Classic Bolgheri Rosso with a strong bouquet of raspberries and currants, cassis and some tobacco. Juicy, full-bodied taste, nice tannin and good acidity. Wonderful entry into the great world of Le Macchiole wines. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-bodied radiant ruby red with garnet rim. Opened with a distinctly fragrant aroma of rich heart cherries, a little floral, black pepper, clove and cold tea. Hits the palate with juicy freshness, finely meshed, tightly woven, yet finesse-rich, gripping in the drink with fine pressure and good length." Falstaff
"Le Macchiole's 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is bright, effusive and so alluring. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into a core of red/purplish berry fruit as this silky, mid-weight red shows off its undeniable charm. The interplay of Bolgheri radiance with the approach at Le Macchiole today, that seeks greater energy in the wines than in the past, is so incredibly appealing." Vinous
"Attractive perfumes of currants, berries, incense and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm, silky tannins and a bright finish. Some smoke and dark-earth undertones. A little tight at the end, but delicious already." James Suckling
"Bright blackberry, black currant and cedar flavors run into resinous oak and vanilla notes in this dense red. The core of ripe fruit lingers despite muscular tannins adding grip." Wine Spectator
"Released to much fanfare amidst growing popularity for this entry-level appellation on the Tuscan coast, the Le Macchiole 2019 Bolgheri Rosso is a beautiful specimen, thanks to its honest simplicity and its charming approach. The wine reveals good fruit complexity with blue and purple berries contrasted against toasted spice and baked earth. But if anything truly stands out here, it is the expert integration and generally seamlessness of the wine's various moving parts. This is a terrific wine to uncork for a fun family meal with pasta and grilled meats around the kitchen table." Robert Parker

“Paleo” Bianco Toscana IGT 2019
Very rare with each vintage, Paleo Bianco made from Sauvignon and Chardonnay is a great Tuscan white at the highest level. Fresh bouquet of lemon and apple, creamy texture and notes of melon and peach on the palate. Beautiful minerality and deep aromatic finesse. SUPERIORE.DE
"A blend of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, the 2019 Paleo Bianco is a lovely expression with the salty seaside tones and bright fruit that you can expect of the Tuscan Coast. The fruit focuses on white peach and honeydew melon with wild sage, crushed stone and hints of cumin and turmeric. It is streamlined and tight with a spicy finish that is delivered over a lean to mid-weight mouthfeel." Robert Parker

Paleo - unmistakable Cabernet Franc and one of Bolgheri's most important wines, full of elegance and class. The name goes back quite unspectacularly to a weed that has long since been removed from the vineyards of Le Macchiole. Rich ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, mint, white pepper, blackberry fruit and some pomegranate. Fine melting on the palate with hints of tobacco and poppy. Wonderfully structured and with a long final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Shiny, rich ruby with a slight violet shimmer. Very clear nose, shows notes of wild blueberries, fruit and spice, lots of tobacco, exciting. On the palate dense tannin, full-bodied, with fine spice." Falstaff
"Aromas of currants and fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and basil, follow through to a full body with layers of ripe tannins and a chewy finish." James Suckling
"The 2017 Paleo Rosso is superb. It is also the wine in this range that seems to have handled the rigors of 2017 best. Then again, that is the magic of Cabernet Franc on the Tuscan Coast. The aromatics alone are so alluring. Sweet pipe tobacco, mocha, dried flowers, mint, sage and cedar give Paleo its aromatic lift. Some varietal character has been baked out because of the heat of the year. In exchange, readers will find a Paleo Rosso that will drink well with just a year or two in bottle." Vinous
"The Three Graces of Le Macchiole are Messorio, Scrio and Paleo (Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, respectively). Of these three top-tier releases, my favorite is the 2017 Paleo. This is an upright and direct expression of the grape that carefully sheds some dusty or mineral aromas before opening the way for determined black fruit, charred meat, spice and cured tobacco or cigar. There is quite a bit of oak, but it works beautifully against the natural intensity and rich concentration of the hot vintage. More unexpected are those pretty tones of lilac, blue flower and aniseed that add to the detailed rendering and complexity of the bouquet. This wine won my heart." Robert Parker

"Powerful, sparkling ruby with a slight violet sheen. Opens on the nose with notes of tobacco and blackberries, plus some sandalwood. Blossoms big on the palate, lots of juicy fruit, dark cherry and mulberry, opens with dense, fine-mesh tannin, fine drinking." Falstaff
"Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, plums, chocolate and mushrooms. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and lively acidity. Round and creamy with harmony and balance. Fresh, yet focused, with chocolate and black-fruit character. Long, flavorful finish with some spices." James Suckling
"The fresh 2018 vintage enhances the well known aromatic richness of this wine where the typical dried eucalyptus note is completed by menthol, vibrant clay minerality, leather and star anise. Elegant tannins and crisp acidity complete the picture." Decanter
"Le Macchiole's 2018 Paleo Rosso is an unbelievably beautiful wine. It is also very young. The aromatics are total seduction, but otherwise the 2018 is quite reticent. Bright floral notes and red-toned fruit give the 2018 considerable energy and verve as varietal Franc aromas and flavors start to take shape over time. Readers will have to be patient. The 2018 needs at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Even so, it is pretty appealing today." Vinous
"The Le Macchiole 2018 Paleo has a spicy and tangy personality with dark fruit, bitter chocolate and tarry smoke. Coming back to my open bottle 24 hours later, I got some green olive and rosemary essence. The mouthfeel fleshes out considerably, and there is beautiful structure to hold it firmly together." Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah from Le Macchiole - is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, extracted and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pretty, subtle aromas of berries and sweet green tobacco follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins and a bright, fresh finish. Very balanced and fine." James Suckling
"The 2018 Scrio is brilliant. Fresh, translucent and so expressive, the 2018 dazzles from the very first taste. Although Scrio is Syrah, it is best described as a wine of Le Macchiole. There is not a ton of varietal character, and yet that in no way detracts from the immense pleasure the wine provides. Bright red cherry, blood orange, mint and rose petal linger. I can't wait to taste this with a bit more age." Vinous
"The 2018 Scrio is a pure expression of Syrah and one of the wines that broke the mold on this grape grown in coastal Tuscany. This is such a delicious wine and you want to bite into it, sip after sip, as if it were food. There is sweetness here, ample spice, tons of dark fruit and a long, luscious finish. I came back to the open bottle a day later and discovered Christmas spice and savory leather. This Tuscan Syrah shies away from the more prominent white pepper or smoked bacon aromas that you sometimes get from this grape, especially in New World expressions." Robert Parker

Messorio has been undisputedly one of Italy's best and rarest Merlots since the mid-1990s. Soft, rich, elegant, refined and never overdone. On the nose, ripe fruit, coffee, graphite and French oak. Structured and balanced, Messorio fascinates the international wine world every year with a clarity and length that is unparalleled. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, sparkling ruby with violet glints. Open and accessible on the nose, charming notes of dark cherries, wild raspberries and some cardamom. Shows very good tension on the palate, juicy, lots of crunchy fruit, opens with fine-meshed tannin, tobacco on the final." Falstaff
"The 2018 Messorio is an attractive wine, but it also feels like the most marked by the cooler style of the year. Readers will find a mid-weight Messorio endowed with striking inner sweetness and perfume, if not quite the textural richness that is the norm here. I have seen even the more delicate of Messorios blossom beautifully over time, and suspect that will be the case here as well. The purity of the fruit is remarkable." Vinous
"Le Macchiole's 2018 Messorio is soft and rich with impressive depth and intensity, all delivered with the softness that only the Merlot grape can manage. This important wine unfolds first to rich cherry and blackberry and then yields softly to secondary notes of spice, baker's chocolate and toasted almond. There is some youthful tightness in the mouth, with Merlot tannins that are hitched to firmness and softness, while showing impressive length all the while. The mouthfeel is most impressive, thanks to its seamless and supple nature that glides smoothly over the palate." Robert Parker
"This is very complex, offering tobacco, brown sugar, black olives and currants. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and layered, with very fine tannins and a long, structured finish. Hints of new wood complement the long, cool fruit and phenolics. Give this three or four years to open." James Suckling

Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah by Le Macchiole - is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, rich in extracts and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich ruby violet. Inviting and intense nose with pronounced notes of plums, blueberries and blood oranges. A dense tannin on the palate, with a good feel, deep, clearly earthy tones, firm pressure in the finish, lots of tobacco." Falstaff
"Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice and menthol all flesh out in a wine that possesses notable power. Today, Scrio is mostly a wine of texture and density, while varietal notes are not especially evident. The oak is also quite dominant." Antonio Galloni
"Deep and saturated in both color and fruit, with core flavors of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, this red also offers interwoven notes of earth, vanilla, licorice and black pepper. This is solidly built, yet also polished and balanced, with a long, palate-staining finish." Wine Spectator
"It's worth noting that the Scrio was not made in 2014, as Syrah did not reach the right maturity for the quality Le Macchiole looks for. The 2015 growing season wasn't much easier, with 15 days of extreme heat in July. August brought cooler weather, and so they tried to slow down the ripening process by doing very little green harvest. This vintage is marked by more pepper than fruit, but it's still a beautiful effort, and I see a lot of potential for aging this wine. The 2015 Scrio is made with a more reductive approach overall, and this vintage needs a year or two to open fully. Only 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker
"A stunning syrah; the real McCoy for the variety. The depth of aroma takes your breath away with bark, tea leaves, peppermint, dried rosemary, thyme, sage, pressed violets, cedar, creme de cassis, blackcurrants and lavender. The palate is incredibly tight and yet, profound in its delivery of flavors. Full body, layer upon layer of fruit of every color on the spectrum, pinpoint acidity and a finish that seems endless." Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah from Le Macchiole - is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, extracted and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, powerful ruby violet. Opens with notes of undergrowth and tobacco, lots of blueberry, some dried plum. Hearty and spicy on the palate, opens with grippy, firm tannin, lots of pressure on the final, long finish." Falstaff
"The 2017 Scrio, Le Macchiole's Syrah, is fabulous. As always, Scrio is more a wine of the estate than a varietal expression of Syrah. That is obvious. Even so, the wine's density, persistence and overall complexity make it compelling. Time in the glass brings out hints of cedar, smoke, sweet pipe tobacco and rose petal to play off a core of vibrant red Syrah fruit. I would give the 2017 a few years for the aromatics to develop. This is very nicely done. Sadly, the year required severe selection that reduced production by around 40%." Vinous
"The Le Macchiole 2017 Scrio is a pure expression of Syrah that shows more similarities to the variety when grown in France than it does California, Australia or even the rest of Tuscany for that matter. Instead of the peppery charred meat or barbecued aromas you often get in New World Syrah, this wine points to blackberry, some black olive, rum cake, crème de cassis or chocolate-covered cherries. Although the wine is varietally pure, it doesn't really scream Syrah in any sort of obvious or banal manner. The tannins are more gripping in this hot vintage, and the wine spreads over the palate with a creamy, almost waxy texture that is enduring and deep." Robert Parker
"Intense aromas of blackcurrants, spices and black licorice with some lavender and rosemary. It's full-bodied and layered with chewy, polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Black pepper comes through. It's tensioned and structured. Nicely proportioned." James Suckling

“Messorio” Rosso IGT 2017 · MAGNUM
Messorio has been one of Italy's best and rarest Merlots for over a decade. Soft, rich, elegant, refined and never overdone. On the nose, ripe fruit, coffee, graphite and French oak. Structured and balanced, Messorio fascinates the international wine world every year with a clarity and length that is second to none. SUPERIORE.DE
"A beam of black cherry and blackberry permeates this red, accented by wild rosemary, thyme, iron and oak spice. Beautifully balanced and graceful, this should begin to hit its stride in two to three years, once the oak is absorbed." Wine Spectator
"Messorio is a wine that beautifully reflects the characteristics of the vintage and is a very accurate measuring stick of how any single vintage will eventually perform both in terms of near-term accessibility and long-term cellar aging. That said, the Le Macchiole 2017 Messorio plays its strongest cards in terms of mouthfeel and texture, revealing a robust structure and firmly integrated tannins that come from both the richly concentrated fruit and the careful use of oak. The wine shows a heavy center of gravity and a solid base of dark fruit that is enhanced by caramel, brown sugar, spice and creamy blackberry preserves. It does offer immediate appeal, but I'd wait a few more years to give this 2017 Messorio more time to flesh out and evolve." Robert Parker
"The 2017 Messorio is classy and polished to the core. It is also incredibly young and not at all forthcoming. Messorio is a wine that needs a surprising amount of time in bottle to truly shine. I expect that will be the case here as well. Today, the 2017 is all about fruit and density. Time in the cellar should allow for its aromatics to emerge more fully. Overall, though, this is a fairly restrained style, in keeping with the showing of 2017 Bolgheri reds more broadly. All the elements come together so gracefully in this striking wine." Vinous
"This wine shows beautiful clarity and class on the nose with roses, tar, currants, green and black olives and plums. It's exceptionally fine-tannined with such polish and finesse. So sophisticated and intense for this vintage. Long, chewy finish, yet this is mouth-filling and caressing." James Suckling

From the very beginning, the modern winery Le Macchiole has been one of the top Italian producers of quality wines. As one of the first and most important winegrowers in the Bolgheri region, it has also acquired a high international reputation. Since Eugenio Campolmi died young and unexpected in 2002, the widow Cinzia Merli, who founded and built the estate together with her husband, has continued to run it with great determination and foresight. The winemaker likes to affectionately call her wines "my children". The Campolmi family has been living in the region for many years and produced fine wines from vineyards on the plain of Via Aurelia as early as the end of the 1970s.
In 1983, Eugenio Campolmi, led by a gifted intuition, began planting new slopes at the foot of the Bolgheri hills. Experiments have shown that the Cabernet Franc grape variety is particularly suitable for Le Macchiole vineyards. However, since the owner of the estate had a particular passion for Syrah, he also planted this grape variety despite rather unfavourable growing conditions. Thus the rarest wine of the house, a pure Syrah called Scrio, was produced with considerable effort and in only a small quantity. Le Macchiole's outstanding wines also include the Messorio, made exclusively from Merlot, and the Paleo Rosso, the first Italian wine made entirely from Cabernet Franc to cause a sensation. The single-varietal plants only reach the market with one year bottle ripeness. In some years it is difficult to highlight even one product from the first-class range of the Tuscan wine company. It should also be mentioned that in 1991 a meeting took place between Eugenio Campolmi and Luca d'Attoma, oenologist at the Tua Rita winery in the Maremma, has proven to be a pioneer in the quality development of Le Macchiole. Since then, the clever winemaker Cinzia Merli has been available as a consultant.
The 22 hectares of vineyards are extremely densely planted with around 10,000 vines per hectare and are cultivated organically. The grapes are very strictly selected. From the outset, the aim of the management was to ensure that the characteristics of the terroir were given the highest possible recognition in the individual subzones on their own land. The Le Macchiole winery has received numerous top ratings from wine critics to this day. For his many years of service, he was named Italy's best winery in 2009 by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS) and two years later was named Winery of the Year by the magazineWine Enthusiast.
