• Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2017

      Bolgheri Rosso DOC 2017

Classic Bolgheri Rosso with a strong bouquet of raspberries and currants, cassis and some tobacco. Juicy, full-bodied taste, beautiful tannin and good acidity. Wonderful introduction to the great world of Le Macchiole wines. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright and succulent, this red offers cherry, blueberry and blackberry flavors, accented by bell pepper, iron and tobacco notes. Turns lean on the finish, with lightly astringent tannins." Wine Spectator

"As usual, Le Macchiole has done a great job with all of its releases, including the lower-end bottles such as the 2017 Bolgheri Rosso. There is a sure sense of precision and sharpness here with bright berry and black cherry. Those aromas show quality and craftsmanship. You would do well to pair this accessible, mid-weight wine with simple pasta topped with fresh tomato sauce." Robert Parker

    • "Scrio" Rosso IGT 2012

      “Scrio” Rosso IGT 2012

Scrio, the magnificent Tuscan Syrah of Le Macchiole, is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, rich in extracts and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, dark ruby violet. The nose is sparkling clean and precise, with plenty of ripe dark berries, elderberries and blackberries, fine spice components. Dresses the mouth full, looks very juicy, then opens with fine-meshed tannin that spreads in many layers, sanded and long after tobacco." Falstaff

"The 2012 Scrio is a unique and dare I say atypical expression of Syrah. The bouquet presents big intensity with cola, balsam herb and licorice. At the back are tones of tar, Teriyaki sauce and barbecuesmoke. I don't think I have ever tasted a Syrah quite like this. It shows a level of balsam intensity that I have never previously encountered. The bouquet glows with Tuscan sunshine." Robert Parker

"The 2012 Scrio is decidedly lithe in this vintage, with gorgeous aromatics and terrific overall balance. Rose petal, white pepper, mint and red-fleshed stone fruit unfold in a mid-weight, gracious Scrio built on understated finesse." Antonio Galloni

"Shades of vanilla and whiskey cask frame the violet aromas and black cherry and raspberry fruit in this polished red. Dense, lively and balanced, with the aftertaste echoing fruit and black pepper. Has the concentration to age." Wine Spectator

    • "Messorio" Rosso IGT 2011

      “Messorio” Rosso IGT 2011

Very refined, the Merlot Messorio with its great balance and finesse. Deeply dense and full-bodied, when the tannins have relaxed in the coming years, this wine will reach a fascinating perfection. SUPERIORE.DE

"Notes of blackcurrant, leather, tea and macchia; powerful, compact and balanced on the palate, ending with aromas of blackberry confit and herbs, very fresh and surprisingly youthful overall". Vinum

"Rich, deep dark ruby with a slight blue hue. Dense, exuberant nose, rich fruit, plums, blackberries and cassis. On the palate it is polished and lardy, develops with a lot of fine-grained tannin, salty, much rich, dark berry fruit, in the aftertaste a nice play between tobacco and fruit". Falstaff

"The 2011 Messorio takes hold of all the senses and never lets up. Rich and explosive to the core, the 2011 boasts stunning intensity and depth. Today, the 2011 is painfully young and packed with tannin. Even with all of its size, the 2011 retains gorgeous aromatic complexity and tons of nuance. This is a fabulous showing from Le Macchiole." Antonio Galloni

"Amazing aromas of sexy, decadent fruit with blackberry, dark chocolate and cedar. Full body with fine tannins and a long, long finish." James Suckling

"A pure expression of Merlot, the 2011 Messorio is a gorgeous wine that is already drinking at near-optimal performance now. It will be exciting to see where five to ten more years of cellar evolution take it. Cinzia Merli and her vineyard team took care to harvest the early-ripening varietal before autumn heat spikes. In fact, the integrity of the fruit is impeccable and you don’t get any of the jammy notes that are common in this warm vintage. The bouquet is broad and approachable with intense cherry, chocolate and tobacco. Supporting aromas of cola, grilled herb and exotic spice flesh out the finish. The tannins are plump and sweet." • "Messorio" Rosso IGT 2014

      “Messorio” Rosso IGT 2014

Messorio has been one of the best and rarest Merlots in Italy for over a decade. Soft, rich, elegant, refined and never exaggerated. On the nose ripe fruits, coffee, graphite and French oak. Structured and balanced, Messorio fascinates the international wine world every year with a clarity and length that is second to none. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with a garnet edge. Opened with accentuated spicy notes of cardamom and laurel, followed by blackberry. On the palate a lot of pithy, gripping tannin, relaxes a fine carpet of spices." Falstaff

"A little lean for Messorio but plenty of tobacco, cedar and berry character. Medium body, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Needs two or three years to come together." James Suckling

"The 2014 Messorio is another very pretty and expressive wine from Le Macchiole. The 2014 has lovely mid-palate density, especially for the year, along with a decidedly exotic passion fruit/apricot quality that will only grow as the wine continues to develop in bottle. I expect the 2014 starts to drink well relatively early, but it also has enough freshness and balance to hold for a number of years. Hints of truffle, raspberry jam, blood orange and spice infuse the layered, creamy finish." Antonio Galloni

    • "Messorio" Rosso IGT 2009

      “Messorio” Rosso IGT 2009

"Bright, intense ruby violet. Wonderfully seductive nose, smells of raspberries, blackberries, behind it fine chocolate. Initially a bit timid, shows a lot of juicy berry fruit, then sets off and opens up in many layers with fine-meshed tannin, builds up for a long time, firm in the finale and with beautiful pressure." Falstaff

"Round, ripe and opulent, this landmark Merlot offers lingering tones of ripe black fruit, tobacco and spice. Oak-driven aromas are still evident at this point, so give it another 10-15 years of cellaring. Lingering smoke and spice notes add to the long finish. Messorio is one of the most complete and complex Italian interpretations of Merlot." Wine Enthusiast

"I have tasted this wine a number of times and it ranges from 97 to 98 points in my scoring. The subtlety and depth to this is amazing. Aromas of ripe fruit, chili powder, and toasted oak with hints of rosemary follow through to a full body, with very fine tannins and a long finish. Integrated and attractive now, but better in 2014." "Sparkling, intense ruby with violet shimmer. Opened with spicy notes, celery and cardamom, then blueberry. Flowers beautifully on the palate, compact and dense, with a wonderfully sweet melt, dense tannin, very long in the finish." Falstaff

"An opulent nose that shows plum cake, blueberry muffins, dark chocolate, mocha, coffee, plum liqueur and hot stones. However, there just the right amount of freshness with thyme, violets and cedar. Full body, very chewy tannins and a long, decadent finish. Very intense, but it still shows form and tension." James Suckling

"The 2015 Messorio captures the Macchiole style beautifully. Ample, creamy and voluptuous, with tremendous depth, the 2015 has it all. Raspberry jam, chocolate, new leather, licorice and dark spice all meld together effortlessly. Even at this early stage, the 2015 is simply impeccable in its balance. The new 100% new oak and the tannins are already very nicely integrated. Hints of the exoticism Messorio will ultimately develop in bottle are starting to appear, but the 2015 needs more time to be at its finest." Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Messorio is a true tribute to Merlot. It's not easy to faithfully render the distinctive characteristics of this grape, within such a tight margin of error, but the winemaking team at Le Macchiole has deftly achieved exactly that. With sourcing from the Puntone vineyard, Le Macchiole wanted to achieve less density yet more aromas of skin. The wine has a homogeneous feel, with huge generosity and fullness, and it delivers big, ripe cherry tones with so much luscious fruit and delineated persistence." Robert Parker

"Seductive, yet packs a serious punch. Blackberry, black currant, cedar, iron, coffee and vanilla flavors unravel as this builds on the palate to a long finish. All the elements are in the right place." Wine Spectator

    • "Paleo" Rosso IGT 2015
MAGNUM

“Paleo” Rosso IGT 2015 · MAGNUM

Paleo - unmistakable Cabernet Franc and one of the most important wines of Bolgheri, full of elegance and class. The name goes back quite unspectacularly to a weed that has long been removed from the vineyards of Le Macchiole. Ruby with violet reflections. In the bouquet mint, white pepper, blackberry fruit and some pomegranate. Fine melting on the palate with hints of tobacco and poppy seeds. Wonderfully structured and with a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, intense ruby with a black core. Opened with notes of smoke and tobacco, then lots of elderberry and blueberry, very clear fruit. On the palate a lot of substance, unfolds with a lot of fine-meshed, very well integrated tannin, almost silky, builds up for a long time, in the finale saturated pressure, in the finish fruit and tobacco. Falstaff

"This red is sleek and concentrated, featuring black currant, black cherry, licorice, tobacco and leather flavors. Balanced and juicy, with a long, mineral-tinged aftertaste. The firm structure will allow this to age." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Paleo Rosso is powerful, dense and super-concentrated, with all of the richness of the vintage very much on display. The 2015 is going to need time in bottle to develop the full breadth of its aromatics. Today, it is dense, powerful and very closed. Even so, there is terrific persistence and follow through. All the 2015 needs is time to unwind." Antonio Galloni

"There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible." Robert Parker

" There are so much essence-like fruits on the nose of this Bolgheri Rosso, from blackberry perfume and dark-cherry compote to fresher elements of rosemary, lavender, hot stones and citrus. Full body with generous fruit, but the firm and beautifully woven tannin backbone keeps the palate fine and elegant. Very long on the finish." James Suckling

"Fleshy, intense ruby violet. Opened with much appealing, sweet fruit, after pickled raspberries, blueberries, behind it nice cardamom notes. Clear and straight on the palate, a lot of juicy fruit, especially blueberry, opens with fine-meshed tannin, builds up for a long time, in the finale long sweet enamel." Falstaff

"The 2013 Scrio is an opulent, generous and engaging wine. Itreveals an all-Syrah personality with ample layers of dark fruit, blackberry, spice, cured meat, leather and bacon fat. Its integration is absolutely seamless. Scrio is dark and impenetrable in terms of appearance and presentation. The bouquet and the mouthfeel are long and luscious. You can count the length of the finish in many, many long seconds. Only 5,000 bottles are made. In terms of its aging potential, this Tuscan Syrah has the inner energy to last two decades or more." Robert Parker

"Le Macchiole's 2013 Scrio is a deep, dense wine built on a core ofserious fruit. Dark, powerful and inviting, the 2013 possesses strikingnuance throughout, especially in the expression of fruit. Creamy, silkytannins add to an impression of generosity. It will be interesting tosee if more varietal aromatics develop in bottle. Today, the Scrio is awine decidedly built on primary notes." Antonio Galloni

"Wow. This is the best syrah in Tuscany this year with incredibledepth and beauty. The texture is so plush yet polished and caressing. Full body. The finish of chocolate, hazelnuts, smoked meat and fruitlasts for minutes." James Suckling

"This is meaty, exhibiting iron, blackberry, cracked pepper andsanguine aromas and flavors shaded by spicy oak notes. Powerful anddense, this could still benefit from aging but would be approachable with something like a juicy, grilled steak." Wine Spectator

    • "Scrio" Rosso IGT 2015
MAGNUM

“Scrio” Rosso IGT 2015 · MAGNUM

Scrio - great Tuscan Syrah by Le Macchiole - is a true beauty. The persistent bouquet offers aromas of dark berries and cured meat, warm and balsamic on the palate with great intensity and dynamism, rich in extracts and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich ruby violet. Inviting and intense nose with pronounced notes of plums, blueberries and blood oranges. A dense tannin on the palate, with a good feel, deep, clearly earthy tones, firm pressure in the finish, lots of tobacco." Falstaff

"Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice and menthol all flesh out in a wine that possesses notable power. Today, Scrio is mostly a wine of texture and density, while varietal notes are not especially evident. The oak is also quite dominant." Antonio Galloni

"Deep and saturated in both color and fruit, with core flavors of ripe plum, blackberry and black cherry, this red also offers interwoven notes of earth, vanilla, licorice and black pepper. This is solidly built, yet also polished and balanced, with a long, palate-staining finish." Wine Spectator

"It's worth noting that the Scrio was not made in 2014, as Syrah did not reach the right maturity for the quality Le Macchiole looks for. The 2015 growing season wasn't much easier, with 15 days of extreme heat in July. August brought cooler weather, and so they tried to slow down the ripening process by doing very little green harvest. This vintage is marked by more pepper than fruit, but it's still a beautiful effort, and I see a lot of potential for aging this wine. The 2015 Scrio is made with a more reductive approach overall, and this vintage needs a year or two to open fully. Only 3,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"A stunning syrah; the real McCoy for the variety. The depth of aroma takes your breath away with bark, tea leaves, peppermint, dried rosemary, thyme, sage, pressed violets, cedar, creme de cassis, blackcurrants and lavender. The palate is incredibly tight and yet, profound in its delivery of flavors. Full body, layer upon layer of fruit of every color on the spectrum, pinpoint acidity and a finish that seems endless." • "Messorio" Rosso IGT 2014
MAGNUM in OWC

“Messorio” Rosso IGT 2014 · MAGNUM in OWC

    About the winemakers
    Le Macchiole
    Tuscany | Bolgheri
    Le Macchiole

From the very beginning, the modern winery Le Macchiole has been one of the top Italian producers of quality wines. As one of the first and most important winegrowers in the Bolgheri region, it has also acquired a high international reputation. Since Eugenio Campolmi died young and unexpected in 2002, the widow Cinzia Merli, who founded and built the estate together with her husband, has continued to run it with great determination and foresight. The winemaker likes to affectionately call her wines "my children". The Campolmi family has been living in the region for many years and produced fine wines from vineyards on the plain of Via Aurelia as early as the end of the 1970s.

In 1983, Eugenio Campolmi, led by a gifted intuition, began planting new slopes at the foot of the Bolgheri hills. Experiments have shown that the Cabernet Franc grape variety is particularly suitable for Le Macchiole vineyards. However, since the owner of the estate had a particular passion for Syrah, he also planted this grape variety despite rather unfavourable growing conditions. Thus the rarest wine of the house, a pure Syrah called Scrio, was produced with considerable effort and in only a small quantity. Le Macchiole's outstanding wines also include the Messorio, made exclusively from Merlot, and the Paleo Rosso, the first Italian wine made entirely from Cabernet Franc to cause a sensation. The single-varietal plants only reach the market with one year bottle ripeness. In some years it is difficult to highlight even one product from the first-class range of the Tuscan wine company. It should also be mentioned that in 1991 a meeting took place between Eugenio Campolmi and Luca d'Attoma, oenologist at the Tua Rita winery in the Maremma, has proven to be a pioneer in the quality development of Le Macchiole. Since then, the clever winemaker Cinzia Merli has been available as a consultant.

The 22 hectares of vineyards are extremely densely planted with around 10,000 vines per hectare and are cultivated organically. The grapes are very strictly selected. From the outset, the aim of the management was to ensure that the characteristics of the terroir were given the highest possible recognition in the individual subzones on their own land. The Le Macchiole winery has received numerous top ratings from wine critics to this day. For his many years of service, he was named Italy's best winery in 2009 by the Associazione Italiana Sommelier (AIS) and two years later was named Winery of the Year by the magazineWine Enthusiast. "Le Macchiole is a model farm, perfect in every detail, with wonderful wines of extraordinary personality, from separately fermented and separately bottled varieties."Gambero Rosso
