“Sedàra” Rosso Sicilia DOC 2020
Delightful Nero d'Avola-based cuvée. Ruby red with vivid garnet reflections. Intense aroma with hints of tobacco, spices and mineral notes. The balanced flavour, marked by red fruits, impresses on the palate with blackberry and sour cherry tones and final with a good length. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Rosso Sedàra La Bella is woodsy and herbal at first; yet time in the glass releases a more inviting mix of black currants, sage and hints of smoke. This is silky in texture yet lifted, with bright acidity enlivening its depths of wild berry fruits and inner spice tones. While lightly structured, there’s no harm in jumping in now, as the 2020 finishes with a gently tart trace of blackberry and subtle hints of citrus. La Bella Sedàra is a very likeable blend." Vinous
"This has aromas of cherry stones, dried herbs, bay leaves and porcini mushrooms. Medium-bodied with powdery tannins. Savory. Juicy finish." James Suckling

“Rosé di Morgante” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2021
Delicate salmon pink. Fragrant notes of citrus, rose petals and strawberries on the nose. In the mouth, it has a beautiful minerality, a crispness and freshness. A good dose of acidity and above all its very low residual sugar predestine it to be a characterful and racy companion to light fish and vegetable dishes. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Rosè di Morgante, a Nero d'Avola Rosato, is sweetly perfumed with hints of toffee and butter cream giving way to freshly-sliced pears. It fleshes out across the palate with round textures contrasted by a buzzing of stimulating acidity. All the while there’s a confectionery note that carries from the nose through the finish, as the Rose' di Morgante finishes crisp and clean." Vinous

“Bianco di Morgante” da uve nere 2021
Bianco di Morgante is a pure Nero d'Avola. The typical Sicilian red grape, however, was vinified without contact with the skins, resulting in this very successful and exceptionally finessed white wine. Silky and shiny, this experimental wine captivates with balance, freshness and lightness. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Bianco di Morgante is a varietal Nero d’Avola vinified white, with a seductive bouquet that blends ripe orchard fruits with white flowers, sweet spice and hints of vanilla bean. It’s round with medium-bodied weight and a brilliant mix of sour citrus and zesty acids that tantalize the senses, while leaving a salty staining of minerality to linger. This finishes fresh and clean, yet decidedly savory in style." Vinous

Ruby red colour, appealing, slightly reductive aroma of ripe blackberries and elderberries, quite dense on the palate, some fruit sweetness, good harmony between acidity and tannin, traces of cassis in the elegant finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Rich ruby red with a black core. Discreet aromas of prunes, dates, some rum, malt coffee and tangerine peel. Opens juicy with fine fruity nuances, medium-bodied, tightly meshed youthful tannins, lively on the palate, persistent." Falstaff
"The 2019 Nero d'Avola Lamùri is remarkably pretty, presenting a dusty display of crushed violet candies and blackberries contrasted by hints of smoke and white pepper. It’s silky in texture and quite elegant, washing across the palate with pure black and hints of blue fruits, while gaining a more tactile feel toward the close as hints of sweet tannins slowly saturate. Notes of salted licorice linger, giving way to a subtle twang of spiced citrus as this tapers off lightly structured." Vinous

“Controdanza” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2017
The country dance (controdanza) is a typical dance in which man and woman face each other and unite in graceful movements - depending on their gender, the dancers interpret the music in their own way. This wine is exactly the same: Nero d'Aola and Merlot - as is well known, opposites attract and, with the right intuition, can adjust wonderfully to each other, forming harmony and contrast at the same time.
Strong purple. Mulberry and plum contrast with incense and balsamic notes. The grapes all come from calcareous soils, which again bridges the gap and makes this young wine balancing and harmonious. Soft tannins and beautifully integrated delicate acidity carry Controdanza into a smooth, medium-length finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Minerally up front, with lots of tarry smoke and hot stone on the nose, notes that underscore the palate's dried raspberry, singed orange peel and tobacco flavors. Medium- to full-bodied and gusty, with a firm, focused finish." Wine Spectator
"Aromas of smoke, dried cherries, mushrooms and hints of eucalyptus. It's medium-to full-bodied with plenty of earthy, umami notes and citrus peel. Light tannins." James Suckling

“Zisola” Rosso Sicilia Noto DOC 2019
Zisola, from the eponymous winery of the Mazzei family in Sicily, is an exceptionally well-made single-varietal Nero d'Avola. Elegantly shining ruby red with a gently lightening rim. In the flattering fruit bouquet, ripe forest berries and rose hips, lightly reminiscent of blood orange with a hint of cocoa. Juicy and clear on the palate with hearty red fruit, powerful and soft on the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red. In the nose of cranberries, oranges, cherries, gentle spice in the aftertaste. On the palate with red berry fruit, compact body, hearty, slightly consuming tannin in the final." Falstaff
"Fresh, sweet ripe cherry aromas with a nice herbal quality seasoned by almond and spices. Racy acidity on the palate." Decanter
"The 2019 Noto Rosso is youthfully poised yet very pretty, showing peppery florals, wet stone, black currants and smoke. This is silky in texture with motivating acidity and a cooling blend of savory herbs and tart wild berries. There’s a density and concentration here that is currently held in check by fine tannins, as the 2019 finishes incredibly long, resonating on dark fruits and hints of licorice. Give this a year or two of cellaring to show its best." Vinous
"Brimming with red and black berries, this is an attractively fresh and dry, medium-bodied Sicilian red with touches of licorice and black tea. Rather long, pleasantly dry finish." James Suckling
"The Zisola 2019 Sicilia Noto Zisola is a pure expression of Nero d'Avola from Noto, one of the most beautiful corners of Sicily, with Baroque architecture expressed in white limestone. The wine shows a sweet side that is carried forth by ripe cherry and dried raspberry. This vintage is focused on the fruity side of this mighty Sicilian grape and less so on the earthy or savory tones that you sometimes get with Nero d'Avola. You could pair it with any Southern Italian pasta with tomato sauce, especially a recipe with fried eggplant and shaved ricotta salata." Robert Parker

“Nero di Lupo” Rosso Terre Siciliane IGP 2020 (BIO)
Nero di Lupo is - in contrast to many other single-varietal Nero d'Avola - a fresh and rather light wine, but no less interesting. Intense aroma of sour cherries and herbs, the bright, friendly taste is exceedingly fruity, lively and silky. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Nero di Lupo impresses with its savory blend of grilled sage, flinty crushed rocks and citrus-tinged red currants. It’s round in feel with lively acids to balance, as sour cherry mixed with hints of tangerine gives way to saline-mineral tones toward the close. A bitter trace and nuances of plum skins linger through the long and spicy finale. The Nero di Lupo is a zesty, varietal Nero d'Avola that will excel at the dinner table." Vinous

Its fleshy textures envelope the palate in an intense wave of ripe black fruits, balanced by brisk acids and saline-mineral tones that add a more grippy feel toward the close. Notes of sage and blackberries linger long through the finale, over a coating of round tannins. The 2018 is showing very nicely, but it should also mature well through medium-term cellaring." Vinous
"Candied violet and spice aromatics on the nose accent flavors of black raspberry preserves, red licorice, fig cake and loamy earth in this fresh, fragrant and medium- to full-bodied red. Fine-grained tannins emerge to firm the finish." Wine Spectator
"Sweet and sour-cherry with walnut and toasted-oak aromas that follow through to a full body with juicy fruit and chewy tannin on the palate. Savory. Smoky meat at the end with lovely fruit." James Suckling

“Nerobaronj” Nero d’Avola Terre Siciliane IGT 2018 (BIO)
Deep ruby red. Intense scent of raspberry, red cherry, violets and spices. Sweet, spicy and yet light on its feet, it convinces with a great inner energy that gives the red fruits, herbs and mineral flavours an impressive expression. In the never-ending finish, Nerobaronj shows itself vibrant and with distinctive tannin, which gives additional emphasis. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 NeroBaronj is brooding in the glass, smoldering up with a darkly alluring bouquet of crushed ashen stones, brown spice and rich plum sauce. This takes a turn toward purity on the palate, lifted and feminine in feel, with pretty red fruits and inner rose tones that cascade throughout. It leaves a staining of primary concentration, while tapering off fresh and only lightly structured with a hint of licorice that lingers." Vinous

The black one from Avola. Avola is a small town near the famous excavations of Syracuse, in the southeast of Sicily. Nero simply means black. Nero d'Avola is a very old autochthonous grape variety. First mentions as "Calaurisi", which refer to the same small town in the Sicilian dialect, already existed in the 17th century. Nevertheless, little is known about this demanding grape variety to this day. For decades it served mainly as a blending partner to enhance other Italian and also French red wines, to make them darker and more full-bodied. Only when autochthonous grape varieties became modern again, Nero d'Avola was filled again under his name - and blended with international varieties, which had previously been planted in large quantities in Sicily. The result was a wine that could be found in almost every supermarket for little money. But in rather sad mass-produced quality.
Only a few years ago, oenologists at the top Sicilian wineries recognized the potential that was slumbering there and began to make the black wine from Avola what it could have always been. To the showcase red wine of the island. Since then, there is hardly a well-known Sicilian winery that does not have an excellent Nero d'Avola in its assortment. The international success is downright uncanny, the awards in all guides and magazines prove it. And - with the Nero d'Avola, the renaissance of autochthonous grape varieties began.
To this day, no ancestry has been proven. The grape variety probably comes from Sicily, possibly also from Calabria, because some of the old synonyms have "Calabrese" as a component. However, there is also the opinion that this Calabrese is the Italian interpretation of the Sicilian dialect word "Calaurisi", which in turn means "the grape coming from Avola".
Nero d'Avola matures relatively late, but is extremely resistant to heat and drought. He loves the warmth. Therefore, it is usually kept low to have the grapes hanging close to the ground. Many vineyards are even planted in the old Albarello-Reberziehung (also Gobelet- or single stock-education), which can be cultivated only laboriously. Nero d'Avola produces deep dark, tannin-rich and full-bodied red wines, which nevertheless do not lack natural acidity and therefore always present themselves quite fresh, which one would hardly expect with such a dark wine from Sicily. The scent is balsamic and spicy, dark berry, often with a touch of cedar or leather. Juicy on the palate with hints of plums, elderberries and blackberries. High-quality Nero d'Avola also have several years of maturing potential. In short: an autochthonous Sicilian for lovers of powerful red wines.
With over 20,000 hectares of vineyards, Nero d'Avola is widespread in Sicily and is approved in several DOC and DOCG wines. With the renaissance of the variety, it was also cultivated more often in Calabria. Tendency rising. SUPERIORE.DE
