Angelo Gaja's Sorì San Lorenzo is not simply a Barbaresco – it is an impulse. In the south-facing vineyards of the famous Secondine cru parcel, it combines the intensity of the terrain with the entrepreneurial vision of a family that has been setting standards with this wine since 1967. Since then, Sorì San Lorenzo has been recognised as the strongest, most powerful and longest-lived member of the Gaja Cru trilogy – a wine that does not trumpet greatness, but quietly unfolds it.
In the glass, it presents itself with a deep ruby red colour and violet shimmer – a silent promise of depth. The bouquet is complex and multi-layered: blackcurrant, cassis and fine spice aromas combine with herbal notes, delicate floral facets and a striking minerality. Smoky wood accents and tobacco are added without drowning out the finesse. The 2017 shows a dancing freshness on the palate: the fruit is precise, the tannins silky and polished, clearly defined acidity and salty minerality provide tension and balance. The finish is long, marinating and electrifies the palate with a vibrant tension – a statement of origin and character. This Barbaresco is not a monument, but polished harmony and substance. "Tasted blind. Medium ruby red with orange-coloured reflections. Full, ripe and yet fine bouquet with a lot of depth. Juicy and elegant palate with generous, sweet and sour cherry fruit and really animating, crisp tannins." Jancis Robinson
"The 2017 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is a rich, heady wine that packs a punch. Preserved dark cherry, plum, espresso, liquorice, dried herbs and spices create a potent, rich Barbaresco that is endowed with enormous depth and brooding power." Vinous
This wine is generally the most austere of Gaja's three single-vineyard wines and is also described as "wilder". In this vintage, however, the nose seems to carry more weight than the Sori Tildin, with rich raspberry and cherry flavours. It is lush, full-bodied and concentrated, with considerable density and weight. Despite its youthful sharpness, it is polished and balanced, with a very long finish." Decanter
"The flavours of fresh rose petals are amazing, including strawberries and citrus fruits. Full-bodied and multi-layered with a full, very linear and long finish. At the end it becomes dense and very serious. Please give this wine at least five years to realise its potential." James Suckling
