the palate. Although structured, it finishes with tremendous energy and freshness, leaving a bitter hint of balsamic spice in the mouth. The 2018 may not have the power often associated with Pianrosso, but it impresses with its lively and spicy character." Vinous
"A complex red wine with dark, spicy notes of liquorice, eucalyptus and tobacco that combine with cherry and berry flavours. Juicy, with a slightly viscous texture, with wild herb and iron elements creeping in on the long finish. Power meets grace." Wine Spectator

"This wine is so complex, with citrus and herbal notes lifting the blue and red berry fruits. Thyme, sage and lavender, but also mocha and clove. Full-bodied, full of depth and intensity, with firm but seamless tannins. Develops into espresso. Balanced, powerful and very long. Taste after 2025." James Suckling
"A certainty of appellation for the Bianchini family vineyard, just a few steps from Castelnuovo dell'Abate. Very multi-faceted nose, redcurrant, then marjoram and iodine touches, like Taggiasche olives. The sip is juicy, with a fruity-officinal finish and very long reverberation." Luca Gardini

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2017 · JEROBOAM 5 liters in OWC

The Tenuta Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona was in the Middle Ages the historical "bishop's palace" Palazzo del Vescovo before Countess Eva Bernini Cerretani sold the property she had acquired in 1868 nine years later to the Francesco Ciacci family from Castelnuovo. Since Francesco's daughter Elda and Alberto Piccolomini d'Aragona, the direct descendant of Pope Pius II, had no direct successors, the estate was taken over by Giuseppe Bianchini in 1983. He made the then only a few hectares of vineyards extensive property through the purchase of a farm and other vineyards first to a winery in today's sense. In addition to the winery he designed himself, the labels on Giuseppe's wines also originate from his personal ideas. Today, Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona to the best and most distinguished enterprises among the far more than 200 Brunello producers.
Drivers will pass by the 200-hectare country estate when they take the dirt road from Castelnuovo dell'Abate to Sant'Angelo in Colle. The vines are located not far from the river Orcia, at an altitude between 240 and 360 metres, and are optimally oriented towards the south-east. They thrive on excellent Galestro soils. The grapes are processed in the Palazzo, where visitors can visit the vaulted cellar, dating back to the 17th century. The new 2,500 square metre Molinello cellar blends unobtrusively into the picturesque surroundings and serves as headquarters and wine shop. It offers generous areas for vinification, partly in wooden barrels, but also in temperature-controlled cement tanks. The finest grapes of the estate are destined for Brunello Pianrosso and Brunello Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso.
Today the family business is run by Giuseppe's children Paolo and Lucia Bianchini. Both have completed the construction of the new wine cellar begun by their late father. The siblings also take care of the plots in Montecuccio that were newly acquired a few years ago. This is where the typical Montalcino terroir finds its geological and microclimatic continuation.
