"Crisp and luminous, the 2016 Langhe Rossj-Bass is Chardonnay enhanced with a tiny part Sauvignon Blanc. This second grape only constitutes 5% of the blend, yet its presence is felt in a big way. The wine presents pristine and sharply delineated tones of exotic fruit, peach and white rose. Fruit is sourced in Barbaresco and in Serralunga d'Alba. This wine delivers a bright spot of acidity that was shaped by the steep diurnal temperature shifts that characterized the tail end of the growing season. Much work has been achieved in the vineyards to optimize farming and to ensure that ripening does not advance too quickly or with too much alcohol. This wine will be released at the end of July 2017 and I tasted it just before bottling." Robert Parker

    • "Alteni di Brassica" Sauvignon Bianco Langhe DOP 2017

“Alteni di Brassica” Sauvignon Bianco Langhe DOP 2017

Alteni di Brassica - its namealteni, stone walls that border the vineyards and brassicaa yellow spring flower of the region does not indicate any wallflower existence. Rather, they are synonymous with the first Sauvignon Blanc in the region, which Angelo Gaja has cultivated since 1983. A highly elegant wine, which convinces with an aromatic bouquet, fine fruit, much depth and beautiful length. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Langhe Alteni di Brassica (a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc) offers tonic freshness, zesty citrus, white peach and crushed oyster shell. The harvest came early in this hot growing season with the grapes coming off the vines as early as August 17th. That early picking date served to keep the aromas fresh and the fruit crunchy. Gaia Gaja tells me that the fruit was super concentrated in this vintage, and the clusters were so small she called them "bonsai grapes." In addition to the concentrated aromas, the wine also shows a level of freshness that comes as a very pleasant surprise. Evidently, the acidity was also concentrated into those tiny berries." "Here is a crisp and zesty wine that is easy to drink—and easy to read, thanks to its inherent simplicity and transparency. The 2016 Langhe Alteni di Brassica is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc that did not do malolactic fermentation. One third of the mass ages in stainless steel and the rest sees contact with natural barrel for a crisp and lighthearted expression of this fragrant grape. The cool growing conditions of the vintage contribute to the tangy freshness of this pretty wine." Robert Parker

This shows white stones, flint, grass, green apples, herbs and preserved lemons. The palate shows great interplay between minerals and stone-fruit flesh. Medium to full body, very precise acidity and a taut finish.

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco DOCG 2015

Barbaresco of Gaja with floral aromas, notes of light red fruits, menthol and liquorice. Very clear and full-bodied taste, great fruit. Classically built with remarkable elegance. The tannins are still lively and, like every year, require a little patience. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby garnet. Dense and very present nose, rich notes of ripe peach, some rhubarb, then raspberry. A lot of sweet, ripe fruit, after dark cherries and raspberries, opens with present, dense tannin, builds up long, in the finale firm pressure." Falstaff

"Seductive scent of stone fruit, herbs and blossoms. Perfectly balanced on the palate, the acidity presents itself accentuated, the tannins are robust, in the finish mineral-salty aromas in combination with a lot of fruit and finesse." Vinum

"The 2015 Barbaresco was to be bottled a week after I tasted this sample for review. Gaia Gaja was waiting for the right moon before commencing bottling. This vintage is not unlike the 2005 growing season that saw a good amount of rain in spring and scorching heat in the summer. The risk of downy mildew made vintners extra vigilant. Although the 2015 vintage was not ideal for color fixing Nebbiolo (indeed, this wine is slightly less intense in terms of its color saturation), it did prove an important year for power, structure and dry extract. This is a full and generous expression with a fine, loose texture and rich fruit flavors." Robert Parker

"Meticulous vineyard work on the 14 parcels that are the source of this blend has given outstanding results. The aromatic nose is packed with generous ripe red fruits, and it's beautifully polished and stylish. The palate is rich, full-bodied and rounded. There's concentration and power, and it's very spicy and assertive, with impressive punch and drive. Truly imposing." Decanter

"Gaja's 2015 Barbaresco is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and resonant, the 2015 exudes class from the very first taste. Today, the aromatics are not especially open or expressive, but it is the wine's depth and overall sense of harmony that really carry the day. Hints of orange peel, spice and rosewater give the 2015 an exotic aromatic top register that is hugely appealing. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem. The 2015 is a wonderfully complete and harmonious wine, but it really does need a few years in the cellar to fully unwind." Antonio Galloni

"A rich and layered Barbaresco with cedar and plums, as well as light leather and rose aromas that follow to a full yet balanced palate and a chewy finish. Very polished. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful." James Suckling

"A combination of savory and fruit elements, this red reveals cherry, berry, eucalyptus, menthol, tar and mineral flavors. Firms up, with monolithic tannins locking this tight. Patience is required." Wine Spectator

    • Barbaresco DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco DOCG 2016

A complex and multi-layered classic by the old master of Nebbiolo from Piedmont. In the nose cedar wood, plum, red fruits, undergrowth and some rose fragrance. Balanced, spicy taste, the tannins firm and the finish precise and long. This muscular monument of a red wine needs a few more years of bottle maturation, with a little patience it will turn into pure elegance! SUPERIORE.DE

"I tasted this wine over two sittings, one at the winery and one at my home office a few weeks later. Although I can't claim any extraordinary differences between the two sessions, I noticed a few minimal shifts that are essential to understanding the wine's future aging ability. The 2016 Barbaresco starts off slow at first, showing a small margin of aromatic evolution in the glass. But come back two hours later, and you can almost hear the soft sounds of the symphony playing just below the surface. The 2016 vintage is characterized by the solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine's carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. This wine will award those who wait." Robert Parker

"This gorgeous red evokes rose, strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit, shaded by tobacco, tar and wild thyme notes. Pure, sleek and intense, with a firm base of tannins and vibrant acidity for support. This should evolve beautifully. Be patient." Wine Spectator

"Gaja's 2016 Barbaresco is positively stellar. A wine of poise and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive spice and floral notes open up first, but what really stands out is the wine's nuance and delineation. There is a sense of translucency to the 2016 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon and rose petal develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. Quite simply, the 2016 is one of the very finest Gaja Barbarescos in recent memory. This is such a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it" Vinous

    • Barolo "Conteisa" DOCG 2013

      Barolo “Conteisa” DOCG 2013

Conteisa - always a top wine - is now crowned with the royal designation Barolo DOCG. Its rich bouquet exudes the sweet scent of red cherries and an elegant blend of flowers, mint, spices and liquorice. Velvety and inviting taste, with a perfect balance of strong fruit, integrated tannins and well-balanced acidity. Radiance and complexity are overwhelming. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2013 Barolo Conteisa is now officially a DOCG wine following years as a Langhe Nebbiolo or IGT wine. The first vintage was 1996 and fruit is sourced from the Cerequio cru in La Morra. This is a classic and coherent expression that is characterized by crunchy fruit flavors and sweet tannins. Fruit came into the winery at very low temperatures and saw slow fermentations. Generally speaking, the 2013 vintage is characterized by slow ripening and a long growing season. This is a balanced and homogenous wine with a softly caressing nature. It offers aromas of citrus, summer fruit and even a touch of watermelon pulp. This wine is usually considered the more immediate of Gaja's two new Barolo wines, yet this vintage surely needs extra time to evolve." Robert Parker

"The 2013 Conteisa is unusually dark and virile in this vintage. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, leather and melted road tar give the Conteisa much of its dark, brooding personality. That impression is reinforced by the wine's imposing tannic structure and overall feel. Conteisa is typically a wine more of finesse than power, but the 2013 vintage seems to have pulled out a more virile expression of this site. I suspect the 2013 is going to need a good few years in the cellar, perhaps more, to be at its very best." Antonio Galloni

"Lots of beautiful aromas of strawberries, cherries, oranges and white chocolate follow through to a full body with a fantastic, dense and chewy mouth feel and a long finish. So precise." James Suckling

"Intense, rich ruby red with a delicate brightening edge. Compact and red berry nose, raspberry and rose hip, then pomegranate, blood orange in the aftertaste. Very smooth palate entrance, extremely elegant, great melt, constant pressure paired with fresh red fruit, crisp tannin, in the final powerful and echoing." Falstaff

"Just mid ruby. Firm yet perfumed and deep with hints of liquorice. Fantastic grip of polished tannins on a succulent raspberry and sour-cherry finish. Poised yet powerful." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barolo Conteisa is intense, with a background chorus of plum, prune, herb, mint and wild cherry. It's a very balanced Barolo. The Cerequio vineyard that provides this fruit often suffers from hail damage because the vineyard is located along the corridor of bad weather that comes over the hill from La Morra. There was some damage in mid-August, but fruit in the 2016 vintage suffered much more extensively in comparison. In fact, so little fruit was saved that Gaia Gaja is pretty sure this wine will not be produced next vintage." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Barolo Conteisa is a heady, exotic wine, and also one of the most complete, alluring Conteisas I have ever tasted. Conteisa is usually a wine of grace and understatement. The 2015, on the other hand, is a bold, sweeping Barolo that saturates the palate with stunning depth and volume. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 remains vibrant. This is such a complete, harmonious wine." Vinous

"Extremely pure fruit on the nose here with aromas of plums and strawberries and hints of cedar and rose petals, as well as rose stems. Full body. Very tannic and structured, yet polished and refined. Dusty and stony undertones and textures. Drink after 2021." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    Angelo Gaja
    Piedmont
    Angelo Gaja

He was a central figure in the establishment of Italian viticulture in the international world of top wines and is today, along with Marchese Antinori, probably the best known wine personality of the country: Angelo Gaja. The winemaker is also one of the world's most frequently awarded producers by renowned wine critics. Without losing sight of traditional values, the great expert, revolutionary and visionary never rested on his laurels in the rather conservative Piedmont, but developed economic and oenological methods uncompromisingly. Meanwhile Gajas wineries also extend over Tuscany. However, the headquarters of the fourth generation family business is still located in the famous wine village of Barbaresco. Angelo Gajas' phenomenal success story began with the production of Barbaresco in the Langhe region.

If you are interested in the wines Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Supertuscan and above all Barbaresco, you will always find the name of the celebrity - also under the name of „Angelo Nazionale“ economists and oenologists. Because nobody stands more for the upheaval in the Italian wine industry of the 1970s and 1980s than the first producer of modern cellar technology. It was Gaja, for example, who introduced the use of barriques and early malolactic fermentation in Piedmont. And with the 1996 harvest, the exceptional winemaker even voluntarily upgraded almost all his DOCG wines Barbaresco and Barolo to the lower level of DOC wines. „Langhe Nebbiolo“ in order to keep open the possibility of adding smaller proportions of international grape varieties to correct the acidity. Since the 2013 vintage, he has again committed himself to the DOCG Barbaresco for his site wines.

The much sought-after winemaker, who took over the estate from his father, then mayor of Barbaresco, in 1961 at the age of 21, and who was by no means only applauded for his sometimes courageous decisions, has now left the day-to-day business to his daughters Gaia and Rossana at the age of 70. However, Gaja attaches great importance to the fact that he is not yet retired.

The outstanding trademark of the Gaja winery is the Nebbiolo grape variety, native to Piedmont, which has gained decisive attention thanks to the exceptional winemaker. This special variety therefore occupies a very large part of the vineyards. However, the range is by no means limited to Nebbiolo wines, but consists of a great variety of other delicious creations. With the increasing success of the winery, the vineyard portfolio grew as well as the area under cultivation. Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc white varieties, have been introduced into the vineyards of the "King of Barbaresco" We've moved in. SUPERIORE.DE

"What other descriptions of one of the most famous wine companies in the world should be found that have not already been strained a hundred times? So let's stick to the facts: The Gaja plants are exemplary in their seductive brilliance and stylistic perfection. In their youth they overwhelm with opulence and generosity, but after a reasonable waiting time they reveal all their depth and complexity."Gambero Rosso
