    • "Re Manfredi" Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2015

“Re Manfredi” Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2015

Re Manfredi is a masterpiece from the autochthonous grape variety Aglianico. Its label bears the coat of arms of the ruling house of Emperor Frederick the Staufer, who was at home here. Deep ruby red, fragrant, intense and complex bouquet, rich fruit, robust structure, fine tannins and clean, pleasant bitter tones in harmony, very dense, elegant, spicy and complex with a subtle wood tone. A beautiful, characteristic red! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture achieves something that is not banal, considering the robust characteristics of this powerhouse appellation; it achieves easy elegance. This is purposely not a particularly profound or complex wine, but it is streamlined, tight and accessible with a refreshingly frank and matter-of-fact personality. The bouquet reveals aromas of candied cherry, smoke and crushed volcanic rock. The tannins are a bit dusty, but they are well integrated." Robert Parker

"Il Repertorio" - "The Register" The wines of Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti recall with their names the notarial world of his father.

Expressive and unrestrained we encounter the Aglianico Il Repertorio. Dark berries, a bouquet of herbs of mint, rosemary, thyme and sage, with tones of leather and liquorice. An extremely fascinating wine from beginning to end. Intense and delicate at the same time, elegant and rustic. SUPERIORE.DE

"Good full red. Red berries and nutty oak dominate on the lively nose. Then fresh but creamy, with very good energy and lift to the sappy red and dark berry flavors. Finishes tactile but smooth, with a much less obtrusive presence of oak than in some past vintages of Repertorio. I especially liked this wine being at once freshly juicy and seriously structured." “La Firma” Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2014

"La Firma" - "The Signature". The wines of Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti recall with their names the notarial world of his father.

La Firma, a pure Aglianico that matures in natural caves of volcanic tuff, carat and French oak barrels. Beautiful ruby red with bright purple reflections. Complex bouquet with aromas of small black berries, liquorice and hay. Powerful and very harmonious on the palate, characterized by velvety tannins and a long, balsamic finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"This wine has now adopted the new Superiore denomination. The 2014 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore La Firma is a beautifully saturated and rich wine with thick concentration, power and lasting momentum. The bouquet shows black fruit, dried blackberry, spice, mesquite, mahogany and campfire ash. The wine is muscular, bold and stacked tall with distinctive volcanic tones. Ironically, this cool-vintage expression from 2014 shows a lot more ripeness, richness and concentration than the vintage before it." Robert Parker

"Good bright red-ruby. Captivating nose combines black cherry, dark plum, camphor, mocha, and sweet spicy oak. Then very plush but lively, with very fine-grained tannins nicely supporting the rich plum and truffle flavors. Finishes long and smooth, with uncanny freshness for such a mellow, ripe wine. Probably Cantine del Notaio’s most famous and best Aglianico. This is made from relatively late harvested grapes (picked at the beginning of November)." Vinous

Dark ruby red, in the Bouquet aromas of ripe, red fruits and a fine wood spice. Elegant, soft, complex and fresh, the taste is exuberant and very flattering. A masterpiece from the Basilicata! SUPERIORE.DE

"Here's another great vintage from Elena Fucci, the ascending star of a rising wine region in the deep south of Italy. The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo shows a dark garnet color and robust appearance. Very characteristic of this extreme territory, this is a dark and penetrating wine with etched mineral notes behind blackberry, plum and savory spice. This vintage presents an even darker quality of fruit. In the mouth, you get iron, blood and dark mineral nuances that are absolutely typical of these darkened volcanic soils." Robert Parker

"Fresh and well-meshed, this is a medium- to full-bodied red, with creamy tannins and a rich note of smoke-tinged mineral underscoring the lovely range of ripe black cherry, dried thyme and fig cake flavors and hints of ground cumin and white pepper. This is round and finely balanced, with a long, lingering finish that echoes the spice and mineral detail." Wine Spectator

"Elena Fucci crafts one single wine. The piercing and focused Titolo exudes incense, violet, dark earth and black cherry. Volcanic soil translates with vibrant energy. Muscular rather than plump and built to last." Decanter

    About the region
    Basilicata

Basilicata is dominated by the extinct volcano Monte Vulture.

Beautiful landscape, surrounded by Campania in the north, Apulia in the east and Calabria in the west, the Basilicata is the instep of the Italian boot. The region borders in the southeast on the Gulf of Taranto, in the southwest on the Tyrrhenian Sea, thus lies deep in the south of Italy and, with a vineyard area of only about 5,000 hectares and a share of only 0.3 percent of the country's total wine production, is one of the smallest wine-growing areas. Around 16 million litres of wine are produced each year from the grapes growing here. More than 80% of it is made from Aglianico, 34% as DOP in the Italian designations DOCG Aglianico del Vulture Superiore and DOC Aglianico del Vulture.

Basilicata presents itself to the traveller as a dramatically beautiful, sometimes bizarre landscape, dominated by the extinct volcano Monte Vulture near the northeastern capital Potenza. In Basilicata there are still traces of the Greek colonists who started settling in the region in 800 BC. The soils in the mountainous highlands consist mainly of volcanic rock and, in lower altitudes, sedimentary rock with clay, limestone and sand, through which numerous watercourses flow. All vineyards are constantly ventilated, either by the onshore winds of the coasts or by the offshore mountain winds. A rather extreme temperature fluctuation between hot days and cool nights helps to develop a wonderful fruit and elegance.

The Barolo of the south and the cultural capital.

The vineyards of Basilicata are fragmented into thousands, often less than one hectare, of vineyards. Most of the vineyards are located to the north at the foot of Monte Vulture and close to the enchanting town of Matera to the east, the cultural capital of 2019, which is always worth a visit. A few hectares lie along river valleys in the south and on the coast of the Ionian Sea not far from Metaponto.

Probably wine was already cultivated here by the Phoenicians. In the sixth century, the Greeks verifiably planted the ancestor of Aglianico - a first-class grape variety that dominates Basilicata today - in the sixth century. Today, the outstanding red wine Aglianico del Vulture is produced from this wine in a DOP zone (divided into the Italian Denominations of Origin DOCG and DOC) located on the Monte Vulture volcano. At a young age, this wine is often closed and rich in tannins. But over the years it matures in the bottle to a velvety, concentrated and deep red wine. Similar to Barolo, therefore it is also called "Barolo of the South" is called. Aglianico del Vulture is one of the best products of southern Italy. A tiny part of it is produced as a rare spumante in Metodo Classico, which must be mentioned as a speciality. SUPERIORE.DE

"With the blossoming of the Italian wine economy since the 80s of the last century, the interest in viticulture in Basilicata has increased again, especially since Aglianico is a highly interesting grape variety beyond the mainstream."Falstaff
