      "The 2013 Friuli Colli Orientali Merlot Vigna Dominin presents a slightly shy and closed expression of this popular French grape. The cool climate of northeast Italy helps to develop color saturation and sharpness. Instead of generous cherry and opulent fruit, this wine veers toward plummy notes with black spice, tar and tobacco instead. One minor hesitation regards the alcohol: it is recorded at 15%, and you do feel it. This wine is fermented in conical oak tanks and sees four weeks of skin maceration. It is aged in barrique for two years before going into bottle for another ten months. Those long maceration times explain the slow-moving inner power you get here." Robert Parker

      "Like the Refosco, the 2013 Merlot Vigna Dominin shows what appears to be a desire to maintain more freshness in the wines. Vibrant and medium in body, the 2013 is a model of understated finesse. Even so, there is no shortage of intensity, its just that the wine is better balanced than in the past, with more freshness and redder tonalities to the fruit, and less oak influence. I would wait to drink the 2013 for at least a few years in order to allow the wine to develop more aromatic complexity. This is a lovely showing." VINOUS

    Meroi Davino

    The Lombard tribe recognised the unique location of the present-day wine village of Buttrio around two thousand years ago. It is therefore understandable that the best and most famous wineries in Friuli are to be found in the vicinity - at the beginning of the Colli Orientali del Friuli - and between picturesque hills. The Davino Meroi Winery is a small but bright star. The fortunes of the family business, named after his father, are today directed with great zeal by Paolo Meroi. Already in earlier years grandfather Domenico had acquired a large experience treasure in things viticulture. Paolo can rely on his friend Enzo Pontoni, manager of the nearby Miani winery, known for its high quality wines, for his daily work in the vineyard and cellar. But although his good wines undoubtedly bear the signature of his teacher, Paolo Meroi has developed a personal style for his white and red wines, which are full of character and only sold in small quantities. Davino Meroi's still affordable bottlings are now high on the regional leaderboards.

    In the vineyards cultivated by the young oenologist Mirko Degan, the landowner attaches great importance to a late harvest of very ripe grapes and deliberately keeps the yields per vine extremely low. This gives the wines their great structure and complexity. The juicy and concentrated grapes are expertly processed in the cellar. The must is fermented in barriques. The white wines also undergo malolactic fermentation. Paolo is considered to be a proven expert in the field of the maturation of fine wines. After all, he regularly shared his oenological findings with his friend Enzo for many years, initially swimming against the current in winemaking. The exciting, harmonious and always fragrant wines of the Davino Meroi Winery, which is still little known but admired by many competitors, are considered highly authentic by connoisseurs. However, according to the impression of some experienced observers, they are more recommendable to advanced connoisseurs than to inexperienced wine lovers.

    The Trattoria Al Parco, located in the middle of a park and around one hundred years old, is also part of Paolo Meroi's pleasure. The tavern, popular for its traditional Friulian cuisine, is run by the owner together with his wife Francesca. It is particularly known for grilled meat and game dishes. There has always been wine of its own to enjoy. During a guided tour in the Trattoria Al Parco, guests can also see Paolo's rarities. SUPERIORE.DE
