“Luce 30° Vendemmia” Toscana IGT 2022
Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi shake hands in 1993. Two worlds, one idea: to create a wine that combines the best of Montalcino – the structure and elegance of Sangiovese – with the rounded depth of Merlot. A combination that had never before been seen in this region. Luce became the first Super Tuscan made from a Sangiovese-Merlot blend from Montalcino. Thirty years later, the 2022 vintage is released as 30° Vendemmia – the thirtieth harvest of a wine that pioneered a new era. The estate is situated in the south-west of Montalcino, in the heart of the Val d'Orcia, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The estate covers 249 hectares, 88 of which are planted, at altitudes ranging from 280 to 418 metres, with a south to south-west aspect. The soil follows its own logic: slate and sandstone at higher altitudes, perfect for Sangiovese; clay layers deeper down, which give Merlot the power and suppleness it needs.

Luce Brunello has been one of the icons in the large portfolio of Frescobaldi wines from Tuscany for years. The 2019 edition opens with great power and determination with ripe fruit flavours of blackberries and candied cherries. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and very harmonious thanks to the bright acidity and the overall quality of the primary fruit flavours of this excellent vintage. The tannins are well woven into the full-bodied density of the wine. Be sure to aerate or, better still, leave to mature for a few years in the cellar. SUPERIORE.DE

LUX VITIS comes from Cabernet Sauvignon vines over 12 years old and contains a small amount of Sangiovese. The 2019 vintage is rich and powerful, with full intensity. A core of dark cherries and blackberries on the palate, framed by sweet spices, bitter chocolate and campfire embers. As with the other wines in the Tenuta Luce portfolio, oak spice and tannins play an important role in the basic style expressed here. Only 6,600 bottles were produced. “Lux Vitis” Toscana IGT 2020
It all began with observation. In 2004, Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted on a three-hectare plot of the Tenuta, on sandy mixed soils. For years, the team watched as these vines grew, matured and developed. And they were surprised by the quality the vines displayed, vintage after vintage. Eleven years passed. Then, in 2015, the decision was made: to make a wine of their own from these grapes. The name was inspired by the essence of the place: Lux Vitis – the light of the vine. "In honour of the light to which all life is indebted."

“Lux Vitis” Toscana IGT 2021
"The art of waiting" – this is how Tenuta Luce describes the philosophy behind the creation of Lux Vitis. A wine that is in no hurry: three hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 2004, left to grow undisturbed for eleven years before the first label bearing its own name was printed. And then, vintage after vintage, the same patience in the cellar: 24 months in exclusively new French barriques before the wine leaves the estate. 2021 put that patience to the test. April brought unexpected frost – the vines, which had budded early, were affected, and production was reduced. This was followed by a recovery, a rainy spring and a hot, long summer. The significant temperature fluctuations between day and night during the harvest weeks acted as a counterbalance: they preserved the wine's precision and aromatics. 7,000 bottles – fewer than the previous year, but of great concentration. Concrete vats, 12 days' fermentation, 20 days' maceration, malolactic fermentation in barriques, 24 months in new oak.

Lamberto Frescobaldi has been given the task of successfully leading the Luce della Vite winery, located right next to Castelgiocondo, into the future with oenological skill. This was the dream of two protagonists of international viticultural history, Vittorio Frescobaldi from Florence and Robert Mondavi from Napa Valley/California, in 1995. Lamberto's main tasks are to renew vineyards, modernize wineries and set up research programs for selected vineyards. Luce della Vite is part of the Tenute di Toscana holding company managed by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi. Robert Mondavi's son Michael has only a financial stake in the estate.
The Tenuta Luce is one of the highest situated wineries in Montalcino with 350 to 420 meters of altitude. It comprises 192 hectares of land, 77 of which are covered with vines. While part of it was planted in 1977, the majority of the vineyards have been newly planted or replanted since 1997, with an average density of 6,100 vines per hectare. According to Frescobaldi, the Galestro soil, which is well drained and poor in organic matter, offers ideal conditions for growing Sangiovese at higher altitudes. At lower altitudes, the soil is more clayey and therefore particularly suitable for growing Merlot.
In order to maintain healthy vines, organic technologies are mainly used in the vineyards. The average yield of Tenuta Luce is kept very low, at around 30 hectolitres of wine per hectare, to strengthen the character of the grape varieties and allow the terroir to develop to its full potential. The varieties are harvested separately and are only brought together towards the end of November when fermentation is complete. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Luce, despite its Mondavi past, is not a noisy wine but a fine wine in which one feels the hills of southern Tuscany." Vinum
