    About the regionBasilicata 

    Basilicata is dominated by the extinct volcano Monte Vulture.

    Beautiful landscape, surrounded by Campania in the north, Apulia in the east and Calabria in the west, the Basilicata is the instep of the Italian boot. The region borders in the southeast on the Gulf of Taranto, in the southwest on the Tyrrhenian Sea, thus lies deep in the south of Italy and, with a vineyard area of only about 5,000 hectares and a share of only 0.3 percent of the country's total wine production, is one of the smallest wine-growing areas. Around 16 million litres of wine are produced each year from the grapes growing here. More than 80% of it is made from Aglianico, 34% as DOP in the Italian designations DOCG Aglianico del Vulture Superiore and DOC Aglianico del Vulture.

    Basilicata presents itself to the traveller as a dramatically beautiful, sometimes bizarre landscape, dominated by the extinct volcano Monte Vulture near the northeastern capital Potenza. In Basilicata there are still traces of the Greek colonists who started settling in the region in 800 BC. The soils in the mountainous highlands consist mainly of volcanic rock and, in lower altitudes, sedimentary rock with clay, limestone and sand, through which numerous watercourses flow. All vineyards are constantly ventilated, either by the onshore winds of the coasts or by the offshore mountain winds. A rather extreme temperature fluctuation between hot days and cool nights helps to develop a wonderful fruit and elegance.

    The Barolo of the south and the cultural capital.

    The vineyards of Basilicata are fragmented into thousands, often less than one hectare, of vineyards. Most of the vineyards are located to the north at the foot of Monte Vulture and close to the enchanting town of Matera to the east, the cultural capital of 2019, which is always worth a visit. A few hectares lie along river valleys in the south and on the coast of the Ionian Sea not far from Metaponto.

    Probably wine was already cultivated here by the Phoenicians. In the sixth century, the Greeks verifiably planted the ancestor of Aglianico - a first-class grape variety that dominates Basilicata today - in the sixth century. Today, the outstanding red wine Aglianico del Vulture is produced from this wine in a DOP zone (divided into the Italian Denominations of Origin DOCG and DOC) located on the Monte Vulture volcano. At a young age, this wine is often closed and rich in tannins. But over the years it matures in the bottle to a velvety, concentrated and deep red wine. Similar to Barolo, therefore it is also called "Barolo of the South" is called. Aglianico del Vulture is one of the best products of southern Italy.
