      Etna Rosato DOC 2017

Delicate old rose with shimmering reflexes, elegant fragrance with notes of wild strawberry and light currant, in addition restrained spicy tones. On the palate with creamy freshness and lively acidity. SUPERIORE.DE

"An enchanting bouquet of exotic fruits, flowers, macchia; salty-mineral on the palate, noble and precise in the finish. A wine with a future." Vinum

"Opening to a pale and very elegant pink color, the Graci 2017 Etna Rosato is a satisfying rosé to pair with shellfish or summer salads. There is a note of sweetness, like raspberry tart on the finish. This is an easy wine but also a very refreshing one." Robert Parker

"This creamy rosé offers lively acidity and a zesty edge to the flavors of white cherry, kumquat, smoke and spice. Firm and focused." Wine Spectator

"Dried apples and hints of strawberries and peach skin follow through to a full body with bright and vivid acidity and stone and ash undertones." James Suckling

    • Etna Rosso DOC 2016

      Etna Rosso DOC 2016

This archetype of an Etna Rosso presents itself with much grace and beautiful varietal typicity. In the bouquet aromas of strawberry and cherry, on the palate a medium weighty fruit, slightly salty hints and spicy nuances. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, rich ruby red. In the nose of ripe plums and cherries, tender smoke. Balanced on the palate, with juicy tannins, good grip, shows good melting, good length, powerful until the finish". Falstaff

"The Graci 2016 Etna Rosso is a mid-weight wine from the Sicilian volcano with pretty berry nuances followed by smoke, tar and light spice. The wine is moderate in mouthfeel intensity with polished, silky tannins. This vintage presents a more informal and accessible style that is ideal for near and medium-term drinking." Robert Parker

"A finely meshed red, with round and creamy tannins woven with a subtle streak of smoky mineral." Wine Spectator

"The fresh blue fruit on the nose is so enticing, ranging from blueberries to black raspberries and elderberries. Plenty of floral undertones, too. The palate is so polished and precise with crunchy acidity and a firm tannin structure." James Suckling

"This excellent basic red by Alberto Aiello Graci is from younger vines. Packed with rich cherry and raspberry aromas, it’s suave and full-bodied, with fine acidity and intensity. It’s also distinctly tannic but not raw. Flamboyant and long." Decanter

      Etna Bianco DOC 2018

Bright, luminous cuvée with the scent of fresh fruit and flowers. On the palate, aromas of apple, pear and peach flatter, well balanced and balanced. The fine mineral salt note in the finish is also delicious. SUPERIORE.DE

"Pale lemon. Salted almond, smoky flint and subtle lemon-rind fruit. Crisp, lively, apple acidity, with flinty, smoky minerality and a nutty tone to the medium-long finish. Mouth-watering, with life and energy." Jancis Robinson

"The beautiful 2018 Etna Bianco by Alberto Graci has plenty of citrus and stone fruit, all followed by that glossy aroma of natural rubber that I adore in a white wine. Of course, the mineral delivery is also there, front and center. Graci's interpretation offers more in terms of mouthfeel and texture than most of his peers. This opens the wine to a pairing with grilled fish or even crab cakes. This Etna Bianco exhibits endnotes of white peach, honey and aniseed." Robert Parker

    • Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2014

      Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2014

Etna Rosso in light ruby with a fine bouquet of raspberries, herbs and orange peels. Firm, straightforward taste. Mineral notes corresponding to the terroir. Silky tannins and a fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2014 Etna Rosso Arcurìa shows a deep garnet color with dark ruby reflections. The bouquet offers immediate intensity in the form of ripe fruit, dark plum, cherry confit, spice and toasted chestnut. It shows roundness and softness that only comes in warm and long vintages, much like the trouble-free 2014 growing season. The finish is slightly sweet and chewy." Robert Parker

"A firm and linear red with raspberry and lemon-rind aromas and flavors. Medium body, fine tannins and a fresh finish." James Suckling

"An aromatic thread of tea rose and anise and an earthy touch of fresh porcino mushroom unravel through this well-meshed red, which layers juicy wild strawberry and cherry fruit with grippy tannins and a streak of smoky mineral. Long and complex on the fragrant finish." Wine Spectator

"The firm tannins that were evident when the wine was released have now harmonised. The nose is delicate and fragrant but lively, with raspberry and mint aromas. It's very concentrated and sleek, with a finish that's packed with spice and pepper. It's elegant and long, making this an exceptional result from a hot year." Decanter

"Bright red-ruby. Wild, musky, youthfully reticent aromas of raspberry, flint and espresso are lifted by a pretty violet topnote. Concentrated but refined at once, showing outstanding density of texture and very pure, graceful flavors of red berries, red cherry and minerals. Saline and smoky mineral nuances stain the palate on the long, elegant finish. Knockout Etna Rosso from what is in my opinion a true grand cru among Etna’s many contrade." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

Fresh white from old vines with an invigorating citrus scent, rich in tropical fruits, firm and firm, with an elegant mineral note on the palate and high complexity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Scented with flowers, also mango and mint notes; mineral-salty course, animated by the acidity, combined polish and length. Vinum

"Pale gold. Heady, peachy tones, with rich, creamy, toasted almond, over some smokiness and spice – attractive nose. Crisp but rounded, with some honeyed maturity to the smoky, nutty, lean lemon palate. Long." Jancis Robinson

"The 2016 Etna Bianco Arcurìa shows a layered bouquet with ripe fruit, stone fruit and candied lemon. This vintage seems to have produced a creamier, slightly heavier style. The mouthfeel is moderate in length with medium acidity on the close." Robert Parker

Etna Rosso in light ruby with a fine bouquet of raspberries, herbs and orange peels. Firm, straightforward taste. Mineral notes corresponding to the terroir. Silky tannins and a fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, clear and sparkling ruby red. Open-hearted and inviting nose of ripe wild berries, raspberries and black currants, underlaid with fine flint. Juicy and compact on the palate, spreading on tightly woven tannins, gaining traction and power with each sip, full-bodied and long, yet light-footed and elegant". Falstaff

"Very pale ruby with some garnet tints. Cherry kernels, dusty spice and some nut, with a savoury chocolate note. Brisk acidity, firm, grainy tannins and a spicy-smoky mid palate that carries through to a long, saline finish. Lots of depth and intensity here, and still quite primary." Jancis Robinson

"Dried redcurrants, sandalwood and dried spices. The richness and the chewy tannins are certainly attractive and there’s plenty of depth and structure." James Suckling

"The 2016 Etna Rosso Arcurìa offers tight berry nuances with firm contours of volcanic smoke, tar and licorice that frame its fruity core. Across the appellation, the 2016 vintage tends to show thinner, less imposing wines. This expression from the Arcurìa cru, however, maintains its firmness and focus, while also showing sophisticated aromatic finesse." Robert Parker

Sparkling ruby. Earthy notes, a little truffle, lots of blackberry. Round and smooth in the base and course, opens with fine-meshed tannin, enveloped in sweet enamel, mineral notes in the finale, some black tea and a firm pressure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling ruby with bright rim. Somewhat reserved nose, smells of pomegranate and beetroot, some raspberry. On the palate, a fine, present tannin, salty, with hints of strawberry and raspberry." Falstaff

"Alberto Graci is one of the few vintners on Etna who has successfully captured the grace and elegance of a somewhat subdued vintage such as this. The 2016 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo offers a level of depth and sharpness that leaves me happily surprised. The aromas stand upright and determined with dried cassis and black currant followed by cigar ash and crushed stone. This is a mid-weight red with lasting flavor persistence." Robert Parker

"The nose is quite ripe, but there’s loads of complexity with dried herbs, leather, cedar, cigar box, ash and tar. Medium to full body, structured and chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish." James Suckling

“Quota 1000 Barbabecchi” Nerello Mascalese Terre Siciliane IGT 2014

Alberto Gracis top wine Quota 1000 Contrada Barbabecchi comes from the northeast slope of the Etna from the highest vineyard at 1000 to 1100m altitude. The Nerello-Mascalese vines are about 100 years old, and the yields are correspondingly low. Sparkling purple. In the bouquet fine notes of small red berries and wild cherry, in addition fig, thyme and liquorice. On the palate highly complex and of a unique harmony and elegance. A deep, almost infinite wine with an unforgettable finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"A harmonious red, featuring bright wild cherry and violet notes married to rich hints of fig cake and dried thyme, showing a streak of salinity. Medium-bodied and aromatic, with sculpted tannins firming the lingering finish of spice and graphite. Fresh and lively." Wine Spectator

"Luminous red. Deep spicy perfume of red cherry and minerals on the knockout nose. The pure flavors of Oriental spices and ripe red fruit are very fresh and light on their feet. Closes long and suave, with noteworthy vibrancy. Made from Nerello Mascalese grown at about 1,000 meters above sea level on the northern slope of Etna in the Barbabecchi contrada." Vinous

"Alberto Graci has created a gorgeous wine - the best I have yet tasted from his winery - in the form of the 2014 Quota 1000 Barbabecchi. This wine represents many of the ideals that I would imagine finding if I were in front of the archetypal Etna Rosso. By the way, because these vineyards are about the appellation limit of 1,000 meters above sea level, this wine is technically not in the appellation. Funny how that works out, because this wine is indeed so reflective of that specific Etna identity. I tasted this wine twice: once when I first opened the bottle and once again 12 hours later. I did this with all my top-scoring reds in this report. This vintage is powerful, tonic, dry and tart. It offers a graceful, almost fragile first impression but then delivers a song succession of berry, smoke and ash flavors that drive the very long finish." Robert Parker

    • "Sopra il Pozzo" Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015

“Sopra il Pozzo” Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015

Gracis new Sopra il Pozzo is a "selection from the selection" and comes from the growth of Arcurìa. It is the red archetype of an Etna Rosso, a Nerello-Cru with the unique DNA of the volcanic-stony terroir. Bright ruby with orange reflections, candied fruit in the nose, cooling firewood, some anise and herbs. Its taste is silky, without being smooth, its discreet wood and the delicate acid wire harmonize perfectly with the flanking tannin to an unforgettable, mineral-salty finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brightening garnet red with a fine shimmer. The nose is fragrant, with rhubarb, pomegranate and raspberry notes. A radiant palate, with a lot of present fruit, especially pomegranate and raspberry, then opens with a dense, pithy tannin, firm pressure and a long finish, in the final accentuated salty notes." Falstaff

"Pale ruby-garnet. Ripe, scented maraschino cherry, with hazelnut and subtle smoky complexity. Sweet-savoury, flinty cherry palate fruit, with sandy, firm tannic structure and quite bright acidity. Long, smoky-spicy finish. Power over elegance." Jancis Robinson

"This was the first vintage of an outstanding parcel within Arcuria that henceforth is bottled separately. For all the excellence of the regular 2015, this is different, with richer raspberry aromas and greater aromatic weight. It's very elegant and silky, highly concentrated with fine acidity. It's more skeletal now than the regular wine: taut, lingering and very long." Decanter

"This is a new wine from Alberto Graci with fruit sourced from the part of his vineyard holding located "above the well" in the Contrada Arcuria not too far from the Graci winery. The beautiful 2015 Etna Rosso Arcurìa Sopra il Pozzo pours from the bottle with medium intensity and mild ruby intensity. You might mistake this wine for a Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo if you were to judge by appearance alone. However, the bouquet shows that strong volcanic character that is unmistakable in the red wines from Etna; wild berries, blue flowers, red currant, licorice, mountain herbs and crushed stone all play leading roles on the bouquet." About the winemakers
    Alberto Graci
    Sicily
    Alberto Graci

The stories behind some Italian wineries sound like a storyboard for a movie. The one by Alberto Graci would also be a script. Son from a Sicilian farmer's family studies in Rome, becomes a successful investment banker in Milan at a young age. The death of his grandfather changes his steep career. He returns and becomes a winegrower. Great story.

We add: Already the grandfather cultivated wine. However, in the interior of the country, where at that time mass was produced, the grapes were sold to the cooperative and thus the rest of the mixed agriculture was only supported, one could not make a living from viticulture.

Alberto Graci came back in 2004. At that time there was hardly any viticulture on Etna. No ten brave pioneers like Benanti, Marco de Gracia or Frank Cornelissen believed in the wines from the volcano. But Alberto Graci was also fascinated. He was able to sell his grandfather's land and invested in vineyards on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. A Sicilian is more likely to sell a Sicilian to a Sicilian than to a cross-entry from the mainland or even from abroad. So he managed to buy some very old, partly semi-decay, but first-class sites. And unlike many of the "new" Vintners on Etna, who were often only able to acquire tiny plots, Alberto Graci succeeded in acquiring larger contiguous areas.

Unlike "crus" or "single vineyards"as sites worldwide are often called, such lands are called here "Contrada". Because, as Alberto points out, "here at Etna it is not only the soil and microclimate that change every few hectares, but also the difference in altitude and the specific lava flow, i.e. from which eruption the lava originates as subsoil. That could be a few hundred years, or even just the last big eruption in 1981 that changed the north flank here."

The Contrada Arcuria covers 25 hectares, one of the largest vineyards in the region, with 18 hectares of wine in production, more than 15 of which is Nerello Mascalese, the rest is planted with Carricante and Catarratto, from which fine, elegant white wines are produced. The younger vines are planted in rows of about 2 metres at a distance of 80 centimetres, resulting in a stock density of over 6,300 vines per hectare. The older plants are laid out in Alberello tree nursery, where each floor has a radius of about one metre, which results in an amazing 10,000 plants per hectare. However, at well over 650m above sea level and with an extremely low yield.

A few years ago, in the famous Contrada Feudo di Mezzo near Passopisciaro, Graci was able to buy an 80-year-old wild vineyard with Alberello vines, surrounded by chestnuts and olive trees.

His pride and joy, however, is a vineyard at over a thousand metres above sea level, the Contrada Barbabecchi above the village of Solicchiata. Vines over a hundred years old, many of them still rootless, "because the phylloxera didn't dare to climb the mountain so high." Alberto Graci says with a smile. This vineyard must be seen. Less than 30 km away as the crow flies, the sea in the north near Taormina and also in the southeast. Behind it towering high and mostly snow-covered, the eternally smoking crater. In the steep, terraced vineyard there are small trees where very few small grapes grow which are harvested in November. Only about 1,000 kilos per hectare. Without any chemical treatment, pure nature. A mad handicraft, because here - as with a mixed sentence - in some parts also white wine varieties and other autochthonous red wine varieties grow, some of them even still unknown, they are selected separately and come into the extremely exciting Etna Rosato. In the middle of it also chestnuts and olive trees, lots of bushes with forest berries and lots of herbs. It all adds up to one "own air". Perhaps that is why the wine from up here is so wonderfully elegant and spicy.

The latest project will be the "always curious" Alberto Graci with another "curiosity nose" with Angelo Gaja, a Piedmont top winegrower, and his daughter Gaia Gaja. In the southwest of Etna, Gaja and Graci have acquired about 20 hectares of land, which is said to have produced excellent wines in the 19th century. "We are much more interested in revitalizing the region than in marketing." Graci says and continues: "Everyone who comes on Etna falls in love with it. Angelo on Etna is like a volcano on a volcano.” Anyway, we are already very curious. SUPERIORE.DE
